Saints re-sign a running back to their practice squad

The Saints have re-signed a familiar running back to their practice squad. Preseason fan-favorite Jacob Kibodi is back on the team:

The New Orleans Saints have re-signed running back Jacob Kibodi to the practice squad, per a report from Saints News Network’s John Hendrix.

This comes shortly after Saints rusher Kendre Miller went down with a hamstring injury after he only played 10 snaps offensively on Sunday.

The undrafted rookie out of ULL was originally released from the practice squad at the beginning of October. He received a lot of love from the fan base and took advantage of the opportunity to play for a team that was all but completely in his own backyard.

“That was a dream come true. Coming from Louisiana, that’s a blessing. Everybody dreams of that as a kid,” Kibodi said after his two-touchdown preseason gamje against the Tennessee Titans, adding that his mother Meta and brothers Uriah and Caleb were in attendance.

It will be interesting to see how this venture with the Saints pays off for Kibodi in his second shot in New Orleans.

Commanders make no practice squad elevations: What does that mean?

Commanders make no practice squad. What does that mean for Jayden Daniels?

The Commanders passed on elevating anyone this week from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.

The deadline, 4 p.m., passed, and the Commanders made no moves this week. League rules stipulate that a player can only be elevated twice during the season from the practice squad to the active roster. They must be signed to the active roster when elevated a third time.

Understandably, there was much speculation and anticipation, wondering if quarterback Sam Hartman might be elevated to be a third quarterback for Sunday. If the move had been made, it most likely would have revealed the Commanders’ intention to list starter Jayden Daniels as “inactive” against the Bears.

Daniels is listed as “questionable” for Sunday’s game against the Bears. He suffered a rib injury on Washington’s first offensive possession in their Week 7 win over the Carolina Panthers.

Additionally, the Commanders have already signed two to the active roster in the last ten days. DE Javontae Jean-Baptiste and DT Jonathan Allen were injured and sent to the injured reserve list, and the Commanders signed DT Sheldon Day from the practice squad. Then, GM Adam Peters signed DE Jalyn Holmes to the active roster. Holmes had just been released by the Jets.

Finally, the Commanders activated rookie LB Jordan Magee this week (October 23) from injured reserve to the 53-man roster. So, they have been making plenty of moves and apparently felt they didn’t need another roster move for this week.

Saints bring back a familiar offensive lineman to their practice squad

The Saints brought back a familiar face by re-signing Sincere Haynesworth to the practice squad. The rookie from Tulane spent his summer with New Orleans:

After a plethora of moves yesterday that included a highlighted Alvin Kamara extension, the New Orleans Saints made yet another transaction that likely flew under the radar, as reported by KPRC2 Houston’s Aaron Wilson.

The Saints brought back a familiar face from this summer, adding rookie offensive lineman Sincere Haynesworth to the practice squad. Haynesworth, a Tulane alum signed with the Saints as an undrafted free agent earlier this year and spent the summer completed for a spot on the interior of the offensive line.

Haynesworth was waived by the Saints before the start of the regular season and then picked up by the New England Patriots four weeks into the year. However, his time there would be short as he was cut just seven days after his signing.

The addition of Haynesworth to the practice squad could be a sign that guard Nick Saldiveri won’t be active this week, as he was sidelined during last week’s game against Denver with a shoulder injury. This could possibly indicate that another interior offensive lineman, maybe even Haynesworth himself, could be brought up for gameday this week.

We should know a bit more in the next few days when the injury reports start to clear things up.

Commanders release former first-round pick Jamin Davis

The Commanders move on from 2021 first-round pick Jamin Davis.

The Washington Commanders made a surprising move on their day off. On Tuesday, the Commanders announced some roster moves, one of which was the release of defensive end/linebacker Jamin Davis.

A first-round pick from Kentucky in 2021, Davis appeared in 45 games with 36 starts through his first three seasons with Washington. He had 269 tackles, including 20 for loss in his first three years, with seven sacks and one interception.

Davis was selected to be Washington’s inside linebacker in 2021, but the team quickly realized he was better suited to play on the outside. Still, throughout his first three seasons, Davis was inconsistent at times.

The Commanders underwent a regime change in the offseason, hiring Dan Quinn as the new head coach. They signed Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu in free agency, which brought questions about how the staff viewed Davis. Those questions were answered when Washington moved Davis to defensive end/edge rusher.

While he worked hard and embraced his new role, the transition was a difficult one. Davis played in five games for the Commanders this season, recording 13 tackles and one for loss.

Of former coach Ron Rivera’s former first-round picks, only cornerback Emmanuel Forbes (2023) remains on Washington’s roster.

Saints sign two-time Super Bowl champion wide receiver after major injury

The Saints signed two-time Super Bowl champion Marquez Valdes-Scantling after a major injury to Rashid Shaheed, adding experience to the receiving corps:

This move has been in the making for quite some time. The New Orleans Saints are signing wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport. Valdes-Scantling won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, but before that, the Saints tried hard to recruit him in free agency. Now they’re getting him after all.

Valdes-Scantling’s arrival comes in the wake of season-ending knee surgery for Rashid Shaheed, one of the game’s brightest young stars. Like Shaheed, Valdes-Scantling is known as a deep threat, though he outweighs the injured Pro Bowler by 26 pounds. Valdes-Scantling is a bigger target at 6-foot-4 with a 78-inch wingspan compared to the 6-foot Shaheed’s 73-inch wingspan. He also clocked the 40 yard dash in 4.37 seconds coming out of college back in 2018.

But if those measurables were all that matters, Valdes-Scantling wouldn’t have been available. The Chiefs cut him earlier this  year because his production didn’t match his contract. He initially  signed  with the Buffalo Bills but was let go after catching just two passes (on nine targets) through six games. So we should temper expectations for him in New Orleans.

Still, Valdes-Scantling does have a lot to offer. He’s competed in 11 playoff games and caught 188 passes for 3,181 yards before his 30th birthday, scoring 16 touchdowns. That experience matters, and the Saints clearly have a role in mind for him. Let’s see if it pans out.

Commanders make roster moves after Jonathan Allen’s injury

Rookie defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste also lands on IR.

On Monday, the Washington Commanders lost a big part of their team when it was revealed that defensive tackle Jonathan Allen would miss the remainder of the season with a torn pec.

Washington made it official on Wednesday, placing Allen on the reserve/injured list. However, the Commanders made another move that impacts their defensive line depth, placing rookie defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste on IR. However, Jean-Baptiste will be designated to return as head coach Dan Quinn doesn’t believe it’s a long-term issue.

“Dorance will not practice today and yes, we’re hoping it’s shorter than longer with Javonte with his ankle injury,” Quinn said. “So, we’re hopeful that it’s at the limit, and we’ll get a see for there. It’s too early to call today.”

Washington signed veteran defensive tackle Sheldon Day to the 53-man roster and replaced him with Carl Davis. Day was active for one game this season.

In another move, the Commanders also signed defensive end Jalyn Holmes. A fourth-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Holmes, 28, has spent time with the Vikings, Saints, Giants, Bears and, most recently, the Jets. Holmes appeared in three games for New York this season. In his career, Holmes has played in 44 games and has two sacks.

Starting defensive end Dorance Armstrong injured his ribs in Sunday’s loss to Baltimore, but Washington hopes his injury is short-term.

Commanders rule RB Brian Robinson Jr. out vs. Ravens

Robinson is out for Sunday, but the Commanders do get some DL help back vs. Ravens.

The Washington Commanders will be without one of their top offensive players in Sunday’s showdown with the Baltimore Ravens. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. was ruled out on Saturday afternoon.

Robinson, who is dealing with a knee injury, missed practice all week. Last week, Robinson missed practice but played in Sunday’s win over the Browns. While he only carried the ball seven times in that game, he did score two touchdowns. Robinson leads the Commanders with 325 rushing yards and five touchdowns.

Robinson’s absence means more carries for Austin Ekeler, who has been the 1b to Robinson’s 1a this season. Veteran Jeremy McNichols will continue to see an increased role. McNichols emerged in Ekeler’s absence two weeks ago, rushing for 68 yards and two touchdowns. He scored again in last week’s win over Cleveland.

As is customary before every game, the Commanders made some roster moves. Washington downgraded Robinson and rookie linebacker Jordan Magee from questionable to out. The Commanders activated defensive lineman Efe Obada from the reserve/PUP list and signed running back Chris Rodriguez Jr. and cornerback Kevon Seymour from the practice squad. This will be Rodriguez’s first game of the season. Washington elevated Seymour last week.

Saints offensive coordinator may have revealed why they cut former draft pick

Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak may have revealed why they cut former draft pick A.T. Perry: ‘I haven’t met a lot of gamers’

Why did the New Orleans Saints waive wide receiver A.T. Perry? LLast week, head coach Dennis Allen said it came down to a numbers game — injuries had piled up along the offensive line, and the team needed a roster spot, so they let Perry go to make room for Connor McGovern. That decision proved timely when McGovern got into their next game just days after arriving in New Orleans.

But why was Perry released as opposed to, say, another backup like running back Jordan Mims or tight end Dallin Holker? That may come down to their performances in practice every day, which is an area Perry had been found lacking.

Offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak might have inadvertently shared some insight to that decision: “I haven’t met a lot of gamers. Usually, what people do in practice is what they do in games.”

He was speaking about Spencer Rattler’s consistency at practice giving the coaches enough confidence to start the rookie quarterback, but it’s easy to draw a connection between Kubiak’s comments and Perry’s play. The wideout caught just one pass out of the hundreds of throws Derek Carr made at training camp. Whether it’s due to lapses in concentration or struggling to pick up Kubiak’s playbook, Perry didn’t consistently perform from one day to the next. That kept him low on the depth chart beneath other players who were improving each week.

And now he’s in a new city learning a new system, or at least one more familiar to what he’s worked in before. It’s unlikely that Perry will be ready to play against the Saints next Thursday night when the Broncos come to town, but you never know. It would be just like Sean Payton to draw up a couple of plays for someone still smarting from being let go.

Broncos terminate contract of injured offensive lineman with settlement

The Broncos terminated offensive lineman Will Sherman’s contract with an injury settlement, making him a free agent.

After placing offensive lineman Will Sherman on the practice squad/injured list on Tuesday, the Denver Broncos terminated his contract on Wednesday after reaching an injury settlement with the player.

Sherman (6-4, 300 pounds) Sherman injured his ankle during a practice last week. After reaching a settlement with the team, he now becomes a free agent. Once healthy, Sherman might be a candidate to return to the Broncos.

Elsewhere on the roster front, Denver officially signed wide receiver A.T. Perry to their practice squad on Wednesday. The Broncos added four players to their practice squad this week, clearing out Sherman, running back Salvon Ahmed and defensive back Quinton Newsome to make room. Denver also promoted linebacker Levelle Bailey to the active roster.

On the injury front, the Broncos have also opened 21-day windows for running back Audric Estime (ankle) and cornerback Damarri Mathis (ankle) to return from injured reserve to the 53-man roster.
