Broncos’ updated 53-man roster after 2 transactions

After losing Mike McGlinchey to IR and promoting Dondrea Tillman, the Broncos have an updated 53-man roster for Week 3.

After making three transactions on Wednesday, the Denver Broncos have updated their 53-man roster ahead of a Week 3 showdown with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

First, the Broncos placed right tackle Mike McGlinchey (knee) on injured reserve, ruling him out for at least four games. Denver then promoted pass rusher Dondrea Tillman from the practice squad to the active roster.

The Broncos filled Tillman’s old spot on the practice squad by signing pass rusher Andrew Farmer. Following those moves, here’s a look at Denver’s updated 53-man roster ahead of Week 3.

Linebacker signed with Broncos after dominating them in preseason

Kristian Welch totaled 6 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 PBU and 1 INT against the Broncos in preseason. Denver signed him shortly thereafter.

When the Denver Broncos faced the Green Bay Packers in their second preseason game last month, Packers linebacker Kristian Welch totaled six tackles (including one behind the line of scrimmage), one pass breakup and one interception. He also played well in a joint practice against Denver.

After Welch failed to make Green Bay’s 53-man roster last week, the Broncos signed him. Welch’s performance against Denver wasn’t the only factor that led to his signing, but it certainly didn’t hurt.

“We still felt like inside linebacker was an area of need for us,” Broncos coach Sean Payton said Monday. “We went into kind of the final 53 cut down looking at that position. He was someone that stood out on film. Obviously, we had practice tape together with him, but more importantly, just the body of work for that player.”

Welch (6-3, 240 pounds) spent three years with the Baltimore Ravens before joining the Packers in 2023. The 26-year-old linebacker has been used primarily on special teams to this point in his career. After adding Welch, Denver’s 53-man roster for Week 1 is set.

Sean Payton recalls discovering Taysom Hill on NFL’s waiver wire

Sean Payton was watching preseason film of Max McCaffrey in 2017 when he noticed then-Packers quarterback Taysom Hill.

Each summer, 32 NFL teams trim their rosters from 90 players down to 53-man squads with more than 1,000 players being waived or released.

Teams then sort through the waiver wire and claim select players cut by other clubs. Eight years ago, the Green Bay Packers waived backup quarterback Taysom Hill. White reviewing film of recently waived wide receiver Max McCaffrey, then-New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton noticed Hill.

“I was looking at Max McCaffrey at Green Bay — it was midnight — for a practice squad [spot], and I kept noticing this No. 7 at quarterback,” Payton recalled earlier this week after the Denver Broncos made their roster cuts. “We got more tape, and it was Taysom Hill. There was a play where he scrambled 43 yards for a touchdown. If you watched it, when he got to the end zone, the whole bench emptied, kind of like ours did the other night.

“I called [Jeff] Ireland in, and I said, ‘What do you see here? Well, you see a fast quarterback, but then watch what happens afterwards.’ So we claimed him at the 11 spot.”

Payton found Hill in 2017 and it paid off big time for the Saints. The quarterback became a do-it-all-player in New Orleans, totaling 3,352 all-purpose yards and scoring 38 touchdowns over the last six seasons. Hill has also played more than 1,000 snaps on special teams with the Saints.

Payton was not awarded any players off waivers with the Broncos after roster cuts this year, but he’s constantly looking for the next overlooked gem.

“There is that uneasy feeling that someone’s out there,” Payton said. “Where are they? You do your best to try to find them.”

Sean Payton says Broncos’ punter competition wasn’t very close

Trenton Gill averaged 48.6 net yards per punt in preseason, best in the NFL. Yet Riley Dixon won the job and it wasn’t really close.

The raw stats suggest Trenton Gill had a better preseason than Denver Broncos incumbent punter Riley Dixon this summer.

Gill and Dixon both got five punts in preseason. Gill averaged 53.6 yards per punt with a net average of 48.6 yards per punt (best in the NFL this summer). Dixon averaged 46.6 yards with a net average of 41.6.

Yet it was Dixon who made the 53-man roster.

“I don’t think [Gill] had the better numbers overall in the preseason,” Payton said when asked about the team’s decision. “I think Riley won that position. We’ve had a lot of battles. I don’t know that that one was that close.”

Hill showed off his powerful leg in preseason with a 73-yard long that improved his average, but he also had a 34-yard shank. Dixon was more consistent, and he presumably looked better in practice, right?

“All of it,” Payton said when asked what separated Dixon. “All of it.”

Perhaps its telling that waiver claims have processed and teams are filling up their practice squads and Gill is still available. Whether it was his hang time, the inconsistency, or something else, Gill’s overall summer was not as good as Dixon’s, even if the game numbers suggest otherwise.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach reveals thoughts on cutting Louis Rees-Zammit

Kansas City #Chiefs general manager Brett Veach reveals thoughts on cutting Louis Rees-Zammit | @EdEastonJr

The Kansas City Chiefs parted ways with plenty of prospects due to roster cuts as they reshaped their roster for the 2024 season.

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach spoke with reporters on Thursday via Zoom about the decision to cut former Rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit.

“We kept it open; we wanted the kid to really look at maybe some different opportunities as well. It’s pretty remarkable when you think about a player that doesn’t have any pro-American football experience. No middle school, no high school, no big-time college experience.” said Veach. “We were kind of thinking about it going through camp. Imagine not having any sort of foundational background, just being thrown in and doing one-on-one pass-pros with a Drue Tranquill or a Nick Bolton. I mean, that’s pretty incredible.”

Rees-Zammit played in all three preseason games, showing his versatility in different positions. Veach took notice but potentially didn’t see his development working in time to make the roster.

“Running back, maybe a big slot receiver, I think he does have some potential as a returner. I’m not sure he couldn’t be a kicker,” said Veach. “I mean, he had an outstanding leg, and with this new rule, he can do some different things, provide some versatility.”

Rees-Zammit wasn’t a free agent for long as he landed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Veach believes it has much to do with the international influence.

“I think the Jacksonville thing, and their relationship overseas and what that brings to the table, going overseas twice a year,” said Veach. “I think that was probably something that interested him, phenomenal kid, phenomenal worker, and again, just thinking back on the tremendous amount of progress he made in a short amount of time, I think he’ll continue to grow and develop, and I think he found a really good spot there in Jacksonville.”

Rees-Zammit’s time with the Chiefs was brief, but it was enough for him to land with another team. The Chiefs are building for an immediate three-peat, and the roster is primed with Super Bowl aspirations.

Jonas Griffith a candidate to re-join Broncos after recovering from injury

Jonas Griffith is a potential candidate to re-join the Broncos in a few weeks after he’s recovered from an injury, according to 9News.

Former Denver Broncos linebacker Jonas Griffith is currently recovering from an injury and could be a candidate to re-join the team in “a couple weeks” once he’s healthy, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Griffith (6-4, 250 pounds) was a surprise cut on Tuesday when the Broncos finalized their 53-man roster. He originally landed in Denver in 2021 via trade from the San Francisco 49ers.

Griffith totaled 92 tackles, five quarterback hits, one interception, one fumble recovery and one pass breakup in 22 games (12 starts) with the Broncos from 2021-2022. He missed 25 games due to injuries over the last two years, including all of last season with a torn ACL.

Denver is set to start Alex Singleton and Cody Barton at inside linebacker this year. The team also brought back special teams ace Justin Strnad and they added Kristian Welch to the roster on Thursday.

Just as they did last year, the Broncos are now set to go into the 2024 NFL season with four inside linebackers on the active roster. We’ll see if Griffith returns later this year.
