Report: Second year QB Reid Sinnett attending Dolphins rookie minicamp

When the Miami Dolphins’ rookies arrive this weekend at the team facilities for rookie minicamp, they’ll be greeted by a quarterback who went through this very same process for the first time last year. We aren’t talking about Tua Tagovailoa, however, we’re talking about 2020 third-string quarterback Reid Sinnett — who appears well positioned to maintain that role for the Dolphins once again in 2021 after the Dolphins signed Jacoby Brissett to take Ryan Fitzpatrick’s spot in the Dolphins’ quarterback room.

The report confirming Sinnett’s attendance at rookie minicamp comes courtesy of Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald:

“The Dolphins will hold a rookie mini-camp on Friday through Sunday, and according to a league source, there will be at least one second-year player in attendance: quarterback Reid Sinnett.

Tua Tagovailoa will not participate; it would be highly unusual for a second-year high draft pick to participate in a rookie mini-camp.” Barry Jackson, Miami Herald

Sinnett dressed for games on Sunday twice during his rookie season in Miami: once in Week 12 against the New York Jets with Tua Tagovailoa sidelined with an injury to the thumb on his throwing hand and again in Week 17 when Ryan Fitzpatrick was deemed ineligible to play after a positive test for COVID-19. But the undrafted rookie out of the University of San Diego failed to see game action in any instance. The Dolphins would be unfortunate to see any of Sinnett in action again this season, too — as such would indicate that both Tagovailoa and Brissett would be inactive with injury.

But Sinnett will be the only show in town at quarterback for the Dolphins this weekend at rookie camp, for whatever that’s worth.

Cowboys’ offseason workout dates announced

The NFL has announced dates for all 32 teams’ voluntary workout programs, plus details of what’s permitted in each phase of the offseason.

The NFL is in a scheduling frame of mind. With less than a week before the release of the 2021 regular season game schedule, the league has now also set dates for all 32 teams’ offseason programs.

The programs occupy a nine-week span and are voluntary, as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The sessions are meant to give players “training, teaching, and physical conditioning” before the more physical training camps get underway later in the summer.

Here are the official dates for the Cowboys:

Rookie Minicamp: May 14-16
OTA Offseason Workouts: May 24-25, May 27, June 1, June 3-4
Mandatory Minicamp: June 8-10

The offseason program is broken down into three phases that dictate the level of contact and exposure for players.

Dallas is currently in Phase One, a four-week period (up from the usual two) that includes strength and conditioning, virtual meetings, and physical rehabilitation only. Phase One ends on May 14, when Cowboys rookie minicamp commences.

Phase Two lasts for just one work week, May 17 to 21, down from the typical three weeks. On-field workouts may include individual player instruction and drills. Players are allowed to line up across from one another and do “walkthroughs” of plays, but contact is not allowed.

Phase Three begins on May 24 and goes until June 18, its customary four-week length. In-person meetings and classroom instruction are allowed, subject to COVID-19 testing and tracking, facility access, and other protocols. Ten days of organized team practice activity are permitted; the Cowboys have six days scheduled. There is no live contact, but 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed.

It’s beginning to look a lot like football.

Colts begin 2021 rookie minicamp

The Colts begin their rookie minicamp this weekend.

The Indianapolis Colts will begin their rookie minicamp this weekend starting on Friday, May 7 to Sunday, May 9.

This is a big weekend for the rookies to get acclimated to the NFL. In attendance will be the seven draft picks the Colts made along with the five undrafted rookie free agents that signed with the team this week. There will also be a few players attending on a tryout basis.

The Colts are among three teams, along with the New York Jets and Las Vegas Raiders, to hold their rookie minicamp this week. The rest of the league will be conducting theirs next week.

The Colts couldn’t have their typical rookie minicamp, or any of the offseason workouts, during the 2020 offseason because of COVID-19. Thankfully, it seems things will somewhat get back to normal.

This will be a big weekend for the rookies as it will be the first time they step on the field as a member of the Colts.

NFL limits teams to only 5 tryout players at rookie minicamps in 2021

The National Football League has limited teams to just five tryout players at rookie minicamps this year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The coronavirus pandemic continues to have an impact on how business is conducted around the National Football League entering into the 2021 season.

For safety’s sake, NFL teams will be limited to a maximum of five tryout players at rookie minicamps next month, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday.

During a normal preseason, some clubs – like the Seahawks – invite a number of players to try out with the new drafted and undrafted rookie class. Last year, since all rookie camps were canceled due to the pandemic, no one got the chance to impress. In 2021, at least a few players will get their shot at earning a roster spot.

As Seahawks.com reporter, John Boyle points out, defensive end Benson Mayowa was once a try-out player and now has a solid career.

Sibling Rivalry: Cowboys rookie CB Trevon Diggs sharpened offseason skills vs brother Stefon

The new Dallas cornerback spent the COVID-isolated offseason training against his older brother, who just happens to be an NFL pro wideout.

With no formal offseason program to speak of, NFL players were left mostly to their own devices during the initial shelter-at-home portion of the coronavirus saga. Workouts were largely solo efforts, often done in sterile environments and under unusual circumstances. Cone drills in the backyard, neighborhood runs wearing a helmet, and bench pressing kids in the living room suddenly became commonplace as players did what they could to stay ready for football.

It was even more difficult for the newbies. With no access to their club facilities, no rookie minicamp to attend, no established network of teammates, and no prior experience with how to train for an NFL season, the Class of 2020 is coming in fresher and greener than most.

Except for new Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs. The team’s second-round draft pick stayed loose and got sharp by running coverage against his older brother, Bills wide receiver Stefon Diggs.

The Diggs brothers spent time in Miami working out together. Trevon says he won most of their one-on-one battles, but admits his brother may not have been going full-speed.

“When I was in high school, we trained together every day, so it felt good to get back to training with him,” Trevon said, according to ESPN’s Todd Archer. “He knows what it takes to get there. I just followed his lead and competed with him every day.”

The Alabama product is bringing that same mentality with him as Cowboys training camp finally gets underway in Frisco.

The Cowboys and Bills aren’t scheduled to meet during the 2020 regular season, so fans won’t get to see the brothers go head-to-head this year. It will be a real treat when it finally happens; the two clearly share a special relationship, as evidenced by the video message that Stefon shared with his little brother the night the Cowboys drafted Trevon.

Even as Trevon begins his rookie training camp, he’s still relying on regular advice from his big brother.

“He’s been a blessing. I call him every day, after everything I do, after every meeting. Just trying to get tips, things he went through that he can help me on,” Diggs said per the team website. “He’s been a real help for me this offseason, just trying to prepare me for the NFL – getting my body right, getting my conditioning right, and doing everything I can to be able to compete in this league.”

But first, Diggs will be competing against multi-year veterans like Anthony Brown, Chidobe Awuzie, Jourdan Lewis, and Daryl Worley- as well as fellow rookie Reggie Robinson- for a spot in Dallas’s starting lineup.

If he does claim a starting role, it may be due in part to all those reps he took this offseason against the five-year veteran in Buffalo who shares his last name.

“The most helpful advice he told me is just to never quit. Keep working, keep working hard every day. Compete, compete, compete,” Trevon said. “The only way to give yourself a chance is to do everything right. That’s one of the main things he told me, so that’s my main focus: listen and try to compete.”
