‘Now it’s a job:’ Will McClay’s scouting report on all 11 Cowboys draft picks

The team’s VP of player personnel offers advice for the team’s rookies ahead of minicamp and gives his thoughts on each player.

Welcome to the NFL, rookies.

Friday marks the start of minicamp for 29 NFL teams, including the Cowboys. Drafted prospects, undrafted free agents, and others simply invited for tryouts- 31 players in all- will go through three days of initial evaluation at The Star in Frisco as they prepare to compete with the team’s veterans for a spot on the final roster.

Will McClay, the Cowboys’ vice president of player personnel and the man who had a hand in each one of them being given the opportunity, had a final word of advice for the youngsters.

“This isn’t college anymore,” McClay said, in part. “Now it’s a job.”

ESPN’s Todd Archer got McClay’s scouting report on all 11 of the Cowboys’ draft picks as they prepare for their first day on the company payroll. Here are excerpts from his comments:

Cowboys sign 4 draft picks to rookie contracts day before minicamp

The team’s fifth- through seventh-round selections all inked their deals prior to the start of Friday’s minicamp session.

The Cowboys made it official with four of their 2021 draft picks just a day ahead of the kickoff of rookie minicamp.

Wide receiver Simi Fehoko, defensive tackle Quinton Bohanna, cornerback Israel Mukuamu, and guard Matt Farniok each signed a four-year contract with the club on Thursday. Minicamp was set to begin the next morning at The Star in Frisco.

Those players represent the Cowboys’ final four selections of this year’s draft class; they were taken in the fifth, sixth, and seventh rounds. The team’s other seven draft picks still have an opportunity to sign a deal before the start of Friday’s practice, but rookies are permitted to take part in camp sessions even without a contract.

They will be joined by this year’s crop of undrafted free agents, tryout invitees, and first-year veterans who spent last season on the practice squad. The team expects 31 players in all to participate in minicamp, which goes through Sunday.

Micah Parsons set to start Cowboys minicamp at middle LB

The first-rounder says he’ll start the team’s rookie camp at the position he played in college and is already scouting the 2021 schedule.

Micah Parsons raised a few eyebrows during draft weekend when he announced that he wanted to wear his familiar No. 11 for the Cowboys. Now, about to tackle his first day of minicamp as an NFL rookie, he’s also secured the position he prefers to play.

“Right now, I’m at MIKE linebacker,” the 21-year-old told the team website, referring to the middle linebacker role he filled at Penn State. “Looking at the playbook, this is a position for me to go sideline to sideline and make a lot of plays and really stop that run, how I’m supposed to do.”

As rookie minicamp kicks off on Friday, the Cowboys will feature just 31 players, according to the team. Leighton Vander Esch, Jaylon Smith, Keanu Neal, and fellow rookie Jabril Cox will all figure into the linebacker mix this season as well; the exact spot Parsons eventually occupies could obviously change by the time the competition across the line of scrimmage is wearing different colors.

To that end, the first-round selection is also quickly adjusting to the idea that in the pros, there are no non-conference matchups to ease into things once the season begins. He’ll be making his NFL debut against none other than five-time Super Bowl MVP Tom Brady, who himself was drafted out of the Big Ten in 2000… before Parsons had even celebrated his first birthday.

“I was, like, ‘Wow,'” Parsons smiled when asked about the Cowboys’ upcoming schedule. “It’s definitely weird coming into the NFL. You’ve got Tom Brady [in the] first game, then you’ve got [Patrick] Mahomes down the line. I said, ‘We’ve got all the nice running backs.’ I said, ‘That’s cool. Whatever. Can’t do nothing about it.’ Got to play ball no matter what, right?”

And starting now, Parsons in playing ball in the NFL.

Bears announce 2021 undrafted free agent class of 15 players

The Bears announced the signings of 12 undrafted rookie free agents and three first-year pros ahead of rookie minicamp on Friday.

Here’s a look at those undrafted free agents:

Report: Jags to limit Trevor Lawrence’s participation in rookie mini-camp

Trevor Lawrence will take a Jags practice field for the first time ever this weekend, but will be limited in the process.

Like every member from the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2021 rookie class, first overall pick Trevor Lawrence will be participating in rookie mini-camp this weekend. However, with him coming off labrum surgery on his non-throwing shoulder three months ago, the Jags will limit his activity although NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport believes he’ll at least be on the field.

Rapoport added that Lawrence is doing fine with his rehab process and will be available for Jags training camp.

Lawrence decided to address the issue with his non-throwing shoulder after declaring for the NFL Draft. After speaking with Jags coach Urban Meyer, he decided to have his pro day earlier than expected on Feb. 12 and looked solid in the process.

Dr. Neal ElAttrache of Kerlan-Jobe in Los Angeles performed the surgery on Feb. 16 and there were no reported issues or setbacks afterward. Three weeks ago, Lawrence was seen in a video throwing again, which further confirmed how well he’s doing post-surgery.

Clearly, the surgery didn’t sway the Jags’ thoughts on Lawrence and they ended up selecting first overall last month. And while he won’t be taking part in mini-camp like other rookies around the league have, it still will be good to see him on the field processing information with his new coaches.

Penei Sewell will miss Lions rookie minicamp after testing positive for COVID-19

Sewell announced his positive test on his social media feeds

This weekend was supposed to be the Detroit debut of Lions first-round pick Penei Sewell. Unfortunately, the team’s first-round pick will not be making his first appearance in a Lions uniform after all.

Sewell announced on his social media that he has tested positive for COVID-19 and will not be making the trip to Detroit for this week’s rookie minicamp. He is not cleared to travel or to have contact with his new Lions teammates or staffers.

All the other rookies are expected to be at the team’s training facility in Allen Park for the weekend minicamp. Sewell will get another chance to kick off his Lions OTAs in another two weeks for the first session of team OTAs.

Falcons invite former OSU receiver C.J. Saunders to rookie minicamp

The Atlanta Falcons’ appear to be sticking with highly-paid veterans Matt Ryan and Julio Jones for another season, but without the salary cap room to make any major moves, the team will be forced to count on several rookies to play meaningful snaps.

One name to watch out for when rookie minicamp starts this Friday is former Ohio State wide receiver C.J. Saunders. As first reported by Dan Hope of Eleven Warriors, Saunders has been invited to Falcons rookie minicamp.

Once voted a team captain at Ohio State, Saunders missed the 2019 season with a knee injury and wasn’t granted an additional year of eligibility by the NCAA. Instead, the Buckeyes wideout was forced to take a role as a graduate assistant in 2020.

Saunders played 16 games at OSU, recording 27 catches for 294 yards and one touchdown. He also adds some special-teams ability, returning eight punts for 50 total yards and two punts for 25 yards.
