Boston’s Romeo Langford, Robert Williams III off the latest team injury report

This time, we really might see Romeo Langford this season.

If nothing out of left field ends up happening before this coming Friday evening, we may yet see second-year shooting guard Romeo Langford make his season debut. Unfortunately for Langford however, the Indiana native has made a name for himself because of things coming out of left field to affect his availability.

It’s no fault of Langford’s that he has yet to play this season, having taken longer than expected to recover from surgery on a torn tendon in his wrist sustained in the Disney bubble while playing for the team in the 2020 NBA playoffs, only to be forced into the league’s health and safety protocols the very day he was hoping to get on the floor to play his first game of the 2020-21 season.

It’s gotten to the point where internet humorists have started questioning whether the Indiana product even exists.

Celtics Romeo Langford OUT vs. Mavs, Jaylen Brown upgraded to available

The second-year win will have to wait just a bit longer to make his season debut.

Those among us waiting for Boston Celtics second-year shooting guard Romeo Langford to finally make his debut with the team after an extended absence from the court will have to wait a little longer that the team’s home tilt with the Dallas Mavericks tonight.

The upside is that All-Star forward Jaylen Brown will be able to play after missing Monday’s loss to the New Orleans Pelicans with a left hip contusion. Per the team, Langford is officially out with “post health and safety protocol reconditioning” as the listed reason, the Indiana native likely not quite up to game shape after an extended rehabilitative process.

He will join big man Tristan Thompson (health and safety protocols) and forward Semi Ojeleye (left side strain) as scratches for the contest, but should return to action soon, albeit in shorter stints.

Smith: Aaron Nesmith ‘drawing a good deal more interest … than Romeo Langford’

Aaron Nesmith is evidently the more attractive young prospect at the moment, at least on the trade market.

If you have a soft spot in your heart for rookie Aaron Nesmith as a Boston Celtic, it might be wise to steel it a bit for what could be coming in the next several hours.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Keith Smith, Nesmith is “drawing a good deal more interest from opposing teams than Romeo Langford,” with Smith hearing similar opinions from teams not involved in trade talks. “That tracks,” Smith was reportedly told. “Langford is such an unknown. That goes back to the draft. Nothing has changed since then.” Nesmith hasn’t played a lot of minutes this season to be sure, but he has looked like a solid prospect.

Those of us who were paying attention to Langford’s play in the bubble might feel that the Indiana native is at least as much of a prospect based on his excellent defense in those games, but recency bias seems to rule the day in this market.

It seems very likely one of the two will be in a new uniform should the Celtics pull off any deal of note.

And with the move by the Orlando Magic to deal Nikola Vucevic to the Chicago Bulls, it seems increasingly likely that Boston could land Aaron Gordon.

Report: Aaron Nesmith could be part of Celtics’ offer for Aaron Gordon

The Celtics have been linked to Gordon, and have reportedly put rookie Aaron Nesmith on the trading block.

With less than one day to go until the NBA trade deadline, the Boston Celtics are one team expected to be active in trade discussions for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon.

Of course, news broke on Monday that Gordon formally requested a trade from the Magic after growing frustration with losses and injuries in recent years. He reportedly wants to join a contender, which would certainly leave the Celtics in the mix.

On Tuesday, Gordon addressed the reported trade rumors following a blowout loss to the Denver Nuggets.

“There have been times where I just expressed my frustration to management,” Gordon said. “Frustration with the losses, the injuries, the way we’ve been playing, how we’ve been playing and how many losses have accumulated over the years. So, it’s just my frustration kind of boiling over, I would say. I think a lot of people share that sentiment with me of frustration.”

According to Brian Robb of MassLive, the Celtics are offering the Magic a future first-round pick and a young player, either rookie Aaron Nesmith or second-year guard Romeo Langford for Gordon. The Celtics are not expected to include Marcus Smart in a potential package.

Armed with several young players, the Celtics likely want to try to package one of them in order to acquire additional help for a playoff push. Gordon, through 24 games this season, is averaging 14.6 points and 6.6 rebounds on a career-high 39.3% shooting from 3-point range.

While the Celtics have shown interest in Gordon, other teams, including the Denver Nuggets and Houston Rockets, have also been high on Gordon recently so Boston could find themselves in a bidding war for the seventh-year player.

Gordon has one year left on his contract, but with the Magic likely out of the picture, the organization will certainly look to flip him if they can land a promising young player or draft assets. With Boston having both, they could be the frontrunner for Gordon.

Thompson joins Langford in health, safety protocols ahead of Jazz tilt

Both Thompson and Langford will remain in the league’s health and safety protocols for the time being.

The Boston Celtics will be without more than just second-year wing Romeo Langford when they play the Utah Jazz Tuesday evening, with veteran big man Tristan Thompson joining the shooting guard on the league’s health and safety protocols, per the team.

While Thompson’s situation moving forward remains unclear ahead of the looming March 25 NBA trade deadline, head coach Brad Stevens related he expects Langford to remain out for the Celtics’ next two games on Wednesday and Friday while speaking to the press ahead of Boston’s home tilt with the Jazz, placing the Indiana native’s earliest return to action at Sunday, March 21 against the Orlando Magic at TD Garden.

It would be his season debut, with Langford yet to see the floor this season after a lengthy recovery from surgery on a tendon in his wrist hurt during the 2020 NBA postseason.

It is unclear whether either player’s presence actually impacts the team’s plans for the trade deadline, but it certainly gives the Celtics far fewer opportunities to see the team at full strength.

If that is even a possibility with Thompson’s situation now murky regarding his potential return.

Langford, near a return, now out indefinitely in health and safety protocols

The second-year wing’s return will have to wait a while longer.

It’s looking like we are going to have to wait a little longer for second-year wing Romeo Langford to make his season debut for the Boston Celtics.

Langford, who has been out since last season’s playoffs with a torn tendon in his wrist he has since been rehabilitating, had been rumored to return soon after the All-Star break by teammate Daniel Theis. At the team’s first post-practice press conference since before the All-Star game on Wednesday, head coach Brad Stevens was asked about Langford’s participation. “Everybody practiced but Romeo,” revealed Stevens. “Romeo was out because of health and safety protocols, he was cleared to clear to play.”

Explaining he did not know what exactly that meant for the young wing going forward regarding COVID-19 positivity, but added that he did not practice with the team and that “he will not travel with us” on the team’s two road games against the Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets.

Presumably more information will be forthcoming about Langford’s situation in the coming days, but for now all we can do is wait and hope it isn’t anything serious.

Celtics exercise options on Grant, Robert Williams, Romeo Langford

Boston picked up its options on the trio of young Celtics, as expected.

To little surprise, the Boston Celtics have picked up their options on big men Robert Williams III, Grant Williams and second-year wing Romeo Langford on Tuesday per multiple sources, an expected outcome given the solid play of all three when healthy.

Time Lord — as the hyper-athletic Texas A&M product is sometimes called — has shown flashes at the end of last season and start of this one of becoming a starter-level big man with improved passing, shooting, and most importantly defense, but missed a large chunk of the 2019-20 season due to injury. Similarly, Langford’s rookie season was marred by a litany of unlucky minor injuries capped off with a torn tendon he is still recuperating from.

Grant Williams on the other hand has been the picture of health since joining the team, and all three have shown they can stay on the floor and help a high-level team.

For that reason, today’s options picked up by the Celtics was more formality than anything else — save perhaps a vote of confidence in Langford and Robert Williams’ ability to stay healthy moving forward.

Celtics Walker, Langford, Fall OUT vs Brooklyn Nets Christmas Day game

No real surprises on the Celtics injury list — and the Nets are at full health.

The Boston Celtics play the Brooklyn Nets in a rematch of their 113 – 89 preseason drubbing on Dec. 18th, with tipoff set for 5pm ET.

The Nets are enjoying the early fruits of their two best players having had the time they need to recuperate from serious injuries over the course of the last year, with point guard Kyrie Irving having surgery for a shoulder impingement and forward Kevin Durant returned from an achilles injury that forced the former Golden State Warrior to miss the entirety of the 2019-20 NBA season. The Celtics are in a comparatively poor state of health, but hope to use the early part of the 2020-21 season to prepare their own injured players.

Those players are of course starting point guard Kemba Walker and wing Romeo Langford, with the UConn product rehabilitating his often-sore knee and the Indiana native working his way back from surgery to repair a torn tendon.

They are joined by two way center Tacko Fall, who will also sit for the Christmas Day game with eye irritation.

As for the Nets, the team has a clean bill of health from the top to the bottom of their roster, which owns a 1 – 0 record along with the Celtics, each having bested their season opener opponent.

Boston will miss Walker’s scoring considerably against this supercharged Brooklyn offense, and the luxury of being able to deploy Langford for wing depth will also be a challenge for the Celtics.

But if Boston can replicate some of the connected play demonstrated against the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 23, there’s a real chance to hand their Atlantic Division rivals their first L of the season despite the absence of this trio.

Walker, Thompson, Langford OUT vs 76ers; Theis questionable

Kemba Walker, Tristan Thompson and Romeo Langford will not play in Boston’s preseason tilt vs. Philly, and Daniel Theis is questionable.

It’s become a popular refrain to hear that the best ability is availability, but for their first preseason game of their 2020-21 campaign, the Boston Celtics will have at least a few unavailable players when they tip off against the Philadelphia 76ers at 7:30 pm ET this evening.

Starting All-Star point guard Kemba Walker is still going to be out as he rehabilitates his often-balky knee with a stem cell injection and strengthening regimen, and second-year wing Romeo Langford will also miss the contest as he recovers from surgery on a torn tendon. New Boston big man Tristan Thompson will also miss the game with a hamstring strained in a workout, and fellow Celtic center Daniel Theis may well miss the game with a sore back.

On the other side of the ball, the Sixers, only small forward Terrance Ferguson is a potential scratch, listed as questionable in the league’s injury report for the contest with a left ankle sprain.

Don’t take too much from this contest either way it breaks given it’s a preseason game, but it will be interesting to see how Boston adapts to this most early appearance of the so-called “Hospital” Celtics.
