Sheila Ford-Hamp: Takeaways from the Lions owner’s press conference in firing Bob Quinn and Matt Patricia

Ford-Hamp talked about why she fired QuinnTricia, Stafford’s future and more

Detroit Lions owner Sheila Ford-Hamp made it a happy Thanksgiving weekend for long-suffering fans of the team on Saturday. Ford-Hamp fired GM Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia after another embarrassing loss, this one on Thursday to a Texans team that already cleaned house earlier this season.

The new owner, who took over in December for her mother, Martha Ford, earned some goodwill with the move. And in her press conference announcing the firings, Ford-Hamp struck a lot of high notes that should engender some confidence that the team will head in the right direction.

In her first time speaking in public since taking over the team, Ford-Hamp admitted the ugly losses in the last two weeks forced her to change her mind on keeping the Quinn/Patricia combination.

“Honestly, yes,” Ford-Hamp said when asked if the losses to Carolina and Houston in a span of four days made the difference. “Ten days ago, we looked like we had a good chance to be playoff bound. Both of those games were extremely disappointing. It just seemed like the path going forward wasn’t what we wanted it to be. So yes, we thought this was a good time to make the change.”

She acknowledged her mandate of “meaningful games in December” she gave Quinn and Patricia when she took over meant something to her.

“I meant what I said last December, and I still mean it. So yes, things were not going well, it was not what we wanted. We were hoping to be playoff bound – I guess we still have a slight mathematical chance. But things were just not seeming to go in the right way.”

That shows Ford-Hamp is true to her word. She didn’t accept the excuses of the weird pandemic season or the myriad injuries all over the Lions roster. It also demonstrates Ford-Hamp is aware of the fan perception of the product of her team. Those are positives for the fans that we all needed to hear.

She didn’t bite on any questions about who she has in mind or what direction the team will turn in the hiring process. But she did handle the tricky question of Matthew Stafford’s future with the team with open-ended answers.

“Well since I’m not the coach, I’m probably not the right person to ask that question to. So, we’ll see what the new coach has to say,” Ford-Hamp said of the quarterback.

The follow-up question covered the same basic theme, and Ford-Hamp stayed true to her answer.

“I think he’s (an) extremely talented young man, and he’s tough as nails. It’s been tough for him. Again, I think (the new) coach will make that decision.”

She indicated, as did team president Rod Wood, that the team would be open to using outside resources to help find the replacements. Wood did note that the Lions have not yet engaged with any search firm, dispelling a rumor they already had.

Ford-Hamp also showed some self-awareness in respect to the fans who believe that the ownership has been the fundamental root of all the team’s problems over the last few decades.

“Well, again, hindsight is 20-20. Yes, mistakes have been made,” she said without pandering. “I’ll be the first one to admit when I’m making mistakes, too. I’ll look at that, but I really would rather look forward and try to really dig into what’s in front of me and make this hopefully a homerun for us. But it’s going to be a lot of work. Rod (Wood) and I are rolling up our sleeves already and we’re going to get to work immediately.”

That’s good. There’s a lot of work to be done and the Lions need to get it right in Mrs. Ford-Hamp’s first hire.

Lions announce partnership with BetMGM

In-person sports wagering is now legal in Michigan

The Detroit Lions have an official sports betting partner for the first time. The Lions have paired with BetMGM, an extension of the team’s prior partnership with MGM Resorts.

The BetMGM Sports Lounge at MGM Grand Detroit opened in March after in-person sports wagering was made legal in the state of Michigan. The partnership between the Lions and BetMGM also includes a bingo game on the Lions app that allows fans to predict certain outcomes throughout the game.

The Detroit Lions historic relationship with BetMGM has been years in the making and we’re proud to announce details of our official partnership,” said Detroit Lions Team President Rod Wood in a joint statement. “We’re continuously seeking new ways to entertain and involve our fans which is especially important during such unusual times; this partnership with BetMGM will provide additional and exciting opportunities to engage our fans.”

Lions Wire, via the USA TODAY SMG, also has a partnership with BetMGM, as a full disclosure. It is not in any way affiliated with the Detroit Lions or the team’s partnership with MGM.

Watch: Rod Wood leads tour of Lions practice facility in Allen Park

As the Detroit Lions have made several alterations to their training facility in Allen Park ahead of training camp and team president Rod Wood leads a tour of those changes.

Earlier this offseason the Detroit Lions Chief of Staff Kevin Anderson walked fans through alterations being made to Lions facility for reopening and now with training camp set to begin today team president Rod Wood leads another tour of the next round of changes.

The moment Wood steps into the building he needs to stop at a station to get his temperature taken. What’s interesting about this initial meeting is that based on the Lions coaches arrival video released yesterday, you can see that this station has already been upgraded.

Wood’s next stop was at the training room where they have socially distanced the training tables, including spreading them out into hallways to create space between players needing attention. The dining room has also been expanded, by creating a tented area outside of the building

Throughout the high traffic common spaces, there is new signage that is set up reminding people to wear masks and stay six feet apart. There are also cleaning wipes and hand sanitizers stationed to maintain cleanliness.

The indoor practice field has been partially converted into a team meeting room, where the Lions can fit all coaches and players in one open space at the same time while maintaining distancing protocols.

Finally, the lions have a temporary trailer set up outside for COVID-19 testing which figures to be one of the first stops of the day as players begin arriving in Allen Park today.

Lions announce ‘Training Camp Live’, a virtual experience for fans

With fans unable to attend 2020 training camps, the Detroit Lions announced “Training Camp Live”, as a virtual experience for fans.

With NFL fans unable to attend training camps in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Detroit Lions have found a unique and fun way to keep their fans involved.

Today, the team announced “Lions Training Camp Live”, as a virtual experience for fans that will include player and coaches interviews, analysis of events, and live practice footage via Detroitlions.com and the Lions’ mobile app.

“Bringing football to our fans during this unprecedented time has been an ongoing priority,” Lions’ Team President Rod Wood said in a press release. “While we will miss seeing them at Allen Park and the energy they bring to practice, we are excited to partner with Rocket Mortgage to provide a training camp viewing experience Lions fans have never had before.”

Also in the press release, the Lions mentioned that this event is “tentatively scheduled to debut August 12 when the team takes the practice field for the first time”. According to the NFL schedule — which will vary slightly by team –, this would mean this fan experience would take place during the ramp-up period and potentially carry over to non-padded practices around the 14th, and padded practice which could take place around the 17th.

As the schedule is finalized and more details on the virtual experience are released, we at Lions Wire will keep you up to date on all the innovative changes happening in Allen Park.

Watch: Dan Miller interviews Lions’ President Rod Wood

The “Voice of the Lions” Dan Miller interviews Detroit Lions’ President Rod Wood following Shelia Ford Hamp’s elevation to principal owner.

Recently, the “Voice of the Lions” Dan Miller interviewed Detroit Lions’ President Rod Wood following Shelia Ford Hamp’s elevation to principal owner, discussing a variety of topics.

The interview begins like most in today’s climate, with a focus around how Wood’s job has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. “We left (Allen Park) thinking we’d be gone for a couple of weeks and everything would get back to normal,” Wood said, “and now here we are almost the end of June, and everybody’s (still) working from home.”

Miller then pivoted the conversation towards what type of legacy Martha Firestone Ford was leaving behind.

“(She) became widely respected within the league,” Wood said. “And admired. And I don’t know that ever heard anybody, including Roger Goodell (NFL Comminishiner), call her anything other than Mrs. Ford — and that shows the level of respect that she had.”

Once the conversation shifted towards Shelia Ford Hamp, Wood discussed her (and the rest of the Ford families) desire to win, Hamp’s ability to gain experience working side-by-side with her mother, and creating her own mark as a leader.

Other topics discussed include the organization’s technological support team, how technology can help the team in the future, coaching/team leadership, the team bonding via social justice discussions and pandemic related situations, as well as how Wood’s job has changed in 2020, and how Allen Park is being prepped for football in the fall.
