Cher is appearing in her first-ever Roblox crossover in Warner Music’s Harmony Hills world, and you can even get some of her famous costumes available as in-game clothing. The Cher Roblox event lasts for four weeks and kicks off on Dec. 8, 2023, at 7 p.m. Eastern, with Harmony Hills sporting some new winter-themed looks and a few quests to complete.

“It’s an opportunity for Cher to introduce herself and her music to a brand new audience on a virtual platform where Gen Z & Alpha are spending their time (more time than they spend on either TikTok or YouTube),” metaverse developer Gamefam, who partnered with Warner Music for the event, said in a press release.

“Holiday music is all about family and for Cher, being able to use Roblox as a platform for kids to discover and fall in love with her new holiday music demonstrates how artists like Cher can lean into emerging platforms and innovative virtual experiences to build the next wave of fandom.”

While it hasn’t quite reached Fortnite levels of popular awareness, Roblox is becoming a go-to platform for brands and artists to reach new audiences, with everything from Gucci to Saweetie making an appearance in the last year or so.

Each week introduces a new quest for players to complete, as they explore Harmony Hills and recover presents scattered around by a mischievous elf. Tracks from Cher’s recent holiday album will play at select locations in Harmony Hills, including the cafe, bakery, nightclub, and whenever you’re driving a car or attending a party, and you’ll interact with her Roblox model to get in-game rewards that resemble some of her iconic costumes.

The tracks you’ll hear include “DJ Play a Christmas Song,” “Angels in the Snow,” and “Drop Top Sleigh Ride,” the latter of which features Tyga.

Saweetie is starring in the first-ever Roblox Super Bowl concert

The first Roblox Super Bowl concert stars rapper Saweetie and the sandbox game event is an official part of the NFL’s Super Bowl celebration

The first Roblox Super Bowl concert stars rapper Saweetie and the sandbox game event is an official part of the NFL’s Super Bowl celebrations. The Roblox concert takes place on the new, specially built world Rhythm City, built by Warner Music Group and metaverse gaming development and publishing group Gamefam, and premieres on Feb. 10, 2023, at 7 p.m. Eastern. It will run again every hour until Feb. 12, 2023.

“I’m really excited to bring this iconic moment to the metaverse and share my music with a whole new audience in such a unique way,” Saweetie said in a statement! As an artist, innovator, and football fan, to be able to perform during Super Bowl LVII weekend in this new world is something I never imagined that I would be involved in.”

On Feb. 4, 2023, the NFL is launching Super NFL Tycoon on Roblox, a fantasy sim management game that puts you in charge of every aspect of running an NFL team, from managing cash flow and building a stadium to drafting a team and that most enjoyable of activities, paying taxes.

Financial software company Intuit helped bring this experience to life, and Intuit chief marketing officer Lara Balazs hopes it can help provide a foundation in financial management for younger players who don’t have access to personal finance courses at their schools.

“The metaverse provides an age-appropriate environment to introduce younger people

to important financial concepts in a fun and engaging manner,” Balazs said. “We are proud to bring this fun learning opportunity to highly engaged sports and entertainment fans.”

And unlike some recent Roblox experiences, you don’t have to worry about navigating age restrictions and inappropriate content with these.

Parent issues warning after Roblox removes some age restrictions

Roblox age restrictions have been lifted for a set of controversial games, and one parent recommends deleting your child’s Roblox account

Roblox age restrictions are supposed to help protect younger players from games that may expose them to violent or sexual content, but industry personality Carolyn “Velociraptor” says that’s no longer the case. After seeing some of the most popular games on the PC gaming platform – so-called “toilet simulators” – and the content they contain, she strongly cautioned other parents to check what their children are playing on Roblox or just delete the accounts entirely.

The games in question are multiplayer experiences that “simulate” a public bathroom. Players enter a stall, remove the bottom half of their clothing, and the toilet turns yellow or brown. It’s seemingly innocuous – except they also encourage voyeurism and other adult behavior. Carolyn shared a video where her pantless character slipped on the bathroom floor and remained stuck in a lying position – apparently a common occurrence in these games – while other players repeatedly walked into her bottom half or crouched on it, seemingly imitating non-consensual sex.

In other instances, players would slip into a toilet stall before the door closed and watch the Roblox avatar remove their pants and use the toilet. One game even encourages players to take photos of other characters in the toilet stalls

Carolyn said she expects some level of inappropriate behavior in online multiplayer games. However, the problem is that Roblox says it manually curates all of its games and still approved these for all age groups, along with other experiences, such as horror games marketed to younger players where the goal is stabbing a popular cartoon character to death.

A Roblox developer told her in response to the concerns she raised that the team can’t control user behavior. The ESRB also cautions consumers that their ratings don’t extend to online interactions, though they do anticipate potentially problematic content based on what actions the game has players taking. In other words, if a game encouraged players to take photos of others using the toilet, it would certainly show up in the rating.

Manchester City unveils new soccer kit in Roblox

The wildly-popular English soccer club is teaming up with Puma and Roblox to show off new jerseys.

Weird collaborations are always fun, and one of the biggest teams in soccer is delving into a special metaverse event.

On Friday, Manchester City and Puma announced a collaboration with Roblox revealing an all-new line of 2022/23 alternate jerseys. It’s a bright yellow kit available in the real world and in-game. See what I mean about being strange? Manchester players like Laura Coombs, Kalvin Phillips, and Ruben Dias helped model the jerseys. Fans can scoop up the flashy threads for the next two weeks through in-game activities or purchase those items through the Puma gear shop.

Below is a brief video showing off the Manchester City jerseys in Roblox.

“We’re thrilled to continue evolving our experience within Roblox with our Puma and the Land of Games,” Ivan Dashkov, creative culture director at Puma, said via the Manchester City website. “We couldn’t think of a better partner than Manchester City and this kit launch to push the limits by doing something different and innovative. As we continue to test and learn in the Web3 space, we are looking forward to leveraging Roblox as a platform to connect with fans of all ages.”

Furthermore, Puma is hosting a “Football Rush” event that’ll be streaming on YouTube. It’s a 5v5 tournament with $10,000 awarded to the champions. So you better ask your kid how to ‘get good’ fast.

Maybe this will somewhat lessen the ‘oof’ removal that fans are still upset over.

Roblox’s iconic ‘oof’ sound is gone, and fans are losing it

Roblox’s infamous death sound effect has been removed, sending fans into a frenzy.

Anyone who’s sunk time into Roblox is familiar with the silly “oof” sound effect that plays whenever someone dies. For fans, it’s the stuff of legend — which is why they’re upset that it’s gone.

On Tuesday, Roblox Corporation removed “oof” from the game. That sound effect is actually from Messiah, an old first-person shooter whose creator, Tommy Tallarico, was never compensated for its use in Roblox. While everyone thought Roblox Corporation and Tallarico came to some licensing agreement in 2020, something clearly went south.

“Due to a licensing issue, we have removed the ‘oof’ sound from Roblox,” Roblox Corporation said on Twitter. “[We] have created a replacement default sound which launches today.”

As a result, Roblox fans are going through it. Most of them utterly detest the decision, venting frustration on social media. Check out some of the absolutely hilarious reactions below.

Spotify expands into Roblox, launches Spotify Island

Music streaming giant Spotify and kid-entertaining giga-giant Roblox have teamed up for a new location in-game known as Spotify Island.

Music streaming giant Spotify (disclosure, listening to something called ‘Flare of Defiance’ on the service right now, thanks Discover Weekly*) and kid-entertaining giga-giant Roblox have teamed up for a new location in-game known as Spotify Island. It’s designed as a place for fans and artists to mix and mingle, with two-way communication, and for quests, items, and more relating to the bands to be available. So far, two groups have been announced as taking part.

Exaggeratedly described as a “paradise of sound” in the press release, it’s designed to be “a wonderland of sounds, quests, and exclusive merch.” In gameplay terms, it’s a lot of exploring, finding easter eggs, messing around with sounds, and doing quests. There’s a chart system for collecting points through doing activities and various sub-islands dedicated to specific genres or bands.

The first of these is the understandably named K-Park, focusing on K-Pop. Stray Kids, a boy band, and SUNMI, a solo performer who has worked with League of Legends 2020 World Champions DWG KIA, are the first to sign up. Fans will have a “chance to interact” with them “later this spring” when K-Park launches. The sub-islands will be filled with their own quests and attached bits and pieces.

There are no ads on Spotify Island, but there is plenty of in-game merchandise for players to buy. That puts it all somewhere in the nebulous sphere of the metaverse, naturally, and combined with the young nature of Roblox’s audience, well, dangerous ground. Artists get a cut naturally, and it’ll all come down to price, amount of free content, and quality in the end. I’d probably buy an FF14 mount that plays Scar Symmetry’s Artificial Sun Projection, to be fair.

Spotify Island should be live in Roblox now.

*by time of finishing it was a song called No Heaven No Hell, by an instrumental artist called Alex Norre. It was pretty good, I have followed him on the platform.

Roblox is facing accusations of being unsafe for children

The platform has a lot of moderation issues.

People Make Games, a YouTube channel dedicated to analyzing gaming communities, is accusing the Roblox Corporation of its widely popular online gaming platform being unsafe for children.

Several months ago, the channel conducted an investigation in which it accused Roblox of  exploiting young video game developers. Roblox asked People Make Games to take the video about the matter down. They didn’t, instead digging deeper into more stories regarding child safety on the platform.

There’s been a massive problem with Roblox’s moderation for quite some time. In 2017, the company  closed its official forums  for an undisclosed reason. Since then, creators have taken to private Discord servers and social media for development inquiries, which Roblox Corporation does not moderate. People Make Games says this reportedly leads to children being exploited by external companies for labor, often without knowing it. Content made by child developers, such as cosmetic items, can sell for up to $15,000, according to Eurogamer. Roblox itself reportedly takes a 30 percent cut of all items sold on the Roblox Collectible Market.

You can watch the complete video from People Make Games  below. As a word of warning, it contains heavy subject matter regarding child exploitation and could be potentially triggering for some viewers.

The video also dives into the dangers of black markets where sellers put up external websites to avoid Roblox’s  30 percent share. Again, there is no moderation from the company itself to protect younger developers and players.

An anonymous source told People Make Games  that the black market is vital to Roblox’s  economy.

“Everybody is using these sites from top game developers down,” the anonymous source said  via Eurogamer. “Of course, people who get caught doing it, their accounts are banned, so Roblox has to somewhat enforce it, but at the same time most people turn to that because Devex (converting in-game currency to real money) is kind of a gamble in the first place!”

The Roblox Corporation did not respond to most of People Make Games’  inquires on the matter. The company, however, did issue a statement regarding these external sites.

“We also encourage our users to keep their interactions and communications on the platform where we are able to monitor and intervene,” Roblox Corporation said  via Eurogamer. “Often, scams and other abuses happen off the platform on other sites with less stringent systems – such as text filters – in place. This is why it is expressly against our policies to direct users offsite.”
