The Celtics’ reign atop the East could be short-lived with Robert Williams out indefinitely

Not good.

Boston Celtics center Robert Williams has a torn meniscus in his left knee, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Monday. He’s expected to miss a minimum of several weeks, likely putting any potential return well into the postseason (just two weeks remain in the regular season). It’s devastating blow for a team that his been on a roll of late.

Boston has taken over first place in the Eastern Conference behind a 22-3 record in its last 25 games. Prior to the stretch, the Celtics were 23-24 on the season and 10th place in the East. Now they have the fourth-shortest odds to win the conference at +450 and are tied for the fifth-shortest to win a title at +900.

Those chances take a hit without Williams, their starting center and anchor of a defense that was the catalyst for Boston’s rise up the standings.

Williams is Boston’s leading rebounder, nearly averaging a double-double at 10.0 points per game and 9.6 rebounds. About four of those boards come on offense, where he ranks fourth in the NBA in offensive rebounds. Those second-chance opportunities and high-efficiency points from the paint is what Boston will miss most on the offensive end. Williams brings a load of energy as a lob threat and he shoots nearly 74% from the field.

He also brings that athleticism on the defensive end as someone with the foot speed to switch on smaller players and the size to contest bigger players — he averages over two blocks per game. Without him, Boston has options at center like Al Horford and Daniel Theis but less depth as the rotation changes.

Boston’s league-best defensive rating is a product of a team effort, so while they’ll miss him, they shouldn’t see an exponential drop-off without Williams. In the team’s recent stretch of wins, Boston is 2-1 in games without him. But even a few losses could have a big impact on the standings. Only half a game separates the Celtics from first and fourth place in the conference. And I expect that next loss to come Monday in Toronto (-7), their second game of a back-to-back.

Celtics release injury report ahead of Thunder game: Jaylen Brown out

The Boston Celtics will be without Jaylen Brown and could be missing Robert Williams, too. See their injury report against the OKC Thunder:

Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown will remain out against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday, the team announced.

This will be the eighth game in a row that Brown misses due to a right hamstring sprain. He suffered the injury in the third quarter of the game against the Miami Heat on Nov. 4.

That put a pause on a stellar start to the season in which Brown is averaging 25.6 points per game while flirting with a 50/40 shooting line.

Dennis Schroder is probable to play against his former team with a left ankle sprain, while Robert Williams is doubtful with left knee tendinopathy that has kept him out of the last two games.

Boston will have to take on an Oklahoma City team that has had a surprisingly strong start. The Thunder are 6-9 this season on the back of several comeback wins, including  a 26-point comeback over the Los Angeles Lakers. On Friday night, the Thunder very nearly overcame a 20-point deficit to the Milwaukee Bucks but ended up falling.

The Celtics will have to keep the Thunder at an arm’s distance and do so without Brown.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Time.

Celtics season preview: Are they better or worse without Brad Stevens?

The Boston Celtics were mediocre this past season but look to turn things around with a new coach as Ime Udoka has replaced Brad Stevens.

The Boston Celtics were mediocre last season but look to turn things around with a new coach in Ime Udoka replacing Brad Stevens.

Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, together, arguably compose one of the duos in the league. Both are incredibly strong scorers and have the ability to take the Celtics deep into the postseason in any given year. But after several significant changes along the periphery to their roster, will they have enough components necessary for a title run?

Below, check out our preview for the 2021-22 Celtics campaign.

WATCH: The best of Robert Williams’ 2020-21 season with the Celtics

Check out the top highlights from Robert Williams during the 2020-21 season with the Boston Celtics.

Though the Boston Celtics had an overall disappointing 2020-21 season, which ended in a 4-1 first round series loss to the Brooklyn Nets, the Celtics had some promising performances by from their young core. including center Robert Williams.

Time Lord had his most productive season yet, averaging 8.0 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.8 blocks in 52 games. Playing just under 19 minutes per game, Williams found himself battling injuries and minutes restrictions throughout the season.

Williams notched career-high’s in just about every major category this season, scoring 20 points and dishing out 8 assists on April 2 against the Houston Rockets, grabbing 15 rebounds on January 4 against the Toronto Raptors, and tying his career-high of 6 blocks on March 11 against the Brooklyn Nets.

With a new regime coming in the front office and coaching staff, having a healthy Williams would be a huge plus next year for the Celts. The presence he brings on the glass and defensive end plus his growing confidence on offense and sneaky-good passing can help Boston get back to where they belong.

Check out the video above of Time Lord’s best highlights of his 2020-21 season with the Celtics.

Stevens: Williams has ‘a little swelling’, thinks it’s ‘day-to-day’

Celtics coach Brad Stevens said that Robert Williams has a little swelling on his upper calf but thinks that the big man is just day-to-day.

The Boston Celtics will be without big man Robert Williams in tonight’s matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers due to right knee soreness as Williams popped up on the injury report this afternoon prior to be officially listed out.

Head coach Brad Stevens spoke to the media prior to tonight’s game and gave an update on the injury, stating that Williams had “a little swelling up around the upper calf behind his knee.

“We’re going to look at him again when we get back to Boston,” Stevens said. “They don’t think it’s anything more than day-to-day but gonna make sure.”

Williams was first listed on the injury report as questionable this afternoon before being downgraded to out due to the knee soreness.

In 47 games this season, Williams is averaging 8.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game.

Celtics injury news: Robert Williams downgraded to out vs. Lakers

Boston Celtics center Robert Williams will miss tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers due to right knee soreness.

After being a surprising late addition to the Celtics injury report this afternoon, being listed as questionable, Boston Celtics center Robert Williams has been downgraded once again prior to tonight’s tip-off.

Williams is officially listed as out for tonight’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers due to right knee soreness.

Robert Williams has shined as the starting center for the Celtics, notching a 9-2 record with Time Lord as a starter, averaging 10.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.0 blocks per game.

Williams joins Evan Fournier as the two Celtics out for tonight’s contest against the Lakers. as Fournier remains in health and safety protocol.

Fournier’s fourth quarter, Time Lord’s career-night leads Celts in win

A career-night from Robert Williams and a 20-point fourth quarter from Evan Fournier helped lead the Celtics over the Rockets, 118-102.

Newly acquired Boston Celtic Evan Fournier had himself quite the debut to remember — or not remember. Last week in his first game in green and white against the New Orleans Pelicans, Fournier scored 0 points while shooting 0-of-10 from the field in Boston’s 115 – 109 loss. Again, not an ideal start as a Celtic.

But tonight, in his third game in Boston, Fournier showed the Celtics fans just why Danny Ainge acquired him for two second-round picks prior to the trade deadline as Fournier scored 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting and 7-of-11 from downtown tonight, including 20 points in the fourth quarter, which helped lead the Celtics over the Rockets, 118 – 102.

Jarrett Allen shipped out of Brooklyn? B/R sees scenario where that happens

Jarrett Allen may not be the starting center in Brooklyn anymore, but does that mean the Nets should trade him?

[jwplayer UDQmnu1f-z6KDnl0B]

Jarrett Allen’s days as the starting center in Brooklyn may be behind him — and there might not be anything he can to do change that.

The Nets big man lost his job the second Jacque Vaughn took over as interim head coach in March. With Steve Nash, who’s friends with Kevin Durant, now the franchise’s head coach, it stands to reason he’s going to roll with DeAndre Jordan — also Durant’s buddy — as the team’s starting center.

After what happened in March, Allen wanted to prove in the Disney bubble that he’s still capable of being a starting NBA center. If that label is going to become a point of contention in Brooklyn, then maybe Greg Schwartz of Bleacher Report‘s trade proposal would be an idea worth considering.

But right now, the idea of sending Allen to Boston for Robert Williams, Carsen Edwards and a lottery-protected 2021 first-round pick doesn’t seem like a great idea. Though, if the Nets think they can get more out of the young pair than the Celtics are, then this deal becomes much more appealing for Brooklyn.

Carsen Edwards could pack a punch off the bench as a long-range threat and did so early in 2019-20, until he started slumping. Since then, he hasn’t been able to find his shot.

Still, keeping Allen is the way to go here.

Sixers identify 3 key actions that need to happen to beat Celtics in Game 2

The Philadelphia 76ers identify 3 actions for them to do in order to beat the Boston Celtics.

The Philadelphia 76ers fell flat in Game 1 as they were not able to execute the little things down the stretch as they fell behind in the series 0-1. In order to bounce back against the Boston Celtics, they believe there are a few actions that must be fixed in order to tie the series at 1.

One of them was turnovers as the team committed far too many of them in the Game 1 loss and they have to figure out a way to involve Joel Embiid as well. For coach Brett Brown, that is one of the issues the Sixers must fix heading into Game 2 on Wednesday.

“There’s three things that bother the heck out of me and I feel that if we can get on top of the three areas that stood out to me the most, handling the post,” said Brown before the game. “I think it can, maybe more, turnovers came from trying to get the ball inside. We need to be better in that environment, playing out of the post, delivering balls to the post, one.”

Another issue that arose was the perimeter defense. Without Ben Simmons, the Sixers have to rely on Josh Richardson and Matisse Thybulle to get the job done and in Game 1, the team struggled against Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown who combined for 61 points in the win.

“I think that we need to be better when you go to defense, just sitting down and having the ability to guard dynamic guards playing downhill,” Brown explained. “Whether it’s off a live ball, whether it’s off a catch go-go catch on a closeout, they went by us too easily and got into the paint.”

Finally, the offensive rebounds that Boston got late. The Celtics went a little bigger with Robert Williams and Enes Kanter down the stretch and that hurt the Sixers on the defensive glass. The Celtics were able to get a lot of extra possessions and that hurt them with the game in the balance at the time.

“Three, the Williams and Kanter long rebounds, we need to secure more defensive rebounds than we did,” Brown finished with. “I think that those three areas are the things that in the rearview mirror, you wish you did better.”

The Sixers and the Celtics tipoff at 6:30 p.m. EST on Wednesday looking to fix these issues. They will need to give it their all to avoid a very lonely 0-2 hole. [lawrence-related id=36965,36961,36957]
