Beneil Dariush says he intentionally played with words in Robert Whittaker callout to get everyone’s attention

Beneil Dariush explains how it was all part of his plan to confuse everyone with his callout of Robert Whittaker.

[autotag]Beneil Dariush[/autotag] is not the calling-out type, which is why he surprised everyone with his callout of [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag].

Dariush (18-4-1 MMA, 12-4-1 UFC) knocked out Drakkar Klose at UFC 248 in one of the best fights on the card. The soft spoken lightweight then took the mic to call out Whittaker – not for a fight, but for being a great dad.

But Dariush used the word “callout” instead of “shoutout,” which had people momentarily confused as to why Dariush would try to get a fight with a middleweight.

He said it was all part of his plan.

“I know what I did there, and I knew it was going to confuse some people, but that was the whole point,” Dariush told MMA Junkie. “To get everybody’s attention, I played with words a little bit. Plus, I’m sure if I go down to Australia, there’s a good chance Rob will call me to throw some pieces – and who’d say no to that? I’d love to go a few rounds with a champion.”

After a rough patch, which included a couple losses and a draw, Dariush has bounced back with four straight wins and three straight performance bonuses.

The win over Klose will likely set Dariush up for big things in the lightweight division, but he’s looking to take things one fight at a time.

“I always tell people your next fight is the most important fight of your career. So with that said, it would mean that my last fight was the most important one,” Dariush said. “I consider my last fight extremely important, and I’m putting it at the top. Obviously, it’ll fall into its natural order as soon as I fight again.

“Honestly, I’m not interested in picking names. Also, I have no clue what the UFC is thinking as far as my matchups. So I guess I’ll be just as surprised as you are when we find out, which in a way, I guess, is fun – all the anticipation. In all honesty, I just want to continue to compete with the highs.”

The coronavirus outbreak has altered fighters’ daily training regiments, but Dariush is using it as an opportunity to recover from nagging injuries that he’s ignored over the past few years.

“Coronavirus has definitely been a pain, but I’m grateful that it’s only been a small inconvenience because I know a lot of other people have had much worse issues,” Dariush said. “Training has not been ideal, but I’m also recovering from many injuries. So in a way, it works with my schedule of rehab.

“I had some serious injuries that I was ignoring and just trying to push through, but now I see that was a big mistake and a great learning experience. Being healthy allows me to train at a higher level and train more in general. So with that being said, I think the thing I would attribute most to my improvement would be keeping myself healthier.”

Robert Whittaker vs. Darren Till in the works to headline UFC Dublin in August

The UFC’s return to Dublin after nearly five years has a main event, and it’s a big fight for the middleweight division.

The UFC’s return to Dublin after nearly five years has a main event, and it’s a big fight for the future of the middleweight division.

Former UFC champ [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] will fight for the first time since losing the belt in October when he meets [autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] in the headliner of UFC Dublin, which takes place Aug. 15 from 3Arena. Broadcast plans are still to be determined, but the card is likely to stream on ESPN+.

MMA Junkie verified with a person close to the situation that both sides have agreed to the matchup, but contracts have yet to be signed, as ESPN.com first reported. The person requested anonymity because the UFC has yet to make an official announcement.

Whittaker (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) hasn’t seen action since UFC 243, when he dropped the 185-pound belt to Israel Adesanya. He was scheduled to make a comeback at UFC 248 this month, but a still-unknown personal matter forced him to withdraw from a planned bout against Jared Cannonier. UFC president Dana White said he didn’t know how long Whittaker would be kept out, but apparently he’s ready to get back to work.

Looking to hand the former titleholder his second loss in a row will be Till (18-2-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC), the former welterweight title challenger who made a successful middleweight debut at UFC 244 in November when he beat Kelvin Gastelum by split decision. The Brit openly expressed his desire to be the main event in Dublin when the card was announced, and now he gets his wish.

Whittaker vs. Till is the first reported fight booking for UFC Dublin.

UFC 248 free fight: Israel Adesanya captures undisputed middleweight crown

Ahead of his return at UFC 248, relive Israel Adesanya’s title-winning knockout of Robert Whittaker at UFC 243.

[autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] always knew his moment would come, and when it did, he’d rise to the occasion.

That moment came at UFC 243 when the undefeated Kiwi, already the interim middleweight champion, faced UFC 185-pound champ [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] for the unified, undisputed middleweight crown at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia in October 2019.

Whittaker came out aggressively at the start of the fight as he looked to knock the super-calm former kickboxer out of his stride in the early exchanges. But as the round progressed Adesanya kept his cool and started to time the Australian’s attacks.

By the end of the opening round, Adesanya had taken charge, and put an exclamation point on proceedings with a perfectly-timed right-hand counter that dropped the defending champion in the final second of the round.

Adesanya was in complete control when the bout resumed for Round 2 and, although Whittaker persisted with his “walk forward, throw heavy” approach, Adesanya dipped and swerved his way out of range, then punished the Aussie with slick, sharp counters.

Eventually, those counter shots proved decisive as Adesanya lit up Whittaker with a brilliant right-left combination that sent the champion crashing to the canvas for a show-stealing, title-winning knockout.

Adesanya (18-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) returns to action on Saturday in the main event of UFC 248 in Las Vegas, when he takes on dangerous Cuban challenger Yoel Romero (13-4 MMA, 9-3 UFC). Ahead of that clash, relive the brilliance of “The Last Stylebender” in his win over Whittaker in the video above.

Report: Robert Whittaker out of UFC 248 fight against Jared Cannonier

UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has withdrawn from his UFC 248 bout against Jared Cannonier.

The UFC 248 lineup has apparently taken a hit.

Former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] has reportedly withdrawn from his UFC 248 bout against Jared Cannonier, per a Wednesday report from ESPN.

The reason for Whittaker’s withdrawal was not disclosed. It is unknown at this time if Cannonier (13-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) will remain on the card.

Whittaker (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) has not competed since losing his title to Israel Adesanya at UFC 243 in October. The second-round knockout loss snapped a nine-fight win streak dating back to 2014.

As for Cannonier, the Alaska-born fighter has been on a roll as of late. In his last three fights, Cannonier has finished David Branch, Anderson Silva, and Jack Hermansson by strikes in a combined 15:53 of fight time.

With the removal of Whittaker vs. Cannonier, the UFC 248 lineup now includes:

  • Champ Zhang Weili vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – for women’s strawweight title
  • Jared Cannonier vs. TBA
  • Danaa Batgerel vs. Guido Cannetti

Ex-champ Robert Whittaker returns, meets Jared Cannonier at UFC 248

Former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker has a dance partner for his return fight after losing the title.

Former middleweight champion [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] has a dance partner for his return fight after losing the title.

Whittaker (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) will fight [autotag]Jared Cannonier[/autotag] (13-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) at UFC 248 in March. UFC officials announced the new booking overnight following an initial report from The Saturday Telegraph.

UFC 248 takes place March 8 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims expected for ESPN and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.

[lawrence-related id=467317]

Whittaker won the interim middleweight title with a decision over Yoel Romero in July 2017. He later was promoted to undisputed titleholder. After 11 months, he fought Romero in a rematch and took a split call in a fight in which his belt wasn’t on the line because Romero missed weight.

After another lengthy absence of 16 months, Whittaker returned in August and was knocked out in the second round by Israel Adesanya in front of his home fans in Australia. Prior to that loss, he had nine straight wins and seven fight-night bonus awards.

Cannonier is less than two years removed from a rough patch that saw him drop three of four fights to Glover Teixeira, Jan Blachowicz and Dominick Reyes. But those bouts were at light heavyweight, and after the loss to Reyes in May 2018, he dropped to 185 pounds.

At middleweight the past 13 months, Cannonier has been on a tear with three straight knockouts. He stopped former two-division WSOF champ David Branch at UFC 230. At UFC 237, he took out longtime middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva. And in September, he upset Jack Hermansson in the UFC on ESPN+ 18 main event in Denmark.

With the addition, the UFC 248 lineup includes:

  • Champ Zhang Weili vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk – for women’s strawweight title
  • Li Jingliang vs. Neil Magny
  • Jared Cannonier vs. Robert Whittaker

Darren Till wants to be the UFC 246 co-main event against Robert Whittaker

Darren Till wants Robert Whittaker in the co-main event of the UFC 246 headliner between Conor McGregor and Donald Cerrone.

[autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] is eager for a quick turnaround, it seems, and he still has his eyes on former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag].

After the Conor McGregor vs. Donald Cerrone fight was announced for the UFC 246 main event on Jan. 18, Till posted on Instagram that he wants to fight in the co-main event.

“Surely they need a co-main event ?
@robwhittakermma let’s go!
#LowTopTing 🦍”

But what about London?

Till probably wants a piece of that McGregor pay-per-view pie, and who can blame him? Don’t think the English fans will be too pleased, though, considering Whittaker said he was game to face Till in London, and it was even his idea.

What could’ve been: 10 of the best booked UFC fights that never happened

Conor McGregor vs. Rafael dos Anjos, Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirer, Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, and more make the list.

There have been numerous highly anticipated UFC matchups that have fallen through over the years because of unfortunate circumstances, and they easily could’ve produced fireworks.

From championship fights, to rivalries, to intriguing stylistic pairings, here are 10 of the best scheduled matchups that never ended up happening.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson

[jwplayer o0fhTRLu-FLu19iir]

While it appears that another [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] fight booking is imminent at the time of this writing, let’s just hope the fifth time is the charm.

These two were scheduled to fight on four other occasions, but a series of unfortunate circumstances and injuries has resulted in it never happening. The first booking was during The Ultimate Fighter Finale card on Dec. 11, 2015, when Nurmagomedov was forced out due to injury and replaced by Edson Barboza. Ferguson submitted Barboza in the second round via D’Arce choke, earning both “Performance” and “Fight of the Night” bonuses.

They were then scheduled to fight at UFC on FOX 19 on April 16, 2016, but this time it was Ferguson who pulled out. Ferguson was replaced by newcomer Darrell Horcher, whom Nurmagomedov battered before earning a second-round TKO win.

Then, an interim lightweight championship fight was scheduled to take place at UFC 209 on March 4, 2017, but the fight was canceled due to Nurmagomedov falling ill from a bad weight cut.

Finally, the two were set to meet a fourth time. At UFC 223 in April 2018, Nurmagomedov and then-interim champ Ferguson were going to fight for the undisputed lightweight title. But in a freak accident, Ferguson tripped over a wire and blew out his knee. Max Holloway stepped in briefly, but the New York State Athletic Commission deemed Holloway unfit to compete due to a severe weight cut. Al Iaquinta, who was scheduled to face Paul Felder on the same night, stepped in for the massive opportunity but was dominated by Nurmagomedov in a five-round battle.

Nurmagomedov finally realized his dream of becoming the UFC lightweight champ, and here’s hoping the fight with Ferguson will finally come to fruition in early 2020 as expected.

Darren Till accepts Robert Whittaker’s challenge for UFC London

Darren Till has accepted Robert Whittaker’s callout for a London showdown.

[autotag]Darren Till[/autotag] has responded to former UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag]’s callout.

Whittaker initially called for a UFC London headliner vs. Till in a recent interview with “The Daily Telegraph,” and former welterweight title challenger Till now says he welcomes the matchup.

And rather than simply accept the booking, Till also took to Twitter to warn Whittaker that he’s not ready for a fight with him.

In his last outing, Whittaker (20-5 MMA, 11-3 UFC) lost his middleweight title to Israel Adesanya via second-round TKO at October’s UFC 243. It was Whittaker’s first loss in over five years, and his first ever at 185 pounds.

Till (18-2-1 MMA, 6-2-1 UFC), on the other hand, successfully snapped a two-fight losing skid in his most recent outing, defeating former interim middleweight title challenger Kelvin Gastelum via split decision at UFC 244 earlier this mont.

No date has been announced for the UFC’s next trip to London, but it is projected to take place in the first quarter of 2020, as the promotion has done for the past several years.
