LSU men’s basketball rolls against Loyola (New Orleans) in exhibition win

The Tigers had no issues against Loyola in their exhibition to open the season.

It was a blowout win for the LSU men’s basketball team in its preseason scrimmage against NAIA Loyola (New Orleans) on Tuesday night. The Tigers won 110-48 as they seek to push for an NCAA tournament berth in Matt McMahon’s third season.

Newcomers shined in the win, with transfer guards [autotag]Cam Carter[/autotag] and [autotag]Jordan Sears[/autotag], both starters, leading the team with 21 points and 16 points, respectively. LSU split minutes fairly evenly, resulting in seven total players scoring in double figures.

Freshman [autotag]Robert Miller III[/autotag] and [autotag]Daimion Collins[/autotag], who missed most of last season due to injury, led the team with nine rebounds apiece.

“Good way to start the exhibition season here,” McMahon said in a release. “From an offensive standpoint I liked it when we were sharing the basketball, balls popping around, guys stepping up knocking down, a lot of good looks from behind the three-point line. I thought in the first half we were able to be disruptive on the defensive end. Think you saw the experience of Jordan Sears, Dji Bailey, and Cam Carter. We talked about it in media yesterday. Over 7,000 minutes of college experience for those three guys. Happy to see them get their first game under their belts in the PMAC.”

It was an impressive performance for the Tigers offense, which shot 55.7% in the game and was aggressive from three-point range, connecting on 18 of 37 attempts.

The defense also dominated, holding Loyola under 30% shooting while forcing 19 turnovers. Those turnovers resulted in 25 points going the other way for LSU.

“I think we were able to make them uncomfortable in the first half with the pressure,” McMahon said. “They do a nice job executing offensively and we were able to get them out of their spots. And what we ended up doing was forcing a lot of contested jump shots on the perimeter. We did a solid job on the defensive glass which enabled us to get out in transition and take advantage of our speed and quickness. I thought that was all activated by the defensive pressure on the ball.”

It was a nice showing for the Tigers, who were also without [autotag]Derek Fountain[/autotag] and [autotag]Tyrell Ward[/autotag] for precautionary reasons, as well as transfer [autotag]Noah Boyde[/autotag], who continues to recover from a torn ACL last December.

McMahon’s squad will begin the regular season against ULM next Wednesday.

Pair of LSU men’s basketball commits sign National Letters of Intent

The college basketball early signing period began Wednesday, and the Tigers quickly locked up both 2024 commits.

The college basketball early signing period began on Wednesday, and LSU inked National Letters of Intent from both of their current 2024 commits, [autotag]Robert Miller III[/autotag] and [autotag]Curtis Givens III[/autotag].

Miller, a Pasadena, Texas, native, and Givens — who hails from powerhouse Montverde Academy in Florida — ranks as the No. 60 and 61 players in the 2024 class, respectively, per the 247Sports Composite.

Coach [autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] has looked more toward the transfer portal for roster building than high school recruiting. He signed just two high school players in the 2023 class, and Miller and Givens are the only players currently pledged for 2024.

However, LSU remains in the mix for several other players as it looks to improve on a class that currently ranks 28th in the nation.

The early signing period will last for one week, closing next Wednesday. Players will have the opportunity to sign again during the regular period, which begins April 17 and ends May 15.

Top 50 2024 small forward is down to four schools

One of the best basketball players in the country for the class of 2024 has trimmed his list of potential schools down to four.

One of the best basketball players in the country for the class of 2024 has trimmed his list of potential schools down to four. The LSU Tigers made the cut.

[autotag]Rakease Passmore[/autotag] is a 6-foot-5, 180-pound, four-star small forward who is ranked as one of the top 50 players in the country for the 2024 recruiting class. He trimmed his final list of schools to four schools: LSU, Arkansas, Kansas and Oklahoma. Passmore is from Palatka, Florida, but he plays at Combine Academy in Asheville, North Carolina.

[autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] got his first commitment for the 2024 class on September 22nd as four-star power forward [autotag]Robert Miller III[/autotag] committed to the Tigers. Miller is another guy that is ranked in the top 50 nationally.

All of a sudden, LSU has gone from having zero commitments for the class to having possibly two guys in the top 50 nationally committing to playing in the Bayou. Hopefully, McMahon can get the job done.

NEW: LSU basketball lands 2024 four-star power forward

Matt McMahon has landed the first commitment of the 2024 class for LSU basketball.

[autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] has landed the first commitment of the 2024 class for LSU basketball. The Tigers got a commitment from four-star power forward [autotag]Robert Miller III[/autotag].

Miller is a 6-foot-10, 225-pound, four-star power forward from Pasadena, Texas, where he plays for Pasadena Memorial. The Pasadena Memorial Mavericks finished the 2022 season 23-12 with a loss to Summer Creek in the 6A playoffs.

Miller III is the first commitment for the 2024 recruiting class. He is a Top-50 player and is ranked as the No. 2 player from the state of Texas and the No. 7 power forward in the country. Hopefully, this will start a run on commitments for the class.

LSU starts the 2023 season on Nov. 6 against Mississippi Valley State at home. The Tigers will be looking to improve after a 14-19 record in their first season under McMahon. After going 2-16 in conference play, there is nowhere to go but up this winter.

Elite 2024 PF Robert Miller III to visit Alabama in late September

2024 power forward Robert Miller III is scheduled to take an official visit to Alabama from Sept. 22-24.

Class of 2024 power forward Robert Miller III is scheduled to take official visits to three schools in September. Miller III will make trips to LSU (Sept. 8-10), Alabama (Sept. 22-24), and Texas (Sept. 29-Oct. 1).

Miller III’s father, Robert Miller II, played football at LSU. However, Texas is the favorite to land Miller III, according to On3’s RPM.

Alabama could be on the outside looking in at this point in time but could make up some ground with Miller III’s official visit at the end of September.

Miller III has a similar skill set to former Alabama power forward Noah Clowney. Miller III is listed at 6-foot-10, 225 pounds. Clowney was listed at 6-foot-9, 205 pounds coming out of high school.

The Alabama coaching staff has sold Miller III on playing a similar role to Clowney if he decides to commit to the Crimson Tide.

2024 PF Robert Miller III lists Alabama in top 6

2024 power forward Robert Miller III released his top-six schools on Monday. Alabama was listed as a finalist.

The Alabama men’s basketball program is firmly in the mix to land 2024 power forward Robert Miller III. He released his top-six schools on Monday and Alabama was listed as a finalist.

Miller III plays for Pasadena Memorial High School in Pasadena, Texas. As a junior, he averaged 13.6 points per game, 9.3 rebounds per game, 1.6 assists per game, and 6.0 blocks per game.

Miller III is listed at 6-foot-10 and 225 pounds. In Alabama’s system, he could play either power forward or center given his length and athleticism. Alabama head coach Nate Oats likes to have a shot blocker in every recruiting cycle. He could be that guy in the 2024 recruiting class.

Sooners make top six for elite 2024 basketball prospect

It’s been a while since an athletic, tall, skilled big man has called Norman home and he’d be a great compliment to some of the young guys already on campus.

It’s not just the Oklahoma football program that is in the midst of some big-time recruiting battles. The Oklahoma basketball program, led by Porter Moser, is in a few of its own.

One of those is for top 50 power forward Robert Miller III from Houston, Texas.

Miller released his top six, with the Sooners included alongside the Texas Longhorns, Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, Arkansas Razorbacks, and Colorado Buffaloes. There’s no doubt everywhere you look, the Texas Longhorns seem to be the prohibitive favorite and the team to beat.

On3 has them with a 93.1% chance to land the prospect, and with the success the program has had lately, they’ll be tough to beat.

But if Moser can pull it off, Miller would be a player they just haven’t had in the program in a long time.

Robert Miller III has all the tools making his upside fascinating. He stands every bit of 6’9”/6’10” with long arms and fluid movements. He has a smooth shooting stroke with catch and shoot ability when his feet are set from beyond the arc. Miller is a fluid athlete with some explosive pop. He runs and moves, both laterally and vertically, very well. He can put it on the floor for 2-3 dribbles and has a developing mid-post game with a nice mid-range pull-up game. He needs to continue adding a strength to his core and base. Continue working on his footwork and the finer nuances of how he scores his baskets. He can face the basket in the half-court and finish in transition at the rim. Miller is still raw, he is still young and learning his spots. He will need to continue focusing on rebounding and on defense. The flashes are very apparent here, and the patience could be well worth the wait. – On3’s Jamie Shaw

It’s been a while since an athletic, tall, skilled big man has called Norman home, and he’d be a great compliment to some of the young guys already on campus.

As mentioned, the defense still needs work, but he’s a pretty good shot blocker. We know if you don’t play defense, Moser has a hard time finding you minutes on the court.

In the end, winning a player in Texas’ backyard is going to be tough but could be helped out if the Sooners can find themselves in the NCAA Tournament this season.

Will Miller wait that long to commit? That’s to be determined.

LSU makes the final 6 for 2024 four-star power forward

The Tigers have made the final six for Robert Miller III.

[autotag]Matt McMahon[/autotag] is working on a really strong recruiting class for 2024. After making the final eight for a four-star small forward earlier, the Tigers have now made the final six for a four-star power forward from Houston.

[autotag]Robert Miller III[/autotag] is a 6-foot-10, 225-pound, four-star power forward that is ranked as high as the No. 33 overall prospect in the country by On3. He plays for Pasadena Memorial High School. The Pasadena Memorial Mustangs finished the 2022 season 23-12 with a loss to Summer Creek in the 6A Region 3 and 4 tournament.

LSU made the final six list along with Alabama, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado and Oklahoma. So, Miller is down to five SEC schools and Colorado. LSU currently does not have any commitments for the class of 2024 but they do have multiple offers to top-ranked players.

There are no crystal ball projections for Miller at this time but Texas is a 93% favorite to land him per On3.
