5 questions we’re asking as the Sooners open Big 12 play vs West Virginia

Five questions we’re asking as the Oklahoma Sooners focus their attention on West Virginia.

Big 12 football is officially a go for the Oklahoma Sooners. They navigated a less than stellar non-conference slate with an escape of Tulane, a throttling of Western Carolina and tough rivalry win against long-time foe Nebraska. They’ll start their conference title defense against the Mountaineers of West Virginia under the lights on Saturday night.

Heading into the game, it’s been noted that Oklahoma hasn’t shown themselves to be worthy of the preseason hype as national champions. Whether you agree or disagree, it means nothing as the games now are tough every week. OU has plenty of time to mold themselves into the team that many think can compete against the likes of Georgia and Alabama for the national title. Each game presents their own set of problems and questions.

As the Sooners narrow their focus in on West Virginia, let’s take a look at the five questions we will be asking.

3 Players to watch on offense for Oklahoma vs. Western Carolina

As the Oklahoma Sooners get set to take on the Western Carolina Catamounts, here are three players to watch on offense for OU.

After a week of self-reflection, the day has arrived. Oklahoma will have its chance to put its narrow win and shaky performance firmly behind them. They’ll lace up their cleats, strap up their helmets and pads to take on FCS Western Carolina University. The offense has some notable guys that we’ll be taking a look at. They played well in the first half minus some inconsistent plays from their leader in Spencer Rattler and some struggles on the offensive line to generate real push in the run game. Here are our players to watch in game two:

Andrew Raym, C

As previously mentioned, the Sooners run game struggled badly. Sure, Kennedy Brooks broke off a long run of 32 yards.  Excluding that his stats check out to 13 carries for 55 yards against Tulane. OU cannot struggle two weeks in a row with Group of Five or FCS level competition running the ball.

Enter Andrew Raym.

Highly recruited out of high school to be the heir apparent to former Sooner turned Kansas City Chief Creed Humphrey, Raym sat out most of the game last week as he tested positive for COVID-19 the week before. Largely due to missed practice time, he played sparingly but should be full tilt and should usurp transfer Robert Congel this week for snaps. His strength and athleticism up the middle are great assets to getting this run game going.

Offensive keys vs Tulane for the Oklahoma Sooners

Offensive keys to the game for the Oklahoma Sooners in their week one matchup with the Tulane Green Wave.

It’s time.

No more speculation, no more reports about training camp battles and who could conceivably win this spot or that spot. We can all shift our attention on a week to week basis about the opponents in front of Oklahoma.

Another journey to try and scale the proverbial college football mountain begins in less than 24 hours.

Offensively, Oklahoma is lead by one of the presumptive Heisman favorites in QB Spencer Rattler. His development is a significant part of Oklahoma realizing the lofty expectations headed into this season.

Rattler’s great and he’ll elevate the Sooners, but he can’t do it all on his own. Here are the offensive keys as they start the game against what is likely to be a very spirited Tulane team.

Top storylines as the Oklahoma Sooners get set to face the Tulane

As the Sooners get set to kickoff the 2021 season with their matchup vs Tulane, what are the top five storylines heading into week 1.

Less than 24 hours from now, the Oklahoma Sooners will open the season against the Tulane Green Wave.

It sure feels good to type those words. Tomorrow, starting at 11:00 a.m. CST, the Oklahoma Sooners will finally begin their journey toward the national title.

As they get set to host Tulane’s home game, the Sooners will defer choice of uniform to the Green Wave creating the possibility the Sooners will be on their road whites on Saturday.

As “talking season” as Lincoln Riley likes to call it, comes to a close, let’s take a look at the top storylines heading into week one.

Oklahoma lands Arizona transfer OL Robert Congel

After getting former five-star offensive tackle Wanya Morris from Tennessee, Oklahoma is adding another offensive line transfer in Robert Congel from Arizona.

Just a handful of days after landing former five-star offensive tackle Wanya Morris from Tennessee, Oklahoma is adding another offensive line transfer in Robert Congel from Arizona.

Congel is listed at 6-foot-3, 315 lbs. from Englewood, Colorado. He attended high shcool at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Congel initially enrolled at Texas A&M before starting for two seasons at Arizona. He’s seen action at left guard, right guard and center including starting at right guard for the Wildcats in 2020.

Congel joins Morris and former UCLA lineman Chris Murray as a trio of strong contributors that transferred in from other programs. With the departure of both Creed Humphrey and Adrian Ealy to the NFL Draft, these transfer portal pickups will serve Oklahoma well in terms of offensive line depth.

Improving in the trenches will be a major priority for the Sooners entering 2021. A lack of consistency along the offensive line was the key limiting factor for Oklahoma’s offense for much of 2020.
