Panthers WR Robbie Anderson moves on from past comments about Baker Mayfield

Here’s why Panthers WR Robby Anderson, who has zero beef with Baker Mayfield, is now Panthers WR Robbie Anderson.

Back in April, Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson (Robby Anderson, at the time) made it clear that he wasn’t interested in having quarterback Baker Mayfield (Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, at the time) on his team. But now that he is indeed on his team, has the air been cleared?

According to Anderson, it didn’t have to be.

The seventh-year receiver spoke with reporters on Friday following the third installment of training camp practice. When asked by Joseph Person of The Athletic if he felt he had to patch things up with Mayfield, Anderson stated that there was no need.

“Nah,” he said. “That’s, like, kinda water under the bridge.”

Per usual, Anderson was short and sweet with his answer.

But since the media had him, he was also asked about that aforementioned name change. Why go from “Robby” to “Robbie?”

Well, on top of just liking how it looks, he sees it as a rebirth of sorts.

“Yeah, you could say that in a sense,” he told team beat writer Sheena Quick. “That’s how I used to spell it, though, when I was younger. Then I switched it to the ‘y.’ But I kinda like how it look on paper better with the ‘ie.’ And when I had ‘ie,’ I had the No. 3, too. Like, throwback, know what I’m sayin’?”

Anderson, of course, also switched uniform numbers this offseason—dumping his No. 11 for that throwback 3.

So maybe Mayfield and Anderson don’t have to talk anything out considering it was Robby, not Robbie, that resented the trade.

Ravens QB Lamar Jackson has throwing session with multiple NFL WRs

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson had a throwing session with a few NFL wide receivers

The Baltimore Ravens are banking on a big fifth-year from quarterback Lamar Jackson in 2022. He has shown that he is one of the most talented players in the league, and his fantastic work ethic is a major reason for his success at the professional level.

Jackson has been working hard all offseason in order to continue to get better on the field. He recently got a throwing session in with a few NFL wide receivers, including current Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson as well as former Baltimore pass catcher Willie Snead IV, who is currently still a free agent.

Warning: NSFW music

Throughout the video, Jackson shows off his arm strength and deep ball accuracy, something that Baltimore could look to show off more in 2022.

Anderson is currently gearing up for his third season in Carolina after spending the first four years of his NFL career with the New York Jets. Snead played with the Ravens from 2018-2020, accumulating 126 catches for 1,422 yards and nine touchdowns.

Winners and losers from Panthers’ trade for QB Baker Mayfield

The winners and losers of Wednesday’s Baker Mayfield trade go even beyond the Panthers organization itself.

On Wednesday, the Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns finally came together on a deal for quarterback Baker Mayfield. And, just like most deals, it’ll cause a ripple effect on its related parties.

So, here’s who will be facing some change—both positive and negative—as a result of the trade.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson: ‘I don’t have an issue’ with Baker Mayfield

We were waiting with bated breath on Robbie Anderson’s reaction to the Panthers’ trade for Baker Mayfield. Well, we got it.

A lot of folks have had a lot of things to say about the Carolina Panthers and Baker Mayfield—even before Wednesday’s trade came to be. But there was one person in particular that had a few interesting comments about the marriage not too far back.

That person, of course, is Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson.

In April, the seventh-year wideout publicly displayed his displeasure for such an acquisition. Not only did he reply with a resounding “Nooooo” to an Instagram post teasing Mayfield’s move to Carolina, but he proceeded to promptly double down soon after.

Well, Anderson went back to social media today to clear up his stance on Mayfield. And as he said in mandatory minicamp, he was only trying to be a good teammate to his projected starting quarterback at the time—Sam Darnold.

Now, Anderson will have another quarterback to defend this upcoming season—whether he really likes him or not.

Browns likely wouldn’t swap QBs with Panthers in trade involving Baker Mayfield

Unlike Dell and Sonya Curry, the Panthers and Browns probably won’t be down for a good old fashioned swap.

Things have gotten messy for the Cleveland Browns at the quarterback position, and that’s even if you exclude the mounting allegations of sexual misconduct against Deshaun Watson. But when it comes solely to Baker Mayfield, can they make a clean break?

According to Mary Kay Cabot, probably not.

A scenario that could make plenty of sense for both the Browns and the Carolina Panthers is a quarterback-for-quarterback swap—specifically Mayfield for Sam Darnold. Both have just about worn out their welcomes,  both are set to earn $18.8 million for the 2022 campaign and both teams would be better off with the other guy.

Cabot’s report for Cleveland.com, however, isn’t putting much stock into that outcome. On Wednesday evening, the Browns beat writer quoted a league source that stated he’s “confident it’s not happening.”

Shucks.

What could be happening, though, is a trade that sends another Panthers player to Cleveland. And, ironically enough, it could be receiver Robbie Anderson.

In a separate nugget, Josina Anderson of CBS Sports mentioned on Tuesday that the 29-year-old wideout could be involved in a move for Mayfield. Hmmm . . .

Anderson, of course, previously expressed his disapproval for a pairing with the former No. 1 overall pick in a couple of Instagram replies back in April. And although he cleared that up on Wednesday, saying he was just showing support for his current quarterback in Darnold, he wouldn’t have to play with him anyway if such a deal went down.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson on retirement tweet: ‘I’m here, ain’t I?’

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson said his cryptic tweet about retirement wasn’t really that serious.

This past Saturday, Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson caused a bit of a stir with a tweet—one that, perhaps, teased an early retirement. And even though the post was deleted rather promptly, how serious was it?

According to Anderson himself, it wasn’t.

After the team’s second outing of mandatory minicamp on Wednesday, the 29-year-old fielded questions from reporters. So, naturally, he was peppered with inquiries into his Twitter activity—to which he said wasn’t a big deal.

“I was just, ya know, thinkin’ out loud,” he said. “Just thinkin’ out loud. But I wasn’t, like, really that serious, for real.”

Anderson, who later stated that “personal things” inspired him to think (or type) out loud, was then asked if he wants to play in 2022 and if he wants to be with the Panthers. To that, he had a simple answer.

“I’m here, ain’t I?” he said. “So that’s a tell-tale.”

Luckily, we’d get a little more out of Robbie, who was also asked about his very public disapproval of the team potentially acquiring Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield. Anderson claimed he was just trying to show his support for his current passer in Sam Darnold.

“Just tryna to be a good teammate to my quarterback,” he stated of his thought process behind his negative Instagram replies regarding Mayfield. “That’s it. Just tryna defend the guy who is my quarterback, in that sense.”

As we’ve said before—whether you like him or not, Robbie always keeps it a buck.

4-Down Territory: News of the day, June 15, 2022

What’s happening around the NFL today? Check out the top stories from June 15.

What’s happening around the NFL today?

It’s mid-June, so not as much as we’d like. Still, there’s some minicamp drama, trade rumors, plus Odell speculation.

Check out the top NFL stories below.

Rumor: Robbie Anderson could be targeted by Browns in Baker Mayfield trade

Could the Browns add a #2 receiver as a part of trading away Baker Mayfield? An interesting thought especially given Anderson’s past tweets:

Based on reports, the Cleveland Browns could finally have a resolution to their relationship with QB Baker Mayfield. While nothing is certain, rumors persist that the Carolina Panthers could end up finalizing a trade for the Browns former starter.

The Panthers traded for Sam Darnold last year but saw him struggle greatly. They added Matt Corral in the 2022 NFL draft but few believe he is ready to compete for the starter job right away. With Matt Rhule entering his third season, winning is a priority and Mayfield would give them the best chance.

The holdup, since the NFL draft, has reportedly been around his contract. What had not been discussed is what specific compensation Cleveland would receive in return.

No matter what the trade is, Carolina WR Robbie Anderson made it clear that he didn’t want to play with Mayfield. Earlier this week, Anderson tweeted and then deleted that he was considering retiring.

Now, Josina Anderson mentioned Anderson as a possible candidate to join the Browns. Josina Anderson talks about Deshaun Watson and Mayfield below but mentions Robby Anderson near the end of this video:

A six-year pro, Anderson had his best season in Carolina in 2020 with 1,096 yards after three straight years with the New York Jets where he averaged 14.9 or more yards per reception. If traded, his contract would be reasonable for one season but jumps significantly in 2023.

As negotiations continue, it will be interesting if Cleveland is interested in Anderson more than draft capital in return for Mayfield.

A lot of smoke surrounding the Browns and Panthers at this point but there are no reports that a deal is imminent or that Anderson is likely to be involved if a deal is consummated.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson reports for mandatory minicamp

Despite tweeting about retirement on Saturday, Panthers WR Robbie Anderson is present and geared up for this week’s mandatory minicamp.

Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson caused a teeny-tiny stir over the past few weeks.

First, he wasn’t present for voluntary organized team activities at the end of May. But, the keyword there is “voluntary,” so no biggie.

Then on Saturday, he posted a cryptic tweet teasing an early retirement. That, however, was deleted not too long after and didn’t ultimately seem like much.

Well, neither of those things mattered—as the 29-year-old was present on Monday for the start of mandatory minicamp. Plus, he seemed pretty geeked about it . . .

Despite the aforementioned OTA absence and tweet, Anderson could very well be coming into his seventh NFL campaign with a bit of motivation. Like, have you seen the uniform number change? That’s a twist.

Most importantly, though, Anderson is coming off the worst season of his pro tenure. 2021 marked the first year of his career in which averaged below 10.0 yards per reception (9.8). That, of course, was particularly worrisome given his ability as a dangerous downfield threat.

Regardless, that’s the past and this is the present. And Anderson is presently present for the week.

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson contemplating retirement?

Panthers WR Robbie Anderson may have hinted at an early retirement in a tweet on Saturday.

After the dismal season Carolina Panthers wideout Robbie Anderson had in 2021, you’d assume he’d be itching to get back on the field as soon as possible. But, uh, he may not have an itch at all.

On Saturday, the 29-year-old posted an eyebrow-raising tweet—perhaps about his future in the game of football. And although Anderson is known to hit the app quite a bit (and is certainly no stranger to the occasional cryptic message or two), we may have to wonder if this is it for him . . .

Anderson is fresh off the worst campaign of his six-year career. He posted lows in receiving yards (519), yards per reception (9.8) and catch rate (48.2 percent) after signing a two-year extension last summer.

Besides his age, this is particularly curious given the remainder of that lucrative contract as well as his recent change in uniform number. But an athlete—especially in this sport—can certainly change course about their path.
