WATCH: Rob Gronkowski is ineligible to play this NFL season

Perhaps this will slow the murmurings and the “Will he or won’t he?” questioning for a few months — Rob Gronkowski is now ineligible to play this NFL season.

Perhaps this will slow the murmurings and the “Will he or won’t he?” questioning for a few months — Rob Gronkowski is now ineligible to play this NFL season.

The deadline for players on the reserve list to apply for reinstatement was 4 p.m. Eastern time Saturday, the final business day before Week 13 kickoff.

While that cutoff definitely means Gronk won’t be able to step out on the field and help the Patriots this season, he has left the door open for a return beyond this year and is eligible to come out of retirement and play again following the Super Bowl.

“I wouldn’t say ‘never coming back,’” Gronkowski said in November. “I’m 30 years old. I’m young. I still stay fit, still, watch the game whenever I can still enjoy it. I’m feeling good, but you know, one year off could possibly be the case. Or maybe two years off, man. It’s always an option in the back of my head.”

Rob Gronkowski officially isn’t returning to Patriots in 2019

The comeback chatter can end — for now.

Rob Gronkowski will not return to the New England Patriots or the NFL in 2019. He had until 4 p.m. on Saturday to apply for reinstatement from the reserve list, but he elected not to put together a bid to return.

Gronkowski teased the idea of returning for 2019, but eventually began to rule out the possibility as the deadline grew near. He seemed only to engage the chatter surrounding a potential return when it benefited his post-football business endeavors. When he was being candid, it became clearer he wasn’t ready to return this season. He said it outright before Week 12 games on the FOX Sports broadcast, where he is an NFL analyst.

Gronkowski’s work as an NFL analyst hasn’t been exclusively about praising the Patriots. He had strong feelings about New England’s negative attitude after a Week 11 win over the Philadelphia Eagles.

“(Tom Brady) is so frustrated, too. It’s like, ‘Yo, you guys are 9-1.’ That’s one part I don’t miss about being there. Hand down. I’m not going to lie. I don’t miss that,” Gronkowski said on air before Sunday’s Week 12 games began. “They’re frustrated. They’re 9-1. They win a game against Philly last week. We lost to them two years ago in the Super Bowl. They should be happy. Instead, you’re sitting there Sunday night thinking, ‘What did I do wrong?’ No, that’s not the feeling you should be having. But you won the game. Enjoy it. Go out next week, and build off it.”

Combining those remarks with some of his comments about injuries and concussions, it’s probably the right choice for Gronk to enjoy life after football.

Twitter has field day with Rob Gronkowski’s outfit on FOX

Gronk’s turtleneck brings out some hilarious feedback on Twitter.

Rob Gronkowski is the ultimate source of entertainment.

The former New England Patriots tight end and current FOX Sports analyst made some noise on Sunday night with his turtleneck. He confidently wore the outfit, and Twitter had an absolute field day with it.

NFL fans had so many jokes for Rob Gronkowski’s halftime show outfit

That turtleneck.

By now, it’s beyond clear that Rob Gronkowski won’t return to the NFL this season. Gronk has said that he’s staying retired. He’s criticized the Patriots’ negativity. He’s also settled into a super serious role as an NFL broadcaster on Fox.

During Sunday’s Fox broadcast of the Patriots and Cowboys, Gronk was part of the halftime report alongside the usual crew of Curt Menefee, Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Michael Strahan and Tony Gonzalez. The former Patriots tight end tried to dress the part of a television analyst, but what he settled on had a distinct Bond-villain vibe to it.

He traded in the suit and tie for a turtleneck-jacket deal, and oh man, that turtleneck wasn’t fooling anyone. Gronk will always be Gronk, and NFL fans reacted to the look with plenty of jokes.

Rob Gronkowski reveals moment he knew Jimmy Garoppolo would be elite

Two of the best teams in the NFL right now are led by Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Two of the best teams in the NFL right now are led by Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Brady and the New England Patriots are 9-1 through the first 11 weeks of the season, while Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers carry the same record. Garoppolo spent his first three seasons behind Brady in New England and was immediately viewed as a franchise quarterback with the 49ers.

He learned from some of the greatest football minds in the game and it’s translating into his career outside of New England. FOX Sports analyst and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski revealed the moment that he knew Garoppolo would be special.

Gronk’s hunch was right.

Rob Gronkowski scolds Tom Brady, Patriots for negativity: ‘They should be happy’

“He’s so frustrated, too. It’s like, ‘Yo, you guys are 9-1.’ That’s one part I don’t miss about being there

Rob Gronkowski saw Tom Brady’s reaction to the New England Patriots’ win over the Philadelphia Eagles last week. And in that moment, Gronk didn’t miss playing for the Patriots.

Brady moped his way through a short postgame press conference after Week 11 action, and then the quarterback expressed deeper frustrations in a radio interview on WEEI on Monday. Gronk, who is serving as an NFL analyst for FOX, couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“He’s so frustrated, too. It’s like, ‘Yo, you guys are 9-1.’ That’s one part I don’t miss about being there. Hand down. I’m not going to lie. I don’t miss that,” Gronkowski said on air on Sunday before Week 12. Enjoy it. Go out next week, and build off it,”

Bill Belichick is the king of skipping celebrations. He doesn’t reward his team for big wins, and doesn’t get too low after big losses (see: “On to Cincinnati”). It seems Brady bears the burden of harsh self-criticism — he admitted earlier this year that he’s always frustrated during the football season. And to be fair to the Patriots, that negativity — or, at least, that inclination to self criticize — has worked for New England. They’ve won six Super Bowls under Brady and Belichick.

But at times, that recipe didn’t always work for Gronk, who reportedly fatigued on Belichick’s tough approach. At the end of Gronkowski’s career, he seemed to grow tired of the negativity and the tight end’s relationship with his coach grew strained. Perhaps that’s part of why Gronk again ruled out a return from retirement on Sunday.

“No, I’m not coming back,” he said.

Rob Gronkowski put on a show at halftime of the Lakers game.

Patriots fans have been anxiously waiting for retired tight end Rob Gronkowski to announce his return to football with the team ahead of the playoffs, but Gronk announced this week that he has other plans. Instead of potentially suiting up for Super Bowl LIV in Miami, Gronkowski will be hosting a music festival on South Beach. He told ESPN on Tuesday that he’s still not ruling out an eventual return to football, but taking one or two years off “could possibly be the case.”

On Tuesday night, Gronk was in Los Angeles for the Thunder-Lakers game, and the joined tennis icon Venus Williams and James Corden for a halftime performance with the Laker girls.
