UFC 292 adds Rob Font vs. Song Yadong to Boston lineup

Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley won’t be the only top bantamweights competing at UFC 292, as Rob Font vs. Song Yadong is set.

[autotag]Aljamain Sterling[/autotag] and [autotag]Sean O’Malley[/autotag] won’t be the only top bantamweights competing at UFC 292.

Before the 135-pound title fight takes place, contenders [autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] and [autotag]Song Yadong[/autotag] will square off in a three-round bout Aug. 19 at TD Garden in Boston.

Two people with knowledge of the booking recently informed MMA Junkie of the matchup but asked to remain anonymous. Contracts have not yet been signed but are expected to be in the coming days.

The promotion also officially announced the bout Wednesday evening. Eurosport NL was first to reported the targeted bout.

One of the faces of the New England Cartel, Massachusetts’ Font (20-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) will have a homecoming of sorts as he competes at TD Garden for the third time. Following back-to-back losses to Jose Aldo and Marlon Vera, Font bounced back with a brutal TKO victory over Adrian Yanez at UFC 287 in April.

Yadong (20-7-1 MMA, 9-2-1 UFC) most recently competed in a five-round bout April 29 at UFC Fight Night 223 when he finished Ricky Simon with punches early in Round 5. Yadong has won four of his most recent five bouts, with the only loss a TKO due to a laceration against Cory Sandhagen.

With the addition, the UFC 292 lineup includes:

  • Champion Aljamain Sterling vs. Sean O’Malley – for bantamweight title
  • Champion Zhang Weili vs. Amanda Lemos – for women’s strawweight title
  • Henry Cejudo vs. Marlon Vera
  • Rob Font vs. Song Yadong
  • Ian Garry vs. Geoff Neal
  • Brad Tavares vs. Chris Weidman
  • Mario Bautista vs. Cody Garbrandt
  • Gerald Meerschaert vs. Andre Petroski
  • Maryna Moroz vs. Karine Silva
  • Andrea Lee vs. Natalia Silva
  • Gregory Rodrigues vs. Denis Tiuliulin

Rob Font angles to introduce Deiveson Figueiredo to UFC bantamweight division

Following his UFC 287 win, Rob Font hopes for a fight against former flyweight king Deiveson Figueiredo, who is moving up in weight.

MIAMI – [autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] isn’t one to usually call his shots. But when he looks at the puzzle of the bantamweight division and where he fits after his UFC 287 win, an arriving contender comes to mind as a viable next matchup.

“I would love to do ‘Figgy’ vs. Font, man. ([autotag]Deiveson Figueiredo[/autotag]), I’d love to introduce him to the 135 division,” Font told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a post-fight news conference Saturday at Kaseya Center. “I think that’d be a fun fight. I think I like fighting big names. I definitely don’t want to fight backward, but I think me and him could definitely be a great fight. …

“He’s a former champ. He’s exciting. I know he’s going to talk a lot of sh*t. I think it’d be a great, entertaining type of fight, and I think I need another big name like that.”

Font (20-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) snapped a two-fight skid Saturday when he knocked out Adrian Yanez (16-4 MMA, 5-1 UFC) midway through Round 1 of their bantamweight fight on the pay-per-view main card. Font said the win, his first since May 2021, was a much-needed reminder to the division that he’s still a top contender.

“I think I had something to prove to myself,” Font said. “Obviously I needed that for myself. I needed to remind myself that I’m still here. I’m still that guy. If I get going on anybody, that’s what’s going to happen to everybody.”

Should he get what he asked for, Font will be Figueiredo’s first UFC opponent at bantamweight. Figueiredo is a former UFC flyweight champion, who recently completed a tetralogy with current titleholder Brandon Moreno and immediately announced the move up.

UFC 287 results: Rob Font blasts Adrian Yanez for head-bouncing TKO

Rob Font vs. Adrian Yanez, which many predicted would be “Fight of the Night” at UFC 287, lived up to the hype for as long as it lasted.

[autotag]Rob Font[/autotag] made the most of an important moment Saturday when he returned to the win column with a first-round knockout of [autotag]Adrian Yanez[/autotag] at UFC 287 in Miami.

In the featured pay-per-view main card slot, Font (20-6 MMA, 10-5 UFC) finished Yanez (16-4 MMA, 5-1 UFC) with punches at 2:57 of Round 1.

The fight, which many predicted would be Fight of the Night at Kaseya Center, potentially lived up to the hype for as long as it lasted. Yanez landed damaging shots prior to Font’s final flurry. After a couple of exchanges, Font’s face was noticeably swollen but he continued to push forward.

A counter right hand floored Yanez to the canvas. Font pounced with hammerfists and finished the fight until referee Keith Peterson dove in and saved Yanez.

With the victory, Font snaps a two-fight skid, which consisted of unanimous decision losses to Marlon Vera and Jose Aldo. Following the Vera loss, the most recent of the two, Font elected to take a year off from competition, at the advice of New England Cartel coach Tyson Chartier, due to damage sustained.

For Yanez, the defeat is his first in the UFC and it snaps a nine-fight winning streak overall. It marked the first time Yanez has been finished in his MMA career.

Yanez streaks into this fight with 5 straight victories since making his UFC debut on Oct. 31, 2020. With the exception of a split-decision win over Davey Grant in Nov. 2021, he has recorded 4 KO/TKO victories, including a 1st-Round win over Tony Kelley last time out in June 2022.

UFC 287: Font vs. Yanez picks and predictions

Records: Font (19-6-0) | Yanez (16-3-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

FONT (+155) is looking to slap the brakes on a 2-bout losing streak with a win over Yanez, and he’ll do just that in South Florida in one of the bigger upsets of the evening.

Font has faced a who’s who in the bantamweight division. The 35-year-old will use his experience, slight reach advantage and punching accuracy to wow the judges and do more in terms of points.

ROUND BETTING: FONT ON POINTS (+275) for a chance to nearly triple up is a very enticing play.

Over/Under (O/U)

If you don’t want to declare a winner then WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? YES (-110) is a strong play, especially more so than Over 1.5 Rounds (-250), which will cost you 2 1/2 times your potential return.

If anything, FONT TO WIN BY SPLIT OR MAJORITY DECISION (+1100) is worth a roll of the dice for a chance to multiply your initial wager by 11 times.
