Florida offensive lineman named to Rimington Trophy Watch List

Florida’s incumbent starting center Jake Slaughter made the Rimington Trophy Watch List, which was announced on Friday.

The Rimington Trophy Preseason Watch List was announced on Friday and yet another member of the Florida Gators earned a mention on one of many prestigious previews for the coming fall.

Offensive lineman [autotag]Jake Slaughter[/autotag], who played in all 12 games in 2023 and started eight games at center, got the call this year after filling in admirably when previous starting center [autotag]Kingsley Eguakun[/autotag] was sidelined with an injury for most of the season. The then-redshirt sophomore made the most of the opportunity handed to him, ultimately grading out as the No. 14 center in the FBS with an 81.2 PFF grade across 622 total snaps.

Slaughter is the only member of Florida’s returning corps to earn a spot among PFF’s top interior offensive linemen this fall.

“His 81.2 grade was second among Power Five centers to only Jackson Powers-Johnson,” according to PFF. “He also performed well in our GAS metric, which allows him to dominate on zone runs. His 82.4 run-blocking grade on such plays tied for fifth in the Power Five. As a full-time starter in 2024, expect Slaughter to become much more of a household name.”

Rimington Award announcement

“The Rimington Trophy is proud to release its 2024 preseason Watchlist. This year, the Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow down its list to the top 40 centers. PFF grades every player on every play of every game on how well they execute their given assignment.

“That play-by-play grading allowed the Trophy committee to create a watchlist based both on nominations from the schools and data provided by PFF. Once the season begins, schools will be able to nominate their centers for late addition based on in-season merit.”

Texas’ center Derek Kerstetter named to Rimington watch list

Texas Longhorns center Derek Kerstetter was named to the Rimington Trophy watch list on Wednesday. It is presented to the top center in FBS.

On Wednesday Texas senior center Derek Kerstetter was named to the 2020 Rimington watch list. The Rimington Trophy is awarded annually to the best center in all of college football.

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football. Since its inception, award has raised over $4.5 million for the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first-team All-America center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the John Outland Trophy’s only two-time winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman. The Rimington Trophy is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast over 800 recipients, dating to 1935. Visit ncfaa.org to learn more about the association. – From the Rimington Trophy’s website

The winner is determined by the committee with the help of the Walter Camp Foundation, The Sporting News and the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

Kerstetter is in his first season as the starting center for Texas after moving over from right tackle. Following Zach Shackelford’s departure to the NFL, they need someone to step in and take over. Kerstetter is one of the top players among the offensive line along with tackle Samuel Cosmi, so it should come as no surprise to see his name on the watch list.
