UFC Fight Night 247 loses another co-main event one day out

It was a rough day at the UFC Fight Night 247 weigh-ins.

LAS VEGAS – It was a rough day at the UFC Fight Night 247 weigh-ins.

Two fighters missed their marks on the scale. But even though he hit his mark, [autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag] (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) was pulled from his bantamweight co-main event against [autotag]Bernardo Sopaj[/autotag] (11-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC), it was announced after the official weigh-ins, for medical reasons.

That fight only had been elevated to the co-main event when an original matchup between former champion Cody Garbrandt and Miles Johns was scrapped when Garbrandt pulled out earlier in the week. Now the middleweight bout between UFC newcomer and former two-division ONE Championship titleholder Reinier de Ridder (17-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) and Gerald Meerschaert (37-17 MMA, 12-9 UFC) presumably will get the esteemed second-billed spot, though the UFC has not yet made a formal announcement of the changes.

It is not yet known which fight from the prelims will move up to the planned five-fight main card, though all the fights stream on ESPN+, regardless. UFC Fight Night 247 takes place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

The new UFC Fight Night 247 lineup now includes:

MAIN CARD (ESPN+, 7 p.m. ET)

  • Neil Magny vs. Carlos Prates
  • Reinier de Ridder vs. Gerald Meerschaert
  • Luana Pinheiro vs. Gillian Robertson

Spinning Back Clique REPLAY: Imavov-Cannonier ends in controversy, Conor McGregor & UFC 303 drama, more

On “Spinning Back Clique,” our panel recaps the results from UFC on ESPN 57, discusses the latest of the Conor McGregor drama, and much more.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Dan Tom and Danny Segura will join host “Gorgeous” George Garcia live at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate the following topics:

  • UFC on ESPN 57 went down this past Saturday, and it left the MMA world with plenty to talk about. In the main event,
[autotag]Nassourdine Imavov[/autotag] defeated veteran [autotag]Jared Cannonier [/autotag] in what many online deemed to be a questionable stoppage. This card also saw [autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] snap a four-fight losing skid, [autotag]Raul Rosas Jr.[/autotag] submit [autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag], and more. We take a close look and break down the key results of the card.
  • [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag] dominated the news – or actually the lack of this past week. The MMA superstar wasn’t able to make it for the UFC 303 press conference on Monday, canceling the event entirely. He then posted a cryptic tweet along with a captionless photo in what looked to be a physicians’ office. [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag] also aired his frustration, announcing that he’ll be leaving his training camp in South Florida to return to his home in Tennessee. What is going on? Will the UFC 303 main event happen? We discuss.
  • A few things also happened in the boxing world in connection to MMA. [autotag]Jake Paul[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Mike Tyson[/autotag] got a new date after their original date was canceled due to a health issue from Tyson’s part. [autotag]Nate Diaz[/autotag] and [autotag]Jorge Masvidal[/autotag]’s teams got into a brawl in the latest press conference promoting their upcoming boxing match on July 6. What’s the interest level on these fights? The panel weighs-in.
  • There we many other stories present in the always-busy MMA world. Each member of the “Spinning Back Clique” panel highlights one story that caught their attention this past week.

UFC on ESPN 57 results: Raul Rosas Jr. taps Ricky Turcios with slick rear-naked choke

Raul Rosas Jr. continues to prove why he’s one of the most exciting prospects in the UFC today by picking up another finish.

[autotag]Raul Rosas Jr.[/autotag] proved he possesses the superior rear-naked choke game, as he outworked Ricky Turcios on the mat.

In the feature main card bout of UFC on ESPN 57 at KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky., the 19-year-old Rosas Jr. (9-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) battled Turcios (12-4 MMA, 2-2 UFC) on the ground, eventually securing a rear-naked choke finish at 2:22 of Round 2.

Turcios attempted to get into his Rosas Jr.’s head right out of the gate. He refused a glove touch and instead yelled at Rosas Jr. before throwing a hard kick.

A few moments later, Rosas Jr. was controlling from top position after getting a takedown, and the fans began chanting “Ricky sucks” for his opening antics.

The remainder of the round would be spent on the canvas scrambling and exciting rear-naked choke sequences from both. Turcios had his own locked in, but Rosas Jr. slipped out to latch on to a choke of his own, but neither would get the finish in the opening round.

Rosas Jr. came out of the gate fast in Round 2, connecting with a nice step-in knee before getting another takedown and finding his way to Turcios’ back. Soon enough, Rosas Jr.’s arm was under the neck again, but this time, there would be no escape for Turcios, who was forced to tap.

During his post-fight interview, Rosas Jr. dedicated the fight to his recently deceased coach and asked Dana White to increase the bonus to $100,000 so he could buy his mother a house.

Rosas Jr. has now won back-to-back fights. In his previous outing, he stopped Terrence Mitchell with punches from mount for a first-round stoppage. The young prospect is now 3-1 in his UFC career, and hopes to land a spot on the upcoming card at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

Turcios entered on the heels of a split decision victory over Kevin Natividad, which came in November 2022. The loss against Rosas Jr. knocks him back to .500 in his UFC career.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Ricky Turcios prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 57

Exciting bantamweights Raul Rosas Jr. and Ricky Turcios meet in the featured bout of UFC on ESPN 57. Who gets the win?

[autotag]Raul Rosas Jr.[/autotag] and [autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag] meet Saturday in the featured bout on the main card of UFC on ESPN 57 from KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Ricky Turcios UFC on ESPN 57 preview

Rosas Jr. (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) will look to make it two in a row for the first time in his UFC career. After suffering his first career loss last April to Christian Rodriguez, the young bantamweight bounced back with a first round TKO of Terrence Mitchell in September. … Turcios (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) also enters this matchup coming off a loss, followed by a win in 2022. Turcios has been inactive since, and enters his first fight in over 18 months.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Ricky Turcios UFC on ESPN 57 expert pick, prediction

Filling out the main card is a bantamweight battle between Raul Rosas Jr. and Turcios.

This bout was initially scheduled to go down in February of this year, but Rosas Jr. was forced to withdraw on fight day due to illness.

The UFC opted to keep this fight together given that Rosas Jr. appears to be a fighter they have specific plans and high hopes for, which probably explains why the 19-year-old prospect is so heavily favored here.

Turcios, who is certainly the more experienced of the two fighters, brings a wider array of strikes to work with on the feet and quietly carries a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his back pocket.

Turcios’ on-paper advantages may be enough to stop him from getting submitted, but his propensity to allow fights to get ugly could ultimately favor a superior positional scrambler like Rosas Jr. to get the jump on him.

For that reason, I’ll side with Rosas Jr. to force a stoppage by strikes from the mount position in Round 1.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Ricky Turcios UFC on ESPN 57 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the younger fighter, listing Rosas Jr. as a -265 favorite, and Turcios as a +200 underdog, via FanDuel.

Raul Rosas Jr. vs. Ricky Turcios UFC on ESPN 57 start time, how to watch

As the featured main card bout, Rosas Jr. and Turcios are expected to make their walks to the octagon at approximately 9:35 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Dominick Reyes vs. Dustin Jacoby prediction, pick, start time, odds for UFC on ESPN 57

Dominick Reyes meets Dustin Jacoby in the UFC on ESPN 57 co-main event. Will the former title challenger stop his skid?

[autotag]Dominick Reyes[/autotag] and [autotag]Dustin Jacoby[/autotag] meet Saturday in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN 57 from KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. Check out this quick breakdown of the matchup from MMA Junkie analyst Dan Tom.

Dominick Reyes vs. Dustin Jacoby UFC on ESPN 57 preview

Reyes (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) entered his title shot against Jon Jones in 2020 as an undefeated fighter at 12-0. After coming up short on the scorecards, he has failed to record a victory since, as he enters the UFC on ESPN 57 co-main on a four-fight skid that includes three straight stoppages. … Jacoby (19-8-1 MMA, 7-5-1 UFC) has struggled to gain traction as of late, going 1-3 in his last four. His last victory came in a first-round stoppage against Kennedy Nzechukwu last August, followed by a setback against Alonzo Menifield in December.

Dominick Reyes vs. Dustin Jacoby UFC on ESPN 57 expert pick, prediction

The co-main event in Kentucky features a light heavyweight showdown between Reyes and Jacoby.

Despite arguably beating the great Jon Jones three rounds to one back at UFC 247, Reyes’ career took a dramatic downswing in the subsequent years, dropping three consecutive fights due to stoppages from strikes.

Now, almost a year and a half since his last defeat, Reyes will attempt to stop the bleeding of a four-fight skid when he steps into the octagon with “The Hanyan” this Saturday.

Jacoby is the more active fighter, coming from a solid camp in Factory-X Muay Thai. That said, Jacoby’s durability has also cost him in past performances due to his propensity to find himself in close fights.

Couple that with the fact that Jacoby has a .500 record against southpaws (currently standing at 2-4 opposite UFC-level lefties), and I have a sneaky suspicion that Reyes can get back on track by reminding Jacoby that left hands are his common culprit.

Although an early knockout on either side wouldn’t shock me, I’ll take a flier on the underdog Reyes to land the more impactful offense en route to a narrow decision win.

Dominick Reyes vs. Dustin Jacoby UFC on ESPN 57 odds

The oddsmakers and the public are favoring the more active man, listing Jacoby as a -230 favorite and Reyes as a +176 underdog, via FanDuel.

Dominick Reyes vs. Dustin Jacoby UFC on ESPN 57 start time, how to watch

As the co-main event, Reyes and Jacoby are expected to make their walks to the octagon at approximately 10:05 p.m. ET. The fight broadcasts live on ESPN and streams on ESPN+.

Ricky Turcios no longer upset at Raul Rosas Jr. for last-minute withdrawal: ‘I put the past behind me’

Ricky Turcios says he’s no longer upset at Raul Rosas Jr. for his withdrawal in February.

It appeared [autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag] vs. Raul Rosas Jr. had the potential to turn into a bit of a grudge match a few months ago, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case anymore.

Turcios (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Rosas Jr. (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) were originally scheduled to fight in February at a UFC Fight Night event in Mexico. However, minutes before the fight, with the event already started, Rosas Jr. pulled out from the fight, citing illness. Turcios wasn’t happy with the cancelation of his bout and was critical of Rosas.

Now, fighting at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 57, Turcios no longer has any issues with Rosas Jr.

“The past is the past, you know what I’m saying?” Turcios said at UFC on ESPN 57 media day on Wednesday. “I put the past behind me in February in Mexico. I hit the reset button, and now we have a new challenge on the horizon.

“On that day, I don’t want to put too much energy into it anymore because it’s in the past. I was upset in Mexico, but I looked in the mirror and for me, I was like, ‘Let me calm myself. Let me calm myself. Let me meditate and focus on what I can do.’ I had to reset and chill and do what I do.”

Turcios is eager to finally back in the cage, given that he was supposed almost four months ago. He hopes for a finish, but willing to go to war all three rounds if necessary.

“As I enter into the octagon this Saturday, it’s just another opponent standing in the way of my goals,” Turcios said. “As I enter into the octagon, I have one objective and one objective only and that’s to win any means necessary, by knockout, submission, or frick it, if he’s super tough, we’ll go to war all the way to a decision.”

Raul Rosas Jr. slighted by Ricky Turcios’ criticism of his withdrawal, confident he’ll ‘put him out’ at UFC on ESPN 57

Raul Rosas Jr. didn’t appreciate Ricky Turcios’ comments about his withdrawal from their original booking back in February.

Friends on not, [autotag]Raul Rosas Jr.[/autotag] intended to put Ricky Turcios away in their original booking back in February. Now fighting on Saturday, Rosas has a little more motivation to get that done.

Rosas Jr. (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) and Turcios (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) clash on the main card of UFC on ESPN 57, which takes place at KFC Yum! Center in Louisville, Ky. This is the third date they have been scheduled to meet, as they were initially scheduled to fight on Feb. 24 and then a week later at another UFC Fight Night event after the original date fell through.

Rosas Jr. withdrew from their first date minutes before the fight as he fell ill. Then, in the following booking, Rosas Jr. had a scheduling conflict that didn’t allow him to compete. Turcios wasn’t happy with Rosas Jr. not fighting in February and initially criticized him, saying Rosas Jr. was “unprofessional” and “disrespected the Bushido code.”

Turcios may have changed his tune since, but his original comments haven’t sat well with “El Niño Problema.”

“It does change it a little because now I’m going to go out, and we’ll see if he comes out clean this time,” Rosas Jr. told MMA Junkie. “He had posted he had come out clean in the last fight, so we’ll see if he can say the same things he was saying after the last fight that we didn’t fight. But yeah, he’s a little weird, for sure. He comes and tells me it’s all respect, but then goes out there and says those type of things online, so we’ll see if he can back it up.

“If I really disrespected his code, we’ll see if he does something about it on Saturday night.”

Although it’s been just a few months, the 19-year-old Rosas Jr. believes he’s evolved tremendously since that first booking. He plans on showing that advancement by stopping Turcios.

“I think he’s going to have a hard time either way the fight goes,” Rosas Jr. said. “He’s a durable fighter. He has a lot of heart, and he’s going to keep coming after I put a beating on him. He’s going to keep coming, so I’m ready for that. I’m ready for a war, but I’m going to put him out whether it’s Round 1, 2 or 3. I’m pretty sure I’m going to put him out.”

Ricky Turcios casts doubt on quick UFC rebooking with ‘unprofessional’ Raul Rosas Jr., who ‘disrespected the Bushido code’

Ricky Turcios reacts to Raul Rosas Jr.’s withdrawal from UFC Fight Night 237 in Mexico City.

[autotag]Ricky Turcios[/autotag] got about as close as a UFC fighter can get to a fight without fighting, and he’s not happy about it.

Saturday, Turcios (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) was geared up and ready to walk out to fight [autotag]Raul Rosas Jr.[/autotag] on the main card of UFC Fight Night 237 in Mexico City. However, minutes before the walkout, it was announced Rosas (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) had withdrawn from the fight due to illness.

It was announced on the broadcast and later by UFC CEO Dana White that the Rosas-Turcios matchup was rebooked for this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 238 in Las Vegas. Turcios called the announcement “fake news” in an Instagram story he later deleted.

“Last night, Rosas Jr. said no fight literally 5 minutes before the walkout to the fight in the octagon,” Turcios wrote on Instagram. “Rosas Jr said no to facing me in front of hid 20,000 Mexican fans in Mexico City. Rosas Jr. disrespected the Bushido code, very unprofessional. Ricky ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ wins in Mexico City. Viva Mexico! Thank you to all my friends and family and all the fans. Love you all.”

It’s not unheard of for the UFC to announce plans for bookings without both sides of the contracts signed. The status of the Rosas-Turcios booking has not yet been made official by the UFC, but if the rebooking goes down Saturday like White said, it is expected to be at a catchweight.
