On this day: Celtics Carlisle, Turner, Morgan born; Tsioropoulos debut; Beenders passed

On this day in Boston Celtics history, Rick Carlisle, Evan Turner, and Rex Morgan were born, Lou Tsioropoulos debuted, and Hank Beenders passed away.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, small forward and current Indiana Pacers head coach Richard “Rick” Preston Carlisle was born in Ogdensburg, New York in 1959. Carlisle played his college ball with the Universities of Maine and Virginia, leading the latter to a Final Four loss to Hakeem Olajuwon’s Houston Cougars in 1984.

The former Cavalier would be selected 70th overall in the 1984 NBA draft (there were several more rounds in that era), and would go on to win a title with the team in 1986 in a reserve role before being waived by the team in the fall of 1987.

Carlisle averaged 2.2 points and an assist per game as a Celtic.

Rajon Rondo on playing for Rick Carlisle, Doc Rivers, Ty Lue

Rondo even admitted his own coaching aspirations and his love for teaching the game.

Former Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo recently reflected on the effect of various coaches on his career during an interview with ex-NBAer JJ Redick, the host of the “Old Man and the Three” podcast.

The 2008 Celtics champ discussed how Doc Rivers helped him grow as a professional and manage playing with star teammates. He recalled how Doc allowed him to call plays during games, which gave him a unique perspective on managing the team’s dynamics.

He also mentioned Rick Carlisle’s non-traditional coaching style and Tyronne Lue’s attention to detail and preparation. Rondo even admitted his own coaching aspirations and his love for teaching the game.

To hear what the onetime Kentucky star had to say about the various head coaches he has had the privilege to play for, take a look at the clip embedded below.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 34

Today’s installment focuses on the 11 players who wore No. 34 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Today’s installment focuses on the 11 players who wore No. 34 over the years as of August 2023.

On this day: Bias dies; Carlisle drafted; Carr hired as coach; Boston trades back for Tatum

On this day, vaunted Boston Celtics draftee Len Bias passed away, Rick Carlisle was drafted, M.L. Carr was hired as head coach, and Boston traded back for the pick used to take Jayson Tatum.

On this day in 1986, Len Bias, the Boston Celtics’ selection with the No. 2 pick of the 1986 NBA draft, died just two days after his selection by the team. Bias, a highly-rated 6-foot-8 small forward out of the University of Maryland, returned home from the June 17 draft in New York City and went to a party at his alma mater.

He and several friends used cocaine for several hours, triggering a fatal arrhythmia. The loss devastated the family, friends, Celtics, and the wider basketball world. It was a major catalyst of a two-decade decline for the Celtics.

They did not win another championship after Bias’ death until 2008.

Pacers’ Rick Carlisle in awe of Sixers star Joel Embiid after huge performance

Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle is in awe of what Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is doing after another huge performance.

Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid delivered again on Saturday night on the road. With the Sixers being short-handed missing both James Harden and PJ Tucker due to injuries, Embiid delivered another easy performance.

The big fella had 31 points on 10-for-15 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists to lead the Sixers to a 141-121 win over the Indiana Pacers on the road. Philadelphia has now won eight in a row and is sitting comfortably as the No. 3 seed in the East standings.

Embiid did all of that in just 30 minutes as he didn’t have to play in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive game and for the third time in the last four games. After Embiid victimized his team, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle was just in awe of what he’s doing out on the floor at the moment.

Embiid is just another level at the moment. He continues to throw the Sixers on his back and if he continues to play at this level and Philadelphia continues to win at this pace, he will certainly make a convincing case to win the MVP award.

Rick Carlisle: Thunder wanted to draft Pacers guard Andrew Nembhard

“I think Sam Presti told me that they were going to take him at (34) if we hadn’t taken him at 31.”

During practice on Wednesday, Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle revealed an interesting bit of intel related to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

When asked about rookie guard Andrew Nembhard, Carlisle revealed the Thunder were the other big competitor to draft him during the 2022 NBA draft.

“Andrew Nembhard was a guy that Kevin (Pritchard) had been talking about all year last year as a guy he liked. He played one of the two days in Chicago at the pre-draft camp and played well. Then, it was just a matter of getting lucky and having him be there at 31 because I think Oklahoma was at 32 and I think Sam Presti told me that they were going to take him at 32 if we hadn’t taken him at 31. A lot of things fell into place.”

While Carlisle misspoke a bit — the Thunder owned the 34th pick not the 32nd in this past draft — this is the first time it has been noted that Oklahoma City had interest in Nembhard, who is enjoying a phenomenal rookie campaign.

In 45 games, the 23-year-old is averaging 8.5 points on 42.8% shooting, four assists and 2.9 rebounds.

While Jaylin Williams — the player the Thunder selected at No. 34 — has had a decent rookie campaign, adding a steal in Nembhard to go along with Chet Holmgren, Ousmane Dieng and Jalen Williams would’ve made this already good draft class to a great one.

Alas, that’s how the draft process goes. Such a volatile process makes misses/close calls like Nembhard an inherent part of it.

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle gives utmost respect to Sixers star James Harden

Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has the utmost respect for Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden.

PHILADELPHIA — Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has seen a lot during his 21 years of coaching in the NBA. He led the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA title in 2011, and has had substantial success throughout his years coaching the Mavericks, the Detroit Pistons and the Pacers.

During his time coaching the Mavs, Carlisle ran into Philadelphia 76ers star James Harden plenty of times in the playoffs. The Beard began his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Houston Rockets where he put his stamp on the league.

“He’s one of the best,” Carlisle said of Harden. “He’s one of the best one-on-one players in the history of the game. He won the MVP essentially being the guy that put the Houston Rockets team on his back and just was the creator. A lot of it was pick-and-roll, but a lot of it was just flat-out manufacturing it off the dribble which is so hard to do.”

Harden is not the ruthless scorer that he once was, but he is one of the top playmakers in the league strictly off his basketball IQ and being able to direct guys into position to score. He’s averaging 22.3 points, 10.8 assists and 6.0 rebounds on the season as he continues to evolve his game.

“There’s just a few guys in the game that have that capability,” Carlisle continued. “Like, Luka (Donic) does, he does, LeBron (James) can still go get it. I mean, Donovan Mitchell I think you’d have to say after his game a couple of nights ago is a guy that can create shots, but James had to do it for multiple years.”

Then recalling his time coaching the Mavericks, Carlisle remembered how tough it was to defend Harden every time they matched up.

“I lost count of the number of times we played him over the years in Dallas, but it was four times a year because they were in the division,” he finished. “It was very difficult.”

Harden and the Sixers will look to continue to grow when they play host to the Chicago Bulls on Friday.

Rick Carlisle recounts Larry Bird’s inspiring return to Boston as new Pacers head coach

Larry Bird first returned to the Boston Garden as an opposing coach in January of 1998. Rick Carlisle was there for the extraordinary moment.

Current Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle has a number of connections to the city of Boston and the Boston Celtics. He began his playing career with the Celts, playing four seasons with the team. winning the 1986 NBA championship as a reserve in the process. He went to high school in Worcester, and Carlisle coached alongside Larry Bird as an assistant in the 1990s as well.

Back in the city to play the team that drafted him out of the University of Virginia as Boston faced Indiana, the now-head coach of the Pacers was asked by the Celtics Wire about the homecoming. He has previously said playing for Boston “changed his life.”

“I don’t know how many times I’ve been back” Carlisle said Wednesday before the game. “There have been a lot of memorable games, though.”

Warriors going small with Draymond at the 5 alongside Wiggins, Moody, Klay and Steph. Interested to see how Miami matches up with Bam, Martin, Robinson, Herro and Lowry (as I’m typing this, Herro connect with Bam on an open lob). – 8:24 PM

Yeah this offense early doesn’t feel like it has an identity
A lot of high-low stuff between Jimmy and Bam
That’s just not them
Herro-Wiggins matchup is tough, and Lowry’s kinda been out of the play a lot – 7:50 PM
CJ Holmes @CjHolmes22
Klay Thompson does not look sharp so far. Threw a pass out of bounds early. Fumbled a pass from Curry later, leading to another turnover. Just tried to force up a shot over Tyler Herro and got blocked. – 7:50 PM
Jack Winter @ArmstrongWinter
Andrew Wiggins playing w/much more intensity on defense early. He’s quietly struggled on that end in past few games, reverting back to more casual, pre-playoffs approach.
Already cut off Lowry drive, blocked Herro runner in iso. Talking, communicating, too. Good to see for Dubs. – 7:50 PM

More on this storyline

Kings coach Mike Brown was not happy with officials following his team’s 110-107 loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday at FTX Arena. Brown made his feelings clear during his postgame news conference, saying he felt Heat guard Tyler Herro traveled before making a game-winning 3-pointer with 1.8 seconds remaining. “We’ve got a lot of respect for the program, the Miami Heat, (coach Erik) Spoelstra and everything they’ve done, and Tyler Herro’s a great player, but he traveled,” Brown said. “He traveled on the last play and I would not be doing my job if I didn’t come up here and protect my guys. My guys fought their behind off for close to 48 minutes, and to (see Herro) pump fake and then sidestep, or hop and then one-two and a shot, and not make that call, to me it’s just unbelievable.” -via Sacramento Bee / November 3, 2022

Michael Scotto: In our NBA executives top breakout player poll just missed the number one spot behind Tyrese Maxey. In talking with Rick Carlisle before the game, I asked him what he thought of Tyrese Haliburton’s potential and his ceiling. Carlisle replied, “I believe Tyrese has a very high ceiling. I believe being a future All-Star is definitely in the mix. He’s got the kind of game that’s fun to watch. You love the joy, the vibe, and the skill. He’s an artist. His shot is a little different. He’s a very effective player, and he’s been very efficient.” -via HoopsHype / November 3, 2022
Michael Scotto: In talking with Rick Carlisle, he mentioned a couple of things. He said Jalen Smith decided to stay with the Pacers when there were other offers that were more lucrative financially, but he felt major love from the fans, the coaching staff, and management. Defensively, he’s got a high ceiling with what he can do defending the perimeter, and they know he can guard the rim and block shots. Carlisle called him an “important part of our future” as well. Scott Agness: The most interesting thing to me was how they originally agreed to a two-year deal, but then it became a three-year deal with a player option and a trade kicker. It was highly unlikely for Jalen to return… The Pacers promised him a starting spot, whereas he didn’t have that with the Phoenix Suns and wasn’t really appreciated. Smith felt that and came to a situation where he was prioritized. Carlisle flew out to Maryland and met with him and sat down for dinner with his parents… He’s playing the long game and committed to a franchise that’s committed to him. -via HoopsHype / November 3, 2022

On this day: Boston sees the Grateful Dead in concert; Shaw, Hunter debut

On this day, several Boston Celtics accompanied resident Deadhead and Celtics center Bill Walton to see the Grateful Dead in concert in 1985.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, several members of the storied franchise went to see the Grateful Dead in concert in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1985. Not all the Celtics went, but after recent arrival Bill Walton had managed to pique the interest of a few of his teammates, a significant portion of the team decided to attend the concert.

A few days ahead of the planned concert, Hall of Fame teammates Larry Bird and Kevin McHale had noticed some hippie-ish looking people wearing funky clothes arriving in town, and made the connection it must have something to do with their hippie-ish teammate.

Walton had himself previously met the band after sticking out like a sore thumb as a 7-footer at one of their concerts, catching the eye of drummer Mickey Hart, who called him on stage after learning who he was.
