Broncos hire Pat Shurmur as new offensive coordinator

The Broncos have officially hired Pat Shurmur, who will replace former offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

It’s official, the Broncos have a new offensive coordinator.

After the team fired Rich Scangarello on Sunday, reports quickly emerged that the team planned to hire former Giants coach Pat Shurmur to replace Scangarello. Denver officially announced the hire on Tuesday.

Shurmur hasn’t found much success as a head coach — he has a 19-46 record — but he is a respected offensive mind. Shurmur won AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year honors in 2017 as a coordinator after helping the Vikings reach the NFC Championship game.

Broncos coach Vic Fangio and general manager John Elway feel that Shurmur is an upgrade over Scangarello. The stats from last season reflect that belief, but not by much.

Denver’s offense averaged 298.6 yards per game (28th) and 17.6 points per game (28th). New York’s offense averaged 298.6 yards per game (23rd) and 21.3 points per game (18th). Shurmur’s 2019 numbers are better, of course, but they still ranked in the bottom half of the league.

The Broncos now have two assistant coaches with head coach experience — Shurmur and offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who served as the Titans’ head coach from 2011-2013.

Vic Fangio comments on Broncos firing Rich Scangarello

“Rich is a bright coach with a great future ahead of him,” Broncos coach Vic Fangio said of former offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

The Denver Broncos fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello on Sunday evening. Scangarello spent just one season in Denver.

The decision to fire the coordinator was made by head coach Vic Fangio, who is entering his second year in charge of the team.

“After a lot of consideration and discussion after the season, I determined that a change at offensive coordinator ultimately would be best for our team,” Fangio said in a statement. “We need to do everything we can to get better — in all areas — as we start working toward next year.

“Rich is a bright coach with a great future ahead of him. I appreciate all of his hard work and thank him for his contributions to the Broncos.”

With Scangarello no longer running the offense, the Broncos are expected to hire former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur as their new offensive coordinator. To read more about Shurmur, click here.

7 things to know about new Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur

After firing offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, the Denver Broncos were quick to find his replacement in Pat Shurmur.

The Denver Broncos wasted no time on Sunday after deciding to move on from Rich Scangarello after one season as the team’s offensive coordinator. As his replacement, the team plans to hire Pat Shurmur.

The decision to replace Scangarello came as a bit of a surprise and comes about three weeks after the Broncos’ season came to a close. The team decided that Shurmur brings something that Scangarello couldn’t and a swift move was made.

So just who is Shurmur? We have you covered here.

1. He played college football at Michigan State

Before getting into coaching, Shurmur was a player for the Michigan State Spartans.

Born in Dearborn, Michigan, he went to the school in East Lansing and played mostly as an offensive lineman but also saw time at linebacker. From his sophomore season on, he played center for the team.

In his senior season, he helped the Spartans defeat the USC Trojans to win the Rose Bowl.

Broncos expected to hire Pat Shurmur as new offensive coordinator

The Broncos are expected to hire former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur to be their new offensive coordinator.

After parting ways with Rich Scangarello on Sunday, the Denver Broncos plan to make Pat Shurmur their new offensive coordinator, according to multiple media reports. Shurmur chose Denver over the Chicago Bears and several other teams, according to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.

Raanan noted on Twitter that the New York Giants — Shurmur’s former team — were “high on” quarterback Drew Lock leading up to last year’s NFL draft. New York ended up selecting quarterback Daniel Jones with the sixth overall pick and the Broncos selected Lock in the second round.

Shurmur, 54, has been coaching in the NFL since 1999. After serving as the Minnesota Vikings’ offensive coordinator in 2017 and earning Assistant Coach of the Year honors, he was named the Giants’ head coach in 2018. New York struggled under Shurmur, going 9-23 over the last two years.

Shurmur’s record as a head coach is not impressive (19-46) but he is a respected, experienced offensive mind. Denver now has two assistant coaches with head coach experience — Shurmur and offensive line coach Mike Munchak, who served as the Titans’ head coach from 2011-2013.

Broncos fire offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello

The Broncos have fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello.

The Denver Broncos will need to find a new offensive coordinator this offseason.

Denver has fired offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported Sunday. Broncos coach Vic Fangio made the decision, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

This move is a little surprising given that Fangio said during his end-of-season press conference in December that he believed all of the team’s coordinators would be brought back for the 2020 season.

The move is less surprising when considering Denver’s poor numbers on offense this season. Klis pointed out that the Broncos were the only team to finish in the bottom five of the league in points, yards, third-down percentage and red-zone percentage. Not exactly a good look for Scangarello.

The Broncos now have an opening at offensive coordinator. It seems unlikely that the team would bring back Gary Kubiak, who now serves as the Minnesota Vikings’ assistant head coach and offensive advisor. His son, Klint, might be a candidate, though.

Klint Kubiak served as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach in Denver from 2016-2018 and served as Minnesota’s QB coach in 2019.

It’s hard to imagine that the Broncos would fire their offensive coordinator without a potential replacement candidate in mind, so the position may be filled quickly. Expect the team to bring in candidates for interviews soon.
