Trojans Wire asks Rice expert about the Owls

At the @VoiceOfCFB, we got a chance to ask @s_helwick of @UnderdogDynasty about the Rice Owls. Learn about USC’s first opponent of 2022.

Steve Helwick of Underdog Dynasty and Hustle Belt follows Group of Five college football. He was and is the perfect guest to talk about the Rice Owls, USC’s first opponent of the new season.

On Mark Rogers’ USC show at The Voice of College Football, Mark and I were both able to ask Steve about Rice.

You’ll get a lot of detailed analysis on Rice players, the Owls’ coaching staff, the expected lines of attack from the Rice offense, the key one-on-one matchups in this game, the more intriguing position groups on the Rice roster, and other notable talking points connected to Saturday’s game in the Los Angeles Coliseum.

If you need a good primer on Rice, this is it.

Spoiler alert: Rice coach Mike Bloomgren used to coach at Stanford under David Shaw. Therefore, USC will get Stanford-style offensive concepts in each of its first two games, given that the Trojans visit the Cardinal in Week 2.

Rice Owls Preview 2022

It’s SO hard to win at Rice.

Small school, brilliant academics, tough requirements – it takes everything to work right for the program to succeed, and it’s been tough under Mike Bloomgren to build this thing up.

It might not seem like much, but winning the regular season finale against Louisiana Tech last year to get to four wins on the year was great.

The program hadn’t cracked the three-win mark since 2015, and the last winning season was in 2014 with an 8-5 run and a bowl victory.

That year, most of Conference USA had problems – Rice came up with a whole lot of wins over bad teams – and its offense was great, and that’s what has to happen this time around.

And more than that, this is the year to come through with something big before taking off for the American Athletic Conference.

The program is moving up, it’ll get a bigger profile, and it has something to shoot for.

But first, Bloomgren has to win. 11-31 in four years, he has to show that he’s the one to lead the program into the new era. He built the thing up to this point, and now it all has to work.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Offense

The offense had its moments. Controlling the clock hasn’t been a problem – the Owls were tenth in the nation and No. 1 in Conference USA holding the ball for well over 33 minutes a game – and the passing game was solid as the season went on, but turnovers were a problem and the ground attack has to be stronger.

There are enough parts to be better, but averaging more than 21.5 points per game is a must.

The offensive line has to be stronger. It was good in pass protection, but it needs to blast away a little more around the bulk of 300-pound Clay Servin and 330-pound Faae Pepe on the left side. 311-pound Shea Baker is a solid center.

Leading rusher Ali Broussard is back after averaging close to five yards per carry with 569 yards and three scores, but the offense needs to come up with a good rotation. 5-5, 160-pound Cameron Montgomery is a lightning quick option in space.

The Owls got production from the passing game, but they need consistency out of the position. Veteran Wiley Green will likely take over, but former JUCO transfer TJ McMahon will provide a push.

The receiving corps will be a strength even with top target Jake Bailey bailing for SMU. Cedric Patterson averaged over 15 yards per catch with a team-high six scores, Tulsa transfer Sam Crawford could be a dangerous No. 1 target, and former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey will be an interesting wide receiver option.

Helping even more is the return of 2019 star target Bradley Rozner, who played only one game over the last two seasons.

Rice Owls Preview 2022: Defense

Rice played lots and lots and lots and lots of guys on defense, and now this is a relatively deep group with more options after struggling throughout last year. The D gave up 36 points and 436 yards per game, but it came up with takeaways and there was a bit of a pass rush.

The top tackler was on the nose. Elijah Garcia is done, but the defense relies on the line to make things happen. Former offensive lineman Izeya Floyd is a 326-pounder who’ll take over on the inside, and there’s more quickness in the interior from Ikenna Enechukwu – he’s the team’s leading returning sacker with 4.5.

Playmaking LB Antonio Montero left for Villanova and Desmyn Baker took over for WKU. Aidan Siano got his feet wet last year and should work in the middle, but the D needs big plays from Kenneth Orji and Treshawn Chamberlain on the outside.

There weren’t a lot of picks from the corners, but Jordan Dunbar, Sean Fresch, and Miles McCord combined to make a whole lot of plays to go along with the rough days against the better downfield attacks. Sophomore S Gabe Taylor led the way with three interceptions and made 56 stops – he’ll be a bigger factor.

Rice Owls: Keys To The Season, Top Game, Top Transfer, Fun Stats NEXT

Players to watch for Rice: Luke McCaffrey

The younger brother of Christian McCaffrey will figure prominently in Rice’s offense against USC.

On June 14, 2021, former Nebraska quarterback Luke McCaffrey announced he would transfer to Rice and make the transition from quarterback to wide receiver. McCaffrey had transferred to Louisville from Nebraska earlier in the offseason, but he landed with the Owls. He has already been named a starting receiver for the team’s road opener at USC on Sept. 3.

McCaffrey was ranked the nation’s No. 142 overall prospect by ESPN.com, which listed him as the top prospect in Colorado and the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the country. He was also the top player in Colorado, the No. 11 athlete prospect in the nation, and among the top 300 players in the nation in the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He played in seven of eight games, including two starts at quarterback. McCaffrey completed 48-of-76 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown while rushing 65 times for 364 yards and three touchdowns.

Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren and offensive coordinator Marques Tuiasosopo presented the opportunity to McCaffrey to switch positions prior to spring practices. Rice is now looking for McCaffrey to be a huge threat for this offense. The former four-star recruit and younger brother of All-Pro Carolina Panther running back Christian McCaffrey is going to be the Owls’ gadget player at the receiver spot.

Luke McCaffrey told Underdog Dynasty how he feels about this new reality.

“One thing that I’m super thankful for about Coach Bloom and Coach Tui is they really left the decision to me,” McCaffrey said. “They never pressured me into switching positions. I just felt like where I was at in my career and what I wanted, it was the best decision for me to switch. To make that transition, it’s been an awesome decision and the way it was done through Coach Bloom and Coach Tui is something I’m so thankful for.” –

Expect Luke McCaffrey to shine in the opener this season. He could be a true X-factor for the Owls. For Rice it starts on offense: The Owls have to find a way to keep up with the Men of Troy’s loaded offense on Saturday.

[listicle id=47283]

Players to watch for Rice: quarterback Wiley Green

It’s not easy being Green. Wiley Green faces a very tall task for Rice when the Owls’ QB goes up against Caleb Williams and Company.

On Monday, Rice head coach Mike Bloomgren announced Wiley Green of Coppel, Texas, would be the Owls’ starter for their opening game against USC.

Green, a redshirt junior, beat out Southern California native T.J. McMahon for the starting job. Most people projected McMahon to start this season opener, but the veteran Green was consistent throughout camp.

Through four seasons, Wiley Green has thrown for 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, 1,849 yards, and a 62.9 QBR rating. His career has been riddled by injuries, but Green is looking to stay healthy and play up to expectations for 2022.

Rice obviously is a huge underdog in this game on the road versus USC, but in order for the Owls to stay in the game on Saturday, Green needs to limit turnovers, control the pace and distribute the ball to Luke McCaffrey and other targets: Sam Crawford, Bradley Rozner, Cedric Patterson, Jack Bradley, and Gavin Reinwald.

Green knows he will need to score a lot of points, but he has to be patient in making decisions and processing reads.

[listicle id=47151]

Players to watch for Rice: Sam Crawford Jr.

Meet some of the Rice Owls before the Houston-based school pays a visit to Los Angeles for the Trojans’ season opener.

Rice will need to cook on offense. The Owls have to score in bunches to have any prayer of keeping pace with USC and its loaded juggernaut.

Receiver Sam Crawford Jr. transferred from Tulsa, where he caught 114 passes for 1,623 yards 10 touchdowns in his three-year career with the Golden Hurricane. Now he hopes to be a key component for Rice this season as the Owls’ WR1.

The 6-foot-1, 209-pound receiver is expected to be the main target and deep threat for the Owls this season. He could be a stat filler in the season opener versus USC on September 3.

Sam Crawford Jr was recently named one of the top 100 most impactful transfers in the nation. He was one of the best deep threats in the AAC last year with a staggering 17.5 yards per reception.

Rice might try to keep the ball away from Caleb Williams and milk the clock, but at some point the Owls will need to try to hit the long ball and score. Crawford is part of that plan.

Louisiana Tech vs Rice Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Louisiana Tech is about to enter a new era after this, but head coach Skip Holtz gets one more game before moving on to other opportunities – whatever they might be.

Losing six of the last seven games was a problem. However, the team was close in fights against NC State and Old Dominion. Now it gets a shot to end its season on a high note against a Rice team that doesn’t do much defensively, has big turnover problems, and won’t get much pressure in the backfield.

Louisiana Tech’s line might not do much for the running game, but it’s not bad at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Rice Will Win

Louisiana Tech is one of those teams that can’t seem to create its own breaks.

It beat Charlotte a few weeks ago, and then it turned the ball over five times in the loss to a horrible Southern Miss team.

Rice has a steady enough passing game to keep things moving and control the clock.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t do anything to control much and the defense gives up a whole lot of points considering it’s not that awful at generating third down stops.

Rice should be able to crank up at least 200 passing yards, hold the ball for close to 35 minutes, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Holtz will go out with a win.

You are what your record says you are, but Louisiana Tech also hasn’t had a whole ton of breaks.

The Rice defense will be balanced, and it’ll seem like it always has the ball, but the Bulldogs will come up with three takeaways and capitalize on them all to end the season with something positive.

Rice vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

The Rice offense is working.

It was supposed to be a running team as the year went on, but the receivers were there from the start. Okay early on, now the passing attack has kicked it in with 200 yards or more in each of the last four games with a season-high 380 yards against WKU.

The Owls might be throwing well, but they’re about controlling the clock. UTEP lives on time of possession, and the Rice offense should be able to offset that. However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why UTEP Will Win

UTEP needs to get its groove back in a three-game losing streak. So what’s going wrong?

The defense has stopped taking the ball away.

The Miners forced 12 takeaways in the six wins, and it has a grand total of zero in the four losses. The Rice offense should be able to help change all of that.

The Owl offense might be playing better, but it’s also giving the ball away in bulk with five turnovers in the loss to WKU and six games with multiple mistakes.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Rice desperately needs a win to make something positive happen over the back half of the season, but UTEP will turn things back around with enough deep passing shots to matter and more than enough third down stops and takeaways to get by.

It might not be anything pretty, but in the home finale in a strong season, UTEP will close with a bang before going to UAB on the way to a bowl game.

WKU vs Rice Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game continues to be devastating.

It didn’t even go ballistic against Middle Tennessee last week and the Hilltoppers were still able to win easily. On a four-game winning streak, they’re a win away from being bowl eligible all while still being in the mix for the Conference USA championship.

They win this and beat Marshall next week, and they’re the East champs.

Does Rice have the passing game to keep up the pace? Not even close. They’re throwing reasonably well, but the pass defense has been rocky and the defense isn’t calming down hard enough – it’s not taking the ball away and has a tough time against midrange passing attacks.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Rice Will Win

SLOWWWWWWWWWW.

No, Rice doesn’t have the defense to keep up with Bailey Zappe and the WKU offense, but it’s putting up over 200 passing yards pre game without a problem lately and balanced things out on the ground in last week’s loss at Charlotte.

To do this, though, the O has to have the ball for close to 40 minutes and get this into the fourth quarter close. Rice leads Conference USA in time of possession, and WKU is among the worst in the nation at controlling the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hilltoppers will have a few more problems than it might like. Rice will be able to keep this relatively close for a while by grinding down the clock, but it’ll all burst open for a scoring stretch for a WKU attack that can’t be held down by this secondary.

Rice vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why Rice Will Win

Will the real Rice finally show up?

It pulled off a shocker against UAB and looked like it actually had a path to getting to a bowl game, and then …

Pffffffft. The air went out of the balloon in a loss to an awful North Texas team. However, the offense has a passing attack, it should be able to run well against a porous Charlotte defense, and this is when the O should be in control of the game.

Rice is 11th in the nation in time of possession as it grinds games down, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Charlotte Will Win

Charlotte is 10th. It knows how to control games.

Rice doesn’t do nearly enough defensively to come up with big plays, and the offense isn’t explosive enough to pick up the slack. It has to win by control, shortening the game, and hoping to be around to take over in the end.

Charlotte might not have a great defense – it’s a big, big problem – but it can control games, too. In this case, it’s going against an O that’s not going come up with enough big moments to bust the 49ers out of their style.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte will get back after a rough run of three road games after the last four – all losses.

The home offense will be a bit more productive, the running game will be okay, and the Rice attack won’t be able to take advantage of the pours D on the other side.
