Jaguars not wearing throwback uniforms for ‘homecoming’ game vs. 49ers

No, that retro logo on the Jaguars’ scoreboards Sunday wasn’t teasing that throwback uniforms are coming in Week 10.

The Jacksonville Jaguars won’t be wearing throwback uniforms during a home game against the San Francisco 49ers.

On Sunday, the scoreboards at EverBank Stadium teased the Week 10 “homecoming” game with retro logos for the 49ers and Jaguars.

The promo had many excited about the idea that the Jaguars could be wearing uniforms or helmets from sometime before the team changed its logo to its current one in 2013. Paul Lukas of UniWatch reached out to the Jaguars to ask if that’s the case and was told it isn’t.

“Our 49ers game is also Legends Weekend, hence the retro logo,” a Jaguars spokesperson told Lukas. “We will not be wearing throwback uniforms for that game. We’ll be welcoming back alumni from the last 29 seasons.”

The Jaguars have made several uniform changes in their history, most recently dropping their two-toned helmets for their current look in 2018. With NFL teams eligible to change their uniform after five years, many fans have hoped Jacksonville would return to its uniform design from the 1990s and the majority of the 2000s.

At the very least, many fans hoped the Jaguars would take advantage of the NFL’s relaxed rules regarding alternate uniforms and helmets. But it would’ve been surprising if Jacksonville wore throwbacks during the 2023 season after not unveiling the look during the offseason like most other teams.

Retro game fans are shocked over Nintendo trade-in price video

Trade-in prices are hit and miss at the best of times, but retro game fans could hardly believe how little one customer recently received

Trade-in prices are hit and miss at the best of times, but retro game fans could hardly believe how much, or how little, one local games store paid for a hefty haul that included classic SNES games. Twitter user hasanito posted the video of a retail representative at the game store – which one commenter identified as Hey Bro Video Games in Houston, Texas – panning a camera around to take in everything a customer traded in and said they offered a $700 payout.

The haul included a limited-edition, Pikachu-themed Japanese Nintendo 64; a complete-in-box Nintendo Entertainment System action set; and boxed versions of Super Mario 64, Goldeneye 007, Super Mario Kart, and Super Mario Bros. All-Stars. The customer used the payout to purchase a Tears of the Kingdom Switch OLED, but folks on Twitter were more than a little upset over how comparatively small the payout was.

Some posted images of online listings asking several hundred dollars for the Nintendo 64 console alone, while the NES set could fetch upwards of a few thousand dollars. These don’t necessarily seem to be normal listings, though. The average asking price for the NES set seems to hover around $200, while the N64 system ranges from $200 to $400 depending on the seller.

Still, the customer got what they wanted, agreed to the deal, and was happy about it. Whether the store underpaid them or not, at least it was worth it to them and they left with a smile.

Sorry Parasite Eve fans, Symbiogenesis is just Square Enix’s NFT game

Square Enix’s Symbiogenesis trademark sparked hope in Parasite Eve fans, but the retro game’s hoped-for revival is just an NFT game

Square Enix trademarked Symbiogenesis near the end of October and gave fans of the PS1 classic Parasite Eve a bit of hope that perhaps, at last, the unusual retro RPG might be getting a revival – but it was not to be. Square Enix announced Symbiogenesis in a press release and a Web3 convention, and if the location of the announcement wasn’t already a giveaway, it turns out Symbiogenesis is just Square Enix’s first NFT game.

Square Enix is one of a handful of major game publishers that remains committed to exploring the use of blockchain and web3 technology in game development. Interest in the technology seemingly peaked earlier in 2022 before starting to decline. Ubisoft implemented NFTs in a Ghost Recon game – before limited interest and a negative reception quickly put an end to that initiative.

Symbiogenesis is a “collectible art project” and an interactive narrative built around collecting characters. Players can use character art outside the game, but the main draw is supposed to be unraveling the game’s narrative mysteries by completing missions that revolve around “the monopolization and distribution of resources” – a rather ironic choice for an NFT project. The game is set to launch in early 2023.

Linking Symbiogenesis with Parasite Eve might seem hasty, but the concept is, as others reported, at the core of the RPG’s story, which centers on symbiosis and a catastrophic viral mutation, amidst a myriad of other tangled plot threads. Square Enix has also spent the last three years remaking and remastering many of its retro properties, but for now, it seems Parasite Eve will remain dormant.

Me enferma.

Classic ‘Star Wars’ video game bundles are coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 this year

A long time ago, on a console that’s (likely) far, far away…

Regret throwing your Nintendo 64 or PlayStation 2 consoles out because you can’t play old-school Star Wars  video games anymore? No worries, friend. The folks over at Aspyr are bringing several classic Star Wars  games to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 sometime this year.

The Star Wars Jedi Knight Collection and Star Wars Racer and Commando Combo are brand-new physical editions of a few fan-favorite titles. The Jedi Knight Collection contains Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, which many still consider having the best lightsaber fight mechanics in any video game.

Meanwhile, the Racer and Commando Combo has Republic Commando and Racer. The former is a solid squad-based first-person shooter, while the latter is a podracing game modeled after one of the few scenes of The Phantom Menace that was good. For real, you can even use Sebulba’s giant podracer and go like 900 MPH across Tatooine.

Previously, these games were only available digitally on most storefronts, so it’s cool to see a packaged deal. Aspyr did not announce a release date or price for either collection yet, though.

Unfortunately, Xbox fans aren’t getting in on the nostalgic goodness, as the Aspyr can’t publish the collections on Xbox platforms.

Seriously though, play Star Wars Racer. It was the best racing game on the Nintendo 64. Sorry, F-Zero X.

9 great retro video games we’d love to see remastered

Our nostalgia-infused wishlist of retro games that deserve a makeover.

Look, new games are great and all; nobody’s saying they’re not. But the twin prongs of nostalgia and a young games industry giddy with possibilities are hard to resist. Ergo: Playing the cream of the ’90s or early 2000s is almost always brilliant.

Except, of course, when our modern hardware gets in the way. The cold, hard truth is that Half-Life doesn’t know what a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is, and in all its futuristic imaginings, System Shock never dreamed of personal computers with 32GB of RAM.

So, folks, please welcome to the stage nine remasters we want to manifest into existence through sheer force of will.
