Despite posting near-identical figures thus far in the Clausura–Guadalajara is one better in goal differential–there appears more reason to be upbeat if you’re a Tijuana supporter.

Both outfits have gone winless in the league since triumphing in their opening matches of the Clausura, but Tijuana remains unbeaten at home and is still in the hunt for the Copa MX. The team has advanced to the quarterfinals after notching a win over Morelia and two wins against Atletico San Luis in the past month.

By contrast, Guadalajara has already been knocked out of the cup competition and hasn’t tasted victory since that Week 1 win over Juarez on January 12. Manager Luis Fernando Tena’s side also lost 3-0 at Tigres UANL in its last road fixture and has failed to keep a clean sheet in its last three outings.

The history books also show that Chivas hasn’t coped well in Tijuana, losing seven of its nine visits to Estadio Caliente. In fact, Guadalajara hasn’t beaten Tijuana away from home since its maiden visit to the ground back in September 2011 in a narrow 1-0 win.

Gustavo Quinteros’ men have assembled an impressive defensive record this season and conceded eight goals in six games, with only two teams having leaked fewer, but they have concerns on the attack. Tijuana has scored more than one goal in only two of its 10 outings so far this calendar year, one of which came in a 3-1 Copa MX win at home to Morelia.

Guadalajara will be desperate to end its seven match win drought in tough territory, though the pressures of climbing the standings could see both teams struggle to take full advantage.
