The PFL is back for the second of three sets of playoff semifinals. This week, welterweights and heavyweights are on the docket.

The 2022 PFL Playoffs 2 event takes place Saturday at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales. The main card airs on ESPN following prelims on ESPN+ and ahead of post-lim qualifiers on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, No. 1 welterweight seed and former Bellator champion [autotag]Rory MacDonald[/autotag] (23-9-1) meets late replacement [autotag]Dilano Taylor[/autotag] (9-2). Taylor stepped in for Magomed Umalatov on Thursday after Umalatov had visa issues. MacDonald is -205 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Taylor is +155. All but one of our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are siding with MacDonald to move on to the final.

At heavyweight, No. 2 [autotag]Ante Delija[/autotag] (21-5) takes on No. 3 [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] (9-3). It’s a pick’em fight at the betting window, and it’s close with our staff members, as well. Delija has the slimmest possible 6-5 lead in the picks.

In the other heavyweight semifinal, [autotag]Juan Adams[/autotag] (10-4) stepped in Thursday as a late replacement for No. 1 seed Denis Goltsov. He’ll take on [autotag]Matheus Scheffel[/autotag] (16-8), who himself was an alternate. Adams is a big -250 favorite, despite his late notice, but it’s Scheffel with a 6-5 narrow edge from our staff members.

And in the second welterweight semifinal on the main card, No. 2 seed [autotag]Sadibou Sy[/autotag] (11-6-2) takes on [autotag]Carlos Leal[/autotag] (17-3). Sy is a slim favorite at -120, but Leal has a major lead in the picks at 9-2.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, MacDonald (76 percent), Ferreira (52 percent), Adams (51 percent) and Leal (67 percent) are the choices.

2022 PFL salaries from Atlanta: Anthony Pettis tops disclosed payouts despite loss; Kayla Harrison second

This marks the first time that PFL salaries have been revealed in 2022.

The back half of the 2022 PFL regular season recently took place in Atlanta with three cards in three weeks at Overtime Elite Arena.

Each card spotlighted two specific divisions. PFL 4 took place June 17 and featured men’s lightweights and light heavyweights. One week later, PFL 5 featured featherweights and heavyweights. Last Friday, PFL 6 consisted of welterweights and women’s lightweights.

On Wednesday, MMA Junkie acquired a list of disclosed show and win purses from the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission, the regulatory body that oversaw the events.

Former UFC lightweight champion [autotag]Anthony Pettis[/autotag] ($750,000) led all paydays despite a submission loss to [autotag]Stevie Ray[/autotag]. Two-time PFL season winner [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag] ($500,00) was second on the list, followed by former UFC title challenger and Bellator welterweight champion [autotag]Rory MacDonald[/autotag] ($250,000).

[autotag]Jeremy Stephens[/autotag], [autotag]Lance Palmer[/autotag], [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag], [autotag]Omari Akhmedov[/autotag], and [autotag]Magomed Magomedkerimov[/autotag] also received six-figure disclosed payouts.

It’s important to note that the figures given do not reflect potential “locker room” bonuses, streaming points, or promotional sponsorship payments.

Renan Ferreira sets PFL heavyweight knockout record, wants money record next

If Renan Ferreira wanted to put his name atop the list of heavyweight contenders for Bruno Cappelozza’s throne, consider the job done.

ARLINGTON, Texas – If [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] wanted to put his name atop the list of heavyweight contenders for Bruno Cappelozza’s throne, consider the job done.

Ferreira (9-2) took out Jamelle Jones (12-8) in just 25 seconds Thursday at the PFL’s second event of the regular season. It was a heavyweight record for the promotion’s fastest finish. Ferreira threw a knee early in the fight, and his shin connected on the left side of Jones’ face and jaw. A few punches on the canvas later, and Ferreira was in the records books.

“There was definitely a game plan,” Ferreira said. “We knew he was going to try to grapple. We knew he was going to try to take me down and wrestle with me. Thank God, everything went on as planned.”

Ferreira fell short of the 2021 PFL postseason in part because his first fight in the regular season, against former UFC heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum, went all kinds of sideways.

Ferreira originally won with a first-round TKO. But when it was decided replays showed him tapping to a triangle choke missed by referee Keith Peterson, his win was flipped to a no contest. With no points from that fight and just three from a unanimous decision his next time out, Ferreira was left out of the four-man postseason bracket.

If given a chance to run things back with Werdum, who has decided he’ll likely come out of retirement, he’d take it. But he’d take anyone as long as he gets some redemption from 2021 and makes the postseason.

“I respect Fabricio an awful lot, but it’s my time,” Ferreira said. “I feel like this is my moment to shine. If we run this one back, I’m sure I’ll leave with the win again.

“Whoever the PFL puts in front of me, they’re going to have a tough task ahead of them. Cappelozza’s a tough opponent. He’s very aggressive. Should this fight happen, I know it’d be a war. It’d be a great bout, and I’d give my all to leave the cage with a win.”

The 32-year-old Ferreira’s quick win over Jones comes on the heels of a 31-second finish he had against Stuart Austin this past August. Those two results likely have the rest of the PFL’s heavyweights raising an eyebrow at the prospect of stepping in against him.

Couple that with an apparent boost of confidence and comfort, and Ferreira could be the 2022 season’s most dangerous heavyweight.

“I feel at home,” he said. “I’m extremely grateful to the PFL for giving me this opportunity. Rest assured, I’m here – and I’m here to be the champion. (I’m) a perfect example of hard work pays off. Last season, we had a couple hiccups that kept us from making it to the playoffs. But this year, rest assured, the belt is mine. I’m in great shape. I feel great. Whoever’s across the cage from me will have a tough task.

“This is just a consequence of the hard work. This comes with it. I guess the record I’d like to beat now is on the money side of things.”

Fastest KO in PFL heavyweight history: 6-foot-8-inch Renan Ferreira wrecks Jamelle Jones with sneaky shin to jaw

The quickest knockout in PFL heavyweight history (25 seconds) played out Thursday in Arlington, Texas.

[autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] has entered the PFL record books.

During his season-opening fight Thursday at 2022 PFL 2 in Arlington, Texas, Ferreira (9-2) introduced his shin to [autotag]Jamelle Jones[/autotag]’ chin in violent fashion when he finished the fight with a kick and follow-up punches in 25 seconds.

The finishing sequence started off with a sneaky front kick by Ferreira, which in real time fooled the PFL broadcast team into thinking it was a knee. Replay showed it was the shin that clipped Jones (12-8), however. Jones toppled to the canvas face-first as Ferreira blasted him with a barrage of punches that further walloped him into unconsciousness.

The knockout was the fastest in PFL heavyweight history and earned Ferreira six points in the 2022 season. The victory extended Ferreira’s winning streak to three and elongated Jones’ skid to two.

Check out the finish below:

The up-to-the-minute 2022 PFL 2 results include:

  • Renan Ferreira def. Jamelle Jones via knockout (head kick and punches) – Round 1, 0:25
  • Denis Goltsov def. Cody Goodale via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 3:20

The PFL is back for the second week of its 2022 season with featherweights and heavyweights on the bill.

PFL 2022, Week 2 takes place Thursday at Esports Arena in Arlington, Texas. The main card airs on ESPN2 following prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, 2021 heavyweight season champion [autotag]Bruno Cappelozza[/autotag] (14-5) takes on [autotag]Stuart Austin[/autotag] (15-7). Cappelozza is a heavy betting favorite to start the season out with a win, and all 11 of our editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers have him as one of three unanimous picks on the main card.

In the co-feature, two-time season champion [autotag]Lance Palmer[/autotag] (22-5) will try to get back on the right track at featherweight against [autotag]Chris Wade[/autotag] (20-7). Wade came up short in the 2021 final. But Palmer has not won a fight since his 2019 title; he lost both his fights in 2021. Wade is a slight betting favorite, but it’s Palmer with a big 8-3 lead in the picks.

The second biggest favorite on the card is [autotag]Brendan Loughnane[/autotag] (21-4), who takes on [autotag]Ryoji Kudo[/autotag] (10-2-1) in a featherweight bout to open the regular season. Loughnane is one of our three unanimous picks.

[autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] (8-2) meets [autotag]Jamelle Jones[/autotag] (12-7) in a heavyweight bout. Brazil’s Ferreira is as much as an 8-1 betting favorite, but he’s not a unanimous pick. Still, he’s got a sizable 8-3 lead from our staff pickers.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Denis Goltsov[/autotag] (27-7) is our third unanimous pick against heavyweight late-notice replacement [autotag]Cody Goodale[/autotag] (8-5). Goltsov is the biggest favorite on the card.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Cappelozza (94 percent), Palmer (55 percent), Loughnane (90 percent), Ferreira (89 percent) and Goltsov (85 percent) are the choices.

2021 PFL Playoffs 2 video: Renan Ferreira starches Stuart Austin with 31-second knockout

Renan Ferreira didn’t waste time getting his hand raised on Thursday evening with a quick knockout of Stuart Austin at 2021 PFL Playoffs 2.

[autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] continues to prove he’s a real problem for the heavyweights in PFL.

Closing out the prelims of 2021 PFL Playoffs 2, Ferreira (8-2 MMA, 2-0 PFL) took on Stuart Austin in a showcase heavyweight bout.

Ferreira wasted little time taking care of business as he knocked out Austin (15-7 MMA,0-1 PFL) with a hard right hand just 31 seconds into the first round.

Despite his impressive performances this season, Ferreira did not qualify for the playoffs, largely due to his controversial no contest against Fabricio Werdum, which left him a short of the points required to enter the next stage of the season.

In June, Ferreira defeated Carl Seumanutafa via unanimous decision and followed up that performance with an emphatic knockout victory. He closes out his 2021 PFL run with an impressive performance, and will likely enter next season as a favorite to make a strong playoff run.

Triple Take: Highlights and lowlights of the 2021 PFL regular season

Our Triple Take panel looks at the PFL’s six regular season events to examine the highs – and lows – on the way to the $1 million playoffs.

[mm-video type=video id=01f9amcaqq4vgw2rhpjr playlist_id=01eqvpne7c1q486dvv player_id=01f5k5h8pz3brj4xqb image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01f9amcaqq4vgw2rhpjr/01f9amcaqq4vgw2rhpjr-9b1e0d002a718740f77485a61c85f4d8.jpg]

The 2021 PFL regular season is in the books, and after taking a one year hiatus from live events due to the coronavirus pandemic, the promotion has rebounded and reasserted itself as a top player in MMA.

From putting on live events on ESPN2 to signing a number of key free agents to seeing some of those free agents getting upset in the cage, there have been many twists and turns in what arguably has been PFL’s breakout year.

With the playoffs and $1 million championship rounds up next, there’s more to come from PFL before the year is out. With six regular season events complete, we thought it was a good time to examine the good and the bad from PFL this year.

In the latest edition of MMA Junkie’s “Triple Take,” the panel of Mike Bohn, Farah Hannoun and Nolan King offer up their highlights and lowlights from the 2021 PFL regular season.

Renan Ferreira blasts PFL’s ‘lack of transparency’ after Werdum fight not rebooked: ‘This is very shady’

A member of the PFL heavyweight roster has called into question the PFL’s “fishy” matchmaking methods.

[autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] has taken exception with PFL’s latest round of matchmaking.

Hours after the promotion Tuesday announced its second regular-season matchups for the heavyweight division, Ferreira (6-2) expressed his displeasure for his pairing against 2019 PFL heavyweight champion Ali Isaev and claims he was expecting a rematch against former UFC heavyweight [autotag]Fabricio Werdum[/autotag].

“All this is very shady,” Ferreira said in a written statement Tuesday provided by his team to MMA Junkie. “Ray Sefo told my management team that the Werdum rematch was the fight that made sense to do next. PFL had social media posts asking people if they wanted to see it and they said yes. Now we find out on social media I’m facing the last champion while Werdum faces (Brandon) Sayles.”

Ferreira and Werdum (24-9-1) competed against one another in their first regular-season bout at 2021 PFL 3 in early May. The finishing sequence garnered headlines after it ended in a controversial fashion. During a grappling exchange, Werdum was in the midst of a submission attempt and Ferreira made a hand motion some viewers interpreted as a tap.

The fight, and Werdum, however, continued on as the referee did not stop the fight. Ferreira ultimately escaped the submission and, moments later, earned a stoppage victory via TKO.

In the days that followed, Werdum challenged the outcome – and won his appeal. The result was overturned from a win to a no-contest by the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, causing buzz to grow about a potential rematch. To Ferreira, all signs pointed to a rematch, too – until he saw the fight announcement post on Tuesday.

“I find it interesting how all this is happening,” Ferreira said. “First, we have them interviewing Werdum after our fight but they didn’t interview me. They only showed the replay in slow motion that made it seem I tapped. After that, the commission changed the result of our fight over the weekend in a decision so fast a lot of people have questioned their procedure.”

[lawrence-related id=613813,613814]

Ferreira also questioned the PFL’s matchmaking system. The method for regular season matchmaking is unclear, as opposed to the tournament-style bracket that occurs in the playoffs.

“What’s their criteria?” Ferreira asked of the matchmaking. “We have no idea how the matchmaking works here but some things look kind of fishy.”

Despite the “surprise” opponent, Ferreira said his focus remains the same. That said, Ferreira vowed to face Werdum in the near future and expects a victory that will stand that time around.

“Isaev is a very good fighter and I knew we would cross paths eventually,” Ferreira said. “I’ll be ready for him and I’m gonna go in there to finish him so I move on in the tournament. They won’t be able to protect Werdum forever. I would be embarrassed to be in his place after all the shit he said after our fight. I’d be calling PFL to make the rematch happen. But he knows he’d get finished again, he doesn’t want anything to do with me”

Both Ferreira and Werdum will return to action on June 25 at 2021 PFL 6.

At the time of publication, PFL has not responded to MMA Junkie’s request for comment.

Commission overturns Fabricio Werdum’s KO loss to Renan Ferreira at 2021 PFL 3

Fabricio Werdum wanted justice for his controversial PFL debut, and now he’s got it.

[autotag]Fabricio Werdum[/autotag] wanted justice for his controversial PFL debut, and now he’s got it.

The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has overturned Werdum’s (24-9-1) knockout loss to [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] at 2021 PFL 3 this past Thursday to a no contest after reviewing the tape and concluding that the referee missed what should’ve been a fight-ending tap out by Ferreira (6-2).

ESPN first reported the change in result on Monday, and Werdum’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz of Dominance MMA, subsequently expressed his pleasure with a successful appeal in a statement on Twitter.

I want to thank the New Jersey Athletic Commission, Mr. Nick Lembo who worked all weekend on over turning Fabricio Werdum’s decision to a NO Contest from his last week at PFL. I also want to thank PFL for quickly providing all of the necessary evidence.

Werdum, a former UFC heavyweight champion, headlined 2021 PFL 3 at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlanta City, N.J., as part of the regular season kickoff event for the heavyweight division. He quickly took Ferreira down in the opening round of their matchup, then put his world-class ground game to use.

After transitioning into a triangle choke/armbar combination on bottom, Ferreira appeared to tap out. Referee Keith Peterson missed it, though, according to Werdum’s retelling of his experience, he released part of the pressure in expectation the fight would be stopped.

It wasn’t, however, and moments later Ferreira escaped the choke, postured up and reigned down massive hammerfists on Werdum to put his lights out and end the fight in a knockout.

https://www.instagram.com/p/COjjfFlHoLg

Werdum immediately protested the result, and vowed he felt a tap. Instant replay did reveal a tapping motion by Ferreira, but an argument can be made it’s not definitive. The commission apparently felt it was, though, and opted to change the result.

PFL has yet to comment on how the result change will impact its season standing. Ferreira was awarded six points for the first-round finish, but that has now been wiped from his record.

2021 PFL 3 video highlights: Controversy, dominance, upset rule wild night

Reacap the action from PFL 3, where Fabricio Werdum lost in controversial fashion, while Kayla Harrison picked up where she left off in 2019.

The PFL was back in action Thursday, and what a wild night of twists and turns it was – except for one defending champion picking up right where she left off.

In the main event, former UFC champ [autotag]Fabricio Werdum[/autotag] (24-10-1) made his promotional debut, which ended with a TKO loss to [autotag]Renan Ferreira[/autotag] (7-2) in controversial fashion after video replays showed referee Keith Peterson missed Ferreira tapping out while in a triangle choke. In the co-headliner, 2019 PFL champ [autotag]Kayla Harrison[/autotag] (9-0) needed only 83 seconds to take out [autotag]Mariana Morais[/autotag] (16-11). The night also featured a surprise upset for [autotag]Brandon Sayles[/autotag] (6-1), who choked out [autotag]Mohammed Usman[/autotag] (7-2) in the second round.

Check out the highlights from 2021 PFL 3, which featured fights in the heavyweight and women’s lightweight divisions, in the video above.
