Duncanville head coach Reginald Samples isn’t focused on Texas football three-peat

Duncanville football isn’t focused on titles.

Reginald Samples is not focused on winning another 6A Division I state championship in Texas. That, the high school football head coach said, would be a distraction.

It has been consecutive state championships for Samples and his Duncanville (Duncanville, Texas) program (ranked seventh in the nation in the USA TODAY Sports preseason Super 25 football rankings). Last year’s run to a historic title has Duncanville being talked about as among the best programs in not only Texas, but the nation.

And for Samples, this is potentially dangerous talk. In an interview with Bally Sports, he said the focus can’t be on three-in-a-row.

“It would be historic,” Samples told Bally Sports.

“You look around the state of Texas, a great football state – there’s some great coaches, some great programs. When you start winning three championships, it starts putting you closer to the elite program…but it’s not something I want to think about. Because when you’re thinking about those type of things, you forget about what it takes to get there.”

Duncanville finished last season 14-1. They are led by quarterback Keelon Russell, an Alabama commit who is a five-star recruit and the tenth-ranked player in the nation according to 247Sports.

Thoughts and notes from Friday’s DeSoto-Duncanville matchup

Friday night was a historic one for Duncanville. Reginald Samples hit 300 career wins as a head coach in Texas High School Football

Friday night was a historic one for Duncanville. Reginald Samples hit 300 career wins as a head coach in Texas High School Football. According to Greg Tepper of Dave Campbell’s TF, he is the 13th coach in the state’s history to accomplish the feat.

Duncanville and its players celebrated accordingly on DeSoto’s home turf after the 42-31 win, giving Samples a few Gatorade ice showers before the final whistle. But the game was not the easiest of the 300 on the resume.

DeSoto began the game up 14-0 early in the first quarter. After a Devyn Bobby interception on the one-yard line, four-star 2023 prospect Johntay Cook took it to the house for 99 yards. A nice move from Cook and blown coverage for the Panthers left one of the best receivers in the state with acres of space.

On the next drive, Oregon commit and wide receiver Stephon Johnson Jr. made it 14-0 to give the Eagles the early lead. From there, it was all Duncanville, especially on the ground.

Three-star offensive tackle Cameron Williams anchored the right side, leaving plenty of holes for running backs Malachi Medlock and Caden Durham. The two combined for 280 yards and four touchdowns on 36 carries.

Non-offensive touchdowns played a role as well. Lamodrick Spencer took an interception to the house after a tipped ball from 2024 defensive end Collin Simmons (more on him later). Davion Bluitt took a punt return back just at the stroke of halftime as well.

Duncanville only managed 44 passing yards on 18 attempts. Getting the job done with a solid run game was the clear plan for Samples’ staff on Friday.

After being down by two touchdowns in the second quarter, Duncanville scored 35 unanswered at ease. The celebration was on for Coach Samples, with banners and a rivalry win to show for it.

Coaches in attendance

It was a star-studded night of coaches in attendance at Eagle Stadium. Beginning with Texas, offensive line coach Kyle Flood and tight ends/special teams coach Jeff Banks took in the first half. The latter is known as one of the ace recruiters on staff and spent time with both coaching staffs on the field before the game.

A conference foe in Gary Patterson was there as well.

Oregon offensive line coach Alex Maribal wins the award of furthest traveled, though. He was there to see two Duck commits in offensive tackle Cameron Williams and wide receiver Stephon Johnson Jr.

Other players of note

Collin Simmons – ’24 DE Duncanville

The defensive MVP for Duncanville was defensive end Collin Simmons. The sophomore was disrupting the DeSoto passing game all night, living in the backfield. He ended up with two fumble recoveries and even tipped a pass at the line of scrimmage resulting in a pick-six.

247Sports has already rated Simmons as the No. 8 player from the state of Texas in the 2024 class. Marshall, Michigan State, and SMU are the only three to reach out so far. At this point, the clock is ticking on this recruitment blowing up.

Five-star Omari Abor even said Simmons will definitely end up being better than him.

Devyn Bobby – ’22 S DeSoto (Baylor)

Duncanville tried the passing game early on and was shut down by Devyn Bobby. He finished with one interception and should have had another the following defensive drive. Bobby was all over the field at free safety, not letting any Panther receivers behind him. And if they did, he would find a way to make a play on the ball.

Baylor currently has a commitment from Bobby. Texas has not offered the three-star but he was in Austin over the summer. Certainly an option to look at pending other 2022 defensive back results.

Remaining notes

I was excited to see two pass rushers tonight in Abor and DeSoto’s 2024 pass rusher Caleb Mitchell.

Abor did not suit up at all, dealing with a shoulder injury. He seemed to be in good spirits, though, cheering on Duncanville’s defensive performance throughout.

As for Mitchell, I assume an injury kept the sophomore off the field. Seeing him go up against Williams or 2022 Florida State commit Jaylen Early would have been a treat.

No. 2 Duncanville dominates in season opener without 2019 National Coach of the Year Reginald Samples

Duncanville dominated its season opener despite not having 2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples because of suspension.

Duncanville High School (Texas), ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25, dominated in its season opener on Friday night despite missing a key figure on the sideline.

2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples did not coach in the Panthers’ 41-3 win over South Oak Cliff because of a one-game suspension instituted by the University Interscholastic League. According to Greg Riddle of the Dallas Morning News, the UIL’s state executive committee found Duncanville violated the UIL rule regarding the employment of coaches by using a coach on staff that was not a full-time district employee. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Ramel Borner ran the show in place of Samples.

Under Samples’ guidance, Duncanville has reached consecutive Class 6A Division I championship games and has amassed a 29-2 record the last two seasons (14-1 in 2018, 15-1 in 2019). The Panthers were originally scheduled to open their 2020 season against Fort Worth Nolan last week, but the game was canceled because a Nolan football player tested positive for COVID-19.

Samples will be back on the sideline next week when Duncanville hosts No. 1 IMG Academy in Arlington on Saturday, Oct. 10 after it confirmed it still plans to travel to Texas for the game amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Plenty of talent will be on the field when the two teams take the field next weekend, as IMG Academy features three of the top 64 recruits in the class of 2021. Duncanville offensive lineman is ranked 43rd in the class of 2021 according to 247Sports.

2019-20 ALL-USA High School Football Coach of the Year: Reginald Samples, Duncanville

Duncanville football head coach Reginald Samples has been named the 2019 ALL-USA Football Coach of the Year.

USA TODAY High School Sports is naming the ALL-USA Coach of the Year, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, First and Second Team Offense and First and Second Team Defense for football.

The team was chosen by the USA TODAY Sports staff in consultation with high school coaches and recruiting analysts.

A Hail Mary to end last year’s championship game prevented Duncanville (Texas) from going 15-0 and winning the title.

After that heartbreak, the Panthers have worked through the Texas playoff gauntlet once again. After allowing more than seven points in just one regular season game, they flew threw the playoffs and are one win away from vengeance.

With another dominant season, Reginald Samples has been named the 2019 ALL-USA Football Coach of the Year.

In the 10 regular season games, Duncanville outscored opponents 444-33 — meaning the defense allowed an average of 3.3 points per game.

Through five playoff games, Duncanville has been winning by an average score of about 51-19.

South Grand Prairie, Flower Mound and Martin didn’t stand a chance. Southlake Carroll made it close in the fourth quarter, but Duncanville had control through. Rockwall’s explosive offense was stymied. All that’s left is a rematch of last year’s title game vs. North Shore.

It will be the biggest challenge thus far as quarterback Ja’Quinden Jackson will be out due to a torn ACL he suffered in the second quarter of the game vs. Rockwall. That didn’t slow Duncanville down in the semifinals, as the Panthers scored 21 points in the third quarter.

Duncanville has also managed this season without Kendrick Blackshire, the highly-anticipated transfer who was injured in the offseason.

If Samples can lead Duncanville to two consecutive seasons in which perfection was missed by a mere Hail Mary, it will be one of the great Texas football accomplishments.

This season, Samples has a chance to lead the team to its first championship since 1998. Getting to this point for the second straight year has shown how impressive a coach he is.
