Report: NFL considering limited-basis return for rookies before end of June

The NFL and NFLPA are working on a plan to let rookies and veterans in need of a physical return to team facilities on a limited basis.

The crop of 2020 rookies in the NFL was set to enter their first seasons in the league at a distinct disadvantage after being forced to miss out on rookie camps and OTAs due to the coronavirus pandemic that has shut down most of the sporting world. However, the NFL is now working on a way to at least get the rookies some distanced face time and familiarity with the team facilities ahead of training camp this summer.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the NFL and NFLPA are working to allow this type of limited-basis return sometime before June 26.

There is no word on what time of activities would be able to take place for the rookies or veterans in need of a physical, but it’s at least easy to assume that Washington Redskins players like Chase Young, Antonio Gibson, and Antonio Gandy-Golden would love to get a feeling for their new homes. When you then look at players who are expected to be in a position battle right off the bat, like Saahdiq Charles or Thaddeus Moss, getting familiar with their surroundings so they can hit the ground running this summer, could be of great benefit.

As we learn more information about the possibility of a limited return, we will keep you updated.

WATCH: Rivera and Washington coaches make return to Redskins Park

After 11 weeks away due to the coronavirus, Ron Rivera and some of the coaching staff have made a return to Redskins Park.

Ron Rivera and much of the Washington Redskins coaching staff made their long-awaited return to the Redskins training facilities on Friday, looking to dive deep into their offseason work.

In a video that was posted to the Redskins Twitter page, you can see Rivera entering the building fit with Washington gear, a Riverboat Ron facemask, and protective gloves. This was Rivera’s first time inside Redskins park in about 11 weeks, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

We are yet to know when the players will be able to return to the facilities to continue their offseason work, and the official start date for training camp is still up in the air.

According to Bill Callahan, the Redskins have looked great at practice

The head coach says that when fans can’t see, and media can’t watch, the Redskins have looked really good while practicing.

It’s hard for fans to judge a football team by anything other than what they see on the field on Sunday afternoons in the Fall.

Whatever happens on the practice field each week leading up to the games is relegated to quick-hitting tweets from beat reporters and short snippets of videos that rarely show anything other than stretching routines and individual drills.

For fans of the Washington Redskins, there’s little reason to believe that the team has shown anything other than complete ineptitude because that’s all they’ve seen on the field this season. However, coach Bill Callahan said recently that one of the most frustrating things he’s seen this season is that the team is struggling to carry over great play from practice into the games on Sunday.

“The translation is what really gets to me, taking plays from the grass to the game,” Callahan said, via NBC Sports Washington. “Nobody wants to hear it and I understand that. No one wants to hear how hard you practice and how hard you prepare because everyone does in the National Football League. You’ve got to come to the game and you’ve got to make plays. When that doesn’t translate, yeah there’s a disappointment.”

Maybe the Redskins do practice hard, and maybe they are world-beaters when playing at Redskins Park on any random weekday. Maybe Callahan is trying to paint a prettier picture than there really is.

What matters is that when the players take the field on Sundays, or Thursdays, or Mondays, it looks like they haven’t even practiced that week. That’s a problem and one that needs fixing right away.
