Redmond Walsh reflects on Tennessee career

Pitcher Redmond Walsh reflects on Tennessee career.

Notre Dame (40-16) defeated No. 1 Tennessee (57-9), 7-3, in the NCAA Tournament Knoxville Super Regional series finale Sunday at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Fighting Irish won the series, 2-1, and have advanced to the College World Series. The College World Series will take place June 16-27 at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

Following the game, graduate student pitcher Redmond Walsh discussed his career at Tennessee.

Walsh mentioned Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello “always has your back and it’s been that way from day one.”

“Me and Luc (Lipcius) were, I think, the last two kids to commit in our class and probably shouldn’t have even played here,” Walsh said. “That guy over there (Vitello) for some reason gave us a shot and we’ve just been able to be in big-time opportunities and kind of turn the program around. Just from that, I can’t thank him enough, the coaching staff enough, my teammates.

“I mean the years go by and the teams get closer and closer the better you are, and this year, man it’s going to be the hardest one to leave. Those guys are unbelievable. Everyone on that team is, pitching-wise, more talented than me, so it’s going to be fun to watch them pitch for many years to come. It was an unbelievable season and it’s a tough one to end, but it’s just one of those things where I’m excited to see where those guys go next year and what’s next for all of them.”

Redmond Walsh ties Todd Helton for Tennessee career saves record

Pitcher Redmond Walsh ties Todd Helton for the Tennessee career saves record.

No. 1 Tennessee (51-7) defeated No. 4 LSU, 5-2, Friday in the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Hoover, Alabama.

Redmond Walsh pitched 2.0 innings against the Tigers, earning his seventh save of the season. He recorded one strikeout, while surrendering one hit and one walk.

The save is Walsh’s 23rd during his career at Tennessee. He is tied with Todd Helton for most saves during a Tennessee career.

“That was a well earned one and I think he really kind of gutted through the thing because their
lineup’s really good, and the guys were on what he was throwing more so than the average
cat,” Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello said of Walsh. “The park was kind of playing big, for both teams, so he utilized the park and threw strikes. The one walk, he was right around the plate. He just lost the guy but gutted it out, is the best way I can say it, and good for him to have that individual deal. That’s something he’ll be able to remember and throw around the clubhouse when he returns to campus. For now, I’m sure he wants to ball again tomorrow.”

Redmond Walsh named to NCBWA Watch List

2020 Tennessee baseball.

KNOXVILLE — University of Tennessee redshirt junior relief pitcher Redmond Walsh was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Preseason Watch List Monday.

This year will be the 16th time that the NCBWA has given the award to the nation’s top reliever on the NCAA Division I level.

Walsh had a solid sophomore season in 2019 as he emerged as one of the Southeastern Conference’s top closers.

The left-handed pitcher recorded nine saves last season for the Volunteers, who went 40-21 and made the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005. Tennessee was 14-16 in the SEC in 2019.

Walsh, a graduate of nearby Alcoa High School, had four saves in SEC tilts last season, tying him for sixth in the league. He also had a pair of wins and recorded 48 strikeouts in 45.2 innings. Opponents hit a paltry .232 of him last year.

He had a 1.38 ERA in 2019, the lowest on Tennessee’s team. His career ERA is 1.56 and that’s the lowest of any of the Big Orange’s returning hurlers.

Walsh was named a second-team Preseason All-American last week by the NCBWA.
