The Detroit Red Wings (6-7-1) meet the Pittsburgh Penguins (6-9-2) Wednesday at PPG Paints Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (TNT/Max). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NHL odds around the Red Wings vs. Penguins odds and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Season series: Penguins lead 1-0

The Red Wings suffered a 4-0 home loss as +184 underdogs against the New York Rangers Saturday. Not a good follow-up as Detroit managed just a single goal in a 3-1 loss as +175 underdogs at Toronto Friday. The Red Wings are 2-5 in their last 7 games, while the Under has cashed in their last 4 games.

Detroit has had trouble scoring, posting 3 or fewer goals in 11 of 14 games to date, averaging just 2.4 goals per game (GPG), while allowing 3.1 GPG. The penalty kill ranks last in the NHL at 65.0%.

The Penguins were crushed 7-1 as +148 home underdogs Monday by the Dallas Stars. Pittsburgh is just 1-2-1 in the past 4 games, while the Under hast cashed in 4 of the past 6 outings.

Pittsburgh won at Detroit 6-3 Oct. 10 with backup G Joel Blomqvist in between the pipes against Reds Wings backup G Ville Husso. Blomqvist stopped 29 of 32 shows, while Husso was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 14 shots.

Red Wings at Penguins projected goalies

Cam Talbot (4-2-1, 2.40 GAA, .926 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Tristan Jarry (1-1-0, 5.47 GAA, .836 SV%)

Talbot is confirmed to face the Pens in the Steel City. He has been pretty good this November, going 2-1-0 with a 1.35 GAA and .950 SV% in 3 starts, allowing just 4 goals on 80 shots. He was called upon in relief of Husso in that first meeting Oct. 10, stopping 12 of 14 shots against the Pens.

Jarry is expected to make his first appearance since Oct. 16, when he was pulled after allowing 3 goals on 5 shots against Buffalo. He was loaned to the team’s AHL affiliate to iron out some issues. For now, Jarry is jockeying with Blomqvist and G Alex Nedeljkovic in a crowded Pittsburgh goalie room.

Red Wings at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Wings 5, Penguins 3

Moneyline

DETROIT (+120) is a solid play at plus-money against a stumbling Pittsburgh squad (-140).

The Red Wings have had trouble lighting the lamp lately, but that shouldn’t be a problem against a very giving Penguins goaltender, whether it’s Jarry or Nedeljkovic. The Pens have allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of the past 4 games, or 4.5 GPG in the 4-game span.

Puck line/Against the spread

Backing the Red Wings +1.5 (-210) will cost more than 2 times the potential return. That’s way too expensive and it’s not worth the risk if you’re looking for a little bit of insurance and you just can’t bring yourself to play Detroit straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

OVER 6.5 (-115) is the way to go.

Be careful as the Under is 4-2 in the past 6 games for the Penguins, but not only has Pittsburgh has allowed 4 or more goals in 3 of the past 4 outings, it has allowed 4 or more goals in 10 of the past 13 outings.

While the Under has hit in 4 in a row for the Red Wings, the Over cashed in the first meeting with the Pens. Facing Pittsburgh should be the elixir to cure Detroit’s scoring ills.

Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Detroit Red Wings (38-32-8) take on the Pittsburgh Penguins (36-30-12) Thursday at PPG Paints Arena. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Penguins odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings suffered a crushing defeat to the Washington Capitals at home by a 2-1 score Tuesday night. The win catapulted the Caps over the Red Wings and the Penguins for the final Wild Card spot. Detroit and Pittsburgh are tied at 84 points – 1 point behind Washington. The Wings are just 4-4-1-1 in their last 10.

Once left for dead after selling at the trade deadline, the Pens have gone on a run. They’re 6-1-2-1 in the last 10 games and are on a 5-game point streak. They fell 3-2 in overtime to the Toronto Maple Leafs Monday, which snapped a 4-game win streak. In 5 April games, C Sidney Crosby has 5 goals, 2 assists and is shooting a bonkers 62.5% with 8 shots on goal.

Red Wings at Penguins projected goalies

Alex Lyon (20-18-4, 2.96 GAA, .908 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Alex Nedeljkovic (16-6-7, 2.82 GAA, .907 SV%, 1 SO)

Lyon stopped 21 of 23 in the loss to the Caps Tuesday. Lyon has allowed 9 goals in his last 4 starts with a solid .933 SV%. He has 1 start against the Pens this year, and he allowed 5 goals on 37 shots in a 6-3 loss.

Nedeljkovic has been a catalyst for Pittsburgh’s run as he has taken the starter’s net from Tristan Jarry. Nedeljokvic is 4-0-1 in April with a 2.59 GAA and .910 SV%. He was between the pipes in the 3-2 OT loss against Toronto, stopping 20 of 23. Nedeljkovic faced his former team March 17 and stopped 25 of 28 in the 6-3 win over the Wings.

Red Wings at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 5, Red Wings 3

Moneyline

These teams have met twice this year, and each team won 6-3 on their home ice. You can take the Penguins -145, but I actually prefer the puck line here.

There is a prop bet I like as well. Crosby has fewer than 4 SOG in 5 straight games despite scoring 5 goals on 8 shots. He had 3 SOG in each game against the Red Wings. Take SIDNEY CROSBY UNDER 3.5 SHOTS (-165).

Puck line/Against the spread

The Pens are 6-2-2 in the last 10 against Detroit, and the last 5 Pens wins have been by multiple goals. In fact, 7 of the last 10 meetings ended with multi-goal finishes.

This game could end the other’s season with a regulation loss.

The Pens are 21-13-4 at home, and I’ll take the PENGUINS -1.5 (+170).

Over/Under

This total would be 6-0-1 in the last 7 meetings. The Wings are 4-6 O/U in their last 10, and the Pens are 5-5. There is a lot of push potential here, but this is still a cashable OVER 6 (-120).

Red Wings at Penguins projected goalies

Ville Husso (12-6-0, 2.72 GAA, .912 SV%) vs. Casey DeSmith (4-6-0, 2.83 GAA, .914 SV%)

In Husso’s last 2 starts he has 8 total goals while making 72 saves. That includes an overtime loss to the Capitals that saw Husso spending 65 minutes on the ice with an SV% of .905 in that loss.

In DeSmith’s last start Dec. 18 at Carolina he allowed 3 goals on 29 shots with an SV% of .897. The veteran has been a solid backup for the Penguins.

Red Wings at Penguins picks and predictions

Prediction

Penguins 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

LEAN PENGUINS -170.

The Penguins are simply the better team in this game. Neither team has shown that they are great, but the Penguins have performed better in a tougher division than the Red Wings.

Puck line/Against the spread

LEAN RED WINGS +1.5 (-150)

This game should be close as both teams could use a win here and should be playing hard. The Penguins should win, but the Red Wings will put up a fight and coming off a huge win before the break I expect them to keep this game close.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 6.5 (-120)

This is your best bet for this game. Both of these teams do have capable offenses, but in a game that should be a close battle I don’t see either team putting up a high amount of goals. This is a game that will see some scoring but won’t see either team eclipsing 3 goals.
