Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (75-81) and Toronto Blue Jays (87-69) open a 3-game set Friday at Rogers Centre. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET (MLB Network). Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Blue Jays lead 13-3

Red Sox DH J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead 2-run HR in the 8th inning of a 5-3 win at home vs. the Baltimore Orioles Thursday. The Orioles loss secured a wild-card berth for the Blue Jays.

Toronto is still trying to clinch home-field advantage in the AL wild-card series after an 8-3 loss at home vs. the New York Yankees Wednesday. Blue Jays LHP Tim Mayza recorded the loss after Yankees OF Aaron Judge hit his 61st HR of the season, tying former RF Roger Maris’ AL record, off him in the 7th inning.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

Money line

PASS.

Blue Jays (-205) money line is too expensive to bet when there’s better value on the RL.

Run line/Against the spread

BET BLUE JAYS -1.5 (+105).

When the Blue Jays win, they win by margin. Seven of Toronto’s last 8 wins have been by multiple runs. The Blue Jays have also dominated the Red Sox this season, winning the last 6 head-to-head meetings.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8.5 (-120).

Canadian-born Pivetta has not allowed more than 2 ER in either of his starts in Toronto this season. Couple that with Manoah’s dominance of the Red Sox and this game should stay under the total.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (42-33) and Toronto Blue Jays (42-32) wrap up a 3-game series at Rogers Centre on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Blue Jays lead series 7-2

The Red Sox are looking to salvage at least 1 game of this set, dropping the first 2 by a combined score of 13-7. The Over and Under has alternated in each of the past 5 contests for Boston.

The Blue Jays are aiming for their first 3-game win streak since an 8-0 run from May 24-June 2.

Red Sox at Blue Jays projected starters

RHP Nick Pivetta vs. RHP Alek Manoah

Pivetta (8-5, 3.25 ERA) makes his 16th start. He has a 1.11 WHIP, 2.9 BB/9 and 8.7 K/9 in 88 2/3 IP.

  • Has lasted at least 6 IP in 9 of the past 10 starts overall, winning 8 of the previous 9 outings.
  • Is 0-1 with a 7.27 ERA with a .294 opponent batting average in just 8 2/3 IP across 2 starts vs. TOR this season.

Manoah (9-2, 2.05 ERA) makes his 15th start. He has a 0.96 WHIP, 1.8 BB/9 and 8.1 K/9 in 87 2/3 IP.

  • Is 5-1 with a 2.15 ERA and .185 OBA across 46 IP over 7 home starts.
  • Allowed just 3 H in 7 scoreless IP in a win April 28 in his only outing vs. BOS this season.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

Money line

The BLUE JAYS (-170) look to complete the 3-game sweep with their ace on the bump. It won’t be easy, as the Red Sox (+135) counter with one of their best pitchers. Look for Toronto to do just enough behind Manoah in a well-pitched game.

Run line/Against the spread

The BLUE JAYS -1.5 (+122) are worth a small-unit play against Pivetta and the Red Sox +1.5 (-145). While the Boston right-hander has pitched well, and he eats plenty of innings, Toronto has had its way with him.

Over/Under

The UNDER 8.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this AL East battle.

The total is neutral for Pivetta, going 4-4-2 across his past 10 outings overall. However, for Manoah, the Under has cashed in 6 of his past 9 starts, and the Under also hit in his first appearance against the Red Sox April 28.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (40-32) host the Boston Red Sox (42-31) Monday for the start of their 3-game series at the Rogers Centre with the 1st pitch scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Boston has swept 2 consecutive opponents (the Detroit Tigers last week and Cleveland Guardians last weekend) and the Red Sox are 8-2 straight up (SU) in their last 10 games.

Toronto is just 3-7 SU in the last 10, which includes 3 straight series losses to the New York Yankees, at the Chicago White Sox and at the Milwaukee Brewers last weekend.

The Blue Jays lead the season series with the Red Sox 5-2 and have a plus-5 run differential in those meetings.

Red Sox at Blue Jays projected starters

RHP Connor Seabold vs. RHP Kevin Gausman

Seabold is making his 2022 debut for the Red Sox.

  • One career start in September 2021: A no-decision in Boston’s 9-8 win at the White Sox with 3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 1 HR, 2 BB and 0 K.
  • 2022 minor league stats: 5-1 with a 2.26 ERA (51 2/3 IP, 12 ER), 0.99 WHIP, 2.4 BB/9 and 8.9 K/9 in 11 starts for Boston’s Triple-A affiliate in Worcester.

Gausman is 5-6 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.5 BB/9 and 9.9 K/9 in 79 IP over 14 starts.

  • Last start: No-decision in Toronto’s 7-6 loss at the White Sox Tuesday with 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 H, 2 BB and 7 K.
  • 2022 vs. the Red Sox: 1-0 with a 0.64 ERA (14 IP, 1 ER), 11 H, 0 BB and 17 K in 2 starts.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 3

Money line

RISK 1 unit on the BLUE JAYS (-190) instead of betting 1 unit because of the price and Toronto’s 2-phase edge over the Red Sox (+155) in starting and hitting matchups.

Gausman’s pitching peripherals are much better than his basic numbers so there’s improvement expected for Gausman’s ERA and win-loss record. Also, the Blue Jays are 8-0 SU as home favorites between -150 and -200 vs. right-handed starters with an average final score of 6.25-3.00.

Toronto’s lineup is better than Boston’s vs. right-handed pitching across several advanced hitting metrics such as wRC+ (109-105), wOBA (.325-.320), ISO (.175-.153) and hard-hit rate (34.1-32.2%), per FanGraphs.

If your standard unit is $100 then “FLAT-BET” that on the BLUE JAYS (-190) to earn a $52.63 payout instead of betting $190 to win $100.

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

The Blue Jays -1.5 (+110) just isn’t a big enough payout considering how well the Red Sox +1.5 (-135) have played this month. Also, Toronto is just 10-21 RL as home favorites and Boston is 19-10 RL as underdogs.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 9.5 (-120) because the price suggests it’s the sharper play and there’s a suspicious line freeze in the betting market for the total.

More than 90% of the action is on the Over 9.5 (-105) per Pregame.com but the total hasn’t budged off the opener. Typically, oddsmakers adjust the lines according to the market’s behavior so this “line freeze” could be the sportsbooks’ way of daring bettors to bet the Over.

However, Toronto’s ML is my favorite look in this game, the Rogers Centre is a hitter-friendly ballpark and the Blue Jays are 19-16 O/U at home and 35-22-1 O/U vs. right-handed starters.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (8-11) wrap up their 4-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays (12-7) Thursday at Rogers Centre. First pitch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

The Blue Jays have a 4-2 lead in the season series. They took 2 of 3 games in Boston April 19-21 and captured 2 of the first 3 games in this homestand.

The Red Sox picked up a commanding 7-1 victory Wednesday as they rocked three separate Blue Jays relievers for 2 earned runs each. The victory snapped a four-game losing skid for Boston.

Toronto has 6 wins in its last 8 games and has yet to drop 2 games in a row this season. Wednesday’s loss marks the first time since April 13 that the Blue Jays weren’t tied for first or outright leading the AL East as they fell a half-game behind the New York Yankees.

Red Sox at Blue Jays projected starters

RHP Garrett Whitlock vs. RHP Alek Manoah

Whitlock (1-0, 0.66 ERA) makes his 2nd start and 6th appearance. He has allowed just 1 ER on 5 H and 2 BB with 18 K through 13 2/3 IP.

  • Pitched 4 scoreless innings with just 1 hit and 7 strikeouts at the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday in his first career start.
  • Appeared in 46 games as a reliever last year in his rookie season going 8-4 with a 1.96 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9 and 9.9 K/9 across 73 1/3 IP.
  • Faced the Blue Jays 6 times in 2021 and allowed just 1 ER on 9 H and 1 BB with 8 K across 8 2/3 IP.

Manoah (3-0, 2.00 ERA) makes his 4th start. He has a 1.00 WHIP, 3.0 BB/9 and 9.0 K/9 through 18 IP.

  • Has tossed exactly 6 IP in all three of his starts, most recently giving up 2 ER to the Houston Astros Saturday on 7 H with 5 K.
  • Has benefited from a below-average .222 BABIP through his first 3 outings.
  • Was 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA across 2 starts versus the Red Sox last year in his rookie season.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Toronto 3, Boston 2

Money line

This should be a very tight affair with two pitchers who have performed extremely well to start the season — I wouldn’t get carried away with any wager here.

However, the Blue Jays are the better side at the plate and have the starter that is more likely to stretch deeper into the game. They should bounce back from Wednesday’s embarrassing late-game collapse and pick up a tight victory. Consider backing the BLUE JAYS (-145).

Run line/Against the spread

PASS.

The -180 tag on the Red Sox here is a little too steep for a single run of insurance. Just two of Toronto’s four victories against Boston have been by a single run, the other two were 5 and 4 run differences.

I’d love to be able to back the Jays to win by 2 or more runs at plus-money value but it’s hard to get behind the notion of them getting to Whitlock and if the bullpen can keep them off balance it might be a stretch to cover the run line.

Over/Under

Unders have ruled the league through the opening weeks, the dome remaining closed at Rogers Centre during a chilly April and with two starting pitchers on the mound who have been lights out in the early going I’m backing the UNDER 7.5 (-140).

Three of the first six meetings between these sides have fallen under that number, and two others have hit just 8 runs.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (12-6) host the Boston Red Sox (7-11) in the third of their 4-game series at Rogers Centre. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Toronto took the first two games of this series, first 6-2 Monday then 6-5 in extra innings Tuesday.

Boston has lost 4 in a row and 6 of the last 7 games while the Blue Jays have won 6 of the last 7.

Season series: Toronto leads 4-1 and the Blue Jays have outscored the Red Sox 23-11 this season.

Red Sox at Blue Jays projected starters

RHP Michael Wacha vs. RHP Ross Stripling

Wacha (1-0, 1.88 ERA) won 4-3 Friday at the Tampa Bay Rays, throwing 5 IP, allowing 2 ER on 3 H and 2 BB with 2 K.

  • 2021 vs. the Blue Jays: 0-1 with a 5.73 ERA (11 IP, 7 ER), 11 H, 2 BB and 10 K across 2 starts and 1 relief appearance.
  • vs. Blue Jays on the current roster: 3.20 FIP with a .306 expected batting average (xBA), .348 expected wOBA (xwOBA), .478 expected slugging percentage (xSLG), 24.2 K% and 89.7 mph exit velocity (EV) in 33 plate appearances (PA).

Stripling (0-0, 4.50 ERA) got a no-decision in Toronto’s 4-3 win Friday at the Houston Astros. He went 4 IP, surrendering 3 ER on 5 H and 1 BB with 2 K.

  • 2021 vs. the Red Sox: 0-2 with a 14.90 ERA (9 2/3 IP, 16 ER), 17 H, 4 BB and 9 K in 3 starts.
  • vs. Red Sox on the current roster: 5.77 FIP with a .275 xBA, .366 xwOBA, .532 xSLG, 25.3 K% and 89.7 mph EV in 95 PA.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 4

Money line

PASS with a heavy “lean” toward the Red Sox (+120) because I like their first 5-inning RL as my favorite wager in this game so Boston should win this contest outright.

However, the Red Sox’s hitting and relief pitching have struggled out the gate whereas the Blue Jays (-145) are raking at the plate and their bullpen is slightly better by xFIP and ERA.

Run line/Against the spread

BET 1 unit on the RED SOX +0.5 FIRST 5-INNING RUN LINE (-120) because Wacha’s pitching peripherals versus the Blue Jays are much more impressive than Stripling’s against Boston. Also, Wacha hasn’t been down after the 5th inning in any of his 3 starts in 2022.

Over/Under

Slight LEAN to the OVER 8.5 (-120) because both starters are bottom-of-the-rotation guys and both lineups have mashers. Furthermore, these teams are a combined 6-14 O/U versus division opponents in 2022.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB expert picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (7-9) continue their road trip Monday when they go north of the border to start a 4-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays (10-6). First pitch at the Rogers Centre is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Toronto leads the season series 2-1 and outscored the Red Sox 11-4 in last week’s games in Boston.

Boston lost the rubber match of a 3-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays Sunday 5-2 . Toronto had its 4-game winning streak snapped Sunday with an 8-7 extra-inning loss at the Houston Astros.

The Blue Jays are 4-0-1 overall in their 5 series this season.

Red Sox at Blue Jays: Projected starters

RHP Nathan Eovaldi vs. RHP Jose Berrios

Eovaldi (1-0, 3.68 ERA) got a no-decision in Boston’s 2-1 win over Toronto Tuesday, throwing 4 2/3 IP with 1 ER, 7 H, 1 BB and 6 K.

  • vs. Blue Jays on the current roster: 6.01 FIP with a .284 expected batting average (xBA), .367 expected wOBA (xwOBA), .450 expected slugging percentage (xSLG), 20.8 K% and 91.6 mph exit velocity (EV) in 96 plate appearances (PA).

Berrios (1-0, 6.35 ERA) picked up the win in Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over Boston, going 6 IP with 8 H, 1 BB and 6 K.

  • vs. Red Sox on the current roster: 3.38 FIP with a .239 xBA, .310 xwOBA, .422 xSLG, 23.6 K% and 89.0 mph EV in 123 PA.

Red Sox at Blue Jays picks and predictions

Prediction

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 3

Money line

TAKE the BLUE JAYS (-135) because they have an edge in 2 of the 3 most important phases of baseball: Starting pitching and hitting.

The bullpens cancel each other out, but Berrios has stronger pitching peripherals versus the Red Sox (+110) than Eovaldi does against Toronto. That held true when these guys faced Monday’s opponent last week.

Furthermore, Eovaldi has struggled in previous visits to Toronto. Eovaldi is 0-2 in 3 career starts at the Rogers Centre with an 8.04 ERA (15 2/3 IP, 14 ER), 21 H, 6 BB and 18 K.

Also, Toronto’s hitting is raking while Boston’s hasn’t gotten going yet. The Blue Jays rank 10th or better in wRC+, wOBA, hard-hit rate and EV and hit better at home whereas the Red Sox rank 22nd or worse in wRC+, wOBA and WAR, per FanGraphs.

Run line/Against the spread

LEAN to the BLUE JAYS -1.5 (+155) since their lineup is a lot more locked in at the moment than Boston’s and Toronto’s RL has a fat enough payout.

Both bullpens got a lot of work Sunday so I’m not confident Toronto’s relief pitching can cover the RL. Also, 2 of the 3 Red Sox-Blue Jays meetings last week were decided by 1 run.

Over/Under

LEAN to the OVER 7.5 (-130) because of both bullpens’ aforementioned fatigue, both lineups have sluggers, neither starters’ peripherals are impressive and the Over has cashed in 6 of the last 8 Red Sox-Blue Jays meetings in Toronto.

However, it’s only a LEAN to the OVER 7.5 (-130) because Toronto’s ML is my favorite bet in this game.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Sunday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (65-48) and Toronto Blue Jays (59-50) close out a four-game AL East series Sunday. First pitch at Rogers Centre is slated for 1:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Garrett Richards is the projected starting pitcher for the Red Sox. Richards is 6-7 with a 5.21 ERA, 1.66 WHIP, 7.3 K/9, and 4.0 BB/9 in 105 1/3 IP over 21 starts.

  • Has a shaky line against current Toronto batters with a .942 OPS allowed and a 1.5-to-1 K/BB ratio.
  • Owns a 6.66 ERA and 1.83 WHIP over his last 51 1/3 IP. He’s facing the Blue Jays for the fourth time over that stretch and a third time since the All-Star break, and has a 6.15 ERA in five starts overall against Toronto in 2021.

LHP Hyun Jin Ryu is the projected starter for the Blue Jays. He is 11-5 with a 3.22 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 7.5 K/9, and 1.8 BB/9 in 123 IP over 21 starts.

  • Is coming off strong back-to-back outings and has logged a 1.85 ERA since the All-Star break. That span includes a July 29 start that saw Ryu shut out the Sox for 6 innings.
  • Current Boston bats own a .575 OPS and .126 isolated power against him.

Prediction

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

Money line (ML)

Boston is 2-7 on a current road trip that has included trips to Tampa Bay and Detroit, and the Red Sox have been passed by the Rays as leaders in a talented AL East.

Meanwhile, Toronto has been at home all week – truly at home in Ontario, Canada, and not Dunedin, Fla., or Buffalo, N.Y. – and the Blue Jays have been making their own move in the standings. They are 8-2 on a home stand that kicked off July 30.

These AL East foes are coming off a pitcher’s duel double dip. They split a pair of Saturday games that saw a total of 4 runs scored.

The Jays owned a second-half OPS of .852 before Saturday’s double-header. With this pitching matchup and with Boston’s bullpen being much more in recent-use fatigue territory, Toronto is worth being a big favorite on Sunday.

… Up to about a -120 price, but this line is too much. PASS.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

The price on Toronto burying a road-weary Boston club is really attractive here: BACK THE BLUE JAYS -1.5 (-108).

A very good Boston offense has more than its fair share of troubles against ground-ball types, and Ryu leans that way. Before Saturday, the Blue Jays’ previous 21 winswere by 2 or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

The run-scoring for both these clubs – Boston at 4.81  runs per game, Toronto at 5.16 RPG – isn’t fully supported by peripheral numbers.

A roof-open game at Rogers Centre (a strong likelihood) would add in some high humidity and an outward breeze.

BACK THE OVER 9.5 (+105).

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays Game 1 odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Saturday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays Game 1 odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (64-47) and Toronto Blue Jays (58-49) will toil in two on Saturday. The day-night doubleheader at Rogers Centre opens with Game 1 at 3:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Nick Pivetta is the projected starting pitcher for the Red Sox. Pivetta is 8-5 with a 4.57 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, 10.1 K/9, and 3.9 BB/9 in 112 1/3 IP over 21 starts.

  • Has allowed an aggregate 1.023 OPS and .258 isolated power against current Toronto batters.
  • Owns a 3.41 ERA through 10 road games.
  • Has logged a 6.75 ERA over his last four starts, two of which came against the Blue Jays.

LHP Robbie Ray is the projected starter for the Blue Jays. He is 9-5 with a 3.04 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 11.1 K/9, and 2.4 BB/9 in 124 1/3 IP over 21 starts.

  • Has clocked a 2.66 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break.
  • Current Boston bats own an .863 OPS and .306 ISO against him.

Prediction

Blue Jays 4, Red Sox 2

Money line (ML)

Boston is 1-6 on a current road trip that has included trips to Tampa Bay and Detroit, and the Red Sox have been leapfrogged by the Rays as leaders in a talented AL East.

Meanwhile, Toronto has been at home all week – truly at home in Ontario, Canada, and not Dunedin, Fla., or Buffalo, N.Y. – and the Blue Jays been making their own move in the standings. They are 7-1 on a home stand that kicked off July 30.

The Jays took Friday’s lid-lifter, 12-4, and they now own an .852 OPS in the second half.

Toronto is the “lean” for Saturday’s opener, but PASS unless you can get a price of -160 or better.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

With decent pitching on the bump and a 7-inning game as the format, a high-scoring game wouldn’t appear as likely. However, it didn’t on Friday either when 16 total runs were scored.

The price on Toronto is attractive: BACK THE BLUE JAYS 1.5 (+122).

Over/Under (O/U)

Struggling Boston bats (.699 OPS last 15 games), Ray, and the best end of the Toronto ‘pen if the home nine have this one tumbling out to a 5-6, maybe 7-run game with high probability. There’s some value at plus money on the lower side of things.

BACK THE UNDER 6.5 (+105).

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Friday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Boston Red Sox (64-46) and Toronto Blue Jays (57-49) tangle Friday night in the opener of a four-game series at Rogers Centre. First pitch is slated for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze the lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

RHP Nathan Eovaldi is the projected starting pitcher for the Red Sox. The veteran is 9-6 with a 3.71 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, 8.9 K/9, and 1.6 BB/9 in 121 1/3 IP in 21 starts.

  • Has scuffled in his recent road turns with a 6.30 ERA in his last four starts away from Fenway.
  • Has held current Toronto bats to an aggregate .578 OPS.

RHP Alek Manoah is the projected starter for the Blue Jays. Manoah has started nine games this season. The rookie fireballer is 3-1 with a 2.47 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, 10.7 K/9, and 3.0 BB/9 in 47 1/3 IP.

  • Is coming off 7 scoreless innings in his last start, which was his first since July 9.
  • Logged 6 innings of 1-run ball June 14 against the Red Sox.

Prediction

Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 4

Money line (ML)

Boston is 1-5 on a road trip that has included trips to Tampa Bay and Detroit, and the Red Sox have been leapfrogged by the Rays as leaders in a talented AL East.

Meanwhile, Toronto has been at home all week – truly at home in Ontario, Canada, and not Dunedin, Fla., or Buffalo, N.Y. – and they’ve been making hay. They are 6-1 on a home stand that kicked off July 30.

These two clubs have met 15 times this season. Boston holds a 9-6 edge in the series despite being a minus-20 in run differential.

On Friday look for the Jays to add to that run differential. Manoah gives an edge to the home nine, and the Crimson Hose could well be a road-weary bunch in for a long weekend.

BACK THE BLUE JAYS (-155).

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

A high-scoring game wouldn’t appear as probable, and the game could lay out as Boston batting nine times against Toronto’s eight. However, the price here is attractive and worth consideration, perhaps in a combo play with the above wager.

TAKE TORONTO -1.5 (+133)

Over/Under (O/U)

Will respect the cross signals underpinning this matchup, and the public backing the over. PASS.

Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays odds and lines, with MLB picks and predictions.

The Toronto Blue Jays (48-43) host the Boston Red Sox (57-38) Tuesday at their temporary home of Sahlen Field in Buffalo, N.Y., for the second game of their three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:07 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook‘s lines around the Red Sox vs. Blue Jays odds with MLB picks and predictions.

Season series: Red Sox lead 6-4.

RHP Garrett Richards makes his 19th start for the Red Sox. He is 5-5 with a 4.91 ERA (91 2/3 IP, 50 ER), 1.68 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9 and 7.2 K/9 this year.

  • Last outing: Win, 11-5, with 5 IP, 3 ER, 7 H, 1 BB and 4 K against the Philadelphia Phillies July 9.
  • Richards is 1-1 against Toronto with a 5.40 ERA (16 2/3 IP, 10 ER), 22 H, 12 BB and 10 K over three starts this season.
    • vs. Blue Jays on the current roster: 96 at-bats with a .302/.414/.385 slash line, 20/17 K/BB, 0 HR and 9 RBIs.

RHP Thomas Hatch makes his first start of the season for the Blue Jays. He was 3-1 with a 2.73 ERA (26 1/3 IP, 8 ER), 1.18 WHIP, 4.4 BB/9 and 7.9 K/9 across one start and 16 relief appearances last season.

  • Hatch was 1-1 in three relief appearances against the Red Sox last season with a stat line of 4 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, 3 BB and 6 K.

Red Sox at Blue Jays odds, lines, picks and prediction

MLB odds courtesy of BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports for a full list. Odds last updated at 2:30 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Red Sox +110 (bet $100 to win $110) | Blue Jays -135 (bet $135 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Red Sox +1.5 (-160) | Blue Jays -1.5 (+135)
  • Over/Under: 11.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Prediction

Blue Jays 9, Red Sox 6

Money line (ML)

“LEAN” to the BLUE JAYS (-135) for a half unit because the presumed “sharp” money is on Toronto while the “public” is backing Boston and Richards hasn’t looked good in his three previous starts against the Blue Jays.

More than 80% of the cash wagered is on Toronto’s money line whereas nearly 90% of the bets placed are on the Red Sox, according to Pregame.com. Typically, it’s more profitable to follow the money in sports betting, especially when it’s flowing in the opposite direction as the public.

Furthermore, in Richards’ three starts against the Blue Jays this season, his exit velocity has clocked in at 95.6, 95.7 and 94.1 mph. To put that into perspective, his average exit velocity on the season is 91.7 mph and the MLB average is 88.4 mph.

FANTASY BASEBALL: Serious about winning your league? Sign up for BaseballHQ.com to dominate the competition. Subscribe now!

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

PASS because I only “lean” to Toronto outright and don’t want to risk it with the Blue Jays -1.5 (+135).

Also, Boston has the fourth-highest cover rate as a road underdog at 21-6 ATS and Toronto is just 15-16 ATS as a home favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

“LEAN” to the OVER 11.5 (-105) for a half unit only because we are getting the worst of the number since the market has steamed the total up from the 10.5-run opener.

However, Boston is 10-6 O/U when Richards takes the mound, Toronto’s temporary home of Sahlen Field ranks fourth by runs scored based on park factors and the Over cashed in five of the past seven Red Sox-Blue Jays meetings.
