Rockstar is absorbing the GTA and Red Dead mod group CFX

The popular Red Dead Redemption and GTA mod platform CFX is now officially part of Rockstar games

The popular Red Dead Redemption and GTA mod platform CFX is now officially part of Rockstar games, the sandbox game maker announced in a statement. The moves comes after roughly a decade of CFX building and hosting an extensive network of servers for players to enjoy customized versions of Rockstar’s most popular games, including playing Red Dead Redemption 2 in multiplayer mode and teaming up for roleplaying in GTA 5

“Over the past few years, we’ve watched with excitement as Rockstar’s creative community have found new ways to expand the possibilities of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2, particularly through the creation of dedicated roleplay servers,” Rockstar said in a statement. “As a way to further support those efforts, we recently expanded our policy on mods to officially include those made by the roleplay creative community.”

“By partnering with the Cfx.re team, we will help them find new ways to support this incredible community and improve the services they provide to their developers and players.”

So the short version is that you can expect to see official mod support and probably roleplaying servers in GTA Online in the coming months and GTA 6, whenever it launches (probably in 2024). Bethesda took a somewhat similar approach with Skyrim’s anniversary edition. While the team didn’t absorb any of the RPG’s creator groups, they did turn some of the most popular mods into official parts of the game.

Take-Two CEO defends Red Dead Redemption port price

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the Red Dead Redemption price on Switch and PS4 is excellent value for the money

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick says the Red Dead Redemption price on Switch and PS4 is excellent value for the money and a “commercially accurate” price for the 13-year old game. Zelnick made the comment during Take-Two’s recent earnings call when IGN asked why Take-Two and Rockstar decided to price the game at nearly the price of a brand-new release.

“That’s just what we believe is the commercially accurate price for it,” Zelnick said. “[Red Dead] was a great standalone game in its own right when it was originally released, so we feel like it’s a great bundle for the first time, and certainly a great value for consumers.”

Zelnick didn’t expand on what “commercially accurate” means to him or who decides the accuracy. The Switch and PS4 version includes the Undead Nightmare DLC, but no changes or enhancements. The open-world game is available on the Xbox store for $29.99 and its DLC for $9.99, and you can get a few solid graphics enhancements if play on Xbox Series X|S via backwards compatibility – a visually superior version for $10 less.

You can buy the PS3 version from Amazon for less than $20 and get the Game of the Year edition in supposedly brand-new condition for $16 from eBay. Meanwhile, other popular PS3 games sell for $19.99 on Switch, including Okami and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Skyrim on Switch costs $59.99, but it includes multiple expansions plus Nintendo-specific add-ons and features. It also goes on sale regularly.

So who can say what commercially accurate actually means. What we can say is that Red Dead Redemption on Switch and PS4 launches digitally on Aug. 17, 2023, and physically later in the fall.

Rockstar announces Red Dead Redemption for Switch, PS4

It might not be the long-rumored Red Dead Redemption remake, but Rockstar is bringing the original Red Dead to Switch and PS4

It might not be the long-rumored Red Dead Redemption remake, but Rockstar announced it’s bringing the original Red Dead to Switch and PS4. The news comes a year after rumors suggested Rockstar scrapped a full Red Dead remaster to re-allocate resources to Grand Theft Auto 6.

Red Dead Redemption for Switch and Sony’s last-gen console will launch on Oct. 12, 2023, and it comes bundled with the Undead Nightmare expansion for $49.99.

Rockstar is releasing the game digitally on Aug. 17, 2023. There’s no word of a PC port, though – just a note that you can play the original via the Microsoft Store on Windows.

This is a straight-up port of the 2010 open-world game, so don’t expect any improvements. Whether Red Dead on PS5 will upscale the game, as Xbox Series X|S do when you play the game via Xbox 360 backwards compatibility, Rockstar didn’t say.

Red Dead Redemption is technically a sequel to its sequel. It follows John Marston, an infamous outlaw who the federal government forcibly recruits to track down his erstwhile associates. It’s a cruel task, but Marston isn’t entirely a heartless mercenary. His wife is held as collateral to make sure everyone plays nice.

Undead Nightmare retells the game with a splash of zombie horror. Instead of John trying to save his wife from the government, he’s desperate to find a cure for the zombie plague turning the West into a bloody wasteland.

The original Red Dead sold 23 million copies over 11 years and spurred Rockstar to make Red Dead Redemption 2, a prequel that tells the story of Marston’s former comrades – which also sold millions of copies and earned several award nominations.

Jack Black wants a Red Dead Redemption movie or TV series next

Mario movie star Jack Black hoped someone makes a Red Dead Redemption movie, as video game adaptations prove more popular than ever

Mario movie star Jack Black hoped someone makes a Red Dead Redemption movie, as video game adaptations prove more popular than ever. Black, who voices Bowser in Nintendo and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, made the comments during an interview with the BBC, where he said he expects more video game storytelling in TV and cinema in the coming years.

“I’m a fan of adaptations, when done right,” Black said. “The Last of Us [HBO] was fantastic. It’s going to win all the awards. They used the video game almost like a storyboard and I was like, ‘Whoa, this looks just the same.’ And there are some great games that have yet to be explored in television or film. Maybe there’s going to be a Red Dead Redemption movie? There should be, because I think that [has] just as good or [an] even better story than The Last of Us.”

Red Dead Redemption and its prequel-sequel Red Dead Redemption 2 follow an outlaw gang of cowboys, misfits, and criminals at the turn of the 20th century as they try carving a place for themselves in a society where greed and modernization at all costs take priority over human lives. Red Dead 2 won nearly two dozen awards when it released in 2018 and even earned a BAFTA nomination for best game.

Rockstar turned down the chance to make a Grand Theft Auto movie in the early 2000s, but that was a different era for film and certainly for television. Now, Black thinks games with strong stories or recognizable characters have a much stronger chance of successfully making the jump.

“The TV and film industries seem to be seeing a little bit of shrinkage,” Black said. “It will be interesting to see what happens to the entertainment industry over the next 20 to 30 years but I think we will be seeing more storytelling from the gaming universe.”

‘I couldn’t get on the damn horse’: John Carpenter on playing Red Dead Redemption

The legendary director of Halloween, They Live, and Escape from New York had some peculiar troubles with Red Dead Redemption.

Red Dead Redemption is without question one of the greatest cowboy games ever, but legendary filmmaker John Carpenter didn’t stick with it for long.

Best known for directing classic movies like Halloween, Escape from New York and The Thing, most people have likely seen one of Carpenter’s films. Lately, though, he’s mostly enjoying some much-deserved downtime. During a career retrospective interview with The New Yorker, Carpenter briefly spoke about how he spends many hours playing video games these days. His love for modern blockbusters like Horizon Zero Dawn and Halo Infinite knows no bounds, although it seems that adoration doesn’t extend to Red Dead Redemption — and you’d never guess why.

“I couldn’t get on the damn horse,” Carpenter said via The New Yorker. “I gave up. It was too hard.”

It’s not a matter of skill, either. Carpenter is by no means some newbie with this medium.

“I’m pretty good after all the years I’ve played. But with that one, I was terrible,” Carpenter continues via The New Yorker. “The controls weren’t intuitive, at least for me. But I guess everybody else had a good time. It was a popular game.”

Rockstar Games better be taking this into consideration for GTA 6.

Red Dead Online receives heartfelt goodbye from fans

The trending hashtag #RedDeadFuneral highlights how many people are upset that there won’t be more updates.

Many thought Red Dead Online would be a phenomenon prior to release. After all, Rockstar had millions of people tearing up Los Santos daily in GTA Online, so putting that familiar formula in the old west seemed like it would be an instant hit.

Unfortunately, that didn’t happen.

Exactly one year ago, Red Dead Online received its last big update. Of course, nobody knew it at the time — but Rockstar recently announced that it isn’t patching in more content. Nothing significant, anyway.

Fans haven’t been happy about Rockstar’s treatment of the multiplayer open-world cowboy sim for a while. However, their disappointment is on display like never before with the trending hashtag #RedDeadFuneral. It’s primarily full of people vocally condemning Rockstar while simultaneously overflowing with those sharing precious memories. It’s somewhat touching, if not also deeply sad. Red Dead Online clearly meant a lot to many, and while it isn’t shutting down — the reactions below show everyone is moving on.

Rockstar has no plans for more major Red Dead Online updates

The studio is shifting resources around as GTA 6 development ramps up.

It sounds like Red Dead Online isn’t getting another significant content update anytime soon.

On Thursday, Rockstar made an announcement regarding the future of several internal projects. Specifically, the studio is shifting many Red Dead Online resources towards GTA 6.

“Over the past few years, we have been steadily moving more development resources towards the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,” Rockstar said. “Understanding more than ever the need to exceed players’ expectations and for this next entry to be the best it can possibly be – and as a result, we are in the process of making some changes to how we support Red Dead Online.”

Rockstar’s plan with Red Dead Online going forward mostly involves improving already-existing content.

“We plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years,” Rockstar continues. “We will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond.”

While the studio didn’t totally rule out another major update, it seems unlikely. None of this is terribly surprising, either. For months, Red Dead Online fans have been screaming about the lack of content. Take-Two has ‘heard the frustration,’ but nothing came of that outcry.

Earlier this week, a report claimed that GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters were in the works, but both projects were scrapped so that Rockstar could focus on GTA 6.

Rockstar reportedly scraps Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 remasters to focus on GTA 6

Insiders claim that development priorities shifted following the GTA Trilogy’s disastrous reception.

Remasters of Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 were reportedly in the works, but Rockstar Games shelved both projects to focus on GTA 6. Mainly due to the GTA Trilogy‘s overwhelmingly negative reception.

On Monday, reliable industry insider Tez2 made a tweet detailing the shift in focus at Rockstar Games.

“As per a reliable source with clear accuracy on Rockstar plans, remasters of GTA 4 [and] Red Dead Redemption were on the table a few years ago, but Rockstar chose not to proceed with the projects in mind,” Tez said on Twitter. “The poor reception of the Trilogy DE might be a reason behind that decision.”

[mm-video type=video id=01fy6szkw7j3hdqz3aec playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fy6szkw7j3hdqz3aec/01fy6szkw7j3hdqz3aec-da5d454bda0bc7e7f082543f087fb1d3.jpg]

A report by Kotaku confirms these rumors. Apparently, one source told the publication that GTA 4 and Red Dead Redemption remasters are not “out of scope,” meaning Rockstar Games could finish either project later. However, GTA 6 is the studio’s priority for now. Earlier this year, Rockstar Games stated that GTA 6 development was “well underway,” and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said it’ll come out when the studio is ready.

It’s no surprise that GTA Trilogy‘s infamous launch could impact other re-releases. Patches are still slowly coming out, but the steady stream of fixes is slowing down somewhat. It’s rather unfortunate since there’s no easy means of playing Red Dead Redemption and GTA 4 outside of backward compatibility via Xbox Series X|S.
