Gators drop again in USA TODAY Sports’ post-season re-rank

The Florida Gators continue to drop in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after their loss to Florida State

The Florida Gators dropped eight more spots in USA TODAY Sports’s post-regular season re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 56, over 35 spots behind their rival and final opponent of the regular season, Florida State.

The Gators had an up-and-down first half of the season. They came out of the gate swinging with an upset win over the defending Pac-12 champion Utah Utes in [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first game as Florida’s head coach. They went from unranked to No. 19 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after the victory.

They then lost to Kentucky and barely got a win over in-state rival USF, leaving them out of the top 25 entirely. Their close loss to Tennessee paired with their win over Eastern Washington caused expectations to stabilize.

The Gators seemed to have found their form after a great month that saw the Gators play well in stretches of their losses to LSU and Georgia, and play very well in victories over Texas A&M and South Carolina. They then seemed to collapse in their loss against Vanderbilt. Injuries, penalties, and inconsistencies all played a part in their 31-24 loss to the Commodores. While a drastically better team this season, Vanderbilt just doesn’t have the players that Florida does, leaving most fans in shock over the result.

The Gators followed up the Vanderbilt loss with an instant classic edition of the Sunshine State Showdown against rival Florida State. After taking a 24-21 lead into the half, the Gators allowed Florida State to dominate the game in the third quarter. A back-and-forth fourth quarter ultimately saw the Seminoles win their first game in the series since 2017.

The Gators finish the season 6-6 and are awaiting their bowl assignment. The College Football Playoffs Selection Show will announce the four playoff teams on Sunday, followed by the New Year’s Six bowl game participants. After that, the individual bowl games will announce their participants throughout Sunday afternoon.

CBS Sports’ Week 12 re-rank sees Gators take steep fall

The Florida Gators drop in the latest CBS Sports’ full ranking of all FBS teams after losing to Vanderbilt. They are 9th in the SEC.

The latest CBS Sports rankings saw Florida football take a significant fall. It is currently the No. 49 team in the nation and the No. 9 team in the SEC — a drop of 19 spots overall and three spots in the SEC.

The Gators are coming off a disappointing 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt, putting them at 6-5, with all five of their losses coming in SEC play. The Gators looked horrendous in that game as injuries, penalties, and inconsistent play all played a part in the loss.

Offensively, Florida couldn’t establish its dominant run game, recording 45 total rush yards, with 30 of those yards coming on two runs. Defensively, penalties reared their ugly head. Vanderbilt even scored a touchdown on a muffed punt that went into the end zone. Overall, not a great day at the office.

Florida’s final regular season game will be played on the road when they take a short trip to Tallahassee to take on Florida State in a special Black Friday edition of the Sunshine State Showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST and the game will be broadcast on ABC Sports.

Where does Florida football stand in The Athletic’s 131-team re-rank?

Losing to Vanderbilt didn’t help Florida move in the right direction in the latest 131-team college football re-rank from the Athletic.

As the college football season draws to a close, it has become increasingly clear that the Florida Gators will not finish ranked in the top 25 by either major poll. But The Athletic doesn’t limit itself to 25 spots and is ranking every FBS team in the country, including the Gators who currently sit at the No. 42 spot after an embarrassing loss to Vanderbilt.

Previously ranked No. 29 during the midseason update, Florida appeared to be on an upward trajectory after falling to Georgia. Wins over Texas A&M and South Carolina had the team on track to finish the season with a .500 record against the conference, but Saturday’s loss locked in a second-straight season of 3-5 football against the SEC.

In a world where top-10 finishes are expected, losing to Vanderbilt won’t cut it and the folks at The Athletic seem to agree. There is hope for a strong finish, though.

If Florida can beat Florida State (currently ranked No. 17 overall by The Athletic), then the Gators could finish the regular season somewhere in the top 35. Winning this year’s bowl game could even boost UF into the top 30.

But Billy Napier‘s group is at a point in the season where they can only afford to take it one game at a time, and the FSU rivalry game is in Tallahassee and on a Friday. A short week hurts both teams, but it might force the Gators to turn the page from the loss to Vanderbilt much quicker than they normally would.

On the other hand, a loss in the final week of the season may doom Florida to a finish somewhere around the No. 50 spot. Only time will tell which direction the team goes, but the Gators can’t really afford to phone it in after stumbling so severely.

Gators plummet in USA TODAY Sports’ latest re-rank

The Florida Gators drop significantly in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after Week 12 of the CFB season.

The Florida Gators dropped 13 spots in USA TODAY Sports’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 48, 29 spots behind their rival and final opponent of the regular season, Florida State.

The Gators had an up-and-down first half of the season. They came out of the gate swinging with an upset win over the defending Pac-12 champion Utah Utes in Billy Napier’s first game as Florida’s head coach. They went from unranked to No. 19 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll after the victory.

While a drastically better team this season, Vanderbilt just doesn’t have the players that Florida does, leaving most fans in shock over the result.

Luckily, the Gators’ 6-4 record going into the game confirmed their eligibility beforehand. Sitting at 6-5, the focus shifts to ending the regular season on a positive note. A victory over in-state rival Florida State would go a long way in repairing the fan intrigue post-Vanderbilt and in recruiting momentum with Early Signing Day coming up on Dec. 21.

The special Black Friday edition of the Sunshine State Showdown will be played in Tallahassee on Nov. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. EST and the game will be broadcast on ABC.

Florida rises in The Athletic’s latest ranking of all FBS teams after Week 11

The Athletic has released their latest rankings of all FBS teams, with the Gators rising after their 38-6 victory over South Carolina.

After Saturday’s 38-6 victory over South Carolina, the Florida Gators rose five spots to No. 29 in The Athletic’s latest ranking of all 131 FBS college football teams. They are 10 spots behind rival Florida State and 12 spots behind in-state UCF.

The ranking makes sense from a national perspective. They catapulted into the national spotlight after a primetime upset over Utah in [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first game as coach. The expectations for the Orange and Blue skyrocketed, and their subsequent loss to Kentucky and a close win against USF brought them back to reality.

Despite losing, the Tennessee game put the team back on track. The offense found its groove and the defense seemed at least competent in stretches of the game. A win over Eastern Washington was a step in the right direction. They followed that up with a close win over Missouri, their first SEC win of the season. They had hoped to continue their winning ways against LSU, but an underwhelming defensive performance ultimately gave way to a 45-35 loss, their fourth straight in the rivalry.

After their bye week, they fell at the hands of Georgia. They showed promise in the second half of that game, and that carried over to their victories over Texas A&M and South Carolina, making them 6-4 on the season and bowl-eligible.

The Gators have matchups against Vanderbilt and Florida State left on their schedule, both of which will be played on the road. First up, the Vanderbilt game. Kickoff is scheduled for noon EST and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Gators make big improvement in USA TODAY Sports’ latest re-rank

The Florida Gators make a big improvement in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after Week 11 of the CFB season.

The Florida Gators rose 11 spots in USA TODAY Sports’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 35, over 50 spots ahead of this week’s opponent, Vanderbilt. They are also 12 spots behind their in-state rival, Florida State.

The Gators had an up-and-down first half of the season. They came out of the gate swinging with an upset win over the defending Pac-12 champion Utah Utes in [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first game as Florida’s head coach. They then lost to Kentucky and barely got a win over in-state rival USF, leaving them out of the top 25 entirely. Their close loss to Tennessee paired with their win over Eastern Washington caused expectations to stabilize.

Since their victory over Eastern Washington, the Gators have found their form. Despite losing to LSU and Georgia, the Gators have managed to find their offensive identity. They’re rushing attack is lethal with running backs [autotag]Montrell Johnson[/autotag] and [autotag]Trevor Etienne[/autotag] emerging as a two-headed monster, not to mention [autotag]Anthony Richardson[/autotag]’s effectiveness on designed quarterback runs. The defense has also improved and has not allowed a touchdown in six quarters.

Florida’s 6-4 record has confirmed their bowl eligibility. They have an opportunity to finish 8-4 in Napier’s first season in charge. If they are going to finish 8-4, they’ll need to do so on the road, with last week’s win over South Carolina serving as the final home game of the season.

The Gators’ next game will be against Vanderbilt. That game will take place in Nashville this Saturday with kickoff scheduled for noon EST and the game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

Florida rises in latest CBS Sports re-rankings after Week 10 win

The Florida Gators rise in the latest CBS Sports’ full ranking of all FBS teams, after beating Texas A&M. They are 8th in the SEC.

After beating Texas A&M last week, the Florida Gators rose in the latest CBS Sports rankings of all FBS teams. They are currently the No. 36 team in the nation and the No. 8 team in the SEC. They are six spots ahead of South Carolina, their opponent this weekend.

The Gators rose six spots from last week’s No. 42 position. After a difficult week for the Florida program that saw them miss out on top 2023 prospect [autotag]Cormani McClain[/autotag] and the loss to Georgia, the Gators bounced back in their victory over Texas A&M. The second half was great for the Gators, with the defense tightening up and making adjustments and the offense continuing to find it’s stride. The 41-24 scoreline gave the Orange and Blue some positive momentum heading into the last home game of the season.

That home finale will be Saturday against South Carolina. The Gamecocks come into the matchup 6-3, with a road win over Kentucky, a team the Gators lost to in their SEC opener back in Week 2. They are led by quarterback Spencer Rattler, an Oklahoma transfer that has thrown for over 1,800 yards and eight TDs this season.

That game will be played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. EST and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.

USA TODAY Sports latest re-rank has Gators slightly higher after Week 10

The Florida Gators improve slightly in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after Week 10 of the CFB season.

The Florida Gators have risen three spots in USA TODAY Sports’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 46, one behind this week’s opponent, South Carolina.

What felt like positive momentum coming out of back-to-back home wins over Eastern Washington and Missouri rapidly evaporated. LSU‘s 45-35 victory over the Gators took the air out of the fan base, with the defensive showing not up to Florida fans’ standards. The bye week and 17 unanswered third-quarter points were not enough for the Gators to upset their SEC East rival Georgia.

Their road victory over Texas A&M was enough to improve their national perception, even if ever so slightly. The Gators took advantage of their opponent’s illness, injury, and discipline issues en route to a 41-24 victory in College Station.

Florida’s 5-4 record makes their path to bowl eligibility much easier. With games against South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Florida State remaining, Napier and his staff will put a strong emphasis on finishing the year strong to give the program some positive momentum heading into the offseason.

First up, South Carolina. That game will take place at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium this Saturday with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. EST and the game broadcast on the SEC Network.

USA TODAY Sports has Florida here in latest re-rank after Week 9

The Florida Gators sit inside the Top 50 in USA TODAY’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams after Week 9 of the
CFB season.

The Florida Gators are barely inside the top 50 in USA TODAY Sports’s latest re-rank of all FBS college football teams. They come in at No. 49, a decrease of seven spots since the last update.

The Gators had an up-and-down first half of the season. They came out of the gate swinging with an upset win over the defending Pac-12 champion Utah Utes in [autotag]Billy Napier[/autotag]’s first game as Florida’s head coach. LSU‘s 45-35 victory over the Gators took the air out of the fan base, with the defensive showing not up to Florida fans’ standards. The bye week and 17 unanswered third-quarter points were not enough for the Gators to upset their SEC East rival Georgia. Their latest drop in the re-rank put them behind programs like South Alabama, East Carolina, and the University of Texas-San Antonio, three programs that the Gators should be better than.

Sitting at 4-4 with nearly no chance of winning their division, the Gators’ objective now shifts to bowl eligibility. The extra bowl practices would go a long way for Napier and his staff to prepare for the 2023 season. Florida travels to College Station to take on Texas A&M on Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for noon EDT and the game will be broadcast on ESPN.
