I’m confident that the Orioles (-132) will complete the sweep on Sunday afternoon but I don’t want to pay that juice. I’ll save my wager for the run line and/or total.

Run line/Against the spread

BET ORIOLES -1.5 (+155).

I love getting those juicy plus odds to cover the run line. When Baltimore wins, it usually wins comfortably. In their last 10 wins, they have won all of them by 2-plus runs, including the first 2 games of this series. It doesn’t hurt that Irvin has also won 5 of his last 6 decisions.

The Orioles are trying to keep pace with the red-hot Yankees. This is a game they should win at home, where they are 21-11. The Rays are 11-13 away from Tampa Bay.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 8.5 (+102).

I was actually pleasantly surprised to see that these 2 teams have played to the Under in 7 of their last 10 meetings. That made my decision even easier to bet those plus odds on the Under.

Irvin has been fantastic since late April. He has allowed a grand total of 2 ER over his last 5 starts (30 2/3 IP). I have no reason to believe that this Rays team will be able to break out against Cole.

I lean to the Orioles (-120) to win this game, but I don’t feel confident enough to make this bet. These two teams have played basically even this season and this is mostly a coin flip.

You should never force bets and I don’t love the Orioles enough — like I said in the moneyline section — to bet them to cover this run line. I would not mind taking the Rays getting the run and a half but not at -200 odds. Just avoid this and focus on the total.

There has been some aggregate team lean on the Rays (everything but starting pitching) for several weeks now, so it’s not a big surprise they might be tied for the AL East lead after this one.

Tampa would be a play at -115, but there is some bullpen-fatigue edge on the home side and a bit more to like in Flaherty than what pops on the surface.

Same as above but add more juice and say no that much quicker. PASS.

Over/Under

The Under is 4-1 across the last 5 Tampa-Baltimore games.

Flaherty owns a Boeing 7.16 ERA over his last 6 starts, but that has come alongside some shaky, hard-to-repeat marginal rates that affect run scoring a great deal (.363 BABIP for instance). There are warts to his line to be sure, but Flaherty may be unfairly faded here by some.

Both offenses are a bit too far out over their skis as far as production vs. expected performance. The price here offers good leverage.

Civale’s surface numbers have fallen off of late but perhaps unfairly with some unkind rates around the margins.

Both bullpens have had good numbers over the last month or so. For the Rays, that performance exhibits some real growth, and the Tampa ‘pen looks to be a strength heading down the stretch. Baltimore relievers have clocked a 2.95 ERA since Aug. 1, but that figure has been artificially tamped down by a .269 batting average on balls in play and a kind rate of fly balls leaving the park.

The Rays are 7-1 in their last 8 road-series openers and they are the lean with plus-money odds. However, Bradish is a tough customer, especially at Camden Yards where he owns a 2.26 ERA and 1.01 WHIP.
