Gegard Mousasi’s manager responds to PFL president Ray Sefo: ‘They’re not making a meaningful effort’

Gegard Mousasi and the PFL have not been on the same page since the promotion acquired Bellator.

[autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] and his team feel they are not a priority for the PFL.

Since the promotion acquired Bellator, the former champ Mousasi has not been booked for a fight. His last appearance was 11 months ago, which has caused frustration to build.

According to PFL president Ray Sefo, Mousasi has been offered at least one fight, and is unsure when communication broke down between both sides. However, Mousasi turned down the fight, because the fighter and his team did not consider it a “real offer” because it was at a higher weight class on six week’s notice.

Mousasi’s manager, Nima Safapour, told MMA Junkie they have been willing to work out terms for a return to action, but believe the promotion has put Mousasi on the backburner.

“Let me start off by saying I like Ray Sefo, and have always considered him a good friend. Sincerely,” Safapour told MMA Junkie. “With that being said, since when is offering fights outside a fighter’s weight category a real offer? Jon Jones spent one year bulking up to fight at HW. However, Gegard should assume that the only way he can get a fight is by going up a weight class on 6 weeks notice? A real offer is offering a fight to someone in their actual weight division.

“We asked for Ray Cooper and they told us he was not available. And then a few weeks later they booked Ray on the same event we asked to fight him on. So in reality, it feels that it’s not a priority and they’re not making a meaningful effort. And when fighters fall off of a card, the guys that we asked to fight (and were told were unavailable) get the call, but we don’t . And it’s not reasonable to marinate any fighter on the sidelines for a year and a half because they would not agree to an unfair weight handicap on short notice.”

Safapour continued:

“Ironically, Gegard is such a gangster that he told them that he would fight at 205 for the PFL season tournament if that would give us more options. At least that would give Gegard a few months to bulk up. Not ideal, but we are willing to do it to compromise and create opportunities for everyone . But we got no response from them.

“It’s very simple: At the beginning of the year, we asked to sit down and to map out how they are going to use Gegard in 2024. If it was a priority for them, they would have done it. When they wanted to schedule a short notice fight for Patricio ‘Pitbull,’ they did so. So it really comes down to if they want to do it or not. So, from an outsider looking in, it surely doesn’t feel like a priority for them at Gegard’s detriment.”

While the two sides have been going back-and-forth in the media, Safapour says it would make no difference if everything was kept behind closed doors, because the conversations about Mousasi, 38, have been the same.

“If they intend on using Gegard, then why don’t they ever say his name publicly especially when they’re promoting their upcoming events in Riyadh for their pay-per-view?” Safapour said. “I can only base my assumptions off of their actions. And at this point, unfortunately, their actions sound very different than what they’re saying to us behind closed doors and publicly.

“No one who understands the sport can deny that Gegard is one of the best middleweights of all time. He has earned his right to fight, and he has a binding contract with Bellator. I hope they can turn it around and behave reasonably and ethically because Gegard can make a fantastic contribution to the platform, which is all he’s ever wanted to do.”

PFL president Ray Sefo addresses Gegard Mousasi’s frustration, unsure of communication breakdown

Gegard Mousasi has yet to compete since the PFL’s acquisition of Bellator, but PFL president Ray Sefo says he has been offered a fight.

CHICAGO – PFL president [autotag]Ray Sefo[/autotag] isn’t sure where the communication breakdown occurred with [autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] but assures that the promotion wants to have him compete soon.

Mousasi (49-9-2), hasn’t competed since last May in a unanimous decision loss to Fabian Edwards at Bellator 296. The former Bellator and Strikeforce champion recently told MMA Junkie that he is frustrated with his current situation after PFL acquired Bellator, since he has yet to compete and does not have a fight scheduled.

“I’ve been training in and out a little bit because I don’t get any news from the PFL or Bellator – people think I’m retired, actually,” Mousasi told MMA Junkie. “I’m waiting for a fight. I have a contract with them but it feels like they don’t feel obligated to the contract.”

Following 2024 PFL 3, Sefo addressed Mousasi’s comments, stating that Mousasi has been offered at least one fight in the light heavyweight division.

“When I first talked to his manager about it, I had an offer for him to fight at 205, and he turned it down,” Sefo told reporters during a post-event news conference. “I don’t know where that miscommunication was, but they asked for certain people, and those people weren’t on the card, and then of course, as any card goes along, you match it today, and hope for the best that nobody gets injured.

“Throughout that champions vs. champions, I think we had like three or four guys fall out due to injuries and whatnot. Certain things had to happen, and we had to pull certain people in. But yeah, an offer was offered to his manager from me and they turned it down. He said, ‘No.'”

Mousasi, 38, also stated that PFL has not responded to his manager’s efforts to contact him about booking a fight, describing it as “radio silence.” He also felt that he has been pressured to “take a pay cut” in order to compete.

“The problem is my manager tried to contact them and they don’t even respond,” Mousasi said. “There’s no effort to promote or get me a fight. It’s radio silence with them. People think I’m retired. They’re trying to be No. 2 organization in the world, but I think at least what they can do is tell me what their plans are with me.”

While Sefo did not address Mousasi’s comment about pay, he says the PFL intends to have Mousasi fight for the promotion this year. However, details need to be ironed out to create something that makes sense for all parties involved.

“Yeah, absolutely,” Sefo said when asked if the promotion wants Mousasi to compete. “It’s just we got to sit down and work out what makes sense and go from there.”

Ray Sefo: Francis Ngannou’s PFL debut to be ‘figured out’ after ‘truly remarkable’ performance vs. Tyson Fury

PFL president Ray Sefo is proud of Francis Ngannou’s near-win against Tyson Fury, but seems unsure about his MMA debut with the promotion.

LAS VEGAS – Ray Sefo was impressed with how [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] handled himself in his boxing debut against Tyson Fury, but the former UFC heavyweight champion’s near victory in the ring could lead to changes in plans for his PFL debut.

Prior to facing Fury, Ngannou was expected to make his PFL debut in Q1 of 2024. However, Ngannou’s success in the ring has given PFL president Sefo and other execs in the promotion pause about Ngannou’s return to MMA, considering the rise in talks of a potential rematch with Fury, or other matchups against top heavyweight boxers like Deontay Wilder or Anthony Joshua.

“That’s something we got to talk to the team more about,” Sefo told reporters during a media scrum at Xtreme Couture.” I know, and obviously with Francis as well, I know he’s going to want to take a little bit of time off. At the moment he’s scheduled to compete in February, but right now, I think it’s one of those things where we just got to sit down with the team, and of course with Francis, and figure that out and see where we go from here.”

PFL founder Donn Davis recently stated he believes MMA options for Ngannou “are not that interesting right now” and expects another boxing match next. Ngannou is expected to make a decision about his next step in the coming weeks.

[lawrence-related id=2692308,2692159,2692161]

Although the PFL may end up waiting a little longer before the biggest signing in the company’s history makes his debut with the promotion, all involved appear unbothered by the situation as they heap praise on “The Predator.”

“What he did was truly amazing,” Sefo said. “It wasn’t just another MMA fighter boxing, and he wasn’t just fighting anybody. He was fighting the boxing heavyweight champion of the world. So, to see him do what he did was truly amazing because a lot of people doubted him. I personally thought he’d probably have one to five rounds to put Tyson Fury away. But when he dropped Tyson Fury, that also gave him a lot more confidence in what he was doing. He was so composed, he was patient, and the fact that he went 10 rounds with the heavyweight champion is truly remarkable.

“I’m so happy for Francis. Everyone was saying, ‘Nah, he’s going to get outboxed.’ That didn’t happen. Francis was right there throughout the fight, and that fight could have easily gone his way. I mean, what, there was one point in it? In my opinion, he won, because nobody expected him to go 10 rounds with the heavyweight champion of the world. So, in my opinion, congrats, Francis. You did great, brother.”

PFL announces immediate USADA anti-doping partnership ‘very similar’ to UFC’s but ‘with minor distinctions’

The UFC and PFL drug testing protocols will be “will be very similar, with minor distinctions,” according to an email acquired by MMA Junkie.

In the wake of numerous positive athlete drug tests, PFL has officially partnered with USADA, the same anti-doping organization utilized by the UFC.

In a memo sent Tuesday by PFL president of fighter operations Ray Sefo to fighters and teams, the promotion announced its immediate installment of the partnership and detailed what that exactly means. Fighters who are partaking in the upcoming playoffs are now required to partake in educational introduction sessions later this week.

According to a document attached to the email, the PFL and UFC drug-testing protocols implemented by USADA “will be very similar, with minor distinctions to account for the PFL’s sport season format.” It is unclear exactly what those distinctions are at this time.

Additonally, whereabouts failures will not be installed to start, though the document indicates that will eventually change.

MMA Junkie acquired and verified the email with multiple people who received it, but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has not yet spoken publicly on the matter. USADA confirmed the partnership on a new informational page on their official website. ESPN first reported the news.

Read below the email message sent to fighters:

“PFL Fighters,

We are proud to announce that today we are formally launching the PFL Anti-Doping Program in partnership with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

USADA conducts year-round, independent anti-doping programs for all Olympic, Paralympic, and UFC athletes, and will now do so for PFL athletes as well.

This program is part of the PFL’s commitment as a fighter first organization to supporting a safe, level playing field and advancing the highest levels of competition and the integrity of the sport.

The program will begin immediately with initial educational sessions being scheduled with USADA this week for participants in the upcoming Playoffs. Educational sessions to explain the program will be scheduled with other fighters thereafter. It is strongly recommended that each fighter have their coach, manager, or other key support person join the educational sessions.

The PFL Fighter Ops Team will follow up shortly with more details.

In the meantime, more information about the program is available in the attached FAQs and at http://PFL.USADA.org.

Ray Sefo
President of Fighter Operations”

The partnership with USADA comes after a 2023 regular season filled with drug test failures and, at a Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) hearing, is one PFL indicated would soon come.

Though it does not appear athletic commissions changed their independent drug testing procedures, 10 fighters tested positive over the span of the promotion’s first three regular season events in Las Vegas.

Among the positives were 2022 light heavyweight champion Rob Wilkinson, 2021 heavyweight champion Bruno Cappelozza, former UFC title challenger and Thiago Santos.

All of the fighters who tested positive were suspended, fined, and those who won had their victories overturned. The results of the drug tests from the PFL’s second grouping of regular season events, which took place in Atlanta in June, have not yet been publicized.

PFL president Ray Sefo says discussions with Francis Ngannou still ongoing: ‘It’s all positive’

PFL president Ray Sefo is still pursuing of one of the biggest free agents in the market.

LAS VEGAS – PFL president [autotag]Ray Sefo[/autotag] is still pursuing of one of the biggest free agents in the market.

Former heavyweight champion [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] parted ways with the UFC in 2022, but is yet to find a new home. Among the offers he’s received is from the PFL, who appear willing to work around Ngannou’s demands.

The avenue Ngannou is laser focused on is boxing, something he couldn’t come to terms with the UFC on.

“That is correct, we’ve had a few meetings with Francis and those discussions are still going on,” Sefo told reporters, including MMA Junkie backstage. “Obviously, there’s a few other things he also wants to pursue which is boxing and he knows where we stand with it too so, you know, it’s all positive should I say, right?”

[lawrence-related id=2623506,2623348,2621607]

Sefo admits he’d rather have Ngannou take part in the heavyweight season, but will give him leeway if he does decide to join the PFL.

“To be quite honest, I would love to have him in the season,” Sefo added. “But again, it’s no surprise he’s a pay-per-view kind of guy, and so I think that’s kind of up to him where we go with that. But listen, if he decides that he wants to be in the season, I’d love to have him in the season.”

Ray Sefo: ‘Everybody was happy’ with PFL’s pay-per-view debut

“ESPN was truly happy with the show, so if they’re happy, we’re happy.”

LAS VEGAS – PFL president [autotag]Ray Sefo[/autotag] considers the promotion’s pay-per-view debut a success.

The 2022 PFL Championships, which took place at Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden, featured a six-fight main card that streamed on on ESPN+ pay-per-view last month. Viewers were charged $49.99, and although the number of buys wasn’t revealed, Sefo was happy with the overall result.

“Everybody was happy with it,” Sefo told MMA Junkie on the World MMA Awards red carpet. “You’ve got to start somewhere, and we were happy with the outcome of the whole show. ESPN was truly happy with the show, so if they’re happy, we’re happy.”

In the night’s headliner, Larissa Pacheco pulled off a massive upset when she defeated two-time champion Kayla Harrison to capture the women’s lightweight title. Brendan Loughnane also broke out as a star when he defeated standout wrestler Bubba Jenkins to claim the featherweight title.

[lawrence-related id=2602731,2600754]

PFL’s biggest star, Harrison, suffered her first-career setback, but despite the surprising outcome, Sefo rates this season as arguably their best.

“It’s probably the best season so far,” Sefo said. “Just from the beginning to the end and the finals, everybody showed up, everybody did what they needed to do. The whole experience was truly amazing. Before the first fight we were half full. By the end of that first fight, it was completely full. Overall, I couldn’t be more happy. It was truly an amazing night.”

He continued, “There were a few upsets that night, and the fact that we ended up having six new champions, all from different countries – unfortunately we didn’t have a guy to represent the U.S. this time around, but that being said, we were truly happy with the outcome of the show.”
