3 takeaways from news that Marquand Manuel will coach the Eagles secondary

The Philadelphia Eagles have hired former NFL player and Falcons defensive coordinator, Marquand Manuel as the defensive backs coach.

The Philadelphia Eagles have made an impressive hire on Senior Bowl Saturday, agreeing to a deal with Marquand Manuel according to Jeremy Fowler.

Manuel was the architect of an improved Falcons defense and will be called upon to turn around an Eagles cornerback group that has struggled in coverage over the past two years.

With changes coming on the backend of the Eagles defense, here are four takeaways from Manuel’s hiring.

1. Eagles defensive backs will improve immediately

Manuel, 40, has a track record of success and experience that dates back to his playing days at Florida. He played 8 seasons in the NFL and coached up the Seahawks defense when they were considered the best in the NFL. While in Atlanta, Manuel was credited with the improvement in Keanu Neals play overall improvement of the Falcons secondary.

Eagles to interview Browns’ assistant DeWayne Walker for coaching job

The Philadelphia Eagles are in need of a defensive backs coach and according to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, a former NFL defensive back is on the agenda.

DeWayne Walker is currently having his job status evaluated by the Browns and new head coach Kevin Stefanski, but will reportedly interview with Doug Pederson and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cory Undlin left the Eagles to join Matt Patricia and the Detroit Lions as the teams’ new defensive coordinator.

Walker played 14 years in the NFL at defensive back and has accrued 14 years of coaching experience, as he’s spent time with the Patriots, Giants, Redskins, Jaguars and most recently the Browns.

7 CB options that make sense for the Eagles in the 2020 NFL Draft

Trevon Diggs among 7 CB options for the Eagles in the 2020 NFL Draft

The 2020 NFL Draft is almost three months away, and with the deadline for underclassmen to announce whether they will enter draft having passed Monday, the business of preparing for the NFL Draft is upon us.

The Eagles have several big needs and there’s been some discussion about a full-scale rebuild in the secondary.

If the Eagles do choose to use a first or second-round pick on a cornerback, here are seven options that make the most sense.

1. Kristian Fulton LSU

With Jalen Mills set to hit free agency, the Eagles could replace the former LSU cornerback with one of the current Tiger greats.

Fulton made an immediate impact when thrown into the fire and over the past two seasons, he’s been the highest-graded cornerback in America according to grades from PFF.

Fulton is elite at the point of attack, as he owns the highest forced incompletion rate the past two years, allowing just 23.7% of contested targets to be caught.

Why CB is a bigger need than WR in the 2020 NFL Draft

The biggest need for the Eagles in the 2020 NFL Draft is a cornerback, not a wide receiver.

The biggest need on the Philadelphia Eagles is cornerback, and it really isn’t an argument in my opinion.

Eagles wide receivers were not great this season. The Eagles will not re-sign Nelson Agholor, and for good reason.    The Eagles could also part ways with Alshon Jeffery, even with the cap hit they will take. However, DeSean Jackson is under contract in 2020 and he was awesome for that Week 1 game against the Washington Redskins. He is the greatest deep threat of all-time and he will be back and ready to go for 2020. Greg Ward, who isn’t a No. 1 or No. 2 wide receiver, showed some promise and there is no way he isn’t on the roster to start 2020. J.J. Arcega-Whiteside was one of the biggest letdowns of the season, but the Eagles used a 2019 second-round pick on him, so he will obviously be part of the Eagles next season. Robert Davis is under contract next season as well, but he is not a guy the Eagles are counting on to produce.

So, the Eagles receiver room will look as follows:

Jackson

Arcgea-Whiteside

Ward

Davis

It is clear that wide receiver will surely be addressed this off-season, but do not forget that Carson Wentz threw for 4,000 yards without a wide receiver going over 500 yards, which is an amazing stat. But outside of Wentz’s elite ability, why was he able to do that? The Eagles have two elite tight ends, Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. They also have an extremely creative head coach and play-caller in Doug Pederson, who utilizes his running backs well in the passing game too.

A first-round receiver is not a bigger need than a cornerback. It just isn’t. Is getting Wentz more pass-catching help from the receiver position a priority? Absolutely. But getting Jackson back will be huge for Wentz and having the two elite tight ends needs to factor into this decision as well.

If you think the wide receiver room is lacking in 2020, picture this; the Eagles cornerback room is somehow worse.

The cornerbacks under contract in 2020 are as follows:

Cre’von LeBlanc

Avonte Maddox

Rasul Douglas

Sidney Jones

Jalen Mills and Ronald Darby will be free agents. The Eagles could bring one of them back, but it would be a huge mistake. Both players have shown more than enough times they are not the answer at cornerback. Darby is unable to stay healthy and when he is on the field, he is giving up big plays. Mills brings a ton of energy to the field and likes to tackle, but the main thing you want from your outside cornerback is coverage and he is a below-average cover corner.

LeBlanc will, and should, start as the slot corner in 2020. He has shown enough of a spark at the end of the last two seasons to get the start there. However, there is not one legitimate starter on the outside. That is a really, really scary thought.

Maddox is a good player, but I do not think outside cornerback is his best fit. I think the Eagles should work him more as a safety in 2020. Douglas has proven he is not a starter and I do not see how he is back in 2020. The Eagles will save almost $800,000 by releasing him, which is more than worth it at this point. And then there is Jones, who has underachieved his entire career but made a couple big-time plays to end 2019. The Eagles can save a little over $1 million by releasing him, but will they give up on him? I do not think so, but regardless, even if they keep Jones, they need a No. 1 and a No. 2 cornerback. Or, if they believe Jones or Maddox can be the No. 2 cornerback, they still do not have a No. 1 cornerback, which is why it needs to be the priority in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

After losing to the Seattle Seahawks, the Eagles will officially pick 21st in the 2020 NFL Draft. Howie Roseman is always making moves, so they may not pick 21st on draft day, but no matter when they pick in the first round; That pick should be a cornerback, as it is the biggest need for the Eagles next season.

Eagles place CB Ronald Darby on injured reserve with strained hip flexor

Eagles place Ronald Darby on injured reserve with a hip flexor strain

The Philadelphia Eagles have made a slew of roster moves on Tuesday and cornerback Ronald Darby was among them. After re-injuring his hip, the Eagles placed the veteran defensive back on injured reserve.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Darby suffered a grade two strain of his hip flexor and we’ll need 4-weeks to rehab.

Darby won’t need surgery and could return if the Eagles make a lengthy playoff run. Rasul Douglas and the emerging Sidney Jones will get reps in his place.

The Eagles have now announced that Darby is questionable to return with a hip-flexor injury.

Darby has landed on the injury report the past two weeks with a hip injury and it’ll be interesting to see if he returns.

Rasul Douglas will replace Darby, but he’s battled injury as well.

Eagles activate CB Cre’Von LeBlanc off injured reserve

Cre’Von LeBlanc off injured reserve and added to Eagles active roster

The Philadelphia Eagles have a full and healthy defensive backfield with the news that Cre’Von LeBlanc has been activated off of injured reserve and added to the 53-man roster.

To make room for LeBlanc, the Eagles waived Jordan Matthews earlier in the week.

LeBlanc injured his foot during the first week of training camp and missed all of the preseason.

During the 53-man cut-down, the Eagles designated LeBlanc to injured reserve with his status to return once healthy. LeBlanc will backup Avonte Maddox in the slot.

Eagles CB Jalen Mills has top defender passer rating in NFC since returning to lineup

Jalen Mills has top defender passer rating in NFC since returning to the lineup

Jalen Mills has played like the best cornerback on the roster since returning to the Eagles lineup and according to Next Generation stats, via the teams’ media department, Mills is fifth in the NFL and first in the NFC in defender passer rating since Week 7.

The tough and physical cornerback has raised the play of everyone in the secondary and what Mills lacks in height or draft status, he more than makes up in moxie and pure confidence.

It’s no coincidence that the Eagles are 22-8 over the last three years when Mills starts and 15-6 when both Darby and Mills are in the lineup together. According to Reuben Frank, the stats suggest that the Eagles are a much better team with Mills in the lineup.

Philadelphia was 27th (280 yards per game) in the NFL in passing yards per game while Mills was out, and are now 3rd (174 yards per game) in the league with him back. Eagles’ opponent’s completion percentages, passer rating, and touchdown passes are also down when the “Green Goblin” is on the field.

Former Bucs CB Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

Vernon Hargreaves could be a player the Eagles have interest in claiming

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers grew tired of Vernon Hargreaves and his antics, but could the former first-round pick be a player that the Eagles have interest in adding to the roster?

Two days after he was benched for lack of hustle, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers released starting cornerback Vernon Hargreaves on Tuesday morning.

“After thoughtful consideration over the past few weeks, Bruce and I came to the conclusion that we needed to make this change,” Buccaneer’s general manager Jason Licht said in a statement via ESPN.com. “
Hargreaves was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida.

Even with Cre’Von LeBlanc set to return to the roster, Hargreaves could be a good fit for an Eagles defense looking for a standout cornerback.

Hargreaves started all 16 games for the Buccaneers as a rookie, and had his best season as a pro, logging 76 tackles and two forced turnovers. The past two seasons have seen Hargreaves really struggle with injuries and inconsistency.

He missed half of his second season with a hamstring issue and all but one game last season after injuring his shoulder.

Hargreave would fit well in Jim Schwartz man to man defense, a style he was astute at coming out of college.

His physical play marvels Rasul Douglas’s style and he’s still playing on his rookie deal.

Because he was waived, Hargreaves will be subjected to the waiver process, meaning the other 31 NFL teams around the league will have an opportunity to place a claim before he can become an unrestricted free agent.

Still in his fourth-year, Hargreaves would carry a salary into 2020 of $9.954 million after the Buccaneers exercised his fifth-year option prior to the season.
