Texans defensive tackle Rasheem Green reflects on mental aspect of football

Green was adamant that the game of football is won or lost on the players’ ability to understand what is happening around them in real time

Another disappointing loss in Week 7 has the Houston Texans sitting at a paltry 1-4-1 record ahead of their matchup against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. The team is looking for any kind of boost they can get before playing such a challenging opponent, and players spoke to the media on Tuesday about what lies ahead for them as they try to salvage their season.

Defensive lineman Rasheem Green was quick to point out how much of an impact practice makes on the Texans’ fortunes on a week-to-week basis, and how the game is won or lost with the players’ status above the shoulders. The mental aspect of the sport, Green said, is the most crucial aspect to getting wins in the NFL.

“One of the biggest things I’ve learned from the guys I’ve played with and from being out there, being around a bunch of different coaches, I feel like the game is more mental than it is physical, for the most part,” Green explained. “For me personally, it’s out there. It’s not about the physical part. It’s all mental, the preparation going into the week, I feel like that’s the biggest difference for me.”

Though expectations for the Texans were low this season, the team certainly won’t be satisfied with anything less than a monumental effort to get back to .500 at the very least. A break-even showing, or as close as they can get in a 17-game schedule, would mark a vast improvement over last year’s results, and might make Houston a more desirable location for prospective free agents in the offseason when they’ll look to add talent for their rebuild.

For now, the Texans will rely on veterans like Green to buoy the team and mentor younger talent to get through the rest of this season making whatever progress they can. To hear Green tell it, most of the work will need to be done in helping the younger crop of players better process the game happening around them and getting them up to speed to compete in earnest next year.

Texans DE Rasheem Green impressive in Week 2 debut against the Broncos

Houston Texans defensive end Rashsem Green proved how talented he can be off the edge against the Denver Broncos.

After missing the regular season opener against the Indianapolis Colts due to injury, defensive end Rasheem Green finally made his Houston Texans season debut against the Denver Broncos.

He made his impact felt immediately when he was able to get to Broncos quarterback and former teammate Russell Wilson early in the second quarter for his first sack with the Texans.

“I knew it was going to be a pass,” said Green. “There was no back in the backfield. I was lined up wide—had a plan. I just went out there and was playing fast.”

Green, 25, was on the Texans’ radar this past offseason as they looked to add depth to their defensive line. He signed a one-year deal worth $2.75 million with Houston after spending four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks.

Texans head coach Lovie Smith was impressed by Green’s debut as he finished the game recording 1.5 sacks and five tackles, but his ability to help in the running game stood out to the Texans’ first-year head coach.

“His play against the run was pretty good,” Smith said during his postgame press conference. “There’s a reason why he’s been in the mix, though. He is a good football player. We like what he was able to do.”

Although he helped the Texans’ defense contain Russell Wilson for most of the game, Green would have liked the outcome to be in Houston’s favor as he watched his team squandered another fourth-quarter lead in the 16-9 loss to the Broncos.

“To me, finishing means you’re out there doing ‘right’ longer,” Green told the media in the locker room after the game. “So, I felt like we were doing ‘right’ for a large amount of the game, but we just got to do it longer and better.”

“I mean we got a team that is on consecutive losing seasons. You kind of lose a sense of how to finish out those games because results start going the opposite way. But yeah definitely, just continue to do the same thing that we did that got us to that point, just execute and finish it out.”

DL Rasheem Green sharpened skill going against Texans Pro Bowl left tackles of past and present

Defensive lineman Rasheem Green has developed as a pass rusher going against past and present Houston Texans left tackles.

HOUSTON — Rasheem Green entered the NFL as a 2018 third-round pick from USC.

The Seattle Seahawks had traded with the Houston Texans at the deadline the previous season for Pro Bowl left tackle Duane Brown. The former 2008 first-rounder from Virginia Tech became the blindside protector for quarterback Russell Wilson. It also provided an opportunity for Green to go against one of the more dominant pass blockers in the game everyday in practice.

Flash forward to 2022. The Texans signed Green in the offseason to be a part of coach Lovie Smith’s defensive line rotation in the Tampa 2 scheme, and Green continues to hone his craft going against one of Houston’s left tackles. This time, Green takes on Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil, who the Texans traded for at the end of the 2019 preseason.

“I feel like my hands have been sharper,” Green said of the experience working against Brown for years and now Tunsil. “My keys have been more on point because with guys like Duane and guys like Laremy, your rush always has to be on point from the get-off to your hand placement to how violent your hands are.”

The best of Green’s work came in 2021 as the 6-4, 279-pound defensive lineman finished with 48 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks, six tackles for loss, 15 quarterback hits, and four pass breakups in 17 games, 16 of which he started.

“You always have to make sure you’re on point from the get-off to the finish,” said Green.

Green will have an opportunity to showcase how going against Tunsil throughout training camp has been help when the Texans host the New Orleans Saints Aug. 13 at NRG Stadium.

Texans DE Jerry Hughes says Rasheem Green is ‘very versatile’

Houston Texans defensive end Jerry Hughes likes the versatility that Rasheem Green brings to the defensive line.

Part of Lovie Smith’s philosophy with the Tampa 2 scheme is to have an oncoming wave of defensive linemen that wear down opposing offensive lines.

That is why the Houston Texans signed former Seattle Seahawks 2018 third-round defensive end Rasheem Green. The 6-4, 279-pound defensive lineman has the size and speed to get upfield and wreak havoc in opposing backfields.

Defensive end Jerry Hughes has been impressed with Green’s abilities through the first five days of training camp.

“Man, he’s a very versatile player,” Hughes told reporters on Aug. 3 at Houston Methodist Training Center. “There’s not too many positions he can’t play. He’s playing all four positions on our line, but that’s just the kind of guy he is, and that’s what we expect from him. Just to kind of raise Hell wherever we put him, and he’s been doing it.”

Green generated 94 combined tackles, 13.5 sacks, 12 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits, three forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and six pass breakups through 53 games with Seattle, 24 of which he started. Green’s best season was last year when he had 6.5 sacks and 15 quarterback hits through 17 games (16 starts).

Hughes, who has been in the NFL since 2010, believes that it is the combination of Green’s size and quickness that makes him a dangerous matchup.

“To be that tall, that big and that fast, he can rush inside, he can rush outside, he can get his hands up, bat down passes,” said Hughes. “Everything that he kind of brings to the table is all pluses for us. We’ve just got to figure out how often we can get him out there on the field and then just let him loose.”

If the Texans are able to have Green, 25, play productively in their 4-3 base defense, it should help Houston build upon the successes they did have a defense amid the 4-13 finish, such as cultivating 25 takeaways, tied with the Los Angeles Rams and New Orleans Saints for the 10th-most in the NFL.
