Michigan State football No. 40 in ESPN’s latest SP+ rankings

The Spartans don’t move much after a pretty neutral win over Rutgers.

A win over Rutgers didn’t do much for Michigan State in the eyes of Bill Connelly’s computer.

The Spartans are at No. 40 this week in Connelly’s SP+ rankings. Michigan State ranks 86th in offense, 12th in defense and 114th in special teams. MSU is a projected 7.6 points better than an average college football team on a neutral field.

MSU’s upcoming opponent, Maryland, is rated 88th in SP+, although the Terps have been in a bit of a free fall lately. They’re ranked No. 73 on offense, No. 82 on defense and No. 127 on special teams. They’re a projected 5.7 points worse than an average college football team on a neutral field.

SP+, according to Connelly, is “(A) tempo- and opponent-adjusted measure of college football efficiency.”

Top five teams hold steady in Amway Coaches Poll

Not much change at the top of the polls this week.

College football’s penultimate week offered little drama at the top of the polls.

LSU, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia and Alabama remain the top five teams in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY.

Of the top five teams Ohio State and Georgia were the only ones to have some drama, with the Buckeyes beating former No. 9 Penn State by 11 and Georgia squeezing by then-No. 24 Texas A&M. As is tradition in the SEC, many top teams took the week off with FCS opponents and Clemson had a bye.

Oregon was the big dropper this week, falling from No. 6 to No. 13 after a loss at unranked Arizona State.

In the Big Ten, Ohio State is trailed by No. 9 Minnesota, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Penn State, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 20 Iowa.

The World Amateur Golf Ranking is to receive a major revamp for the 2020 season. The R&A and USGA is instituting a new system called the “Power Method” to try to improve the way amateurs are ranked.

The governing bodies believe the new system will “better reflect the current performance of golfers by placing greater emphasis on current form and results by improving the algorithms used to determine the WAGR.

“In the new structure, every event in the world will earn a power number based on the strength of its starting field, which will then determine the total number of ranking points on offer to the field. This will extend to a maximum of 1000 for amateur events, with players also able to gain ranking points from playing in professional tournaments.”

It is the first major revision to the system since its inauguration in 2007.

“We are thrilled to introduce the Power Method which will significantly improve the World Amateur Golf Ranking,” said Jeff Holzschuh, chairman of the WAGR committee.

“We have listened to feedback about WAGR since its inception, and we believe this change addresses many of the challenges within the previous system.”

Professor Steve Otto, Director of Equipment Standards and Chief Technology Officer for the R&A, said: “The simplicity and elegance of the revised WAGR system will be of great benefit to competitive players at every level.”

“It will be easier for players to become ranked under the Power Method but, with the system recognizing current form and rewarding recent top results, it will be tougher to remain ranked compared to the previous system.

“The Power Method will make WAGR a true indication of the ranking of the world’s best and leading amateur golfers.”

There are currently just under 10,000 amateur golfers worldwide on the WAGR tables, over 6,500 men and in excess of 3,000 women.

Few major changes in this week’s Amway Coaches Poll

It was an eventful week in college football, just not at the top of the polls.

[jwplayer 2KXMSFL4-PROpJzTY]

It was certainly a newsworthy week of college football, but there just weren’t many big-time losses.

As a result, this week’s Amway Coaches Poll, powered by USA TODAY, remains mostly unchanged at the top. Minnesota and Baylor fell out of the top ten after each suffered their first losses of the season.

Alabama and Georgia swapped spots with the Crimson Tide dropping from four to five and the Bulldogs taking their place. That, I’d guess, is mostly due to Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa suffering a dislocated hip against Mississippi State, knocking him out for the season.

LSU, Ohio State and Clemson are the top three teams in the poll, in that order.

In the Big Ten, Penn State rose two spots from No. 11 to No. 9. Minnesota fell from No. 7 to No. 11. Michigan (No. 12), Wisconsin (No. 14), and Iowa (No. 20) round out the conference’s ranked teams.

Midweek Mailbag – Get Your Questions In!

Your questions can be anything in regards to Notre Dame or college football for that matter.  They can be incredibly serious and big-picture or something small and funny.  I’ll pick out the best ones from the following places:

Last week we debuted the “Midweek Mailbag” and answered five of your best questions we could come up with.  They ranged from hypotheticals such as “IF Brian Kelly were to leave who would be the first three people you’d target who would be REALISTIC candidates, not dream ones?” and there was a solid one about being independent and if players prefer that or conference-life.

If you missed it, you can check out last week’s right here.  I was even asked if I even liked Notre Dame because I dared to repeat information that Paul Finebaum gave, even though his info appears to have been correct.

Your questions can be anything in regards to Notre Dame or college football for that matter.  They can be incredibly serious and big-picture or something small and funny.  I’ll pick out the best ones from the following places:

1. Leave a comment on this or any other post on Fighting Irish Wire

2. Leave a question on our Facebook page – either on one of our posts or on our wall

3. Tweet us @IrishWireND or me personally @Shep670

4. Leave a comment on our Instagram Page. And even if you don’t leave a question – you should go follow it as it’s going to become a lot more active soon.

Now get asking those questions and see if yours makes the cut.  Get-on, now!
