These teams meet for the back half of a home-and-home Thursday after the Rangers took care of business at their rink Monday with a 4-1 final. Rangers winger Chris Kreider lit the lamp for the 3rd time this season, and C Mika Zibanejad scored his 1st of the season.

Red Wings C Dylan Larkin had the lone goal Monday as he lit the lamp for the 2nd time this season. The Wings have yet to really get their offense going as they were downed 6-3, won 3-0 and were defeated 4-1 in the early going. Their goaltending situation is also in flux with them exposing Ville Husso to waivers to be sent down. It’s still very early, and they’ve had a brutal schedule to open the season. Jonathan Quick (18-6-2, 2.62 GAA, .911 SV%, 2 SO last season) vs. Cam Talbot (1-0-0, 1.27 GAA, .964 SV%, 1 SO)

Quick was 2-0-0 with a 3.01 GAA and .903 SV% against the Wings last season. The 38-year-old vet stopped 56 of 62 shots fired his way. This will be his first action of the season, and he was phenomenal early last year with a 0.41 GAA in 3 October games.

Speaking of phenomenal, Talbot stopped all 42 shots the Nashville Predators sent his way Saturday. If that doesn’t do it for ya, he’s 5th in the league with 3.9 goals saved above expected, despite starting just 1 game. He hasn’t faced the Rangers since ’22-23, and he was 2-1-0 with a 2.64 GAA and .916 SV%.

Moneyline

The Rangers have won 4 straight meetings, and they have 92% of the cash on them. However, I’m going with the home side. They don’t have to contend with G Igor Shesterkin, and Talbot is cooking something serious between the pipes. The Wings came up just short in this scenario last April in a 4-3 final. I look for a low-scoring affair with the RED WINGS +125 coming out ahead.

Puck line/Against the spread

Puck line, schmuck line. I’m going with CAM TALBOT OVER 26.5 SAVES (-120). The Rangers are 2nd in the league with 34 shots on goal per game.

Over/Under

I truly could see this going either way, but shooters shoot. I look for Talbot to make a stand and keep the Rangers under 3 goals. The Wings haven’t exactly been lighting the twine ablaze either, scoring just 7 goals in 3 games.

Take the UNDER 6.5 (-115).

Igor Shesterkin (6-2-2, 2.58 GAA, .910 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Ville Husso (5-1-2, 1.86 GAA, .941 SV%, 2 SO)

Shesterkin has hit a rough patch, losing 2 straight at home and allowing 4 goals in each. He was great against Detroit last season, although the Red Wings are vastly improved this year. Shesterkin went 1-0-1 with a 0.96 GAA and .962 SV% over 2 starts vs. Detroit in 2021-22.

I expect a concerted effort from the Rangers, but Detroit gets it done at home, where it is 5-1-2. New York simply isn’t scoring enough, and they appear to have a lack of cohesiveness on the ice right now.

This will require an empty-netter, but I like Detroit to secure a 2-goal victory. Five of Detroit’s 7 wins on the season have been by 2 or more. Four of Husso’s 5 wins have been by 2 or more. Let’s take a chance and drop a HALF-UNIT on the ALTERNATE SPREAD RED WINGS -1.5 (+310).

Over/Under

The Over is 4-1 in the Rangers’ last 5 vs. a team with a winning record. There are a lot of Under trends for Detroit, but honestly, throw those out of the window. This is a playoff-caliber team if they remain healthy. It’s possible it could be a 2-1 nailbiter, but Detroit has posted 3 goals in 4 of its last 5 contests. The Red Wings probably can’t wait to hit the ice and forget Sunday even happened as they were clubbed, 11-3, by the Pittsburgh Penguins. They have won just 2 of their last 10.

Georgiev survived a 5-4 overtime scare Sunday against the lowly Buffalo Sabres his last time out. He made just 13 saves on 17 shots in the game. That’s a far cry from shutting out the first-place Carolina Hurricanes March 20 when he stopped 44 shots.

Nedeljkovic started the laugher against the Penguins and coughed up the first 7 goals before hitting the showers. If you take out Sunday’s massacre, he has a solid .908 SV% on a bad team this month. He did not play in the game against the Rangers last month.

Money line

The Red Wings stunned the Rangers last month in a 3-2 win via shootout. And that was against Vezina Trophy front runner Igor Shesterkin. This time they have added motivation and newly acquired C Oskar Sundqvist in tow. Sunny has two goals, an assist and is a plus-1 in four games since he was acquired from the St. Louis Blues.

This feels like a trap game, and the Red Wings are rested and angry. LEAN RED WINGS +115  for the upset.

Against the spread

Both teams are decent on the puck line as the Rangers are 20-16 against it on the road, and the Red Wings are 17-17 against it at home. The Red Wings offer no insurance in the event their upset plans come undone at +1.5 (-230). So we’re going to STEER CLEAR  of this one even though it may be a safe bet to side with Detroit.

Over/Under

I don’t like taking 6.5 Overs, but this one makes some sense. The first game ended 3-2 with the Rangers’ top goalie in net. This one features a leaky backup and an angry team that just saw the lamp light up so much that Pittsburgh may raise ticket prices to cover the electric bill. The Rangers are 6-4 O/U in thelast 10 games while the Red Wings are 6-3-1 O/U. The Over is also 8-1 in the last 9 at Little Caesars Arena. Let’s put up a half-unit on the OVER 6.5 (-135).
