Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 8 main event ends after controversial sequence

Brandon Davis was livid from the call made by referee Eric MacMahon that ended his fight vs. Randy Costa.

[autotag]Randy Costa[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Brandon Davis[/autotag] quickly became a back-and-forth banger, but it was all for not.

The Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 8 main event Friday at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. ended in no contest after referee Eric MacMahon deemed a knee from Davis illegal and Costa was deemed unable to continue because of it. The fight was waved off at 2:47 of Round 1.

Costa lit up Davis over the first two minutes, much to the dismay of the local crowd. Despite the mouse under his left eye, Davis fought back and hurt Costa. The blow totally turned the tides. Davis went for the kill, and nearly got it. Costa crumpled and covered up. That’s when Davis drilled him in the head with his knee.

The blow caused much confusion as MacMahon signaled for a replay. Upon further review, it was deemed MacMahon’s call was correct and a no contest would go into the books. As a result, the inaugural Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA bantamweight title remains vacant.

Randy Costa: Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA ‘knows what they’re doing’ with main event

Randy Costa thinks his fighting style is a big reason why he’s headlining Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 8 on Friday.

[autotag]Randy Costa[/autotag] thinks his fighting style is a big reason why he’s headlining Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA 8.

Costa is set to rematch fellow UFC veteran Brandon Davis Friday at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss. Davis won their first meeting by submission, which took place under the UFC banner in April 2019.

The card features various UFC alums – including the likes of Kevin Lee, Curtis Millender, and Charles Rosa. After his impressive first-round finish of Jason Knight in his promotional debut last November, “The Zohan” was rewarded with a main event spot.

“I think that Gambred knows what they’re doing,” Costa told MMA Junkie Radio. “Especially in Mississippi – my fighting style is fireworks regardless of who’s in front of me, and you can say the same thing about Brandon. I think that with my last fight, last year when I fought Jason Knight, I believe that I kind of stole the show. So, to go back to Biloxi, the people of Mississippi are familiar with me.

“Obviously Brandon and I have a history, our first fight was exciting as f*ck for however long it lasted. But yeah man, I’m super thankful to be headlining this card, and I’m for sure going to take advantage of the opportunity. I’m excited to throw down. This has been a long camp, I feel really good, I have a great dance partner. It’s going to be a sick show.”

Costa is no stranger to violence and is enjoying throwing down without the gloves. Win or lose throughout his career, Costa’s fights have never gone the distance.

“It doesn’t worry me, dude,” Costa said. “This whole thing is crazy and that’s why I decided to do it. It was because it’s outlandish. Just took the training wheels off, not fighting with gloves anymore, but the biggest difference I noticed is you have to be a little bit more methodical. You have to pick your shots a little bit more. The range is a little bit different, the distance is a little bit different. Obviously the punches sting a little bit more.”

20 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2024

Who of these former UFC fighters could get a second chance with the promotion in 2024?

It’s hard to make it to the UFC.

Thousands of professional fighters try every year – and most fail. For a small percentage, however, they sign their names on the dotted line to fight for the biggest MMA promotion in the world.

Sometimes the opportunity comes a bit too soon. Other times, they’re faced with difficult matchups that time proves were bigger challenges than originally anticipated.

When the pink slip comes and a fighter departs the promotion, there is often a phrase they hear on the way out: “Go get a few more wins, and the UFC will consider bringing you back.”

Easier said than done.

For the vast majority, they won’t be back. However, it’s not impossible. A number of fighters have done it over the years. Just look at former UFC flyweight champion Brandon Moreno. He was released from the promotion, built his way back, became a contender, and then won a UFC title.

Current roster members Nicolas Dalby, Dustin Jacoby, Modestas Bukauskas, Kurt Holobaugh, Roosevelt Roberts, and Rhys McKee are among those who have reinforced the possibility.

With the new year upon us, here are 20 former UFC fighters who could return to the promotion in 2024.

Note: Fighters considered for this list had to have competed in at least one UFC bout.

UFC alums Jason Knight, Randy Costa take gloves off for Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA fight

Out of left field, a banger between UFC alums Jason Knight and Randy Costa is on the books for Jorge Masvidal’s promotion.

Two former UFC fighters known for their brawling styles will take the gloves off for a bareknuckle MMA fight in November.

Featherweights [autotag]Jason Knight[/autotag] and [autotag]Randy Costa[/autotag] will collide in a featherweight bout Nov. 10 at Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA at Mississippi Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., the promotion announced Wednesday.

Knight, 31, competes for the first since since his run on “The Ultimate Fighter 31.” Knight competed up a weight class at lightweight. After a quick win over Landon Quinones to advance to the semifinals, Knight was finished with strikes by Kurt Holobaugh in an all-time battle. Those fights were exhibitions, but Knight is 2-1 in MMA since his UFC departure in 2018. He’s also 1-0 in bareknuckle MMA and 1-1 in bareknuckle boxing post-UFC.

Costa, 29, was scheduled to compete Friday at Combat FC 5 but opponent Johnny Campbell withdrew fight day due to medical issues. Costa expressed frustration at lack of fight bookings since his UFC release in 2022. Hours later, he had a fight booked. Costa went 2-4 in six UFC outings from 2019-2022. He is 1-0 since his departure.
