UFC on ABC 5 post-event facts: Ilia Topuria’s main event beatdown makes history

Check out all the facts and figures from UFC on ABC 5, where Ilia Topuria’s main event win was boosted by a rare achievement.

The UFC returned to Florida for the second time this year on Saturday with UFC on ABC 5, which took place at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville and saw eight of 13 bouts go to a decision.

The main event was one of those bouts to go to the judges, but it was a clear result with [autotag]Ilia Topuria[/autotag] (14-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) defeating [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] (18-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) in historic fashion in the form of a lopsided unanimous decision in the matchup between featherweight contenders.

For more on the numbers to come out of the headliner, as well as the rest of the card, check below for MMA Junkie’s post-event facts from UFC on ABC 5.

On this day: Bird, Wilkins battle in ’88 ECF G7; Siegfried, Brown born

On this day in 1987, Boston’s Larry Bird went shot for shot with Atlanta’s Dominique Wilkins in that year’s Eastern Conference Finals.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, legendary Larry Bird went basket for basket with the Atlanta Hawks’ Dominique Wilkins in the final frame of Game 7 of the 1988 Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Boston would somehow squeak out a 118-116 win despite the Human Highlight Film — as Wilkins was often called — scoring 47 points in the contest, while Bird logged 34, 20 of them coming in the fourth quarter. “The basket was like a well, I couldn’t miss,” recalled Wilkins via Uproxx. “He couldn’t miss. That’s the greatest game I’ve ever played in or seen played. It was two guys who just did not want to lose.”

The Celtics won the series against the Hawks to advance to the NBA Finals but would fall to longtime rivals the Los Angeles Lakers in six games.

UFC 284 results: Jack Della Maddalena faceplants and taps Randy Brown in home city

Jack Della Maddalena brought the hometown violence at UFC 284.

[autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] long envisioned a home turf victory on a UFC pay-per-view and Saturday he experienced it.

In front of his home city of Perth, Australia, Della Maddalena (14-2 MMA, 4-0 UFC) clubbed and subbed opponent [autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 10-5 UFC) with a rear-naked choke at 2:13 of Round 1. The fight took place on the main card of UFC 284 at RAC Arena.

Maddalena walked out to a raucous ovation that coincided with a sing-a-long of his walkout song, “TNT” by AC/DC. The party continued all the way through the official reading of the decision.

A “F*ck you, Randy,” chant rained down on Brown after the American welterweight waved off a glove touch with Australia’s Maddalena.

Maddalena was aggressive from the opening bell, as he stalked the quick and rangy Brown. Eventually, his strikes found the mark. A right hook faceplanted Brown, who survived the barrage of follow-up strikes when he gave up his back and neck. Maddalena pivoted from a striking attack to submission, as he tapped Brown with a one-hook-in rear-naked choke.

Pegged by many as one of the biggest breakthrough fighters in 2022, Della Maddalena went 3-0 under the promotion’s banner prior to Saturday. His win streak is now at 14. With the defeat, Brown has a four-fight winning streak snapped.

The up-to-the-minute UFC 284 results include:

  • Jack Della Maddalena def. Randy Brown via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 1, 2:13
  • Justin Tafa def. Parker Porter via knockout (punch) – Round 1, 1:06
  • Jimmy Crute vs. Alonzo Menifield ends in a majority draw (29-27, 28-28, 28-28)
  • Modestas Bukauskas def. Tyson Pedro via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)
  • Josh Culibao def. Melsik Baghdasaryan via submission (rear-naked choke) – Round 2, 2:02
  • Kleydson Rodrigues def. Shannon Ross via TKO (punches) – Round 1, 0:59
  • Jamie Mullarkey def. Francisco Prado via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

The UFC this week makes its second visit to the Australian city of Perth, and there are two title fights at the top of the bill.

UFC 284 takes place Saturday at RAC Arena in Perth, Australia. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN and early prelims on ESPN+.

(Click here to open a PDF of the staff picks grid in a separate window.)

In the main event, lightweight champion [autotag]Islam Makhachev[/autotag] (23-1 MMA, 12-1 UFC) meets featherweight titleholder [autotag]Alexander Volkanovski[/autotag] (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC). Makhachev will put his title on the line for the first time; he hasn’t lost in more than seven years. Volkanovski, who will go after a second concurrent title, hasn’t lost in nearly 10 years.

Makhachev is big favorite at -380 at Tipico Sportsbook; the comeback on Volkanovski is +300. Only one of our 11 editors, writers, radio hosts and videographers are going with him in an upset at a hefty 10-1 clip.

In the co-feature, the interim featherweight title is on the line between [autotag]Yair Rodriguez[/autotag] (14-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) and [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] (18-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC). The two fight for the interim belt just ahead of featherweight champion Volkanovski (25-1 MMA, 12-0 UFC) and his quest for a second belt at lightweight. Rodriguez nearly is a 2-1 favorite, but it’s Emmett who has a narrow 6-5 lead in the picks.

Also on the main card, [autotag]Randy Brown[/autotag] (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) takes on [autotag]Jack Della Maddalena[/autotag] (13-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) at welterweight. Maddalena is a big favorite at -330 and has a blowout at 10-1 from our staff members.

[autotag]Parker Porter[/autotag] (13-7 MMA, 3-2 UFC) meets [autotag]Justin Tafa[/autotag] (5-3 MMA, 2-3 UFC) in a heavyweight matchup. Tafa is a slight favorite at -130, but Porter has the smallest possible edge in the picks at 6-5.

And to open the main card, [autotag]Jimmy Crute[/autotag] (12-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) takes on [autotag]Alonzo Menifield[/autotag] (13-3 MMA, 6-3 UFC) in a light heavyweight fight. Crute nearly is a 2-1 favorite at the betting window, but he has just a slim 6-5 picks lead.

In the MMA Junkie reader consensus picks, Makhachev (51 percent), Rodriguez (62 percent), Maddalena (80 percent), Tafa (66 percent) and Crute (51 percent) are the choices.

Check out all the picks above.
