UFC on ESPN+ 36 results: Mackenzie Dern sweeps, submits Randa Markos

Mackenzie Dern promised a slick submission win over Randa Markos at UFC on ESPN+ 36, and that’s exactly what she delivered.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] promised a slick submission win over [autotag]Randa Markos[/autotag] at UFC on ESPN+ 36 on Saturday, and that’s exactly what she delivered.

Dern (9-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) needed just one opportunity to fight Markos (10-8-1 MMA, 6-7 UFC) on the canvas to get the job done. She took advantage of her best skill set and locked in a fight-ending armbar at the 3:44 mark of the first round, which moved her to 2-0 since returning to MMA after taking a layoff to give birth to her first child.

The women’s strawweight bout was part of the UFC on ESPN+ 36 main card at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. It streamed on ESPN+.

Markos came out looking to push a pace in the striking department. Dern attempted to fire back, but slipped on a kick and fell to her back. Markos made the perplexing choice to follow her to the mat, and Dern instantly went to work, eventually sweeping into top control. It was from there that Dern really put her grappling expertise to work, breaking down Markos’ defense and eventually isolating her left arm into the finish.

Dern was excited about her performance after the fact. The 27-year-old has now picked up three of her four UFC wins by submission, while Markos has dropped consecutive fights for the first time inside the octagon.

“I’m so happy,” Dern said in her post-fight interview with Jon Anik. “I don’t know why the girls want to stay on the ground with me. She came down into my guard, I didn’t take her down. … I’m so happy I got the win representing jiu-jitsu.”

A women’s strawweight matchup is the latest addition to the UFC’s Sept. 12 event.

[autotag]Mackenzie Dern[/autotag] (8-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will face [autotag]Randa Markos[/autotag] (10-8-1 MMA, 6-7-1 UFC) in an event expected to take place in Las Vegas.

Two people with knowledge of the situation confirmed the booking to MMA Junkie after an initial report from MMA Fighting. The people asked to remain anonymous since the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Markos continues to alternate wins and losses during her UFC tenure. The Season 20 “Ultimate Fighter” alum picked up a split decision win over Ashley Yoder this past October, but suffered a unanimous decision loss to Ribas in her most recent outing in March.

With the addition, the UFC’s Sept. 12 lineup now includes:

  • Thiago Santos vs. Glover Teixeira

  • Tyson Nam vs. Matt Schnell

Randa Markos on fighting at UFC Brasilia during global coronavirus pandemic

Randa Markos talks about her experience fighting at UFC on ESPN+ 28 in Brasilia, Brazil, during the coronavirus outbreak.

[autotag]Randa Markos[/autotag] had quite a fight week experience.

With the majority of sports and other MMA organizations canceling their events, the UFC received heavy criticism for going ahead with the UFC on ESPN+ 28 card in Brasilia, Brazil, this past Saturday during the global coronavirus pandemic.

The fighters on the card, with many flying in from other continents, went through an emotional whirlwind with the danger and uncertainty surrounding the event.

Markos, who flew in from Canada, faced Amanda Ribas at the behind-closed-doors event that was limited to cornermen, judges referees and a few UFC staff members.

It certainly wasn’t a typical week for Markos, who said the lead-up to the fight was turbulent.

“I didn’t have any fear until there was threats of canceling the event,” Markos told MMA Junkie. “I realized that things were getting very serious – lots of precautions.

“We’re set forward like no one was allowed to attend the event – only 100 people were allowed in the venue at a time. We had to warm up at the hotel until it was go time. Then we were transported to the venue and able to get ready an hour before – right when the fight before you was over. We were rushed in to fight, then rushed back to the hotel after the fight was over.”

[lawrence-related id=500687,501273,501074]

So far, no coronavirus-related health issues stemming from the event have been reported. But when Markos made her trip back home, she said she didn’t feel well and was surprised nobody would test her.

“Just made it home. Stopped by the coronavirus testing center and they wouldn’t test me. Long flights with a lot of people, not feeling great and I’m not a risk? Okay I guess I’ll be home for two weeks.”

So Markos took matters into her own hands by self-isolating. She said she hasn’t been hit with any other symptoms.

“My condition has not gotten worse,” Markos said. “I don’t believe I have the virus, but I have isolated myself as I was told. But I can’t even get an antibiotic. I’m just trying to stay hydrated and monitor myself.”

The UFC eventually was forced to postpone its next three events: UFC on ESPN+ 29 in London; UFC on ESPN 8 in Columbus, Ohio; and UFC on ESPN+ 30 in Portland, Ore.

Having gone through the experience of competing this past weekend, Markos commended the UFC for finally giving in.

“I think our health is more important right now and the UFC is right to postpone events until things get better,” Markos said.

Although things didn’t go her way against Ribas with a unanimous decision loss, Markos has no regrets.

“Ribas is a tough opponent. I’m not happy with how I did, but besides that I’m happy to be a part of this event,” Markos said. “I don’t think anyone was expecting things to get this bad, but it is what it is and we just need to be smart about it. Being in front of an empty crowd felt like ‘Ultimate Fighter’ days. It was awkward, but nothing I haven’t experienced before.”

UFC on ESPN+ 28 post-event facts: Charles Oliveira sets, ties and extends all-time records

All the notable stats and figures to come out of UFC on ESPN+ 28, which took place in Brasilia, Brazil, and saw Charles Oliveira submit Kevin Lee.

The UFC returned to Brazil on Saturday for what turned out to be a historic event for multiple reasons. The card, which took place at Ginasio Nilson Nelson in Brasilia, was held behind closed doors because of concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

Those concerns didn’t prevent the athletes from stepping into the octagon, though, and in the main event [autotag]Charles Oliveira[/autotag] (29-8 MMA, 17-8 UFC) continued to prove himself as one of the best in the UFC right now when he scored a third-round submission of [autotag]Kevin Lee[/autotag] (18-6 MMA, 11-6 UFC) to extend his winning streak and further etch his name in the record books.

For more on the numbers behind Oliveira’s win, as well as the rest of the card, check below for 50 post-event facts to come out of UFC on ESPN+ 28.

UFC on ESPN+ 28 results: Amanda Ribas earns dominant decision over Randa Markos

Amanda Ribas wanted to stay on the Brazil card after Paige VanZant backed out, and her persistence paid off.

Brazil’s [autotag]Amanda Ribas [/autotag] was determined to fight in her homeland, and her persistence paid off on Saturday.

Ribas (9-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) was originally scheduled to fight Paige Van Zant at UFC on ESPN+ 28 in Brasilia. When VanZant had to pull out due to an arm injury, she requested to move the fight back a month.

But Ribas refused, wanting to keep the bout in Brazil, and Canada’s [autotag]Randa Markos[/autotag] stepped in to take the strawweight fight. In the surreal setting of an empty arena due to COVID-19 concerns, Ribas put on a show, dominating from start to finish for a unanimous decision victory. The judges’ scores were 30-26, 30-25, and 30-25.

“Randa is a really tough girl … thank you to her for (taking) the fight,” Ribas said. “At the moment, UFC said Paige broke her arm. Randa said yes, so thank you.”

Markos (10-8-1 MMA, 6-7-1 UFC) tried to come out aggressive, but it didn’t take long for the strategy to backfire, as she slipped and Ribas ended up in top position. This turned into a rinse-and-repeat process over the fight’s first two rounds. Markos would manage to get back to her feet, and then find herself back on the mat, as Ribas mixed flashy moves like spinning back fists and kicks with the rest of her striking repertoire to set up her takedowns.

In case there was any doubt left, Markos put on a clinic performance in the third round. She scored a takedown, continually improved her position, worked for multiple submissions, and dished out ground-and-pound in between, all the way to the final horn.

With her third career decision victory, Ribas has now won four in a row. Markos has now dropped two of her past three after her seventh career decision loss.
