Rams did not claim any players off waivers

The Rams did not claim any players off waivers Wednesday and only Quindell Johnson was added by another team

The Los Angeles Rams sat sixth in the waiver order following final cuts this week but they didn’t take advantage of their high slot. According to the NFL transaction wire, the Rams did not claim any players off waivers.

A total of 11 teams were awarded players on the waiver wire, with only one former Ram player being claimed: defensive back Quindell Johnson. The Bears claimed Johnson, though the Raiders also put in a claim for him so he was a popular player.

With players such as Logan Bruss, Robert Rochell and others clearing waivers, the Rams can now sign them to the practice squad if they’d like to. Teams can begin assembling their 16-player practice squad Wednesday.

While they didn’t add any players off waivers, the Rams are working to sign kicker Brett Maher, who did not hit the waiver wire because he’s a vested veteran.

The Rams will need to cut a player from their 53-man roster to make room for Maher, or they can simply place Ochaun Mathis on injured reserve to open up a spot.

Rams claim LB Justin Hollins off waivers from Broncos

The Rams filled their final roster spot with former Broncos LB Justin Hollins.

Sean McVay made it very clear on Saturday that the Rams were going to be on the hunt for help in waivers after leaving their roster at only 52 players. And to almost no surprise, the Rams did add a defender.

According to the official transaction wire, the Rams claimed outside linebacker Justin Hollins off waivers from the Broncos. Hollins was a fifth-round pick in 2019 by the Broncos out of Oregon and finished his rookie year with 21 tackles, one sack and two passes defensed. He played 15 games.

Hollins reunites with Brandon Staley, who was his outside linebackers coach in Denver last season. Staley is running the Rams’ defense this year, and he’s familiar with Hollins from their one season together.

Hollins was transitioning to inside linebacker for the Broncos this season, but his best position is outside on the edge. In his final two years at Oregon, he had 11 sacks and 25.5 tackles for loss.

Where are the Rams in the waiver order?

The Rams are pretty far down on the waiver priority order.

After trimming their roster to 52 players on Saturday, the Rams are on the hunt for help. They’ll be scouring the waiver wire for players cut by other teams, potentially submitting a claim if they fill a need on Los Angeles’ roster.

The Rams can’t just add any player they want, however. They have to hope a player they claim isn’t also claimed by a team ahead of them in the waiver order.

That won’t be easy considering where the Rams are in the waiver order. Since it’s based on the draft order from this year, the Rams are 20th in the waiver order. So if any of the 19 teams ahead of them claim the same player, the Rams will not be awarded that player.

Here’s the order of the top 20 in the waiver priority list.

1. Cincinnati Bengals
2. Washington Redskins
3. Detroit Lions
4. New York Giants
5. Miami Dolphins
6. Los Angeles Chargers
7. Carolina Panthers
8. Arizona Cardinals
9. Jacksonville Jaguars
10. Cleveland Browns
11. New York Jets
12. Las Vegas Raiders
13. Indianapolis Colts
14. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
15. Denver Broncos
16. Atlanta Falcons
17. Dallas Cowboys
18. Pittsburgh Steelers
19. Chicago Bears
20. Los Angeles Rams

Rams place Allen and Hager on IR. Who could replace them on 53-man roster?

Sean McVay shared some insight on who could replace Brian Allen and Bryce Hager on the 53-man roster.

The Rams made two expected moves official on Tuesday, placing Brian Allen and Bryce Hager on injured reserve. Sean McVay said Monday that Allen is out for the year, and last week, he said the Rams were planning to place Hager on IR with a shoulder injury.

That opens up two roster spots for the Rams, which they’re expected to fill soon. McVay said on ESPN’s “The Coach McVay Show” Monday night that the Rams would like to add players who have taken the field recently – so that there’s tape available and they’re likely in better shape – suggesting that the Rams might claim someone off waivers and possibly promote a player from the practice squad.

“There’s a couple guys that we feel like in-house are possible candidates to pull up from the practice squad,” McVay said.

As for players they might add in free agency or off waivers, he had this to say:

“There’s always guys out there and Les (Snead) and his group do a great job of kind of keeping an open eye on what those things look like,” he said. “Ideally, you want to be able to find somebody that’s played recently so you have some tape to evaluate and they’re probably in better shape. But I think we’ll probably be more inclined to use, ‘All right, if somebody hits the waiver wire that’s maybe been on a roster recently comes available’ or just using our practice squad to upgrade somebody.”

Chandler Brewer and Jeremiah Kolone are the only offensive linemen on the practice squad, so they would seem to be the obvious candidates to be called up with the Rams lacking depth on the front five. Neither player should inspire much confidence, but at least they provide some insurance if another injury occurs.

As for a potential waiver claim, the Panthers did just release guard Bryan Witzmann, who the Rams might have interest in. He could come in and back up David Edwards and Austin Corbett at guard, who are expected to start in Week 11.

In free agency, John Sullivan would make some sense for the Rams. He was their starter at center last season and although Los Angeles moved on from him this year, that was with the belief that Allen would be a viable replacement.

With Allen gone, it’s possible Sullivan could return to L.A. and take back his starting job in the middle of the line.
