Jonah Jackson left practice with apparent injury, Sean McVay unsure of severity

Jonah Jackson left practice with an apparent injury Tuesday but Sean McVay isn’t sure what happened

Jonah Jackson is going to be a valuable member of the Los Angeles Rams offensive line after signing a three-year deal in free agency, but the team needs him to be available throughout the season. Unfortunately, he was unable to finish practice on Tuesday after suffering an apparent injury.

According to one fan who was in attendance, Jackson left the field with the training staff while holding his arm, which isn’t a good sign. After practice, McVay was asked about Jackson’s status, but he just replied by saying, “I’m not sure.”

Typically, McVay has a much better idea than that of a player’s injury but there’s seemingly still some uncertainty with the Rams’ new left guard.

The Rams signed Jackson in free agency, which then led to Steve Avila moving to center. If Jackson is out for any period of time, the team will keep Avila at center and likely replace Jackson with either Joe Noteboom or Zach Thomas; both players have gotten reps at guard this summer.

Puka Nacua exits game with rib injury, taken straight to locker room

Puka Nacua suffered a rib injury in the second quarter and was in tears coming off the field

Update: Nacua returned to the field for the start of the second half

Puka Nacua has been the Rams’ most consistent and reliable receiver all season long, and he went over 100 yards receiving once again on Sunday against the Browns. Unfortunately, on the catch that put him over the 100-yard mark, he suffered what looked like a serious injury.

Nacua went to the ground hard after making a 20-yard catch, and after rising to his feet, he walked very gingerly off the field and straight to the locker room. He was favoring his right side heavily, appearing to be in significant pain as the trainers helped him to the locker room.

The Rams are saying he’s questionable to return with a rib injury.

According to the FOX broadcast, Nacua was in tears as he came off the field.

Here’s the play where the injury occurred. You can see him land hard on his right side after making the catch.

Nick Scott underwent surgery on broken thumb but could play in Week 18

Nick Scott broke his thumb on the last play of Sunday’s game but could still play in Week 18 against the 49ers.

The Rams have been hit with several injuries in recent weeks, most notably to Ernest Jones and Darrell Henderson Jr. That continued on Sunday against the Ravens with Nick Scott breaking his thumb.

It unfortunately occurred on the last play of the Rams’ 20-19 win, which makes it sting even more. However, after undergoing surgery on Monday, he could put a cast on it and play as early as this Sunday against the 49ers.

“He broke his thumb on the last play of the game,” McVay said Monday. “He’s having surgery today. It is something that he could potentially cast up and play as soon as this week. So, his status will be kind of questionable and up in the air.”

Scott has been the Rams’ third safety all season, playing a career-high 35% of the defensive snaps. He has 42 tackles and two interceptions, also breaking up three passes.

He’s an important special teams player, too, which is how he carved out a role for himself in L.A. as a former seventh-round pick in 2019.

Sebastian Joseph-Day has ankle injury but should be OK

Sebastian Joseph-Day missed practice Monday with an ankle injury but Sean McVay says “he should be OK.”

One of the goals of training camp and the preseason is to get through them without any major injuries. Outside of Cam Akers’ torn Achilles before camp, the Rams have stayed relatively healthy this summer.

Sebastian Joseph-Day tweaked his ankle during the Cowboys scrimmage on Saturday and was held out of practice Monday, but that was mostly as a precaution. It was bothering him so Sean McVay wanted to be smart, keeping him on the sideline when the team returned to practice.

“Sebastian, he just had a little ankle. He should be OK,” McVay said Monday. “We were more being safe with him than anything else from the Cowboys scrimmage. It was just kind of bothering him a little bit. So, we erred on the side of caution.”

Joseph-Day is a key part of the defense, starting right in the middle of the line at nose tackle. Though he was excellent in 2020, he has a real chance to break out this season. The Rams need him to continue stuffing the run, and anything he can offer as a pass rusher will be huge.

With a month to go until Week 1, there’s no sense in rushing him back from this ankle injury. He’s not someone who needs preseason reps, either, so expect Joseph-Day to sit out the Rams’ three exhibition games.

Aaron Donald somehow in ‘no pain’ from torn rib cartilage: ‘I’ll be ready come Saturday’

It sure sounds like Aaron Donald will be out there against the Packers on Saturday.

The Los Angeles Rams were forced to finish Saturday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks without their best player on the field. Aaron Donald suffered a rib injury that took him off the field and into the locker room, though he did return to the sideline twice.

It was later reported that Donald tore rib cartilage, which is a painful injury; Cam Akers missed a pair of games with a similar injury earlier this season. Donald isn’t like most humans, though. He’s built differently.

On Wednesday, he told reporters that he has “no pain” from the injury and fully expects to play against the Packers on Saturday. The only thing that’s sore is his side, but he wasn’t interested in talking about the injury all afternoon.

Given their opponent this weekend, the high-scoring Packers, the Rams need all hands on deck. Donald is the most important player on their top-ranked defense and after the scare he gave everyone last weekend, it’s highly encouraging that he’s on track to play against Green Bay.

This season, Donald recorded 12.5 sacks and a league-high 98 pressures, dominating up front once again.

Aaron Donald suffers rib injury, questionable to return

Aaron Donald was taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

Aaron Donald has never missed a game due to injury in his seven-year career, proving to be one of the most durable players in the league. But on Saturday against the Seahawks, he suffered a rib injury in the third quarter and was in visible pain.

He was evaluated by the training staff and immediately taken to the locker room, as he was seen struggling to catch his breath without wincing in pain. The Rams announced Donald as being questionable to return, though it was announced in the press box that he’s doubtful.

Here’s a look at when the injury occurred, showing Donald slow to get up and holding his chest area.

Donald had two sacks and three tackles before leaving the game, performing like his usually dominant self.

Jared Goff’s status for Week 17 uncertain due to thumb injury

Sean McVay didn’t want to speculate on whether Jared Goff will be available for the season finale against Arizona.

Jared Goff didn’t play particularly well against the Seahawks on Sunday, but he did show remarkable toughness to simply finish the game. In the fourth quarter, he hit his throwing hand on a helmet, which dislocated this thumb.

Goff was seen popping it back into place between plays, never missing a single snap in the game. He was unfortunately unable to lead the Rams to a miraculous comeback win, but Goff continued throwing the ball and connecting with receivers despite his injured thumb.

After the 20-9 loss, Sean McVay wouldn’t speculate on Goff’s status for Week 17. He isn’t sure whether Goff will be able to play but did commend his toughness to finish the afternoon without missing time, confirming that Goff did dislocate his thumb.

It all comes down to Week 17 for the Rams, needing either a win over the Cardinals or a loss by the Bears to secure a playoff berth. Not having Goff would be devastating, forcing John Wolford – who’s never taken a regular-season snap in his career – onto the field as the starting quarterback.

Goff hasn’t played well this year, but he gives the Rams the best chance to win next week against Arizona.

Rams injury report: Okoronkwo, Hollins questionable vs. Jets

Three players are questionable for the Rams, but Sean McVay expects all of them to play against the Jets.

A COVID-19 scare on Thursday caused the Rams to take extra precautions leading up to this weekend’s game against the New York Jets, keeping five players out of the final two practices of the week.

Bobby Evans and Nick Scott were placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday and have been ruled out for Sunday’s game, while Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, Justin Hollins and Brian Allen remained away from the team to close out the week.

Okoronkwo, Hollins and Allen are all listed as questionable after missing practice Friday, though Sean McVay expects them to play as long as they test negative and remain asymptomatic.

On the Jets’ side, Jamison Crowder is the only player with an injury designation. He’s questionable with a calf injury. If he’s unable to play, it’ll be a big blow to the Jets offense, given his impact at wide receiver.

Kickoff on Sunday is set for 1:05 p.m. PT at SoFi Stadium.

Terrell Lewis’ status for Sunday is TBD despite being back to full speed

Terrell Lewis is expected to be a full participant all week but his status for Sunday’s game is still up in the air.

Terrell Lewis hasn’t played since Week 11 due to injury, missing the last three games. The rookie experienced some swelling in his knee after the Rams’ win over the Bucs and needed to have it drained, thus sidelining him for a few weeks.

He didn’t have an injury designation going into last week’s game against the Patriots, but he was still inactive – which would technically make him a healthy scratch. Leading up to Sunday’s matchup with the Jets, his status is still up in the air.

Though he wasn’t on the injury report to open the week Wednesday, meaning he was a full participant with no restrictions, he’s not certain to play against New York. Sean McVay likes the progress Lewis has made but won’t commit to him suiting up Sunday.

“He’s doing good. We expect him to be back to full participation,” McVay said. “What that means as far as for his status for the game is to be determined. We have a lot of depth at that spot, so we’ll see how the week goes, but that’s a good thing for us.”

The Rams have gotten excellent play out of Leonard Floyd and Justin Hollins recently, lessening the urgency and need for Lewis to return. Not to mention, they just added Derek Rivers a couple of weeks ago and got Ogbonnia Okoronkwo back, strengthening the depth at edge rusher.

The Rams have no need to rush Lewis back if there’s still some concern, especially against the Jets in Week 15.

Robert Woods sits out first practice with thigh injury, still expected to play vs. Jets

Robert Woods’ thigh was bothering him Wednesday so the Rams held him out of practice.

After playing last Thursday night, the Los Angeles Rams had a few extra days to rest and recover before their Week 15 game against the New York Jets. And considering there were no notable injuries to come out of their win over the Patriots, the injury report to open this week was light.

The only player to be hindered by an injury was Robert Woods, who sat out the first practice with a thigh issue. Sean McVay isn’t concerned about it, though, saying it was merely a precaution after Woods’ thigh started bothering him.

“His thigh was bothering him a little bit, so he didn’t participate,” McVay said. “I don’t expect it to affect his game status at all, but with a player like him you want to be smart. Rather be safe than sorry with him.”

Aaron Donald had a scheduled rest day, as he typically does on Wednesdays. Nsimba Webster missed practice due to personal reasons, McVay said, though he didn’t provide any further details on the punt returner beyond that.
