NFC playoff picture: Rams need a miracle to make postseason

The outlook isn’t great for the Rams’ chances of making the playoffs.

The Rams already faced an uphill climb to the postseason entering Week 15, needing to win at least two of their final three games and get help from other teams. Unfortunately, their odds of making the playoffs plummeted after losing to the Cowboys on Sunday afternoon.

They were blown out 44-21 at AT&T Stadium, snapping a two-game winning streak. To make matters even worse, the Vikings also beat the Chargers, giving them a two-game lead over the Rams in the wild-card race.

With only two weeks remaining, that puts Los Angeles in an absolutely terrible spot in the playoff picture. Here’s how the standings currently look.

1. NFC West: Seahawks (11-3)

2. NFC North: Packers (11-3)

3. NFC South: Saints (10-3)

4. NFC East: Cowboys (7-7)

5. Wild card: 49ers (11-3)

6. Wild card: Vikings (10-4)

In the hunt

Rams (8-6)
Eagles (7-7)

In order for the Rams to make the playoffs, they must beat the 49ers in Week 16, as well as the Cardinals in the season finale. That won’t be enough by itself, though. The Vikings must also lose to the Packers next week and then the Bears in the final week of the season.

That seems highly unlikely to happen, especially after the way the Rams played on Sunday in Dallas. They looked slow, lacked precision and didn’t play the way they did one week ago against the Seahawks.

According to the New York Times playoff simulator, the Rams’ odds sit at 5%. Needless to say, it’s looking like they’ll be watching games from home in January.

Rams Week 15 rooting guide: Who should L.A. be pulling for Sunday?

The Rams need some help from three teams on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Rams have found themselves in a position where they can’t simply win the rest of their games and get into the playoffs. They need a little help from their friends – or foes.

With the Vikings one game ahead of the Rams in the wild-card race and Seattle two games up, Los Angeles needs both teams to lose at least one or two games in the final three weeks. Getting any help in Week 15 is going to be difficult, though.

Before we get into which teams the Rams should be rooting for, here’s a look at the current playoff picture.

  1. NFC West: 49ers (11-2)
  2. NFC North: Packers (10-3)
  3. NFC South: Saints (10-3)
  4. NFC East: Cowboys (6-7)
  5. Wild card: Seahawks (10-3)
  6. Wild card: Vikings (9-4)

In the hunt

Rams (8-5)
Bears (7-6)
Eagles (6-7)

Looking at the standings, it’s pretty clear that the Rams need the Vikings, Seahawks and maybe even the Packers to lose. The 49ers are three games up, so they’d need to lose all three of their remaining games – one of which is against the Rams – in order for L.A. to have a chance.

In Week 15, the Rams need help from the Chargers, Panthers and Bears. The Chargers are hosting the Vikings in Los Angeles, the Panthers are taking on the Seahawks in Charlotte and the Bears will visit Lambeau Field.

If the Chargers, Panthers and Bears all win, and the Rams also knock off the Cowboys, the Rams will be tied with the Vikings (and hold the tiebreaker based on common games), one game behind the Seahawks for the fifth seed and one game back of the Packers – who are currently leading the NFC North but could be caught by the Vikings.

Final score prediction for Rams vs. Cowboys in Week 15

Can the Rams stay in the hunt in the NFC playoff race with a win?

Before taking on two division rivals in their last two games, the Los Angeles Rams will pay the Dallas Cowboys a visit in Week 15. It’s a rematch of last year’s divisional round, a game the Rams won to advance to the conference championship.

Each of the last three meetings between the Rams and Cowboys has been decided by one score, however, so these two teams are not only familiar with each other, but their games often come down to the wire.

Entering this one, the Rams have won two straight, while Dallas is on a three-game losing skid. Yet, despite the Cowboys being two games behind the Rams and looking like a non-playoff team the last three weeks, they’re in better shape than Los Angeles is.

The Rams badly need this win, sitting one game behind the Vikings in the wild-card race. The Cowboys look like an inferior opponent, but on paper, they’re one of the more talented teams in the league; cohesively as a team, though, it’s a different story.

The Rams should take advantage of Dallas’ issues at linebacker, with Leighton Vander Esch out and Sean Lee questionable. The Cowboys missed 19 tackles alone in Week 14 against the Bears, and having backup linebackers on the field won’t help their current trend of missed tackles.

Picking on Dallas’ cornerbacks isn’t necessarily a wise approach, especially with Byron Jones on one side. Chidobe Awuzie can be beaten by double-moves and Jourdan Lewis only became a starting nickel corner recently, so the Rams’ wide receivers should have a good game.

Defensively, the Rams have the cornerbacks to match Dallas’ receiving corps of Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup and Randall Cobb. Cory Littleton is rangy at inside linebacker and the Rams’ defensive front is stout, which doesn’t bode well for Ezekiel Elliott and the Cowboys’ ground game.

On paper, this is a game the Rams should win. But as we often see in the NFL, anyone can beat any other team in a given week. There are no cakewalks in this league and the Cowboys – who very easily could make the playoffs – certainly aren’t an easy matchup.

Still, the Rams will leave Jerry’s World with a victory, putting them at 9-5 with only two games left.

Final score prediction: Rams 28, Cowboys 24

Sean McVay says he’s ‘learning a lot’ from overcoming Rams’ injuries

The Rams have gotten excellent contributions from backups after starters went down with injuries.

In the last two years, the Rams have had excellent luck on the injury front. They’ve suffered very few significant injuries, not landing many key starters on injured reserve. That’s partly due to luck, but it’s also a testament to the job the training staff does with players.

This season hasn’t been that way, though. Aqib Talib and John Johnson were both placed on injured reserve, and Joseph Noteboom and Brian Allen suffered season-ending injuries. It’s forced the Rams to thrust backups into starting roles, which has been a challenge for Sean McVay.

Obviously no coach wants to have to deal with injuries, but McVay has learned from this challenge.

“It’s been different, but it’s been something that inevitably you have to be able to deal with. I think it’s been a great learning experience for myself. You continue to gain the appreciation for the accumulation of experience as you just learn and navigate through the inevitable – good and bad times that come with being in this role. I think what it does give you is a perspective and an appreciation for how healthy we’ve been able to stay the first couple of years. Then when you look around, some of these things are not really preventable and that’s what you have to be able to deal with. I think it’s been a great opportunity to see guys continue to get opportunities, maximize those chances that they’ve gotten and us to work through some things that we haven’t had a chance to before. I know I’m learning a lot and you kind of appreciate it. It certainly gives you a better perspective on what’s been really, some unique things that we’ve been able to have taken place over our first couple of years – in terms of the health that we’ve had.”

In addition to those other players landing on injured reserve, the Rams have also been without Gerald Everett for the last two weeks, and he’ll miss Sunday’s game, as well. Rob Havenstein has been sidelined with a knee injury, as well, and is doubtful for Week 15.

Bobby Evans has played extremely well in Havenstein’s place, and the last two weeks, Tyler Higbee has caught seven passes for at least 100 yards each game. It’s contributions like those that make McVay appreciate the Rams’ depth.

NFL Week 15 picks: Who the experts are taking in Rams at Cowboys

The Rams are favored in the eyes of experts this weekend.

The Rams come into Week 15 at 8-5, visiting the 6-7 Cowboys. Dallas is in better position to make the playoffs, but Los Angeles has been the much better team in the last two weeks. Having won two in a row compared to the Cowboys’ three-game losing streak, it’s easy to see why the Rams are favored in this one.

At BetMGM, the Rams are 1.5-point favorites over the Cowboys on the road. In the eyes of the experts, they also have the advantage. According to NFL Pick Watch, which tracks expert picks each week, 73% of the pundits are taking the Rams to win straight-up on Sunday afternoon.

That’s a significant margin and it shows how Los Angeles is viewed by the experts right now. The Rams may not be a perfect team at the moment, but the defense is playing extremely well and the offense is finding its groove at the perfect time. Jared Goff is getting much better protection from his offensive line and his confidence is skyrocketing as a result.

This matchup with the Cowboys is highly likely to be a close matchup, given the way their last three meetings have gone. They’ve all been decided by one score with Los Angeles going 2-1.

Rams’ 3 biggest causes for concern vs. Cowboys on Sunday

The Rams have to be careful not to let Amari Cooper go off.

Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Rams enter Week 15 with a better record than the Cowboys, but Los Angeles needs a win more desperately than Dallas does. This isn’t going to be an easy victory by any means, either.

The Rams have to be careful not to overlook a talented Cowboys team that currently sits at 6-7. Here are the three biggest concerns Los Angeles faces on Sunday.

Slowing down Ezekiel Elliott

The Cowboys offense doesn’t go through Elliott as much as it did in years past, but he’s still a focal point. He can beat a defense on the ground or as a receiver, and while he’s not breaking off big runs this year, he does wear opponents down by consistently picking up chunks of yardage.

The Rams have been excellent against the run this season, except for the Ravens game, and the defense will need to be on top of its game Sunday afternoon. Missed tackles on Elliott will prove to be costly and will keep the Cowboys offense on the field longer than the Rams would like.

Sean McVay on facing Cowboys offense: ‘They’re a nightmare’

Sean McVay knows how difficult it is to defend the Rams.

Sean McVay has faced the Cowboys twice since he took over as head coach of the Rams, and each time, the game was close and competitive. The Rams beat Dallas 30-22 in the divisional round last year, and in 2017, they won 35-30 at AT&T Stadium.

He knows what a handful Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper can be for a defense, and on Sunday, he’ll get another taste of that. There have been some changes on the Cowboys’ offense over the years, but for the most part, it’s the same unit Los Angeles faced in the playoffs.

Despite struggling in recent weeks, the Cowboys are ninth in scoring, first in yards, first in passing and 10th in rushing. In other words, it’s a well-balanced and effective attack.

To McVay, the Cowboys are a “nightmare” and a “real problem” to defend.

“I think Amari Cooper’s having a great year,” McVay said. “You look at just some of the improvements of their receivers as a whole – they’ve got three legitimate receivers. I think Dak’s making great decisions, they’ve always had a great O-line and Zeke’s résumé speaks for himself. Offensively, they’re a nightmare, they’re a real problem to deal with.”

One of the biggest changes the Cowboys made since last time these two teams played was replacing Scott Linehan with Kellen Moore as the team’s offensive coordinator. That’s led to more creativity and better play calling for the Cowboys, which has helped elevate the play of Prescott and Cooper, in particular.

Moore has left McVay impressed so far, and even a bit jealous of the success he’s had in his first season calling plays.

“It’s been impressive. You look at his first year doing it, the success that they’ve had. I wish I had that kind of success that early, it was impressive,” McVay said. “What he’s done, he’s done a good job putting the players in good spots. I think there’s a comfort level. They’ve got an identity, I think that’s as important as anything. The plays are one thing, but when you put your players in position to make plays, that’s the most important. It seems like he’s had a great feel for the game. I’ve been really impressed with him.”

The Rams are facing a lot of pressure this week, needing a win to keep pace in the NFC playoff hunt. A loss and a win by the Vikings over the Chargers would all but end any chance of the Rams making the postseason, facing a two-game deficit with only two to play.

McVay doesn’t see it as pressure, but he and the Rams know the urgency level has been taken up a notch.

“I think every single week, we don’t necessarily look at it as pressure, but it’s an opportunity for us,” McVay said. “It’s a great opportunity to go to Dallas, it’s going to be a great environment, great atmosphere. It’s a very good football team – they’ve got great coaches, great players. We know what the challenge is and we’ve got to have a great week of preparation to see if we can build on a little bit of the momentum that we do have. But, knowing that it’s one game at a time and what we did in the previous weeks won’t help us. We’ve got to be ready to show up when kickoff comes on Sunday.”

With their last three games being decided by eight points or fewer, this matchup is likely to come down to the wire, too.

Will the Rams-Cowboys Week 15 game be on TV in your area?

Check the map to see if Rams-Cowboys will be on FOX in your area on Sunday afternoon.

Despite being in different divisions, the Rams and Cowboys have grown accustomed to playing against each other. They’ve already met twice since Sean McVay took over in L.A. two years ago, including last season’s divisional round in the playoffs.

They’ll play again on Sunday afternoon in Dallas with both teams fighting for their playoff lives. Despite being a game below .500, the Cowboys are in better shape postseason-wise because of how bad the NFC East is, while the Rams may need to finish 11-5 to have a chance.

This is a marquee matchup between two explosive teams, and it’s surely one fans will want to tune in for. Check the map from 506 Sports below to find out if you’ll get the game in your area.

Safe to say, unless you’re in Northern California, the Pacific Northwest or the Atlanta area, Rams-Cowboys will be on FOX in the late window for you. Kickoff is set for 4:25 p.m. ET from AT&T Stadium.

The Rams come in on a two-game winning streak, while the Cowboys have lost three in a row. Under McVay, the Rams are 5-0 against teams entering on a three-game losing skid, which is bad news for Dallas.

Rams at Cowboys: 5 key things to know for pivotal Week 15 matchup

Under Sean McVay, the Rams have never lost to a team on a three-game losing streak.

The Rams and Cowboys will meet for the third time in the last three years on Sunday, and for the second time since January. Los Angeles has won the last two meetings between these teams, including a divisional round matchup at the Coliseum.

This isn’t a playoff game like the last one was, but it does have huge postseason implications for both teams. A loss by the Rams could put them two games back of the Vikings with two games to play, while a Cowboys loss will put further emphasis on Week 16’s showdown with the Eagles.

Here are five things to know about this matchup entering Sunday.

McVay’s Rams have never lost to team on 3-game losing streak

The Rams don’t often lose to bad teams under Sean McVay. Yes, they should have beaten the Buccaneers in Week 4 and probably the Steelers in Week 10, but losses to teams on losing skids never happens on McVay’s watch.

According to Gil Brandt, the Rams are 5-0 under McVay against teams currently on a three-game losing streak. They’ve won those games by an average of 20 points per game, and it just so happens the Cowboys have lost three in a row.

This sets up very nicely for the Rams in Week 15.

Rams open as 2.5-point underdogs vs. struggling Cowboys in Week 15

The Rams and Cowboys are heading in opposite directions, but it’s Dallas as the favorite in Week 15.

For most of the season, the Rams and Cowboys were on similar paths. They both started 3-0 before going on three-game losing streaks, suffering one embarrassing loss each: Dallas to the Jets and the Rams to Tampa Bay.

They got things back on track by winning their next two, but the Rams have since pulled away from Dallas since both were 6-4. The Cowboys have lost three straight to fall to 6-7, while Los Angeles has won two of its last three to get to 8-5.

Yet, the Rams still enter their Week 15 matchup with Dallas as underdogs. According to BetMGM, the Cowboys are favored by 2.5 points at home over the Rams. The over/under is set at 47.5, the third-highest total of Week 15 thus far.

This is somewhat of a surprise after seeing how the last two weeks have gone for each team. The Cowboys lost by 11 points to the Bills at home on Thanksgiving, and they followed it up with a 31-24 loss to the Bears on Thursday night – a game that was much more lopsided than the score indicates.

The Rams blew out the Cardinals in Week 13, 34-7, and dominated the Seahawks at home on Sunday night, 28-12. They look like the team we saw at the beginning of the season, finding a groove offensively and still playing at a high level on defense.

Dallas has a lot of talent on its roster, but the Rams certainly look like the better team at this point in the season despite being underdogs at AT&T Stadium.
