Watch highlights and replays from Rams-Cowboys joint practice

Watch some of the best plays and recaps from the Rams and Cowboys’ joint practice.

The Rams set up three joint practices this summer as part of their training camp schedule, holding one session with the Dallas Cowboys and two with the Las Vegas Raiders. Sean McVay loves the value that comes with practicing against other teams, putting in good work in a controlled setting where injuries are easier to avoid than they are in the preseason.

The Rams held their practice with the Cowboys in Oxnard on Saturday, ratcheting up the level of competition, even if guys weren’t full-on tackling each other on the field. They went through special teams drills, individual reps and team sessions, both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11.

Both teams won their share of reps, but the Rams got a taste of Dallas’ receiving corps, while the Cowboys’ secondary also realized just how talented Los Angeles’ receivers are.

If you missed the practice, check out some highlights and full video recaps below.

Rams excited for starters to compete against Cowboys on Saturday

The Rams will hold a practice with the Cowboys on Saturday, which will essentially replace a preseason game for the starters.

The Rams have had seven training camp practices so far and even though they’ve gotten in some great work against each other on the field, they’ll get a new challenge this weekend when they head to Oxnard. They have a joint practice scheduled with the Cowboys on Saturday, giving player the chance to face an opponent who isn’t wearing the same helmet.

Sean McVay loves joint practices because they take the level of competition up a notch while still being held in a controlled environment where injuries can usually be avoided. There will likely be a scrimmage of some sort where it’ll be close to a game setting, while also allowing players to go one-on-one against Dallas’ top playmakers.

McVay shared a little bit about what he hopes to get out of Saturday’s session, saying it’ll essentially be a substitute for a preseason game for the team’s starters, who are expected to sit out the preseason.

“We’ll implement a lot of different situations. Coach (Mike) McCarthy has been great about putting together a good practice plan that’s going to be reflective of us getting a lot of work. And it will be focused on a lot of our top guys,” McVay said Wednesday. “We kind of look at it as in a lot of instances, these practices kind of serve as supplemental or substitutes, if you will, for the preseason games because of the approach we take. It’ll be a lot of different things and good competitive work trying to keep our guys safe but also get a chance to go against somebody else – different defensive scheme, different offensive scheme. Get a chance to go against ‘Bones’ (John Fassel) and the things he does in the kicking game, so that’ll be fun.”

This will also be Raheem Morris’ first chance to call plays against a different offense than the Rams’, which is an important step for the new defensive coordinator. He’s excited about this opportunity and the increased level of competitiveness on the field.

“We’re going to get great work,” Morris said. “Obviously Coach Sean, he emphasizes the ones and those groups. We’ll get a chance to communicate with our opposing team and tell those guys what we want to do and how we want to go get it accomplished as far as the physicality, as far as the tempo, as far as pushing it to a game-like atmosphere as close as possible, really getting great work that day. Although we get it here amongst each other, the last two days have been great, (but) it’s nothing like going against another color, nothing like going against another team and going out there and seeing different plays and different types of deals to get it going.”

The Rams defense is expected to be one of the best in the league, so Matthew Stafford has benefited from going up against them every day in practice. However, as good as it is to compete against Aaron Donald, Jalen Ramsey and Darious Williams, he’s looking forward to taking on the Cowboys this weekend.

“Just a look at another team, it’ll be a lot of fun,” he said. “I played the Cowboys quite a few times. There’s some new coaches there and some new schemes. So, that’ll be fun to go out there and compete against another team that’s really talented. Year in and year out, a really good competitive team. We’ll just kind of see where we are at that point.”

Stafford and the rest of the Rams’ starters will sit out the preseason, so this joint practice with the Cowboys, as well as the session against the Raiders later in camp will be critical. Those will almost replicate game settings ahead of the regular season, preparing him for what he’ll face in Week 1 against the Bears.

Rams and Cowboys set date for joint practice during training camp

The Rams and Cowboys’ joint practice is official, and it’ll be held in August.

Sean McVay announced during OTAs that the Los Angeles Rams planned to hold joint practices with the Dallas Cowboys and Las Vegas Raiders, which is exciting news for fans of all three teams. However, Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy pumped the brakes on the idea of his team practicing against the Rams, opting not to say definitively that the joint practice was going to happen.

Well, it’s officially a go after the Cowboys revealed their training camp schedule Thursday. On it is a Rams-Cowboys practice on August 7 in Oxnard, home of the Cowboys’ camp. The time of that practice is not yet determined, however.

The Rams haven’t said when their practice with the Raiders will be held, or whether it will be in Thousand Oaks or at the Raiders’ facility. But with the Rams facing the Raiders in Week 2 of the preseason on Aug. 21, it’s reasonable to think their joint practice will be in the days leading up to that game.

Jared Goff’s passing chart shows he wisely took what the Cowboys gave him

Jared Goff didn’t take many deep shots on Sunday, but he made the Cowboys pay for their poor game plan.

Jared Goff’s passing line against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night was hardly one of the most impressive of his career. He threw for 275 yards, but he had zero touchdowns and an interception, resulting in a passer rating of 79.4.

His completion rate of 64.5% was plenty good enough, spreading the ball around nicely by hitting eight different receivers with Robert Woods pacing the bunch at six catches for 105 yards.

Overall, it was a clean performance by the Rams quarterback with very few mistakes made on the field. His interception came as he was hit in the helmet by Aldon Smith, Gerald Everett dropped a pass over the middle and some of his incompletions were simple throw-aways when there was nothing available.

Take a look at his passing chart from Next Gen Stats, which shows how Goff took what the Cowboys defense gave him: a lot of screens, a lot of quick outs and very little over the middle.

Goff’s best throw of the night was his 31-yarder to Van Jefferson down the left sideline – a perfect drop-in-the-bucket toss that he made look easy. Other than that, Goff didn’t have a completion beyond 15 yards downfield.

And that’s OK.

The Cowboys limited big plays and forced Goff to throw underneath passes for shorter gains. Fortunately, guys like Robert Woods and Tyler Higbee did a good job picking up yards after the catch, making Dallas pay for playing it safe.

Although Goff had the lowest average intended air yards (4.3), according to Next Gen Stats, it’s hard to fault him for that. Take a look at this play, for instance. If the Cowboys are going to leave Woods wide open on a screen pass, how can you fault Goff for taking it and picking up 31 yards?

The same can be said about this out route to Woods, where he was once again left open because the Cowboys played off coverage with the corner giving him nearly 10 yards of cushion.

Goff took what the defense gave him and made them pay. It’s Dallas’ fault for not adjusting, giving Goff easy throws throughout the night.

The pickings may not be as easy for Goff in Week 2. The Eagles will probably watch the tape from Rams-Cowboys and learn that letting Goff dink-and-dunk his way down the field isn’t the way to go.

If that’s the case, Goff has to hit on some passes in the intermediate-to-deep range to keep the defense honest.

Rams jump into top 10 of power rankings after statement win vs. Cowboys

The Rams are moving on up, checking in as one of three NFC West teams in the top 10.

It was hard to find any power rankings that had the Rams inside the top 15 this offseason, primarily because of their disappointing 9-7 finish in 2019 and the number of departures they had in the spring. There simply wasn’t much confidence in this team among analysts, leading to lower placements in power rankings.

That changed this week, though. In Touchdown Wire’s first power rankings of the 2020 season, the Rams were slotted inside the top 10 after beating the Cowboys in Week 1. Doug Farrar put them at No. 8, giving the NFC West three teams in the top 10.

It wasn’t pretty, but the Rams christened SoFi Stadium with a 20-17 Sunday night win over the Cowboys. Sean McVay kept Jared Goff close to the sticks to counter what was an impressive Dallas pass rush, and Goff completed 20 of 31 passes for 275 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. It was more about time of possession (the Rams had the ball for 35:38 in the game) and keeping Dallas’ potentially explosive offense off the field. It was also about this HIGHLY questionable offensive pass interference call on Cowboys receiver Michael Gallup late in the game (Jalen Ramsey sold it well), but the Cowboys had other opportunities, and they couldn’t take advantage.

The 49ers were the lowest-ranked NFC West team, coming in at No. 18 in the power rankings. The Cardinals were ranked 10th after knocking off San Francisco, while the Seahawks are No. 4 on the list.

It may not have been a dominant win over the Cowboys, but it was a statement victory for the Rams, nonetheless. The defense held Dallas to only 17 points, while the offense was more balanced with 35 carries by running backs and 31 pass attempts by Jared Goff.

The result was 422 yards of total offense and a 20-17 victory.

It’s a good start for Los Angeles, and it will try to keep things going in Week 2 against the 0-1 Philadelphia Eagles after their loss to Washington in the season opener.

Watch: Aaron Donald takes out two linemen at once with ferocious bull rush

Aaron Donald wrecked two Cowboys linemen with one ridiculous move.

Aaron Donald is not your average defensive tackle, and it’s why he’s destined for the Hall of Fame after he retires from the NFL. He once again showed his incredible ability on Sunday night against the Cowboys, dominating on a number of plays.

He finished with four tackles, one sack and four quarterback hits, but he may not have had a better play than his bull rush that took out two Cowboys linemen at once. Donald rushed straight at the center Joe Looney, casually tossing him into right guard Zack Martin and sending both players off their feet.

He didn’t get the sack, but Donald nearly got to Dak Prescott for the takedown before the quarterback got rid of the ball. Take a look (it’s the second clip in the video below, though the first is equally impressive).

As it’s often said, Donald is just not fair. The Cowboys had few answers for the two-time Defensive Player of the Year, as is typically the case for opposing linemen.

Rams players celebrate win over Cowboys on Twitter

It was a great team win by the Rams on Sunday night against Dallas.

The oddsmakers viewed the Rams as the underdogs against the Cowboys in their Week 1 matchup at home, but it was Los Angeles that came out on top Sunday night. The Rams knocked off Mike McCarthy in his Cowboys debut, 20-17 in Inglewood.

The players undoubtedly celebrated afterwards in the locker room and probably will continue to after leaving the stadium, but they also shared their thoughts on Twitter after starting 1-0. The common theme: It was a great way to break in the new stadium.

Here are some reactions from players on social media.

Gerald Everett left the game with a back injury and did not return. He didn’t share an update on his health, but he did say the pass he dropped is going to haunt him in his sleep. He is happy to be 1-0, though, as is the rest of the team.

Malcolm Brown, who was arguably the star of the game for the Rams, shared a post on Instagram celebrating the victory – as well as his two touchdowns, presumably. It was a great start to his season as he attempts to fill the shoes left by Todd Gurley.

Watch: Rams take the field for Week 1 at SoFi Stadium

The Rams are back in action.

The Rams will finally get to show off their brand new stadium on Sunday night against the Dallas Cowboys, officially opening SoFi Stadium. They ran out of the tunnel to an empty building with no fans and only cardboard cutouts, but it was a special moment, nonetheless.

Here’s a look at their entrance on the field, running through a tunnel of smoke and two big ram heads with glowing eyes.

The Rams are wearing their bone uniforms with blue socks, while the Cowboys are wearing their navy jerseys with silver pants.

Rams flip from 2.5-point underdogs to 1-point favorites vs. Cowboys

The Rams are now favored over the Cowboys.

Ever since the 2020 regular-season schedule was released, the Rams have been underdogs to the Cowboys in Week 1. That is, until now.

Just before kickoff on Sunday night, the line at BetMGM flipped from Rams +2.5 to Rams -1. It’s not a change that happens often, but it is certainly notable. It’s likely because of all the bets coming in on the Rams to cover the spread with 2.5 points, which caused the oddsmakers to shift the line more in the Rams’ favor to balance out the action on both sides.

There wasn’t any significant news that came out before the game to cause this big of a change, either, which points to the fact that there was probably an overwhelming amount of action coming in on the Rams getting 2.5 points.

Anyone who likes the Cowboys to win this game is now able to get a more favorable line with them getting one point instead of giving up 2.5.
