Sean McVay isn’t ready to rule out Cam Akers ‘by any stretch’

Cam Akers is doing what he can to be ready for Sunday’s season finale after spraining his ankle two weeks ago.

In the last two weeks, both of the Rams’ top running backs suffered high ankle sprains. First, Cam Akers got hurt in Week 15 against the New York Jets, though he was still able to finish the game in what was a valiant effort by the rookie. Then a week later, Henderson went down, with his injury landing him on injured reserve – a minimum three-week absence.

Henderson is obviously out, but Sean McVay isn’t ready to declare Akers out, too. There’s still hope the rookie will be able to play in the season finale against Arizona. Akers missed the first two practices of the week, but he’s been working on the side and has looked good, according to McVay.

“He looked good moving around early on,” McVay said. “He didn’t participate in practice, but he was getting a workout in. You guys saw him on the early parts of the field, so he’s feeling good. I certainly am not ready to rule my man Cam out by any stretch.”

Practice is critical for young players, especially for rookies who didn’t have a normal offseason of work. That made things more difficult for Akers throughout the summer, but he’s since emerged as the team’s best running back.

McVay isn’t minimizing the importance of practice, but he would feel fine with Akers playing Sunday even if his time on the practice field this week is minimal. In all likelihood, Akers will be a game-time decision, based on the coach’s comments.

“You’d ideally like that, but I think with the amount of experience that he’s gotten as of late, if you can have him in any capacity, you feel good about that,” McVay said. “I do trust the way that he’s preparing, and I know (RBs coach) Thomas (Brown) is meeting with him and getting some above-the-neck mental reps. So, you’d like to be able to get him some physical reps, but I think the approach that we’ll take this week will be, use every moment that we have leading up to game time to make sure that you get him as healthy as possible and let’s not put him at risk for any potential setbacks. So, if he is able to go, it’ll be one of those deals that we’ll find out on game day, but don’t expect it to be any physical reps for him this week throughout the course of practice.”

If Akers is unable to go, Malcolm Brown and Xavier Jones will have to step up behind John Wolford. Brown is experienced, but Jones is an undrafted rookie. Ideally, Akers will be RB1 on Sunday. But in the event that he’s sidelined again, the Rams feel good about Brown and Jones – and maybe even Raymond Calais – coming through in his absence.

John Wolford’s start vs. Cardinals will be an NFL first in the Super Bowl era

John Wolford will make history just by earning the start against Arizona on Sunday.

It’s rare that a quarterback as inexperienced as John Wolford gets thrown into a starting role this late into the season with the team still fighting for playoff positioning. In fact, a start like Wolford’s hasn’t happened in at least 54 years.

According to ESPN Stats and Info, Wolford will become the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era, which dates back to 1966, to make his first career start in the final game of a season with his team still having a chance to make the playoffs.

The Rams’ playoff hopes are still very much alive, needing either a win over the Cardinals or a loss by Chicago to make the postseason.

Anticipation is high for Wolford’s first NFL start, largely because of the unknown that comes with it. He’s never played a regular-season snap and the last time we saw him play a game was in the 2019 preseason.

Wolford’s skill set is certainly intriguing thanks to his quick release and mobility outside the pocket, which has Rams fans excited heading into Sunday’s game.

Rams vs. Cardinals: 4 key matchups to watch in Week 17

These four matchups will likely decide the outcome of Sunday’s Rams-Cardinals game.

The Rams will be short-handed against the Cardinals on Sunday as they look to secure a postseason berth with a win. They’ll be without a handful of key starters, opening the door for guys like John Wolford, Malcolm Brown and Van Jefferson to step up.

Los Angeles is understandably an underdog against Arizona, but the Rams still have plenty of talent to carry them to a win. Here are four of the biggest matchups to watch in this one, with these individual battles likely helping decide the outcome of the game.

No game in the NFC carries greater playoff implications this week than Rams-Cardinals as both teams fight to make the postseason. The Rams will be short-handed, missing Jared Goff, Cooper Kupp and Darrell Henderson, but they’re in good hands with Sean McVay at the front of the ship.

If the Rams win, they secure a playoff berth. But if they lose, they’ll need the Packers to beat the Bears on the road, too, in order to make it to the postseason. The Cardinals are also facing a win-and-in situation, but Arizona can’t make the playoffs if it loses to the Rams.

There will be plenty of eyes on this Week 17 matchup, with the game being broadcast to a large portion of the country. Check the map from 506 Sports below to find out if it’ll be on CBS in your area.

Kickoff from SoFi Stadium on Sunday will be at 4:25 p.m., the same time Bears-Packers will be on. That game will be carried by FOX and will also be shown in most of the country.

Be sure to keep an eye on both games as the Rams, Bears and Cardinals fight for the final two playoff spots in the NFC.

Two ways the Rams can replace Cooper Kupp on Sunday vs. Cardinals

The Rams won’t have Cooper Kupp on Sunday, but they have multiple ways to make up for his absence.

Cooper Kupp has been an impact player for the Rams since the first game he played in the NFL back in 2017. He’s as reliable as they come at wide receiver, catching seemingly everything thrown his way and proving to be a chain-mover on third down.

But in the biggest game of the season, the Rams will be without Kupp’s services after he reportedly tested positive for COVID-19. That’s a huge blow to the offense, especially with John Wolford making his first career start.

But fortunately, the Rams are deep at wide receiver and have the talent to at least somewhat fill the void left by No. 10 on offense. Here are two different ways they can do that, with both methods likely to be used throughout Sunday’s game against the Cardinals.

Rams now 3-point underdogs vs. Cardinals after opening as 1-point favorites

Injuries and Cooper Kupp’s COVID-19 test have caused the betting line to flip.

Just about everything that could’ve gone wrong has gone wrong for the Los Angeles Rams. Leading up to their final game of the season, a game they might have to win in order to make the playoffs depending on the Bears-Packers result, the Rams have lost three of their top offensive players to injuries and a positive COVID-19 test.

As a result, they’ll be without Jared Goff (thumb), Darrell Henderson (ankle), Cooper Kupp (COVID-19) and possibly Cam Akers (ankle) when they host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Because of these absences, the betting line for the season finale has completely flipped.

After opening as 1-point favorites over the Cardinals, the Rams are now 3-point underdogs at home, according to BetMGM. That’s a four-point swing in a matter of days, which is almost unheard of at sportsbooks.

The Over/Under has actually risen two points from 38.5 to 40.5, which could be the result of a large number of bets coming in on the Over. If a significant flow of bets also came in on the Cardinals +1, that could’ve helped shift the line, too, in an attempt to balance out the wagers.

Fortunately for the Rams, they aren’t necessarily eliminated from playoff contention if they lose on Sunday. If the Bears lose to Green Bay, the Rams will make the postseason, so L.A. has to hope Aaron Rodgers – the favorite to win NFL MVP – comes through on the road and knocks off Chicago.

The Packers are 5.5-point favorites over the Bears, so that’s a game many people expect Green Bay to win.

Rams vs. Cardinals: 8 stats and facts to know for Week 17 showdown

The Rams and Cardinals can each punch their ticket to the postseason with a win in Week 17.

It all comes down to Week 17 for the Rams and Cardinals with both teams’ playoff hopes hanging in the balance. The winner will head to the postseason, while the loser – unless the Bears also lose, which would send the Rams to the playoffs – will watch their season end on Sunday.

The Rams have had the Cardinals’ number since Sean McVay took over in 2017, and they remain the favorites in this matchup despite being decimated by injuries in the last couple of weeks.

Here are eight stats and facts to know as this pivotal Week 17 matchup approaches.

Kyler Murray says leg is fine, will definitely play vs. Rams on Sunday

The Cardinals quarterback left no doubt about whether he’ll be on the field for the season finale against the Rams.

While the Rams are losing players left and right, the Cardinals are gearing up to be at almost full strength for the season finale in L.A. Kyler Murray’s status was initially in doubt after coach Kliff Kingsbury said he has a leg injury that could limit his availability, the quarterback left no question as to who will be under center Sunday.

Murray said Wednesday that he will definitely play against the Rams in Week 17 and that his leg is fine. Murray exited Sunday’s game with a lower leg injury but details weren’t given on the severity of it.

Murray threw for 173 yards and three touchdowns in his first meeting with the Rams this season, a 38-28 loss by Arizona. He was completely contained on the ground, rushing for only 15 yards on five carries.

The Rams did an excellent job against the elusive quarterback, picking him off once and forcing two fumbles, one of which he lost. Los Angeles is just about fully healthy on defense, but the offense will be missing Jared Goff, Darrell Henderson, Cooper Kupp and possibly Cam Akers.

Short-handed Rams still open as 1-point favorites vs. Cardinals

The Rams are home favorites against the Cardinals in Week 17 despite being without Jared Goff and Darrell Henderson.

There’s a chance the Los Angeles Rams will be without their leading passer, rusher and receiver when they take on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 17. Yet, even with an injury-ravaged offense, the Rams are still favored in the season finale against their division rivals.

At BetMGM, the Rams have opened as 1-point favorites over Arizona in Week 17. The over/under of 38.5 points is the lowest of any game this week, which is the result of the injuries both teams are battling through; Kyler Murray’s status is uncertain due to a lower leg injury.

John Wolford will get the start for L.A. with Jared Goff out, making this his first regular-season action in the NFL. Darrell Henderson is out with a high ankle sprain, too, while Cam Akers is questionable with an ankle sprain of his own.

The cherry on top was Cooper Kupp landing on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, putting his status in question for the finale. If he didn’t test positive and was only deemed a close contact, he can be activated before Sunday’s game.

A lot hinges on this NFC West tilt. If the Rams win, they make the playoffs. If Arizona wins, it will get in as long as the Packers beat the Bears. If the Rams lose, they’ll need the Bears to also lose to Green Bay.

Jared Goff had surgery on thumb, will miss Week 17 vs. Cardinals

John Wolford will get the start in Jared Goff’s place this week.

Jared Goff showed remarkable toughness during Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, even if he wasn’t able to lead the Rams to victory. He dislocated his thumb and popped it back into place between plays, and it’s since been reported that Goff’s thumb is actually broken.

He finished the game without missing a snap, but he won’t be available for Week 17 against the Cardinals. Sean McVay shared an update on Monday, saying Goff underwent surgery on his thumb and will miss the season finale.

It’s a huge blow to the Rams’ playoff hopes, as this is the first time Goff will miss a game due to injury in his career. He’s played every offensive snap this season and is the only player to attempt a pass for the Rams.

John Wolford will take over as the starting quarterback against Arizona, his first NFL action. He’s never played a regular-season snap in the pros, but he’s performed well in limited preseason action and was a stud in the AAF. McVay did say that he’s hopeful Goff will be back for the postseason if the Rams are able to secure a spot in the playoffs,

McVay is confident Wolford will be prepared to start the season finale against the Cardinals. The Rams can clinch a playoff berth with a win over Arizona or a loss by the Bears to the Packers.
