USC Big Ten Tour: Hawkeyes Wire remembers Hall of Fame coach Ralph Miller

How great was Ralph Miller? He went 14-0 in the #B1G at Iowa in 1970. He made Oregon State a No. 1 seed in March Madness.

As the USC Big Ten Tour summer podcast series continues, our look at the University of Iowa moves to its basketball history. The most famous coach in Iowa men’s basketball history is Lute Olson, who then came to the Pac-10 to coach the Arizona Wildcats and won a national championship. Not to be forgotten, however, is Ralph Miller. He carved out an Iowa-to-the-West Coast path before Lute Olson did.

Miller coached Iowa from 1964 to 1970, then went to Corvallis to lead the Oregon State Beavers for two decades before retiring in 1989.

Ralph Miller was one amazing basketball coach.

He won two Big Ten titles in just six seasons at Iowa. He went 14-0 in the 1970 Big Ten season, guiding Iowa to the Sweet 16. He then went to Oregon State and patiently built that program. At one point, he went 49-5 in the Pac-10 over the course of three seasons, from 1980 through 1982. He won four Pac-10 titles at Oregon State. He made the Beavers a No. 1 seed in the 1981 NCAA Tournament and a No. 2 seed in 1982, guiding the program to the Elite Eight.

He led Wichita State to the Elite Eight in 1964, just before coming to Iowa. In 2019, he was one of 11 coaches to take three schools to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. That list has grown slightly since then, but Miller was on that list in 1982, when the size of the NCAA Tournament field was a lot smaller. Miller coached only five years in the era of the expanded (64-or-more-team) field for March Madness. Imagine what might have happened if his prime era was a decade later than it was.

Hawkeyes Wire editor Josh Helmer helps us remember Ralph Miller in our latest podcast episode on Iowa sports.
