Michael Chiesa discusses importance of Rafael dos Anjos matchup, doesn’t see it as a dangerous fight

Michael Chiesa explains why he doesn’t see Rafael dos Anjos as a dangerous fight ahead of UFC Raleigh.

[autotag]Michael Chiesa[/autotag] has a big task ahead of him.

“The Ultimate Fighter” 19 winner has been booked to fight former UFC lightweight champion and now top welterweight contender [autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] on Jan. 25 at UFC on ESPN+ 25 in Raleigh, N.C. The bout arguably is the biggest fight in Chiesa’s career.

“This is the best-case scenario I can possibly be in,” Chiesa told MMA Junkie. “I’m really excited for this matchup. I’ve been ahead of the eight ball in my training, so I’m excited to dive into training on Monday, get this camp going, and get ready for Raleigh.

“And it’s a loaded card – I feel like this is a fun card to be on, like you always want to be on a pay-per-view,  those cards get a lot of attention, but these ‘Fight Night’ cards that they try to stacked for obvious reasons, these are the cards I want to be a part of. I’m excited to get done with my fight, go to the back and watch (Cory) Sandhagen vs. Frankie Edgar. That’s a fight that’s going to be amazing. There are a lot of fun fights on the card. I’m excited to be a part of it.”

UFC on ESPN+ 25 hasn’t been finalized, but it’s looking to be one of the strongest “Fight Night” cards in recent memory. Headlined by Curtis Blaydes vs. Junior Dos Santos, the Raleigh event also includes Josh Emmett vs. Arnold Allen, Sara McMann vs. Lina Lansberg, and several other notable names.

Chiesa (16-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) has yet to get confirmation on the card placement of his bout, but said frankly he doesn’t care – he’s fighting dos Anjos (29-12 MMA, 18-10 UFC), at the end of the day.

“This is one of those things, like I beat ‘RDA,’ and there is no backwards steps from there, it’s a guy ranked higher and that’s it,” Chiesa said. “There are no backwards steps. Once you get in the rankings, you just have to keep stepping forward until you lose to the guy ahead of you, and then you can start considering guys below you. This is a great opportunity to make a big leap in my career, a big leap in my skills, so this is what it’s all about for me. I can’t emphasize it enough.

“I’m finally in this position that I wanted to be in for so long. I get to fight ‘RDA.’ He’s truly top five, so there are these big ramifications, and this is the situation I’ve always wanted to be in. This is what it’s all about, and it couldn’t have happened to me at a better time. (I’m) 31 years old, about to be 32 – I’m in my prime. Everything is clicking, my camp is good, my home life is good, my social life is great – everything is perfect right now, so there is no better time for a fight like this than right now.”

Brazil’s dos Anjos has been a tough test to pass for years. He’s been fighting at an elite level for a long time now, and more often than not, his opponents come up short.

Chiesa is aware of the dangers dos Anjos presents, but he doesn’t see it as his most dangerous fight.

“The most dangerous guy, yes, but not the most dangerous fight,” Chiesa explained. “A dangerous fight is like you lost your last two fights and now you’re fighting Carlos Condit. That, to me, is a dangerous fight because it’s like the do-or-die, the pressure, winning and keeping your job – or losing and maybe get cut. That’s a dangerous fight.

“Is this one of the most dangerous guys? Yes, 100 percent. But like I said, the pressure is off, and when it’s off, that’s when I fight my complete best. This is two wins in a row, fighting a top guy. Not a lot of people are probably counting on me to win. So, like, dude: Let’s just have fun, let’s train as hard as we possibly can, implement a game plan, go out there and fight this guy bell to bell. I believe I’m going to beat him.”

What could’ve been: 10 of the best booked UFC fights that never happened

Conor McGregor vs. Rafael dos Anjos, Nate Diaz vs. Dustin Poirer, Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson, and more make the list.

There have been numerous highly anticipated UFC matchups that have fallen through over the years because of unfortunate circumstances, and they easily could’ve produced fireworks.

From championship fights, to rivalries, to intriguing stylistic pairings, here are 10 of the best scheduled matchups that never ended up happening.

Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson

While it appears that another [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] vs. [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag] fight booking is imminent at the time of this writing, let’s just hope the fifth time is the charm.

These two were scheduled to fight on four other occasions, but a series of unfortunate circumstances and injuries has resulted in it never happening. The first booking was during The Ultimate Fighter Finale card on Dec. 11, 2015, when Nurmagomedov was forced out due to injury and replaced by Edson Barboza. Ferguson submitted Barboza in the second round via D’Arce choke, earning both “Performance” and “Fight of the Night” bonuses.

They were then scheduled to fight at UFC on FOX 19 on April 16, 2016, but this time it was Ferguson who pulled out. Ferguson was replaced by newcomer Darrell Horcher, whom Nurmagomedov battered before earning a second-round TKO win.

Then, an interim lightweight championship fight was scheduled to take place at UFC 209 on March 4, 2017, but the fight was canceled due to Nurmagomedov falling ill from a bad weight cut.

Finally, the two were set to meet a fourth time. At UFC 223 in April 2018, Nurmagomedov and then-interim champ Ferguson were going to fight for the undisputed lightweight title. But in a freak accident, Ferguson tripped over a wire and blew out his knee. Max Holloway stepped in briefly, but the New York State Athletic Commission deemed Holloway unfit to compete due to a severe weight cut. Al Iaquinta, who was scheduled to face Paul Felder on the same night, stepped in for the massive opportunity but was dominated by Nurmagomedov in a five-round battle.

Nurmagomedov finally realized his dream of becoming the UFC lightweight champ, and here’s hoping the fight with Ferguson will finally come to fruition in early 2020 as expected.

Rafael dos Anjos wants to welcome back Conor McGregor: ‘Give him a real contender’

Rafael dos Anjos wants to welcome Conor McGregor back to the UFC.

[autotag]Rafael dos Anjos[/autotag] never got his opportunity to fight [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag], but would love to welcome him back.

The two were scheduled to fight more than three years ago at UFC 196 for the lightweight title. But then-champ dos Anjos (29-12 MMA, 18-10 UFC) was forced to pull out just a couple of weeks before the fight due to a broken foot.

McGregor (21-4 MMA, 9-2 UFC), who was the featherweight champ at the time, was attempting to move up in weight to hold two titles simultaneously, but that was put on hold when dos Anjos suffered an injury. Nate Diaz stepped in and flipped the MMA world upside down by handing McGregor his first UFC loss.

But dos Anjos lost his title to Eddie Alvarez, and after McGregor handled his business with Diaz in a rematch, he met Alvarez for the 155-pound title and put on a masterclass to win a second UFC belt. So the fight between dos Anjos and McGregor never came to fruition, and dos Anjos thinks it’s time to make that fight happen.

He took to Instagram to call out McGregor, who hasn’t competed since his fourth-round submission loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 more than a year ago. McGregor is rumored to face Donald Cerrone on Jan. 18, but dos Anjos is asking the UFC to not give McGregor a “tune-up fight,” and instead give him a “real contender” like himself.

“Don’t give this guy a tune up fight, give him real contender at 170 , 165 or 155. I’m in all the way @danawhite @seanshelby”

Both dos Anjos and McGregor have competed at welterweight before. Dos Anjos recently moved up to the division, and McGregor fought Diaz twice at 170-pounds.

But dos Anjos seems happy to move back down to 155 to face McGregor since he thinks they have unfinished business.
