Colorado football state of the position: Wide Receiver

The Buffs’ offense will be relying on a few wide receivers to take the next step

Colorado has more of a history at the wide receiver position than one might notice given its history of running the football. The Buffs have consistently developed playmakers on the outside and have pushed that talent to the NFL. The 1990s saw eight different Buffs receivers drafted, including four first-round picks in a seven-year span.

Now in 2022, Colorado is looking for new faces to fill the void left by a few players departing via either graduation or the transfer portal.

Will a new Buff be able to join the ranks of the Michael Westbrooks, the Paul Richardsons and the Laviska Shenault Jrs. of the world?

How CU’s incoming transfer players performed last season

The Buffs didn’t get a whole lot of incoming players via the transfer portal, but they did get some good ones.

Unfortunately, the Colorado Buffaloes have been hit hard by the transfer portal as far as football goes. The list is just so long, but Mekhi Blackmon, Jarek Broussard, Brenden Rice and Christian Gonzalez are just a few who have entered.

Rice and Blackmon joined USC, Gonzalez joined Oregon and Karl Dorrell’s team has been gashed by the transfer portal.

However, they have received a few players via the transfer portal this offseason, including WR R.J. Sneed II from Baylor. It’s only January, too, so the Buffs could still tap further into the transfer portal market.

Let’s dive in and see how CU’s four current incoming transfers performed this past season.

Buffs land former Baylor wide receiver R.J. Sneed II from transfer portal

The Buffs landed a big name from the transfer portal in the form of Baylor wide receiver R.J. Sneed II

The last few weeks have felt like an endless stream of bad news for Colorado football fans, culminating with star running back Jarek Broussard’s announcement that he had decided to enter the transfer portal. Sunday wasn’t all bad news, however, as the Buffs received commitments from three-star offensive lineman Van Wells and in a big get for the Buffs, transfer wide receiver R.J. Sneed II from Baylor.

Sneed totaled 46 receptions for 573 yards last season and helped the No. 5 Bears to a 12-2 record, including a recent Sugar Bowl victory over Ole Miss. In 2020, he led the Bears with 497 receiving yards and three touchdowns. Sneed will now be using his final season of eligibility at Colorado in 2022.

A class of 2017 Baylor commit out of Cypress, Texas, Sneed was a three-star prospect and the No. 65 wide receiver in his class, according to 247Sports.

Sneed should bring both top-tier talent and veteran experience to a Buffs’ WR corps that recently lost some big pieces to the transfer portal in the form of Brenden Rice, La’Vontae Shenault and Keith Miller III.
