Great Britain observes moment of silence to honor Queen Elizabeth II before EuroBasket match

This was a powerful moment at Mediolanum Forum.

After more than seventy years on the throne, Queen Elizabeth II died in Scotland at the age of 96.

As the world mourned her death, many sporting events were postponed across the United Kingdom. The match in Milan between Great Britain and Italy at the EuroBasket tournament, however, was not postponed.

But before the game, both teams took the time to honor the late Queen Elizabeth II with an extended moment of silence.

It was a very powerful tribute at Mediolanum Forum before the two teams played each in the final game of the group phase before the knockout stage begins.

Manchester United and West Ham both honored Queen Elizabeth II before Thursday’s home matches

A moving scene in England.

Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II — Great Britain’s longest-reigning monarch — died peacefully in Scotland at the age of 96.

The news had the United Kingdom and much of the world mourning Elizabeth II’s passing, and we’re just now seeing how the sports landscape in England is reacting to her death.

In London, West Ham United was hosting Romanian side FCSB in a Europa Conference League match at the London Stadium within the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park complex. Before the match, West Ham held a minute of silence honoring Queen Elizabeth II. That organically turned into a crowd-led rendition of “God Save The Queen.”

This was the scene:

Manchester United also had a home Europa League match against La Liga’s Real Sociedad at Old Trafford. Both teams and the crowd participated in a minute of silence before the match.

The sponsor boards at Old Trafford were also kept black as an in-match tribute.

Play suspended through Friday at BMW PGA Championship after death of Queen Elizabeth II in Scotland

According to the tour, “play has been suspended until further notice.”

Some things are bigger than golf, especially across the pond.

The first round of the DP World Tour’s 2022 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in Surrey, England, was suspended on Thursday at 6:32 p.m. local time, just two minutes after the royal family announced that Queen Elizabeth II had died at 96 years old.

The tour announced that play will be suspended for the rest of Thursday and Friday, “out of respect for Her Majesty and the Royal Family.”

“We are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of Her Majesty today. Following her accession in 1952, Her late Majesty graciously accepted the Patronage of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews, as has been the custom of reigning Monarchs since HM King William IV in 1834,” Captain of The Royal and Ancient Golf Club Peter Forster said via a release. “Although not a golfer, Her late Majesty’s 70-year patronage of the Club was a great honour for its Members. We hold His Majesty The King and all The Royal Family in our thoughts at this time of mourning.”

A running list of postponed sporting events as England mourns Queen Elizabeth II

The United Kingdom will suspend some sports events and cancel others in the wake of Queen Elizabeth’s passing.

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in the United Kingdom’s history, passed away Thursday at age 96. After more than 70 years on the throne, she was an integral part of the nation’s history, even as her royal family’s political influence waned.

It’s an event for which the UK has braced, even if there was no way to predict exactly when it would take place. Now the country heads into a period of mourning as it readies Elizabeth’s son Charles, Prince of Wales, ascension to the throne. This will mean an in-state funeral not seen since Winston Churchill’s passing, a cessation of governmental proceedings and breathless media coverage across England, Scotland, Wale and Northern Ireland.

It also means sporting events across Great Britain will be suspended as a nation reacts. Here are the events that have been postponed thus far. This list will be updated as news trickles in.

Look back at the moment Queen Elizabeth II appeared at the Olympics with ‘James Bond’ in 2012

A look back at the wonderful Queen Elizabeth moment from the 2012 Olympics.

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday, at the age of 96.

It’s a sad day for her family and all of the United Kingdom, and condolences to everyone in mourning.

When looking back at her incredible life, we here at For The Win remembered one great sports-related moment: When she participated in the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony and “jumped” out of a helicopter with James Bond (Daniel Craig).

Then she walked out into the ceremony with Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, and got a royal greeting.

It was delightful all around, a surprising moment from her line — “Good evening, Mr. Bond” — to the faux parachuting:
