Levi Drake Rodriguez pick epitomizes value of the scouting process

In a post-draft press conference, Minnesota Vikings general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah praised the scouting process in their day three picks.

The 2024 NFL draft is in the books, and we’re going to spend a lot of time and energy talking about the players who were taken on the first day. And for good reason, the Minnesota Vikings got their quarterback of the future in J.J. McCarthy, and their success is going to hinge on his development.

But McCarthy is just the tip of the iceberg, and the real meat-and-potatoes of the draft process comes on day three. That’s where teams find those players who will fill out their roster, and they hope they find some diamonds in the rough. One such diamond could be the Vikings’ seventh-round pick, Levi Drake Rodriguez from Texas A&M-Commerce.

In speaking about the selection to the press, general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah stated that his selection is “Scouting in it’s purest form” and “one of his favorite things” likening the pick to a B-side of a single, like his favorite Queen song, “Bicycle Race”.

The Vikings lost a lot of defensive talent in the offseason, so Rodriguez will have an opportunity to make his mark on the team. As a seventh-round pick, he’ll have an uphill battle, but the scouting department believed in him for a reason. Now, it’s time for him to go out and show the rest of the staff what the scouts saw in him.

Panthers rookie Brady Christensen got booed off the stage for his ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ cover

We’ll give Christensen points for his ambition, at least.

All NFL rookies go through humiliating rituals, no matter how talented they are or when they were drafted. Talent shows at training camp are a part of that tradition and they make for some of the most entertaining moments of the summer – some of them get featured on HBO’s Hard Knocks series.

Panthers third-round pick Brady Christensen got the full treatment this week when he attempted to sing a cover of one of the greatest rock and roll songs of all time. According to Joe Person at the Athletic, veteran center Matt Paradis says Christensen tried to cover Queen’s megahit “Bohemian Rhapsody” and got booed off the stage.

“Paradis said offensive lineman Brady Christensen.. . made an interesting choice — Queen’s groundbreaking ‘Bohemian Rhapsody,’ the 1975 hit that has been described as a ballad, an opera, a rock tune and an a cappella all rolled into one, six-minute song. It didn’t go well. “We’re like, ‘You’re supposed to pick an easy song that everyone knows, not one of the greatest, hardest in the world. . . He got booed off the (stage). You can’t replicate that. There’s zero shot.”

We’ll give Christensen points for his ambition, at least.

As for his work on the field, we had been expecting Christensen to try his hand at left tackle since that’s the position he played in college. However, the coaches apparently see him as a right tackle.

When starter Taylor Moton has been getting reps at left tackle at training camp, the Panthers have been subbing in Christensen at right tackle.

If that arrangement works out, it might be the team’s best hope of filling their rather signigicant hole at left tackle. Otherwise, Cameron Erving might wind up protecting Sam Darnold’s blindside.

WATCH: Texans sing ‘We Are the Champions’ on the way to locker room after beating Bucs 23-20

The Houston Texans were singing Queen’s “We Are the Champions” on the way to the locker room after beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20.

The Houston Texans edged the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 23-20 Saturday afternoon at Raymond James Stadium to earn their fourth division title in five seasons.

In a video posted by the Houston Chronicle’s Aaron Wilson, the Texans were subdued coming to the locker room, but did manage to sing a few lines from Queen’s “We Are the Champions” to herald their sixth division title in franchise history.

The Texans face the Tennessee Titans in Week 17 on a Sunday afternoon at NRG Stadium. The game is subject to flexible scheduling, but probably will stay at its original 12:00 p.m. CT kickoff as there are no more divisional implications between the two teams.
