Although Greg Norman is absent, the shark is ever-present in QBE Shootout merchandise tent

When walking through the QBE Shootout merchandise tent, there’s a common theme — the shark.

When walking through the QBE Shootout merchandise tent, there’s a common theme — the shark.

Sure, the tournament is played at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, which Greg Norman constructed. It was formerly called the Shark Shootout, and Norman was a big reason why the tournament started and has been going strong for years. Also, Tiburón in Spanish means shark.

Although Norman isn’t at the QBE Shootout, the shark logo is ever-present, especially in the merchandise tent.

There is no shortage of hats, shirts and flags for fans to get their hands on.

Here’s a look at some of the best merchandise from the 2022 QBE Shootout.

Did Greg Norman recruit for LIV Golf as QBE Shootout host? 18 LIV players who are former ‘Shark Shootout’ participants suggests he may have

What if we told you that 18 LIV players who cashed in from the Saudi’s largesse had competed in the QBE Shootout?

There’s an old saying that once is an accident, twice is coincidence and three times is a pattern. What if I told you that 18 LIV Golf players who jumped from the PGA Tour this season for boatloads of Saudi cash had competed in the QBE Shootout, aka the Shark Shootout? That’s more than coincidence.

It appears that Norman, who hosted the unofficial Tour event since 1989, exploited his hosting duties to recruit players to LIV.

Developing a chummy relationship with Tour pros at the one event where the Shark regularly got to spend a week in the locker room and form relationships with them turned out to be rewarding. Of the 18 former Shootout competitors who joined LIV, 13 of them played in Naples, Florida, within the past two years when the upstart Saudi-backed golf league was taking flight.

A conspiracy theory, you say? Well, that could be but hopefully some of the discovery in the LIV-PGA Tour lawsuit will shed some light on Norman’s recruiting process.

Norman, the CEO and Commissioner of LIV, isn’t participating at the QBE, neither are the LIV players from a Silly Season event that Norman began with the best intentions: Norman, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Raymond Floyd teed it up at Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando in 1986 as a fundraiser for what is now the Arnold Palmer Medical Center in Orlando. It grew from there.

Let’s take a look at the 18 players who previously spent at least one fun-filled week at the Ritz-Carlton and played at Tiburon Golf Club but are banned from the unofficial team event after leaving for richer pastures with LIV Golf.

Lexi Thompson pumped to hit bombs at QBE Shootout with new partner Maverick McNealy

Ten of the 12 teams at Tiburon Golf Course this week will be together for the first time.

Lexi Thompson is back for a sixth time at the QBE Shootout while her partner, Maverick McNealy, is a rookie at the event. The former Stanford star got his first look at Tiburon Golf Course on Wednesday. Thompson, however, competed there just last month at the LPGA season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. She won the CME at Tiburon in 2018.

“I know he’s good,” said Thompson, when the pair of 27-year-olds were asked what they knew about each other. McNealy commented on their shared competitive drive.

“We’re not showing up here as an exhibition,” he said. “I want to give us as many good looks from the fairway as possible and just hit it right at the flag. Really excited.”

This year marks the first time that two women are in the field as World No. 2 Nelly Korda will partner with Denny McCarthy. The winning team earns $950,000.

Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that the QBE would become a mixed-team event between the PGA Tour and LPGA beginning in 2023. The two tours haven’t had a mixed-team event on the schedule for more than two decades.

“Golf being such an individual sport,” said Thompson, “we want more team events but definitely mixed women’s and men’s. I think it will be great for the game of golf. I think team events bring a lot bigger fan base. I think people absolutely love watching us play and fist pump and just be there for each other.”

Added McNealy: “I totally agree, I think any chance you can get the best golfers in the world period together and competing, that’s a great thing on both sides. I think it would be awesome.”

Ten of the 12 teams on hand this week will be together for the first time. The event, which is celebrating its 34th year, will feature a scramble format on Friday, modified alternate shot on Saturday and four-ball on Sunday.

Growing up with two older brothers, Thompson, an 11-time winner on the LPGA, relished the opportunity to play the back tees. It will feel like old times for her this week as the yardage at Tiburon is 7,382. The LPGA’s official yardage at CME was 6,556.

“I wanted to play from all the way back with the guys,” said Thompson. “I was like, ‘I don’t want to play forward, let’s just give myself a challenge’. I get to hit driver on every single hole, which I absolutely love. I don’t get that opportunity very much when I play, so I love bombing it off the tee and hitting mid- to longer irons.”

Tiburon Golf Club to host second of three professional golf events in four-month stretch with 2022 QBE Shootout

Tiburon Golf Club is in the midst of a busy four-month stretch.

Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, is in the midst of a busy four-month stretch.

The Greg Norman-designed course hosted the LPGA’s CME Group Tour Championship last month. This week, it hosts the QBE Shootout, an unofficial event on the PGA Tour schedule. The tournament features 12 teams of two golfers playing 54 holes in a scramble, modified alternate shot and four-ball format. The CME and the QBE are played on Tiburon’s Golf course.

Come February, Tiburon will host the PGA Tour Champions with the Chubb Classic, which will be on the Black course.

Tiburon is the only golf facility to host LPGA, PGA Tour Champions and PGA Tour-sanctioned tournaments.

[afflinkbutton text=”Book your trip to Tiburon today” link=”https://www.golfbreaks.com/en-us/vacations/naples/ritz-carlton-naples/black-course/?cid=999740052&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=golfweek&utm_campaign=pgat_tournament_courses_q3_22_gw”]

“Our team is honored to once again have the privilege to host these three professional events in such a short period of time,” Tiburon general manager Kevin DeDonato said in a release. “As our area recovers from the impact of Hurricane Ian, we are very proud to showcase the resiliency this market has in pressing forward.  Our entire team at Tiburon is grateful for the support we receive from all of our partners and we look forward for three successful events.”

Lydia Ko won the CME Group Tour Championship last month. She also locked up the Vare Trophy for lowest scoring average and Rolex Player of the Year.

The QBE Shootout begins Friday with the scramble portion. Saturday is alternate shot, and Sunday is four-ball. Two LPGA stars, Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson, are in the field, along with 22 men’s professionals.

The Chubb Classic’s 36th anniversary is in 2023, and it will be the third straight year the event is played at Tiburon. Bernhard Langer is expected to return to defend his 2022 title against many of the game’s biggest names, including Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Jerry Kelly and many others.

Report: QBE Shootout set to become mixed-team event for LPGA and PGA Tours in 2023

The last mixed-team event sponsored by the LPGA and PGA Tour was held in 1999.

At long last, a mixed-team event will return to the LPGA and PGA Tour schedules, with the QBE Shootout adopting the format beginning in 2023, the Associated Press has reported. The AP ‘s Doug Ferguson notes that players were informed of the change at a meeting last week in the Bahamas during the Hero World Challenge.

John Daly and Laura Davies won the final staging of the JCPenney Classic at Innisbrook in 1999, the most recent mixed-team event that was sponsored by the LPGA and PGA Tour. Brittany Lincicome remembers it well. She grew up not far from Palm Harbor, Florida, and worked as a standard-bearer at the event from ages 12 to 16.

This year, both Nelly Korda and Lexi Thompson are participating in the QBE at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida, site of the LPGA’s season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. The purse this week is $3.8 million, with each team splitting the $950,000 winner’s check. There are 24 players in the field.

This marks the first year two LPGA players are in the field. Korda will make her first appearance at the event and will be paired with Denny McCarthy. Thompson will team up with Maverick McNealy.

The history of the mixed-team event dates back to 1960 with the Haig & Haig Scotch Foursome. The great Mickey Wright won it with Dave Ragan in both ’61 and ’63. Notable winners of the JCPenney include Curtis Strange/Nancy Lopez (1980), Tom Kite/Beth Daniel (1981) and Fred Couples/Jan Stephenson (1983). Daniel also won it twice with Davis Love III (1990 and 1995).

Kelli Kuehne made a memorable pro debut at the 1996 version at Innisbrook’s Copperhead Course when she paired with Tiger Woods (in matching red and black Nike outfits).

A $425,000 winner’s check is strong money for the women’s game, with so many LPGA purses falling below $2 million. It will be interesting to see if more A-list PGA Tour players sign on to team up with the women at the unofficial event. As it currently stands, Max Homa, No. 16, is the highest-ranked player in the field this year.

Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson will be at 2022 QBE Shootout but Greg Norman won’t. Here’s the format, field, money, more

Here’s what you need to know about the QBE Shootout.

It’s December, which means it’s time for the QBE Shootout in Naples, Florida, at Tiburon Golf Club.

It’s a unique event on the PGA Tour schedule. Although there aren’t FedEx Cup points awarded, the field pits 24 golfers in pairs against each other playing over three rounds to determine a champion. It’s also exclusive because there are LPGA stars in the field.

The event has been played at Tiburon Golf Club since 2001, though it originally began in 1989 in California.

[afflinkbutton text=”Book your trip to Tiburon today” link=”https://www.golfbreaks.com/en-us/vacations/naples/ritz-carlton-naples/black-course/?cid=999740052&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=golfweek&utm_campaign=pgat_tournament_courses_q3_22_gw”]

But, how exactly does the QBE Shootout work? Here’s an explainer of everything you need to know before the 2022 version kicks off.

LPGA stars Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson headline next 2022 QBE Shootout in Florida, field and pairings set

It’s the first time there will be two LPGA players in the field.

The 2022 QBE Shootout has announced the 12 two-person teams that will compete at this year’s tournament, set for Dec. 9-11 at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida.

For the first time in the QBE’s 34-year history, two LPGA golfers will be competing: Nelly Korda, the world’s No. 1-ranked player will make her QBE debut, while No. 7-ranked Lexi Thompson will return for her seventh tournament.

Here’s a closer look at the 12 teams who will compete for the $3.8 million purse.

QBE Shootout field features 2 LPGA players, 10 of the world’s top 50, 11 newcomers and no Greg Norman

The 2022 field features two LPGA players for the first time. Lexi Thompson makes her sixth start, Nelly Korda debuts.

Steve Stricker, Lexi Thompson, and three-time champions Matt Kuchar and Harris English are among the fan favorites returning to Tiburon Golf Club for the 2022 QBE Shootout, Dec. 7-11.

One familiar face that won’t be in Naples, Florida this year is Greg Norman. In September, Norman announced he was asked not to attend the tournament he had hosted every year since its inception in 1989. The golf legend said it was because of his involvement with LIV Golf, the controversial alternative to the PGA Tour funded by Saudi Arabia that began its inaugural season this year.

QBE Shootout tournament director Rob Hartman said event organizers and Norman made a collective decision for Norman not to attend in order to keep the focus on the event’s charitable endeavors. This year that will include helping Southwest Florida in its recovery from Hurricane Ian. Hartman said all proceeds from ticket sales for the Shootout will be donated to local hurricane relief efforts.

The Shootout will feature 10 of the top-50 ranked players in the world including No. 16 Billy Horschel, No. 17 Cameron Young, No. 18 Max Homa, No. 27 Sepp Straka, No. 29 Kevin Kisner, No. 30 Corey Conners, No. 33 Tom Hoge, No. 35 K.H. Lee, No. 38 Brian Harman, and No. 50 Harris English.

For the first time in the QBE’s 34-year history, the tournament will feature two LPGA players. In addition to Thompson, who is making her sixth appearance, Nelly Korda will make her Shootout debut. Korda is currently No. 4 in the LPGA World Rankings, Thompson is No. 7.

Seven players competing for the Shootout’s $3.8 million purse combined for nine victories during the 2021-22 PGA Tour season and the recent start of the 2022-23 season. Homa won three times during that stretch, including successfully defending his Fortinet Championship title in September. Hoge, Horschel, Lee, Trey Mullinax, J.J. Spaun and Straka were also winners on Tour.

Collectively, the 24 players have accumulated 74 career PGA Tour  victories and 18 LPGA titles.

There are 11 players competing in the Shootout for the first time including Hoge, Korda, Denny McCarthy, Maverick McNealy, Keith Mitchell, Mullinax, Spaun, Scott Stallings, Straka, Sahith Theegala, and Young.

In addition to Kuchar and Harris, who teamed to win the QBE in 2020, as well as 2013, 2014, and 2016, the field includes three other former Shootout champions in Stricker (2009, 2017), Day (2014) and Harman (2018). Defending champions Jason Kokrak and Kevin Na, who won last year’s tournament by one stroke over Sam Burns and Horschel, are not competing this year.

Golf Channel will broadcast the first round live from 1-4 p.m. ET. Over the weekend, the final two rounds will feature live coverage on both Golf Channel and NBC. Second round coverage will be from 1:30-2:30 p.m. ET on Golf Channel, then will switch to NBC from 2:30-4:30 p.m. ET. The final round will air on Golf Channel from 1-2 p.m. ET and on NBC from 2-4 p.m. ET.

LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman asked ‘not to attend’ PGA Tour event he founded in Florida three decades ago

While the golf legend did not specify who requested he skip the event, he said it was because of his involvement with LIV Golf.

Greg Norman said Tuesday he will not attend this year’s QBE Shootout, the event he founded in Naples more than three decades ago.

In an Instagram post, Norman wrote he was asked not to attend the tournament he has hosted and played in every year since its inception in 1989. While the golf legend did not specify who requested he skip the event, he said it was because of his involvement with LIV Golf, the controversial alternative to the PGA Tour funded by Saudi Arabia which began its inaugural season this year.

“In some people’s mind(s) this is too disruptive and evolution is perceived as a bad thing,” Norman wrote.

QBE Shootout tournament director Rob Hartman said event organizers have been in discussions with Norman about his role as QBE host for months and all parties made a collective decision for Norman not to attend.

“As we got close, ultimately the decision was made that he was going to step back and really let the focus remain on our tremendous charitable partners,” Hartman said. “When he started this event 34 years ago, it was all about charity then and it’s all about charity now. Greg just made the decision that he didn’t want anything to distract from that.”

According to the Shootout’s website, the tournament has raised more than $15 million for charity, most notably for CureSearch for Children’s Cancer.

Norman said in his post he made the decision not to attend the QBE “so the focus can remain on the missions at hand.”

“To the Shootout charities, the City of Naples and to all of the incredible volunteers, corporate sponsors, fans and Shootout staff, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your continued good work and support,” Norman wrote. “I will miss seeing you all this year but I will certainly be there in spirit.”

A number of PGA golfers who have played in the QBE, including 2021 champions Jason Kokrak and Kevin Na, have joined the LIV Tour, which makes them ineligible to play in PGA Tour-affiliated events, including the QBE.

Hartman said the QBE’s 24-player field will be announced in mid-October. The QBE Shootout is scheduled to be played Dec. 7-11 at Tiburon Golf Club.

“I expect we’ll certainly have some new, fresh faces in Naples but a quality field, top to bottom once again,” Hartman said.

“Things are in a great place; we’re expecting to have a really great event. We’re all really looking forward to December and putting a big number on the board from a charitable perspective.”
