Saturday updates: Falcons sign Qadree Ollison, cut Wayne Gallman

The Falcons made multiple roster moves Saturday, activating Hayden Hurst from the injured reserve list, signing RB Qadree Ollison and more.

The Atlanta Falcons (5-7) are back on the road in Week 14 as they take on the Carolina Panthers (5-7) in what could be a pivotal game in the wide open NFC postseason race.

On Saturday, the team made some last minute changes to the roster, activating tight end Hayden Hurst from the injured reserve list and swapping out one running back for another.

Here are the top Falcons stories from Saturday.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

QB Justin Fields – Ribs
RB Michael Carter – Ankle
RB Jordan Howard – Knee
RB Jerick McKinnon – Hamstring
RB Najee Harris – Head
WR Jamal Agnew – Hip
WR Jarvis Landry – Knee
WR A.J. Brown – Chest
WR CeeDee Lamb – Head

Chasing Ambulances

QB Justin Fields (CHI) – Left the game with what was called a rib injury, but there is concern that Fields may have injured his spleen as well. Head coach Matt Nagy had no update  after the game. Initial tests did not reveal any broken ribs but he’ll undergo further tests on Monday. Should he miss any time, Andy Dalton will be the starter this week in Detroit for a very advantageous situation.

RB Michael Carter (NYJ) – Injured his ankle and did not return to the loss to the Dolphins. Carter’s a central figure in the offense and emerged as the primary rusher. He’ll undergo more tests on Monday, but if he misses time, the Jets will add La’Mical Perrine to the rotation of Ty Johnson and Tevin Coleman. None of those three backs will likely offer much fantasy value even if Carter misses this week in Houston.

RB Jordan Howard (PHI) – Suffered a knee injury that knocked him out of the win over the Saints. His status will be determined Monday, but Miles Sanders had a big performance in his first game back, and the Eagles already add in  Boston Scott as well.  Howard was already due to a decrease in workload anyway.

RB Najee Harris (PIT) – A hard hit to his helmet rocked the rookie head back and he left the game with a suspected concussion. He returned later after being cleared by doctors.

WR Jamal Agnew (JAC) – The Jaguars’ wideout had his leg trapped awkwardly beneath him and suffered a gruesome-looking twisting of his leg that is described as a hip injury. Head coach Urban Meyer described the injury as “devastating,” and there is speculation that he’s lost for the season. He’ll be tested further on Monday but good results are not expected.  Tavon Austin is his backup, but Agnew was the rising star of the receivers. His slot role could be cobbled together from several other receivers.

WR Jarvis Landry (CLE) – Left the win over the Lions with a knee injury  but re-entered the game with minimal impact. He was held to only four catches for 26 yards and the Browns were already without Donovan Peoples-Jones. Barring surprising news, Landry appears to have missed any serious injury.

WR CeeDee Lamb (DAL) – Suffered a concussion in the loss to the Chiefs and did not return. This injury could be a problem since the Cowboys play again in four days on Thanksgiving. Cedrick Wilson would likely see an increase but Amari Cooper was also out and Dalton Schultz and Michael Gallup were the  leading receivers.

WR A.J. Brown (TEN) – He left the game with a hand injury and was listed as questionable to return. But he did return and then left for a second time with a chest injury. He ended with just one catch, and for the second non-Henry game, he was a nonfactor when he played. Julio Jones was out as well, and Brown gets intense coverage. His status will be clear later in the week, but the Titans play at the Patriots this week and Brown already has a tough matchup even if he is healthy.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

Patriots Backfield – While it seems to be constant change, the Week 11 rotation in the win over the Falcons is probably what most weeks will see. Damien Harris was the primary rusher and ended with ten carries for 56 yards, while Rhamondre Stevenson gained 69 yards on 12 carries and had a larger role in the second half of the already decided game.  Stevenson also had a 36-yard run called back on a penalty. Brandon Bolden is the odd man out, with only one carry for one yard and two receptions for 15 yards. Both Harris and Stevenson also had a catch.

RB Qadree Ollison (ATL) –  The Falcons depth player was a surprise lead back in the loss to the Patriots and it probably means little. Cordarrelle Patterson missed the game, and  Wayne Gallman ran for 55 yards on 15 carries in Week 10 but was only allowed one rush last Thursday night.  Ollison ran a team-high nine times for 34 yards, and Keith Smith was given a season-high three carries. The takeaway is that Mike Davis is done, there’s no rhyme or reason for the rotation outside of Patterson who carries the only fantasy value in the backfield.

QB Cam Newton (CAR) – His re-debut as a Panther didn’t get the win, but he already looked like an upgrade to Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker.  Christian McCaffrey may lose rushing scores to him, but still totaled 119 yards and a score in his first game with Newton.  He passed for 189 yards and two scores that included one to DJ Moore (5-50, TD) and he even connected with Robby Anderson (5-30) for a season-high five receptions.  Newton ran for 46 yards with a 24-yard touchdown as a rusher.

RB Latavius Murray (BAL) – Saw his first action since Week 6 and only gained 32 yards on ten carries while Devonta Freeman (16-49, TD) remained the primary back and even added six catches for 31 yards.  Murray had been the No. 1 rusher before injury, but the Ravens appear comfortable with Freeman as the main guy.

QB Andy Dalton (CHI) – Sure, they lost and HC Matt Nagy’s hot seat just was turned up to 11. But Dalton came into the loss to the Ravens midway in the third quarter and nearly pulled off a comeback when he threw for 201 yards and two scores.  Darnell Mooney (5-121, TD) and Marquise Goodwin (4-104, TD) both turned in their best production of the year. In just one and a half quarters with Dalton. If Justin Fields remains out, the Bears play in Detroit on Thanksgiving.

QB Tim Boyle (DET) – Replaced Jared Goff in the loss to the Browns and threw for a whopping 77 yards and two interceptions. So, maybe Jared Goff will be back.

49ers backfield – With Elijah Mitchell out, the 49ers went with Jeff Wilson (19-50) and Trey Sermon (10-32) in the blowout win over the Jaguars. Of course, Deebo Samuel (8-79, TD) was the most productive rusher even if he only caught one pass.

WR Elijah Moore (NYJ) – The rookie never caught a touchdown from Zach Wilson, but he’s scored four times in the four games since he left. After spinning through Josh Johnson and Mike White as starting quarterbacks, the first game with Joe Flacco produced a season-best eight catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. The seventh wideout drafted this year, Moore looks like a star just waiting for a good quarterback that can last more than one week.

RB Mark Ingram (NO) – The Saints fell to the Eagles, but Ingram looked sharp when he replaced Alvin Kamara and ran for 88 yards on 16 rushes, and added six catches for 25 yards.

RB Miles Sanders (PHI) – His first game back since leaving in Week 7, and Sanders ran for 94 yards on 16 carries. Jordan Howard (10-63) was also involved but left injured, and Boston Scott (6-16) also pitched in. The committee is not only still alive, but Jalen Hurts ran in all three offensive touchdowns.

RB Dontrell Hilliard (TEN)  –  The team that once had the biggest workhorse in the NFL now uses three different running backs and  changes their rotation each week. Adrian Peterson (9-40) took the top spot, and D’Onta Foreman (7-25) flopped just when you thought you scraped a starting running back from the waiver wire. And now Dontrell Hilliard (7-35) had his first action with the Titans after three very quiet seasons between the Browns and Texans. He added a team-high eight catches for 47 yards. He was a practice-squad call-up that replaced Jeremy McNichols who had a concussion.  Hilliard should see another chance to play based on his success, but this is a committee that may not be afforded a lot of touches in future games.

RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire (KC) – He landed on injured reserve with a nasty knee injury in Week 5. Edwards-Helaire came back for the win over the Cowboys and looked none the worse. He ran for 63 yards on 12 carries with one touchdown and caught two short passes. Damien Williams was ineffective on his five rushes for 15 yards.

Huddle player of the week

RB Jonathan Taylor (IND)  –   Set a franchise record with five touchdowns against the No. 1 defense in points allowed and the No. 1 defense against fantasy running backs (that rank will drop).  He was even on the road. Taylor took over the game with 32 carries for 185 yards and four touchdowns, plus caught three passes for 19 yards and the fifth score. He scored 53.4 fantasy points. In the Huddle Expert League with 12 teams, I just lost with the second highest score, 169.10 – 156.86 thanks to playing against him. Plenty of  leagues probably had a guy like me. Ouch.

Salute!

Falcons sign RB Wayne Gallman, release Qadree Ollison

On Thursday, the Falcons signed running back Wayne Gallman and released Qadree Ollison.

The Atlanta Falcons are changing things up at the running back position just two days after releasing their first 53-man roster. On Thursday, the team signed former New York Giants running back Wayne Gallman and released Qadree Ollison.

Gallman is the more accomplished back of the two, playing with the New York Giants for the past four seasons and rushing for 1,444 yards and nine touchdowns, while adding 80 catches, 498 receiving yards and two additional scores.

Last year, Gallman rushed for a career-best 682 yards and six touchdowns on 4.6 yards per carry. He got extended time once Saquon Barkley went down with a season-ending injury.

Ollison, a fifth-round pick out of Pittsburgh back in 2019, was entering his third season and finally appeared to be in line for meaningful reps. In 11 career games with the Falcons, Ollison rushed 23 times for 53 yards and four touchdowns.

Watch: ESPN’s fantasy experts discuss Falcons RB Mike Davis

While filling in for an injured Christian McCaffrey last year in Carolina, Davis racked up over 1,000 all-purpose yards.

The start of the 2021 NFL regular season is still a few weeks away, but fantasy football players across the country are in the final hours of draft preparation. For fans of the Atlanta Falcons, there’s no shortage of fantasy options, including wide receiver Calvin Ridley, quarterback Matt Ryan and kicker Younghoe Koo. However, very few know what to make of the Falcons’ running game.

In 2020, Todd Gurley rushed for an underwhelming 678 yards on 195 attempts (3.5 yards per carry) but did have nine touchdowns. Atlanta chose not to bring Gurley back, instead signing free agent Mike Davis to be the team’s starter in 2021.

While filling in for injured Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey last year in Carolina, Davis racked up over 1,000 all-purpose yards. The 28-year-old could potentially top those numbers playing in Arthur Smith’s system this season. Plus, Davis’ lack of a true backup makes his situation even more intriguing in the minds of fantasy experts.

“Who is the backup running back in Atlanta?” ESPN’s Field Yates rhetorically asked his co-host, Matthew Berry, on the set of Fantasy Focus Football. “Not too many people would know the answer to that because they are very, very thin behind Mike Davis.”

One thing ESPN may be overlooking is the presence of Cordarrelle Patterson. Atlanta signed the All-Pro return man during the offseason, but the team is listing him as the No. 2 running back on the depth chart.

Dan Quinn says No. 2 RB spot to be shared by Ito Smith, Brian Hill

Both backups Ito Smith and Brian Hill have shown flashes of potential over their short careers. According to head coach Dan Quinn, though, the two backs will share the No. 2 role

The Falcons swapped out starting running back Devonta Freeman for former Georgia star Todd Gurley during the offseason. Assuming he stays healthy, Gurley will be the lead back in 2020, but who will be the team’s No. 2 RB?

Both backups Ito Smith and Brian Hill have shown flashes of potential over their short careers. According to head coach Dan Quinn, though, the two backs will share the No. 2 role this season, as reported by Kelsey Conway.

Smith, 24, was a fourth-round pick by Atlanta in 2018. He’s played in just 21 games over two seasons, rushing for 421 yards (3.8 yards per carry) and five touchdowns, with 38 catches for 239 receiving yards.

Hill, also 24, has rushed for 517 yards on 4.7 yards per attempt over his three-year NFL career. He’s less of a receiving threat — 13 catches for 114 career receiving yards — but does bring some special teams versatility as a return man.

Don’t forget about 2019 fifth-round pick Qadree Ollison, either. The rookie finished with four rushing touchdowns last season.

Atlanta also announced on Friday that the team had released RB Craig Reynolds.

Bumps, Bruises and Bowouts

WR Julio Jones – Shoulder
WR Hunter Renfrow – Ribs
QB Mason Rudolph – Splinters
QB Dwayne Haskins – Wrist
WR Paul Richardson – Hamstring

Chasing Ambulances

Week 12 was the most injury-free slate of games that I can remember. Julio Jones hurt his shoulder but went back into the game. Dwayne Haskin’s wrist may be an issue, but he’s already a terrible fantasy play anyway and the Skins would likely benefit reverting to Case Keenum.

Mason Rudolph was benched and Devlin Hodges played better, but the Steelers already struggle when they pass and Hodges is no late-season savior.

There wasn’t an injury that would spawn any meaningful depth chart changes. And that’s likely to repeat until the end of the season because those who were going to get injured, already have. And everyone else is already banged up by now anyway.

Free Agents, Flops and Other Notables

RB Jonathan Williams – The Colts will still miss Marlon Mack for a few more weeks and Williams followed up his surprise 147-yard Week 11 performance with 121 yards and a touchdown last Thursday in Houston. This week at home against the Titans holds a lot of promise.

WR Will Fuller – Missed five games but his first Sunday back and he posted seven catches for 140 yards against the Colts. The next two games go against the Patriots and Titans, so he’s likely to crawl back under the rock.

WR Russell Gage – Hasn’t scored this year but turned in a season-best eight catches for 76 yards in the loss to the Falcons. Notable is that while his two previous games were mediocre and on the road, his only previous homestand since  Muhammad Sanu left was when he caught seven passes for 58 yards. The Falcons play at home versus the Saints and Panthers for the next two weeks.

RB Qadree Ollison – The Falcons rookie power back totaled only 13 touches over the last two games but they were the first with him playing and he scored a touchdown in each.

QB Brian Allen – The Broncos quarterback was held to only 10-of-25 completions for 82 yards and one interception in the loss to the Bills. The Broncos 2.10 draft pick of Drew Lock is practicing again after spending the season on injured reserve because of a wrist injury. He’ll be starting sooner than later and the next three opponents are LAC, @HOU, and @KC. The Broncos will lose, but it could be a good experience for Lock who is bound to throw for more than 82 yards.

WR Sterling Shepard – Returned from his serious concussion and ended with five receptions for 15 yards in the loss to the Bears. This week hosting the Packers isn’t a great matchup, but the Giants will face the Eagles, Dolphins, and Redskins after that.

WR Allen Robinson – Just posted six catches for 131 yards and a score against the Giants. He’s done well only when facing weaker defenses and usually at home. With an ending schedule of @DET, DAL, @GB, KAN, and @MIN he’s going to be very hard to rely on again.

RB Benny Snell – With James Conner sidelined, Snell was given another start and he ran for 98 yards on 21 carries at the Bengals. His only other start was Week 6 when he posted 89 total yards at the Chargers. Keep an eye on the Conner situation because the Steelers face the Browns and Cardinals next. Jaylen Samuels wasn’t a factor and he comes into play only as a receiver when the Steelers are facing a tough defense and need to dump the pass off to a running back. Conner (shoulder) never practiced last week so he may miss a second game.

QB Baker Mayfield – Comes off a season-high 327 yards and three touchdowns in the win over the Dolphins. Mayfield has been a major disappointment to many, but the Browns slogged through a murderous schedule. Mayfield threw for two or more scores in the last three weeks (all at home).  He plays at the Steelers this week but then faces the Bengals and Cardinals.

WR D.J. Moore – The Saints were without CB Marson Lattimore in Week 11 but still held Mike Evans to only 69 yards on four catches and that was in Tampa Bay. But this week in New Orleans, Moore turned in six receptions for 126 yards and two scores for a career-best performance. Moore’s first score was on a 51-yard catch and run.

RB Josh Jacobs – was held to only 34 yards on ten carries and only caught one pass for two yards. The rookie merely went through his first NFL trash game and Derek Carr only threw for 127 yards and no scores. They were also likely thinking ahead to this week in Kansas City.

QB Sam Darnold – He passed for 315 yards and two scores and even ran in a touchdown. That came on the heels of 293 yards and four touchdowns last week at the Redskins. Granted, the Skins and Raiders didn’t feature top secondaries, but neither will the  Bengals and Dolphins the next two weeks. Even Robby Anderson (4-86, TD) came to life.

RB Rashaad Penny – Chris Carson is the starter, but he only gained 26 yards on eight runs while Penny became the “hot hand” at the Eagles and ran for 129 yards on 14 carries. Penny never had a catch while Carson ended with four receptions for 31 yards. There’s no changing of the depth chart and this is the same back that only gained two yards last week while Carson turned in 101 yards and a score at the 49ers.

RB Bo Scarbrough – The Week 11 surprise took his second start and ran for 98 yards on 18 carries. He still has not caught a pass and realize that he’ll be facing the Bears, Vikings, and Buccaneers next. That won’t be nearly so accommodating.

RB Derrius Guice – The Skins 2018 draft pick only managed ten runs for 32 yards at home versus the Lions who brought the No. 32 defense against running backs. With Dwayne Haskins as the starter, this offense has lost all punch. The out schedule is worse but there is a chance that Haskin’s wrist is bad enough to bring back Case Keenum.

RB Leonard Fournette – He ran for 97 yards and two scores plus caught nine passes for 62 yards in the loss in Tennessee. It was his only score since Week 5 and these last two weeks with Nick Foles as the starting quarterback resulted in season-high seven and nine catches, respectively.

Huddle player of the week

Chris Godwin  –  The only safe fantasy play is to start both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin if you could somehow draft both because you’re probably going to receive a monster game from one of them every week. Never both. And a tough call as to which one will go off. But this week, Godwin led all fantasy scorers with seven receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He was already one of the best sleeper types and now helped win many fantasy games this week.
